here is something wondrous about a wide expanse, where the eye can take in loping swaths of curated, symphonic color. When done well, the scale makes it all the more impressive. However, having all that real estate also gives the designer some leeway – your eye does take rests and blinks occasionally. So, you can have ombre effects and small moments that differ throughout the composition, too. The point is, for a plant collector like myself, you can get away with using more plants.
But sometimes, and more and more these days, I find myself struck by the power of two.
The power of deciding on a double-whammy of a combo that doesn’t try to be everything all at once, and as a result, packs a real visual punch.
Like a two-color outfit, combinations like these are supremely restful to the eye – it’s a real no-brainer, literally, with fewer elements to observe, but a lot to appreciate if done well. All designer and artists do this, to make arresting compositions in interiors, flower arrangements or great outfits. In the garden, hopefully, you are making a combination that will last.
To make such a combo, find plants that like similar growing conditions. There’s not much point in setting your couple up to fail. Then find some contrast in habit, leaf-shape, flower color. Now that your brain only has two plants to
think about, you can excite it with wildly disparate elements. If you think of the taste sensation of a stew, with layered flavor, that’s the same experience as a mixed border – there lots of combinations, colors and textures to take in. In contrast, one of these combos is like salted caramel sauce on vanilla ice cream, which makes your senses richochet
from one to the other – are we salty or sweet? Examples include wide leaves with skinny, spreading with upright, curly with straight, lime with purple, or blue with orange. If subtle elegance is your jam, you can turn the contrast dial down seeking some color echoes from bloom to leaf to stem. In a sunny hillside, I used to mix the spikes
of Baptisia ‘Carolina Moonlight’ with rose ‘Graham Thomas’ whose round blossoms where the same soft buttery tones.
But sometimes near-misses, unexpected colors that are non-quite matching nor opposite can add a bit of spice. In color theory, you can find some of those labeled splitcomplements on the color wheel –
instead of going for the complement directly across from your color, you go for the complement’s neighbors on both sides.
At my recent visit to the Bellevue Botanical Garden’s Perennial Border, I took at least fifty photos, but the most eye-catching one was just two plants. It was a fern with crisply outlined textural fronds paired with one of those mega-hostas with variegated leaves that look great with almost anything. Bam.
Almost as cool, at home I’m admiring a combination in a dryshade border with a blocked-South view. I have a variegated Carex, possibly the cultivar ‘Feather Falls,’ paired with Cornus ‘Artic Sun,’ a yellow-twig dogwood shrub. In winter, the bare stems of the dogwood match with the sedge’s creamy leaves, and in summer, the dogwood’s bold, veined foliage stands out against the strappy sedge.

It’s been almost 6 years since I replaced my iPhone, and though peer pressure isn’t as strong as it once once, I still fear there is still a lot of it ahead. I know this because I just had the battery in my phone replaced for fty bucks and it now holds a charge as long as it did when it was new from the box. So why replace it?
e Apple Store Genius (I’m not being facetious, that’s what they are called) is my rst challenge. He looks at my phone and just rolls his eyes. And while guring out my syncing problem, he talks so fast with a tone so condescending I feel a thrum of panic rise in my chest. And here I thought I was a smart, somewhat capable woman.
Whenever a techy treats me this way, as if I am unhip, unintelligent, because I can’t communicate at a clip about . . . whatever he is talking about, I just sigh. I wanted to face him and dance a few ballet moves: Plié, Saute, Allegro, Arabesque, Pas De Bourrée, and roll my eyes at him when he can’t make out which movement is which, say how they interconnect, or pronounce their names. P t, what do my mean you don’t know?
e hardest part was convincing tech-support I really didn’t want a new phone. Not only am I not taking photos of everything that is happening, or beautiful, or simply there, I often feel that we have developed into a new species of humans who believe we can’t survive if we don’t record every detail of our lives.
at world looked to me like a world addicted to distraction, not at all like a world I wanted to live in. I remember thinking that that world would dehumanize our reliance on each other for company, mess with our self-image, our ability to concentrate. It appeared like WALL-E on every corner, at every table in a restaurant, sleeping next to us at night. e images grew larger and larger in my head until I nally gured out what they were trying to tell me.
And today, well, here we are.
When I got o the train in Palo Alto, I sat down on a bench, breathless with the idea that one day soon we’d all be willingly possessed by a phone. I looked back at the train pulling away and saw that man’s eager eyes, saw my smile that was fear in disguise, saw a time ahead I didn’t quite trust.
ink what you like about prophecies, coincidence, or chance. To this day I feel as if I was on that train with someone with whom I was supposed to meet. Just so today, when I look around and see how real Apple’s strategy has become, it helps make my uneasiness a little more tolerable.
But there are times when my uneasiness becomes so agitated I need to intervene.
Mary Lou Sanelli Falling Awakebums (okay . . . they were zooming in on their butt cracks!) in those itty-bitty thongs. I saw how young they were. How vulnerable. I felt a bit as if I was the only one who could save them. From themselves. I walked up and asked them to please, please, please, think twice before posting those images.
It almost frightened me to feel so driven by concern.
Maybe I should have just turned away and let Instagram have its way with them, but how could I?
What is more, I am not really willing to “mind my own business” (which is what one of the girls promptly told me to do) when worry comes on that strong, especially the part of me that can’t bear to imagine the people who would view those images.

Which is pretty much what an Apple employee said to me when iPhones were just starting to appear. I sat across from him on the Caltrain headed toward Cupertino (Apple’s hometown), and that is how he described his industry’s intent: to make us feel as if we literally don’t exist without our phones. “And we’ll get there,” he said, “one age group at a time.” I took a deep breath, breathing in as he spoke, breathing out as I tried to imagine what the world would look like if everyone walked around with a tiny computer in their hand.

If you live in a northern climate, it can be hard to feel exactly when summer begins, but a few weeks ago summer arrived with all the luster and sunniness of a Hawaiian holiday. And down where the waves break over the beach pebbles, past the driftwood but before the murky seaweed, there were two girls, maybe thirteen or fourteen years of age, who wore bikinis. Bikinis with V-shape bottoms that made me remember a line I’d heard, is this what feminism has done for our daughters, brought out their inner burlesque?
I couldn’t keep my eyes o them. Not because the midafternoon sun had just found us and everything was suddenly more dazzling. But because the girls were—and you may want to prepare yourself— taking pictures of each other’s

and Visit Seattle, we all saw this as a catalyst for an exciting future in our region,” says Beth Knox, President & CEO of the Seattle Sports Commission. “Hosting the rst premier sporting event in over 20 years is a thrilling precedent to establish as we carry this momentum forward into our planning for the 2024 NHL Winter Classic, the 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Regionals and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Seattle has quickly established itself as a world-class sports market and travel destination.”

In advance of AllStar Week, Visit Seattle worked with the Seattle Monorail Services, Seattle Center, and Climate Pledge Arena to bring about the rst-ever art installation on the Seattle Center Monorail’s guideway columns. Conceived by local muralist Brady Black, the monorail columns will be adorned with murals depicting eight stars of the game and eight Seattle sports fans, signifying the connection between baseball and the greater community. In designing the murals, Black developed a paintby-number system that allowed youth artists
I know that interfering like this just might be too pushy of me — jeez, today it could get me shot — and that maybe I should have just brought my phone to the beach and texted people miles away instead of paying close attention to the ones in front of me. And that this may be keeping me from adjusting to our new world and accepting it as it is.
But, to be honest with you, I wouldn’t even know how to begin to do that.

Some foliage demands such attention it needs a quieter partner. I’m thinking of grand showstoppers like rodgersia and canna, but also some groundcovers with intricate leaves that reward getting close, like some sedums, myrtle spurge (Euphorbia myrsinities) or shbone cotoneaster. ink anything with really distinctive shape or variegation.
I think gardeners with great foliage combos deserve bonus points for a) noticing foliage, so underrated, and b) taking advantage of the longevity of foliage compared to owers. However, it’s just as fun to play with your owers.

Sixty years later, the system continues to serve as an important transportation link to Seattle Center and its surrounding neighborhoods. We look forward to welcoming baseball fans to our city! We are excited to play our part in supporting local artists, promoting major civic events, and helping to re-energize downtown Seattle with new and interesting art displayed on this historic system.”

Right now, an adjacent Hydrangea ‘Pistachio’ is singing in the same pink harmony as its owers emerge pale lime, to be increasingly edged in pink.
A parking strip in my neighborhood made a zinger of a pairing this spring – strong, variegated Iris pallida with the surprise of seasonal re-engine red tulips. I can’t forget it.
Just think – if you start with a killer combo and just keep building more, your garden will be amazing.
Path: July 7-11 roughout the entirety of the All-Star Week proceedings, fans are encouraged to walk or bike to T-Mobile Park and Lumen Field using the Green Path. Developed by the MLB and the Mariners as a sustainable method of transportation between downtown, the Waterfront, and the stadiums, the path also drives attendee spending to local businesses curated by Intentionalist. Additionally, Visit Seattle and Intentionalist have collaborated on a map that highlights BIPOC-, women-, and LGBTQ+-owned small businesses along this route to encourage support for local places to eat, drink,
and shop that make Seattle special. Collaborating with Gigs4U and the Seattle Sports Commission, Visit Seattle will showcase the Paci c Northwest’s strong music culture with performers entertaining fans as they travel along the Green Path.
Laura Clise, CEO & Founder of Intentionalist shares the value of
exploring Seattle through the lens of small businesses and the diverse people behind them.
“Small businesses are a wonderful way to get to know Seattle, because they re ect and celebrate the diversity of the region,” Clise says.
“From restaurants and shops that have been a part of the city for
generations, to the cafes and galleries that infuse our city with new energy and cultural perspectives. We’re proud to collaborate with Visit Seattle to put diverse small businesses on the map, and make it easy for fans to get to know and support them as part of their AllStar Week Seattle experience.”
Blueberries should be a delicious part of people’s daily diets because this flavorful fruit packs a nutritious punch. Blueberries are a great source of antioxidants, which can help the body fend off various illnesses.
Native to North America, blueberries are available fresh, frozen and canned and are used in a variety of recipes. Plus, they’re right at home whether one is serving breakfast, dinner or dessert. However, many people feel that blueberries are best eaten as pie filling.
Various pastries showcase blueberries, including the French galette. A galette is not a pie, but more of a freeform crusty cake.
However, it is similar to pie, making it a welcome alternative to that popular pastry. This recipe for “Blueberry Galette,” courtesy of the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council, is a delicious treat that’s perfect for entertaining.
Blueberry Galette
8 portions
Crust
3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
11⁄2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons sugar
4 ounces lard or shortening, cut into 1⁄2inch pieces and frozen
1 cup unsalted butter, cut into 1⁄2-inch pieces and refrigerated
1⁄2 cup ice water
1 teaspoon vodka
Filling
8 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
3⁄4 cup sugar, plus 2 tablespoons, separated
31⁄2 tablespoons cornstarch
1⁄4 teaspoon salt
1 lemon, zested
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 egg
1 tablespoon water
Crust
1. Combine the flour, salt and sugar in a food processor. Add the butter and lard.
2. Use the food processor to work the butter and lard into the flour by pulsing it until the butter is in pea-sized pieces.
3. Whisk the water and vodka together and add it to the flour/butter mixture a few tablespoons at a time. It will start to look shaggy, but not dry. It should hold together when you squeeze it in your hand.
4. Gently press the dough into a ball using a pastry scraper or your hands. Divide the dough into two pieces and create round disks. Wrap the dough in plastic and refrigerate for at least an hour, or overnight.
Filling
1. In a small bowl, combine 3⁄4 cup sugar, cornstarch, salt, and lemon zest. Massage the zest into the sugar.
2. In a large bowl, toss together the blueberries and lemon juice. Add the sugar/ lemon zest mixture and gently stir to coat the blueberries.
3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. On a floured surface, roll out the chilled pie dough into a 1⁄8-inch-thick-circle. Dust off any extra flour and lay crust onto the prepared pan.
4. Mound the blueberry filling in the middle of crust. Fold and crimp the dough up so that it covers at least 2 inches of the filling. Freeze the shaped galette for at least 15 minutes to chill the dough.
5. Preheat the oven to 425 F and set rack in middle of the oven.
6. Just before baking, beat the egg and water together and brush the edges with egg wash. Sprinkle crust with the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar.
7. Bake for 30 minutes, then turn the oven down to 350 F and bake for an additional 30 minutes.
This recipe yields two 12-inch galette crusts. Extra dough can be stored in an airtight container for up to one month.
The senior living industry has so many acronyms it could benefit from its own dictionary.
For example, Bayview used to be classified as a CCRC, or Continuing Care Retirement Community. It is now known as an LPC, or Life Plan Community. Nothing has changed other than the acronym LPC replacing the acronym CCRC. I would like to offer another acronym: LEC, or Life Extension Community. Research shows that residents of LPCs experience greater longevity. Here are some possible explanations.
Many of you are already familiar with the Dimensions of Wellness. While there are many different models, most include physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual. Well, unsurprisingly it so happens that LPCs frequently excel at providing opportunities and removing
barriers such that residents are more easily able to achieve success at one or more of these factors.
It’s easy to see why moving to an LPC can optimize one’s ability to add fitness into one’s day with the variety of classes offered. However, you don’t need to move to an LPC to access fitness classes. Throw on a pair of sneakers and get moving in whatever way suits you. Similarly, some of you may attend some of our more academic programs, like our recent art history lecture series with University of Washington lecturer Kolya Rice. So, while you throw on your
sneakers, seek out one of the many venues that offer lifetime learning in Seattle to enhance your intellectual wellness.
Social wellness is built in to the LPC model. It can be more challenging to expand one’s social circle as one ages, particularly as family and friends move on or pass on. However, there are still ways to expand one’s social circle and gain an upper hand on the vocational wellness piece as well: volunteer! Our city is loaded with volunteer opportunities to help support schools, hospitals, the arts, and other nonprofit organizations.
The spiritual dimension of wellness tunes into one’s ability to find purpose and meaning, with or without belonging to a particular congregation. Most LPCs also make this easy, as many have an onsite chaplain as well as ecumenical spiritual programs. Joining a faith-based group in your community is one of many ways to fulfill this wellness dimension.
Yes, research shows that LPC residents experience enhanced longevity compared to those who choose to stay at home. However, there are ways to build in the advantages that come with an LPC into your own lifestyle to improve your health span as well as your life span.

Idon’t sleep all night on a bed of spikes, but I do lie on one for about a half an hour before I turn out the light. And I have fallen asleep.
It’s an acupressure mat, and while the spikes are made of plastic, they are plenty pointy. e mat’s directions caution against any sudden movements – something you won’t forget after your rst mistake.
Not to sound like an internet ad —
“After Doing is One Weird ing, Seattle Woman Sleeps Like a Baby” — but it is weird, at least in the U.S., and it does help me sleep.
ere are several makers of such mats. Shakti is a little more expensive, so I went with a Spoonk cotton mat for my experiment. It has 6210 spikes, is made with hypoallergenic, organic materials, and is free of ame retardants. If I lay on my back with the top at my shoulders, it goes to just above my knees. It’s a mat covered in a grid of sharp silicone spikes every inch or so.
When I lower myself down, gently, without a trace of shimmy, I may feel some pinching. Like a Lego block, if you step on it unexpectedly, it hurts like heck.
So why am I subjecting myself to low-level pain?
Mainly to improve my sleep, because all the wellness experts agree that sleep is probably the biggest needle-mover in terms of your readiness for the day. Loss of sleep can impair your cognition, reaction time, and even make you crave extra carbs! e other reason, the one that keeps me coming back, is because immediately after that little pinch, I get a full dose of Ahhhh. ere’s a rush of warmth. It’s probably blood
rushing to the area ready to form blisters as needed, but it feels great. Whether this is now a conditioned response from me because I’ve been doing it regularly for about a week, or causality, I can’t be sure. At any rate, I pick up my bedside book, and forget all the spikes. I have fallen asleep on it on several occasions.
I can also say that my Fitbit Charge HR shows excellent levels of deep sleep – averaging an extra half-hour per night–after using my bed of training nails. I’ve achieved three nights with a sleep score over 90 (Excellent) while using it, so I’m hooked, pun intended.
It looks like I’m not the only one trying this technique. Some corporations will fund acupressure mats through their health-saving-plan accounts, according to a 2021 USA Today story.
Author and physician Dr. Mark Hyman (“Food: What the Heck Should I Eat”) says using an acupressure mat helps to “increase your parasympathetic nervous system and get you into deep relaxation before sleep.”
Your nervous system has two modes: sympathetic (aka “ ghtor- ight”) or parasympathetic (relaxation). Naturally, barring lifethreatening danger, we’ll operate more e ciently physically and mentally in the parasympathetic, because the body and mind talk to each other.
Designed to mimic the e ects of acupuncture at home, touted bene ts of acupressure mats include decreased anxiety, heightened sense of well-being, and relief from chronic pain or muscle tension. A study here https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/ articles/PMC3446809/ concluded that “mechanical needle stimulation pads” was an “e ective treatment”
for participants with neck and low back pain. One main di erence is that an acupuncturist targets certain meridians (energy channels in Chinese medicine) to stimulate whereas the mats attack their surface area indiscriminately.
It’s recommended to ease into the practice by laying the mat on a soft surface like your bed with a thin barrier like a blanket or wearing a t-shirt to lessen the initial shock and work up to 15-20 minutes at a time. When one becomes really advanced, they can lay the mat on the oor for a more intense experience.
e Spoonk company suggests the mat can be used before sleep for up to 40 minutes as I do, to wake up in the morning for 10 minutes, to stretch post workout for 10 minutes to reduce sti ness, or even (for the very brave) lying on your belly to stimulate digestion and energy for 20 minutes (T-shirt recommended).
It warns pregnant women, people with very sensitive or autoimmunechallenged skin, and those taking blood thinners or with high blood pressure to avoid using the mat.
In terms of choosing a mat to try, the pricing relates to materials and the sturdiness of construction (i.e., how long the needles will last without breaking o ), the density and number of needles on the mat, and bonus gear like a carrying bag or needled pillows for battling head and neck tension.
I have also used it on my feet at the end of a long day with good results.
e videos show people rolling up the mat as a pillow, which felt good to me but left my uber-sensitive bamboo sheets looking like the aftermath of a cat ght, so be careful where you roll your spikes, people.
So, if you’re not ready for full-on acupuncture, and are interested in trying a new way to relax, consider starting with a travel size or pillow and embrace the spikes. Up next week: tips for walking on hot coals. Just kidding. I haven’t been to a Tony Robbins retreat, but that doesn’t mean I won’t….
Mayor Bruce Harrell in partnership with Uplift Northwest has announced the relaunch of the Gra ti Abatement Program. While the program will be active in all parts of downtown Seattle, it will have an increased emphasis on gra ti abatement in the Chinatown-International District.
“We know that gra ti and tagging not only detract from the vibrancy of our neighborhoods, but also have tangible impacts on our small businesses whose storefronts are defaced and on marginalized communities who are targeted by hate speech,” said Mayor Harrell. “We must combat a surge in gra ti with a One Seattle approach, building partnerships with the community to nd thoughtful, sustainable solutions that improve the quality of life for everyone in our city. e relaunched Gra ti Abatement Program will enhance our e orts to beautify our city while also developing our workforce, giving more people critical job training so they can access new employment opportunities and build better lives.”
“ e opportunity to include this new training program in our courses and certi cations at Uplift Northwest is invigorating, and we’ve seen a great deal of interest from our participants in joining the Gra ti Abatement Program,” said Max Churaisin, Senior Manager, Mission Programs at Uplift Northwest. “We expect continued enrollment and hope to see more teams deployed throughout the city.”
Started by a group of a students at City University of Seattle as their nal Enactus project, the Gra ti Abatement Program was launched as a pilot program in 2022. Workers from Uplift Northwest were provided training on gra ti removal and safety and then deployed to the Belltown neighborhood to identify and remove gra ti from problem areas.
e relaunched program will include three full work crews of gra ti removal specialists, a project manager, and eld operations coordinator supported by Uplift Northwest. e teams will receive comprehensive training and curriculum and be dispatched by the City of Seattle and other community partners to identify and abate gra ti on private property. e Gra ti Abatement Program is one pillar of Mayor Harrell’s One Seattle Gra ti Plan to increase assistance to reduce gra ti on private property throughout the city. e plan addresses the surge in gra ti the city has experienced over the last several years. Since 2019, incidents of gra ti reported by the public have grown over 50%.
is program will complement the work of Seattle Public Utilities (SPU), Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), Seattle Center (CEN), and Seattle Parks & Recreation (SPR) teams that remove gra ti from City property and assist the Metropolitan Improvement District (MID) on their abatement e orts.
Over the last 12 months, City sta have removed 100 percent of reported gra ti within 10 business days.
