QA resident Bob Kettle wants to bring pragmatic, progressive decision-making to City Council

Queen Anne resident Robert Kettle isn’t new to civic duty and public service. He is a retired Naval o cer, where he served 22 years before moving to Seattle, and a former member of the Queen Anne Community Council.

Kettle is one of four people registered with King County Elections as challengers for incumbent City Councilman Andrew Lewis’s District 7 seat, a crowded race that will be whittled down to two in the Aug. 1 primary.

e other challengers, according to King County Elections, are Seattle Police Department o cer Aaron Marshall, owner of Piroshki Piroshki Olga Sagan, software engineer Wade Sowders and licensed private investigator Isabelle Kerner.

Kettle has been involved in the community for some time as a member of the Queen Anne Community Council board, West Precinct Advisory Council, Queen Anne Block Watch Network, World

A airs Council Seattle, Ballard Eagleson VFW Post 3063, the Society of White House Military Aides, Veterans for Patty Murray and the 36th Legislative District Democrats.

He says he is not a politician and is new to the political process, so his campaign for the District 7 council seat has been an education.

“It’s been quite the opportunity to learn about our democratic process with a grassroots approach,” he said.

Kettle, who describes himself as a pragmatic progressive, said one of the reasons he is running for political o ce is a desire to help create new leadership on the council, which he believes is currently lacking and myopic in its policy and decisions.

“Yes, we need to lead with compassion but also wisdom,” he said, adding many of the decision the council members have made in the last three years have created unintended consequences and negative impacts in many areas of the city, such as

public safety and the business community and more.

Kettle said the City Council needs to think bigger in its solutions and tries to consider impacts to every sector and resident before making a decision, such as with public safety and mental health.

“We cannot succeed at public safety if we don’t also succeed at mental health,” he said.

As well, Kettle said the City Council needs to take a more uni ed approach to governing and work better together and pursue more partnerships with other governmental agencies.

“We need a City Council that works well together and works well together with others in the region and county and state,” he said.

Within the city, however, Kettle said the new City Council needs to do more to improve relationships with di erent stakeholders, such as business communities. He said the city is in danger of losing a large number of small businesses, which

C’EST LA VIE

I’d like to begin by saying:

I love what I do. I am so grateful to be an author and speaker, appreciative of the programmers who invite me, excited to share my work with willing listeners. Ten women in a book club or hundreds in a conference room, it doesn’t matter.

However.

ere are times when if I was also the person assigned to hold the door open for the audience members as they left, I’d want to trip a couple of them.

I often use the line, “c’est la vie,” by which I mean “such is life,” all the while wishing it wasn’t.

A few events — and there are always a few — just back re for one reason or another, so that I have to pray for the stamina to hang in there when all I am feeling is so pissed o that, at any minute, I fear it will show.

As I write this, I’m thinking that Seattle is not the same city as it was before the pandemic, but I expect this because I’m not the same woman. A lot has happened, even more has followed, and it feels like way too much and not nearly enough.

Either way, my ties to Seattle have only intensi ed.

No matter what draws me downtown, I always take a moment to stop and take in the view of Elliott Bay and give thanks for all Seattle was, is struggling to be again, and for the beautiful nature that surrounds it either way. Here is the city I know so well. Two decades ago, it cast a spell on me that helped build a wonderful — for a writer at least — career. I came looking for footing in a promising new city, never really coming around to the weather, but never happier.

patient attitude toward each other as witnessed by a writer who doesn’t look down at her phone when she’s out and about but pays close attention. To everything.

Still, one would think (hope!) that some would be better at decorum, especially those who have had every opportunity to practice it. Take one prestigious downtown club (here’s a clue: Fourth and Marion). After my last author event there, I thought of someone I haven’t thought of in years. She and I were bartenders together, and we could count on the construction workers and cops to tip well. But the white-collar guys? Not so much. Causing her to whisper in my ear, “ ose with the most give the least.”

Here’s what happened: Twenty members of said Prestigious Club registered for my talk. Five showed up. e programmer was disappointed. I was disappointed. But that’s not the worst of it. Out of the ve, four were eating tacos, three were noticeably intoxicated, two were on time, one bought a book, but only after I embarrassed her into it. And you know a hometown audience is the hardest, so I didn’t sleep well the night before. (It’s been suggested I give up red wine in the evening, and I will … think about it.)

But the yin yang, dark and light, of being a speaker, of being alive, is that the opposite experience is right around the corner.

eager to free itself since the reversal of Roe V. Wade. To recap: I call out the evangelists for spending so much money to ensure women cannot have nal say over their reproductive healthcare options.

One comment from a reader really got to me: “I marched the streets for CHOICE in the 1960s, after going through a hell experience in my early 20’s when access to abortion meant you had to beg a panel of doctors that you would commit suicide if you remained pregnant. My mother always said, ‘Abortions would be a nickel on every street corner if men could get pregnant.’ ”

So, I’ve been wondering what it is, exactly, about our present city — our present world — that has brought about in too many of us a neglect of courtesy. Is it the nearly three years of staying at home? e constant, repetitive, low-frequency fear of the 24-hour news cycle? I don’t know. What I know is that rudeness has become a given lately, no matter where I nd myself. Add to this an increasingly less-than-

Sure enough, later in the week, I was a keynote speaker for an international organization in a convention center in Pennsylvania. Yes, I had to travel by air to get there and not just hump up Madison pulling a carton of books behind me. But, no, those hundreds of listeners were not eating tacos and slurping Merlot through my talk. ey were … generous, there is no other word for it. Will I try to emulate the generosity I admired in them? De nitely.

And then.

A few days later, my new column came out. And while I’ve never received so many positive emails from readers, a few others didn’t like it one bit. It was one of those columns that literally wrote me,

But my husband copied his emails and marched on down to the department. When I wrote for the Northwest Life section of e Seattle Times, I had to get a restraining order. When I began at this paper, I had to get a restraining order. I don’t feel like getting another, but I will if I have to. For now, after his second email, I had a second glass of wine despite earlier advice not to have a second glass of wine. And I let his words go.

Well, I am trying to let them go.

help sustain the city’s commerce, as well as the neighborhoods in which they reside. He said city leaders need to acknowledge how they have been a ected in the past few years, adding that if they do not recognize that crime negatively impacts small business owners’ will and determination to stay in business, as well as their nancial bottom line, they are putting every small business at risk in the city and jeopardizing people’s’ livelihoods and the neighborhoods they are seeking to represent.

“ e rst responsibility of government is to create a safe, vibrant community,” he said.

As far as the growth of the city, Kettle said he supports densi cation of neighborhoods, as long as decisions allow for communities to protect industry, their identities and promotes healthy environmental practices.

If elected, Kettle said he will work with his counterparts to make informed decisions that support infrastructure, improve public safety, businesses and partnerships in and outside the city.

And even though the redistricting process changed District 7 boundaries and shifted a portion of Magnolia to District 6, he will not only focus on the segment in his district.

“I may only represent part of Magnolia, but I will advocate for all of Magnolia,” he said.

THIS REFRESHING SALAD CAN MAKE A MEAL

Quick and simple meals are the name of the game when warm weather beckons and spending time in the kitchen is less attractive. Salads are best during the midsummer

when they can be comprised of fresh and ripe ingredients plucked right from the garden. What’s more, salad can be a side dish or even the main meal if fortified with a little protein and some bread.

This recipe for “Authentic Greek Salad” from “Clueless in the Kitchen: Cooking for Beginners” (Firefly Books) by Evelyn Raab is ideal.

Authentic Greek Salad

Serves 4 to 6

• 4 medium tomatoes, cut into 1/2-inch chunks

• 1 seedless English cucumber, cut into 1/2-inch chunks

• 1 small red onion, diced

• 1/3 cup Zorba the Greek Dressing (see below)

• 4 ounces feta cheese, crumbled (about 1 cup)

• ½ cup black olives (kalamata or other

brine-cured ones are best)

• Salt and black pepper, to taste

In a large bowl, toss together the tomatoes, cucumber and onion. Add the dressing and toss to mix. Sprinkle in the feta cheese and olives, and toss gently. Taste the salad, adjust the seasoning with additional salt and pepper if you think it needs it and serve immediately.

Zorba the Greek Dressing

• ½ cup olive oil

• 3 tablespoons lemon juice

• 1 teaspoon crumbled dried oregano

• ½ teaspoon salt

• ¼ teaspoon black pepper

In a small bowl, whisk together all the ingredients until combined. Makes ¾-cup dressing and enough for a couple of bowls of Greek salad. You can keep any leftover dressing in the fridge for about a week.

Commentary: Moonrise Bakery worth a trip

I love pastries. So, naturally, whenever I drive along Queen Anne Ave, Moonrise Bakery always catches my eye. This past Monday, I finally decided to try it, and I wanted to share my opinions on this fun local bakery.

As I approached the bakery by foot, I noticed its plethora of outdoor seating. Even though it was a gloomy Monday morning, many people were utilizing all the cozy and covered seating that Moonrise Bakery had to offer. As summer approaches, I can only imagine how packed its patio is going to be, filled with customers enjoying a beautiful Seattle summer day, alongside a delightful pastry.

When I entered the bakery, I was amazed by its calm ambiance, as well as the large selection of pastries available. While I would have loved to try every single pastry that Moonrise had to offer, I ended up deciding to try six different pastries: a butter croissant, a chocolate croissant, a berry kouign amann, a cinnamon twist, a coconut macaroon cookie and a bacon cheddar breakfast pastry.

Starting off with a classic butter croissant, it looked a little pale on the outside, but was nevertheless incredibly flaky and tasted relatively decent. However, because it wasn’t amazing, both in its looks and taste, I give it a 7/10.

Next was the chocolate croissant (or, if you’re feeling fancy, pan au chocolat), which

was, by far, a tastier version of the regular croissant. There was a thin layer of chocolate throughout the entire croissant, yet it wasn’t overpowering. Every single bite I took, I knew I was eating a chocolate croissant, which means it was absolutely perfect; I give it a 9/10.

After trying two quintessential pastries, I moved onto something a little less mainstream and tried the berry kouign amann, which looked like a muffin pastry with a raspberry compote on top. I wanted to love it because it was so unique, but it was messy to eat and occasionally a little dry. Any time I had a bite with the raspberry compote, it tasted delicious, as the raspberry perfectly complemented the pastry’s sweetness. However, every bite without any raspberry compote left me unsatisfied. Overall, I would give it a 6/10.

I then tried the cinnamon twist. As these are some of my favorite pastries, I went into my first bite with high expectations, and as the cinnamon twist entered my mouth, my expectations were somehow exceeded in every aspect. It had many layers, the cinnamon flavor was pronounced, and, even though it was very sugary, it wasn’t too sweet; I loved every bite I took, so, without question, I give it a 9/10.

In a similar sugary vein, I tried a coconut macaroon cookie with chocolate beautifully drizzled on top, and it was pretty decent due to its moistness and strong coconut flavor. In most of the macaroons I’ve previously had, the coconut

tends to overpower the chocolate, but, in Moonrise’s macaroon, the coconut to chocolate ratio was perfect; they worked in harmony. I give it an 8/10. For the final pastry, I wanted to try something slightly more filling, so I opted for a bacon and cheddar breakfast pastry. I heated it up in the microwave, and I would recommend you do the same. The classic combination of bacon and cheddar

didn’t disappoint, especially because there was bacon in almost every bite. This pastry was genuinely so good, so I am happy to give it a 10/10.

Overall, Moonrise Bakery was a charming bakery, both in its decor and in its food. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for tasty pastries, especially a high-quality cinnamon twist or bacon and cheddar breakfast pastry,

look forward to giving it many more visits in the near future.

Moonrise Bakery, 1805 Queen Anne Ave. North, is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. Visit moonrise-bakery. com for more information.

King County invites comment on Comprehensive Plan updates

From June 1-July 15, King County residents have a oncea-decade opportunity to offer their input and make significant changes to the updates proposed for the Comprehensive Plan, a document that guides where people live, work, and play in unincorporated communities outside of city limits.

To provide input, visit publicinput.com/y8200.

The Comprehensive Plan drives county decisions and planning for services in unincorporated areas, such as where homes, offices, or stores can be built; how roads, buildings, and trees contribute to the look and feel of neighborhoods; investments in transit, sewers, and parks; protection of working farms and forests; and access to clean water, clean air, and a healthy environment.

“The comprehensive plan is our chance to join together and chart our course to a better future,” County Executive Dow Constantine said. “Here is the opportunity to provide County officials input on how our region should manage growth, increase affordable housing, tackle climate change, advance racial and social justice, and provide a robust transportation network. I encourage everyone to participate during the open comment period.”

Since January 2022, when the initial scoping began, King County staff have received a record 10,000 comments from the public weighing in on their priorities for their neighborhoods. These

priorities have been incorporated into the public review draft, which is now available for further input.

The Comprehensive Plan draft update contains a number of options King County is considering to build affordable housing, tackle climate change, and ensure social equity in our region:

Affordable housing

Middle housing: Encouraging and streamlining the development of more naturally affordable housing such as duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes.

Inclusionary housing: Creating an incentive program that would increase the supply of affordable housing by offering developers costsaving measures if they voluntarily include some affordable units in the building.

Climate change

Cleaner energy and wildfire safeguards: Encouraging a reduction in fossil fuel use in buildings, utilities, and transportation, and promoting the use of renewable resources. Collaborating and planning with community partners to improve forest health and reduce the impacts of wildfires.

Stormwater improvements: Working with other jurisdictions on a regional stormwater system that will make the water cleaner, add more green space for people to enjoy, and protect against erosion from stronger storms and flooding.

Social equity

Racially disparate impacts report: Analyzing how past land use regulations, such as development decisions and neighborhood investments, have impacted Black, Indigenous, and People of Color households and identifying actions to repair these past harms.

Housing stability: Supporting projects, strategies, and investments that promote housing stability and prevent people from having to leave their homes due to rising costs

Climate Equity: Supporting climate solutions that distribute bene ts equitably, particularly to frontline communities most impacted by climate-related harm.

General planning proposals

Transportation investments: Investing in safe, equitable, and accessible transportation for people walking, biking, driving, using wheelchairs, or transit -- with a focus on communities most in need

Rural development: Protecting the unique character of rural communities by limiting the impacts of resorts, materials processing sites, mining operations, and mixed-use developments in rural areas.

In addition to providing feedback via a survey and email, there will be two opportunities to talk to King County staff to learn more about these proposals and offer feedback:

Thursday, June 22: Open House, Southgate Roller Rink, 4-8 p.m.
