LEAGUE CHAMPS!

Lincoln High boys soccer secures victory over Lakeside

Queen Anne &Magnol ne

e Lincoln High School varsity boys soccer team won the Metro League Championship, 3-1, over their rival Lakeside last week. e last regular game of the season served as a sort of wake-up call when they tied with Lakeside. In a Friday night game at Interbay, an estimated 1,000 Lincoln students and fans packed the stadium. Nolan Todd, a junior from Queen Anne, said that it felt amazing to see so many faces from the community.

‘It lls us with a huge sense of joy and appreciation for everyone who comes out to support,” he said. e game went scoreless through two overtime periods and came down to penalty kicks.

‘It was an extremely close game that ended up going to penalties,’ senior Isaac Esquinasi said.

‘Every single moment was absolutely loaded with pressure, tension, emotion and signi cance,” said goalkeeper coach Greg Daly said. ‘It was positively the largest collective explosion of joy I’ve felt since the rst Seahawks NFC Championship, and it’s why people should care about sports in their community and get involved.’

Nick Winemiller, a senior and co-captain, said he was extremely proud of the team and looking forward to playing in the state championship next weekend.

‘It’s always been a positive vibe throughout the team, which makes the program team so unique.’

LIHI hosting meeting about hybrid RV/tiny house village in Interbay

Low Income Housing Institute is hosting a meeting to educate people about Salmon Bay Village, a new hybrid-housing project planned for the Interbay neighborhood.

Residents are invited to attend the meeting from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Thursday at Magnolia United Church of Christ, 3555 W. McGraw St.

Josh Castle, community engagement director with the Low Income Housing Institute, spoke to the Magnolia Community Council about LiHi’s newest project in Seattle at the May 16 meeting.

The Salmon Bay Village, 3435 15th Ave. West, will be just south of the

Ballard Bridge near the site of the old car wash. Unlike other LIHI developments, this will not solely feature tiny houses. Instead, Castle said this will provide spaces for about 30 RVs and 10 tiny houses and accommodate approximately 40 people.

“It’s going to serve a lot of people living in their RVs living right there in Interbay,” he said. “So, we want to

make a visible impact right there in the neighborhood.”

The residents who will park their RVs there, however, will have to commit to transferring from living in an RV to permanent housing or a transitional tiny house within a certain time frame — 90 days — Castle said, but

Bayview May 31 Health Fair: Recommitting to health and well-being

On May 31, National Senior Health and Fitness Day will celebrate its 30th annual event, a day dedicated to not only promoting the importance of regular exercise but to supporting and encouraging it. We have learned a great deal about the value of physical activity and healthy aging since the rst National Senior Health & Fitness Day 30 years ago. I recall a time about ve years before this event was created when I participated in a health fair for a senior center in Norristown, Pa. I was a edgling Meals on Wheels coordinator, and I was quite proud of myself for having just joined a gym. When I shared that with a health insurance vendor at the health fair, he scowled at me and said that all I’m doing is increasing my risk of injury. Well, times have certainly changed.

At the risk of stating the obvious, we now know we lose

what we don’t use. Less physical activity begets less physical activity. Less mental activity begets the same. And readers of this column know that our minds impact how our bodies age and vice versa. erefore, my hope is that you view this day as a recommitment to your health and well-being by incorporating just a little bit more physical

activity into your day. Every day. It’s the little steps that lead to new habits that become bigger steps. And bigger improvements.

An option: Consider visiting Bayview on May 31 as we join in the celebration with the return of our annual health fair. is public event kicks o at 1 p.m. and will include vendors and 20-minute sample classes led by our esteemed and multi-talented Fitness Director Charlene Watson, which may include resident favorites like tai chi, seated yoga, line dancing, Zumba gold and yoga ow. If anyone can inspire a little more movement in our day, it’s Charlene. Just ask any Bayview resident. And accept our wishes for a most active and happy National Senior Health and Fitness Day. Registration is required at www.bayviewseattle.org/events.

e build out of electric vehicle charging stations is part of an $8.1 million grant from the Washington State Department of Transportation to bolster the number of charging stations across the Evergreen State.

Legislature during last year’s session.

In 2020, Washington lawmakers passed and Inslee signed it into law Senate Bill 5811 directing the state Department of Ecology to adopt California’s emissions standards as they’re rolled out.

Baruch Feigenbaum, senior managing director of transportation policy at the free market Reason Foundation, thinks the state is pushing electric vehicles too hard.

“We’re honored to partner with the Washington State Department of Transportation to increase consumer access to public fast charging and accelerate the transition to zero-emission transportation,” Gustavo Occhiuzzo, CEO and co-founder of EVCS, said in a news release. “Our goal is to democratize the EV charging experience by tackling some of the largest hurdles EV drivers face today. is includes access to reliable and fast public EV charging across all applications, simpli ed pricing, and location convenience. With help from the ZEVIP grant, we’re able to address these issues for Washington EV drivers, making EV adoption more seamless.”

Per the news release, EVCS plans to build charging stations in Port Townsend, Poulsbo, Bainbridge Island, Gig Harbor, Kingston and Port Orchard. e company is also adding charging stations in Twisp, Pateros and Newhalem, locations along the Cascade Loop National Scenic Byway.

Last year, Gov. Jay Inslee said Washington will follow California’s lead and ban the sale of new gas-powered motor vehicles in the state by 2035. Standards adopted by the Department of Ecology require automobile manufacturers to sell an increasing percentage of electric and other zero-emissions vehicles based on overall sales until reaching 100% by 2035.

Lawmakers set a goal of phasing out sales of new internal combustion-powered vehicles by 2030 as part of the 16-year, nearly $17 billion “Move Ahead Washington” transportation package that passed the

“First, 52 chargers is okay, but Washington is a large state,” he said in an email to e Center Square. “At a minimum chargers will be needed along the entire I-5 corridor from Portland, OR to Vancouver, BC and that is going to require a lot more than 52 chargers per year. How many gasoline and diesel pumps are in this corridor? I guarantee that it is many multiples of 52. Many intersections (with multiple fuel stations) have 52 pumps by themselves. So this scaling won’t work.”

People like their gas-powered automobiles, he pointed out, because electric vehicles are currently a lateral technology at best.

“We’re also seeing that folks are holding onto their cars longer,” Feigenbaum said. “ e average age of an automobile on the road hit a new high, at more than 12 years. is is because automobiles are better made and also more costly. Clearly many people that are buying new ICE  [internal combustion engine] vehicles today are not going to be purchasing another new vehicle in the near future.”

As far as practicality and cost go, electric vehicles are a regression, he noted.

“And more folks are buying used automobiles because they cannot a ord the costs of new vehicles,” Feigenbaum said. “ ose vehicles are almost certainly not going to be electric vehicles. Even today, many electric vehicles have range problems and the ones that don’t are very expensive. Ten years is a pipe dream and I think 20 will be a challenge as well.”

Seattle on receiving end of White House’s latest homelessness initiative

The White House is partnering with the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness to launch a new initiative that plans to help Seattle and five other areas in the U.S. with homelessness.

All In: The Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness, will set the goal of reducing homelessness in the country by 25% by 2025.

The U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, with its 19 federal member agencies, will partner with state and local governments to address homelessness in Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix and the entire State of California.

According to the 2022 Point-in-Time Count, the Seattle and King County area have 13,348 homeless people. That is the third largest homeless population behind New York City and Los Angeles, which are over 60,000.

The White House will embed a federal official in each community to accelerate locally-driven strategies to reduce homelessness, as well all deploy federal teams to identify opportunities for regulatory relief and navigate federal funding streams in support of actions to reduce homelessness.

“This is an opportunity to leverage the expertise of our federal partners and opportunities for federal funding,” Interim

CEO of the King County Regional Homelessness Authority Helen Howell said to The Center Square in an email. “We appreciate the support of the White House and [U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness] in championing a placebased, person-centered, and housing first approach to bringing more people inside.”

The White House stated in a press release that the All In: The Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness Initiative builds off of President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act. For instance, the Treasury Department’s State and Local Recovery Fund dedicated more than $2.5 billion for homelessness projects  in the six All Inside sites.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development also released a package of grants earlier this year that totaled $486 million to help 62 communities address homelessness. Washington state received $8.4 million from the package.

“With our partners at King County and the [King County Regional Homelessness Authority], we have a new opportunity to leverage support from the federal government and make a difference reducing homelessness and bringing people inside,” Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell said in a statement.

Google to pay $40M to Washington state after lawsuit over location tracking

The Washington State Attorney General’s Office announced Thursday that it had reached a settlement with Google requiring the company to pay $39.9 million to the state stemming from deceptive practices related to the tech giant’s location tracking operations.

In January 2022, Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a lawsuit against the Mountain View, California-based company, contending users were not able to effectively prevent Google from collecting, storing and profiting from their data, even though Google led users to believe otherwise.

“Google denied Washington consumers the ability to choose whether the company could track their sensitive location data, deceived them about their privacy options and profited from that conduct,” Ferguson said in a news release. “Today’s resolution holds one of the most powerful corporations accountable for its unethical and

unlawful tactics.”

The initial lawsuit was expected to be a multistate lawsuit, but Ferguson said he declined and chose to file independently, believing Washington received more than double the amount it would have received if it was part of a lawsuit involving multiple states.

In addition to the almost $40 million financial penalty, as part of a legally-binding consent decree filed in King County Superior Court, Google is required to institute a slate of reforms in order to be more transparent with its users on how it tracks and uses consumer data.

When asked to comment on the settlement of Ferguson’s lawsuit over location tracking, Google referred to a statement put out by the company in November after it agreed to a $391.5 million settlement with 40 states over location tracking, insisting it had addressed a number of concerns raised by regulators about “outdated product policies that we changed years ago.”

Report: Washington state has 6th worse unemployment rate change in the nation

A Friday report from WalletHub ranked Washington state No. 46 – sixth worse in the nation – in terms of unemployment rate changes.

To determine rankings in its “Changes in Unemployment Rate by State,” the personal finance website compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia by comparing the changes in unemployment from April to March, April 2022, April 2020, and April 2019, as well as looking at each state’s overall unemployment rate.

“April’s jobs report showed an uptick in growth. The economy gained 253,000 nonfarm payroll jobs, up from 165,000 the previous month. In April, there were notable gains in sectors including professional and business services, health care, leisure and hospitality, and social assistance,” the WalletHub report noted.

“Now, the U.S. unemployment rate sits at 3.4%. We have come a long way from the nearly historic high of 14.7% in April 2020, due to a combination of vaccina-

tions and the country fully reopening,” the report added. “However, inflation and the potential of a recession threaten to push the unemployment rate higher again if Federal Reserve rate increases are not able to stave them off.”

WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez spoke to Washington’s low ranking on its list.

“It had 13% more unemployed people in April compared to the same time last year,” she explained in an email to The Center Square. “Washington’s unemployment rate is 4.3%, the fifth highest in the country, and significantly higher than the 3.4% national average.”

It wasn’t all bad news, however.

“Despite these figures, the number of unemployed people dropped by over 3% in April compared to March, which is a sign of improvement,” Gonzalez noted.

“That being said, a rise in unemployment would help curb inflation, so for those who want to make a change in their professional lives, now would be a great time.”

Washington state fared only slightly better than its neighbor to the south, Or-

egon, which was ranked at No. 44 by WalletHub. at’s in contrast to its eastern neighbor, Idaho, which came in at No. 15. States with the best change in unemployment:

3. South Dakota

4. Wisconsin

Issue of Fort Lawton land at Discovery Park not simple

How I wish this were still not an issue. However, in reply to Ms. Santucci’s letter published in the May 17 issue of the newspaper, I want to correct her statement saying the city has owned the Fort Lawton property at Discovery Park since 2012. This is incorrect. The U.S. Army still owns this land, even though it has been designated for disposal since 2005 as a part of the Base Realignment and Closure plan.

As part of this process, for any BRAC property disposition, HUD is the designated federal agency for review of applications for surplus property, which must consist of both a redevelopment plan and a homeless assistance submission.

The city’s redevelopment plan is now at HUD. Since the plan has been there for some time, today I wrote to Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal in hopes that her office can find out the status at HUD and perhaps assist in the plan’s approval.

I know some say that this location is not convenient for people.

Perhaps those people are not aware that Metro Route 33 is a current transportation source for this location, one which Metro could enhance as needed.

Finally, while, in law, Congress has decided that the priority use for disposed land supports low income housing, that does not mean that the U.S. Army can just throw up its hands given the many delays and just sell this 34 acres to the highest bidder.

Seattle Public Library conducting library app survey

The Seattle Public Library wants to know what residents wish to see in a library app. The Seattle Public Library is researching the development of a mobile app to improve access to the library system, enhance the online patron experience and attract new audiences.

To guide the library in this project, patrons and community members are invited to share their opinions on what a new Library app should offer. Visit spl.org/App to take the approximately 5-minute survey, which is available in multiple languages. Printed surveys are also available at all Library locations.

Early feedback from public focus groups indicates that people who are likely to use a library app want it to function as a digital library card, support multiple languages and include accessibility features like scalable, high-contrast text and voice navigation.

Responses are completely anonymous. No personally identifiable information is being requested or collected via this survey. Refer to the library’s Confidentiality of Patron Information policy for more information.

they won’t be kicked out if they fail to do so.

“We don’t ever want to send anyone ever back into homelessness,” Castle said, adding if residents still haven’t found alternative housing in that time frame, case workers will meet with them to determine what is preventing the residents from moving out and establish a plan for them.

The tiny houses, 8 feet by 12 feet, will be heated and insulated, and the site will have case manager offices, a community kitchen, hygiene facilities and a laundry room, according to the announcement from LIHI.

“The tiny houses are going to be used as a way to help folks if they’re in an unsafe RV or they need that extra step to get into permanent housing and they’re trying to just get used to life outside their vehicle,” Castle said.

Residents will have to follow a

code of conduct to reside at the village. This code of conduct outlines the expected behavior and standards that must be followed by program participants. Residents will not be able to consume drugs or alcohol publicly or on adjacent property, but LIHI does not regulate what residents do inside the houses.

Castle said, like other villages, a community advisory council will be set up for stakeholders to hear about what is taking place at the village, the services being provided, the progress being made and more. Those meetings are open to the public. Castle said people will also have many other opportunities to get involved at the site.

To see the official announcement about the village, see the Salmon Bay Village Community Meeting Flyer on Google Drive: drive. google.com/file/d/167Ce0bNJEC 2V1mcgEs2uDSWJVFAeKAXe/ view.

Queen Anne resident receives neurodiversity award

Saturday night at historic Washington Hall, Queen Anne’s Trenton Scott received the Youth Advocate Award at Ryther’s NeurodiverseNW ‘23 event.

Rhyther is an organization that provides outpatient mental health programs to help young people who are struggling with trauma, substance abuse and autism spectrum disorders, according to the website. They serve more than 800 children, youth and young adults each month, regardless of ability to pay, gender identity, sexual orientation, race or ethnicity or place of origin. The annual event celebrates the neurodiverse community in the Pacific Northwest, bringing together hearts and minds from all over the region.

This year’s event featured Dr. Raffael Boccamazzo, an author with autism, psychologist and clinical director of Take This -- a group supporting mental health and neurodiversity in the gaming industry Rhonda Smith-Banchero, director of organizational equity and inclusion at Downtown Emergency Services; ChrisTiana ObeySumner, founder of Epiphanies of Equity and autistic candidate for Seattle City Council, position 5; and also honored Dr. Cassie Martin, executive director of special education at the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction OSPI, as a community champion.

Scott is a proud alum of John Hay Elementary School, McClure Middle School and Ballard High School and received his associate degree in hospitality management from Seattle Central College. He was honored with this year’s Youth Advocate Award to celebrate the many positive ways he affects his community.

During COVID, he was an essential worker at the Magnolia Metropolitan Market, serving customers as a frontline deli clerk and sandwich maestro. More recently, Scott is employed as a peer mentor with Summit Community Center.

Ben Wahl, the founder of Aspiring Youth and Delphi Young Adults Program, described Scott as an inspiration to the community and a role model for community members with autism.

“Throughout the pandemic, Trenton always provided

support and encouragement to his neurodiverse peers,” he said. “He would send them positive messages and always had a kind and uplifting word.” Scott first met Wahl at Aspiring Youth in 2009 and says their relationship has grown and evolved over the years.

“Back when I was a teenager, Aspiring Youth was a major help to me. I felt more accepted than ever before” Scott said.

After being bullied at the neighborhood summer camps, Scott said he was really excited at the chance to meet “other

campers who were just like me and didn’t feel like they were outcasts.” He said it’s an environment where your friendship circle grows and has multiple opportunities that are available. He is currently participating in the Delphi Young Adult’s program.

Scott’s father, Joseph Scott, said that he’s really impressed with his son’s amazing strides in both his communication and organization skills.

“He has always been an empathetic and carrying individual, but the most growth

that we have seen is in his ability to communicate with the neurotypical community.”

Joseph Scott said.

The theme of the evening was a celebration of the diverse talents and dedication of the larger community.

“When we come together, we can do incredible things,” Trenton Scott said.

To find out about upcoming Ryther events for the neurodiverse community or to get involved as a volunteer, go to Ryther.org, or call 206-5170241.
