Council incumbents lead primary voting

Last week’s primary election was a temperature gauge about how voters are feeling in Seattle. The turnout was rather low. Only about 30% of the registered voters in King County turned in their ballots.

Proposition 1 for the Crisis Care Centers Levy passed by an overwhelming 71% majority. And the City Council incumbents all led in their races.

CITY COUNCIL

Due to last year’s redistricting, Magnolia and Queen Anne will no longer be represented by the same City Councilmember, but the incumbents topped the vote in both Districts 6 and 7. Dan Strauss is the Ballard incumbent that led the District 6 vote for the Magnolia side. And

Andrew Lewis is the current councilmember for Queen Anne and Magnolia who will be seeking reelection on the Queen Anne side of District 7.

Lewis said he was “very gratified to have the support of my neighbors to serve another term on the Seattle City Council” and that he hoped to carry the momentum of this grassroots campaign into the general election. His opponent Bob Kettle says that the current City Council is out of balance and that he would bring a “pragmatic vision for a thriving, vibrant Seattle” while taking on the issues of public safety, public health, and homelessness.

Strauss said he felt very good about the results because sometimes it’s hard to tell if the people see the work that he’s

been doing. “I work really hard for the district,” and he credits his accessible office at the Ballard Library for helping interact with the community. “There’s no better transparency than an office with three glass walls,” he said.

Pete Hanning, the Executive Director of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, came in second in D6 and will also be on the ballot in November. According to his website, he is a lifelong resident of Seattle and “will always champion the small businesses throughout Seattle.”

Jon Lisbon, president of Seattle Fair Growth, is one of the D6 candidates that is not advancing to the general election but still had a lot to say. He

Reading Michael Singer’s ‘Living Untethered’

Reading Michael Singer’s book “The Untethered Soul” was a big deal for me. Early on, I think in the first chapter, he writes something to the effect that — A. you can choose to be happy; B. you can be happy for your entire life, no matter what; and C. is it worth ruining your lifelong happiness because someone cut you off on the highway?

That was it. I thought “OK, I’m going to choose that option, because spending time in emotions like frustration, anger, envy, disappointment, is useless, and just makes me miserable without solving anything.”

That’s not to say I don’t feel those things anymore, or that my goal is to stuff all negative emotion down to my toes. My goal is to notice those emotions when they surface, register them, maybe why they’re activated now, and then redirect. I do sometimes wonder if I’ve entered “head in the sand” territory.

good happens, we’re happy. If someone annoys us, we’re angry. The problem is, we tend to gloss over those negative emotions, and stuff them, if not to our toes, somewhere.

Singer believes in human energy systems operating in and around the body. Many traditions have words for the life force perpetuating our energy system you may have heard, such as shakti, qi, ka, or prana.

He says over time those ignored resentments — and even happy preferences — create almost an energetic scar tissue called samskaras in the Hindu tradition when you hold on to and repeat them. These are psychological imprints living in the body for years after an event, blocking the movement and release of energy, causing problems. For most of us, counting irritations all the way to traumas, that’s a lot of samskaras.

(Happily, I’ve also read you can foster positive samskaras from feelings of compassion, acceptance, and gratitude — I don’t know how Singer thinks these affect your energetic system.)

doing so, you will change your relationship with yourself and with everything else.”

IT STARTS WITH YOU:

“Instead of thinking that the new job will do it, the new relationship will do it, or more money and popularity will do it, do the necessary inner work to make it beautiful inside.”

At first, I thought Singer wanted us to delete preferences entirely from our mental programming. Mid-book, I began hearing internal alarm bells when asked what I wanted for dinner. Of course, that is not only impractical, but it would also rob us of the growth of trying new experiences, as well as the pleasure of our favorite ice cream flavors.

As I read on, I realized it’s not the act of having preferences that messes us up, it’s out attachment to our reactions. The goal, he says is to clean up these attachments and make yourself ok inside, so that external events no longer have the power to hijack your experience.

Singer’s latest book “Living Untethered: Beyond the Human Predicament,” takes things to the next level — the uppermost level really, if we’re counting — and I think, the most challenging. His premise asks us to throw off our humanity, in essence, our basic way of relating to the world. While a much shorter book than 2007’s “The Untethered Soul,” “Living Untethered “could be distilled into about a chapter of simple content, but Singer repeats his refrain, expanding with a new arc of nuance in each chapter. Like a koan, such as “What is the sound of one hand clapping?”

it’s deceptively simple. There is a lot of repetition, yet if you pay attention, there’s also a lot to think about.

His premise is that human suffering is caused by the central duality of preference we live by. If something

The very act of having preferences activates these samskaras, Singer writes. Some main points include:

DON’T MAKE IT PERSONAL:

“One of the most amazing things you will ever realize is that the moment in front of you is not bothering you – you are bothering yourself about the moment in front of you. It’s not personal — you are making it personal.”

LOSE-LOSE SITUATIONS:

“You have just made life a lose-lose situation. If anything reminds you of what bothered you before, you lose. If you are not getting to reexperience what you liked before, you lose.”

“You are not going to change the weather by complaining about it. If you are wise, you will start to change your reactions to reality instead of fighting with reality. By

The central practice of releasing these attachments is one of paying attention to your internal reaction to life, catching moments of frustration or disappointment that things aren’t going according to your preset preferences. Singer suggests when you do, to ask yourself “What wants to be released?” and give yourself a minute to process it.

Given that humans think upwards of 6000 thoughts per day, even if you only catch a fraction of them, this will take time. After all, it took you this many years to get here, it will take some time to unravel those accumulated patterns.

Singer covers a lot in “Living Untethered,” in a somewhat meandering style that expounds on everything from consciousness to the cosmos. Some Goodreads reviewers found references to Christ off-putting, but there were also many references to Buddha and other religious teachings. It is largely a conceptual approach, without much specific practicum or exercises. At 216 pages it is not difficult to read, but it could have been edited down. However, there are gems to be found in the turns of the winding river that kept me engaged.

Blue Angels

The Blue Angels made their annual visit to Seattle last weekend for the Seafair festivities. Queen Anne residents were treated to a show as the pilots practiced ahead of the big event. Crowds of people flocked to Kerry Park to get a glimpse of the U.S. Navy’s elite flying team. At the end of the second day, viewers were treated to a close pass of the Space Needle, captured here by Queen Anne photographer Sigma Sreedharan who said, “I got the shot I’ve been hoping to capture.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

TRANSPORTATION LEVY IS KEY ISSUE FOR COUNCIL

The key story in this year’s City Council election in Districts 6 and 7 is the position on next year’s transportation levy renewal. They need to commit to ensuring that the bridge is in the levy. If not, probably another seven years goes by. They must additionally commit to opposing the levy if it reaches the ballot without the bridge. This is to ensure their colleagues don’t give them an out by allowing them to vote no.

If the bridge is not in the levy, it will be clear the city has no intention of replacing it. Next year’s levy should be the bridge levy. Soon you will need drones to deliver your paper.

‘TITANISH’ SAILS INTO GREEN LAKE

This weekend, the unsinkable parody “Titanish” crashes onto the shores of Green Lake.

Back by popular demand, this disaster comedy, directed by Queen Anne’s Mark Siano, was the 2022 Winner of Broadway World’s Best New Musical.

Bruce Hickok Ransom Jr. passed away at the age of 74 on June 11, 2023. His wife of 38 years, Sonia, was by his side.

In his will, Bruce wrote “I am not looking forward to being dead. It wasn’t my idea. As I am writing this letter, I am missing all of you already.” He had an incredible sense of humor, even in his final days. In letters he left for his family, he wrote “Don’t worry” on the envelope, a testament to his constant love and care.

To talk about Bruce is to talk about so many different things – Bruce was a family man, musician, hydroacoustician, car enthusiast, writer, photographer, outdoorsman, and world traveler. He was a meticulous record keeper of his many jobs, performances, hikes, and more. While it would be impossible to share all of his incredible stories, we hope the following does his beautiful life some justice.

Bruce was born in Ames, Iowa to Bruce Hickok Ransom Sr. and Miriam Freridge on January 29, 1949. He was the oldest of 7 siblings and his family moved from Iowa to Arizona, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Washington throughout his youth. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather to his wife Sonia; his children Alicia, Natasha, and Chris; and grandchildren Riley, Jackson, Lily, and Twyla. They remember him as playful, silly, brilliant, adventurous, and kind.

When Bruce was 12 and living in Mississippi, Alabama, and New Orleans, he fell in love with blues music. His father bought him his first guitar at the age of 14 and he started teaching himself music he heard on the radio. He joined his first band as a bass player during his senior year of high school and went on to hone his craft, becoming a respected musician in the Seattle area. Throughout his career, he played in bands with Ron Holden, Brady Anderson, Jay Thomas, Isaac Scott, Mauva Belle, Leon Blue, Taj Mahal, Elvin Bishop, Kathi McDonald, Tony Coleman, Tab Benoit, Kenny Neal, Billy Branch, Jimmy Burns, Mitch Woods, Roy Gaines, Joe Johansen, and many others. His last band was Blues on Tap, with Jim Plano, Steve Peterson, and Ray Hartman. Bruce played over 2000 times in over 200 clubs, festivals, cruises, and other venues, in eight different countries.

He received his BA in English Composition and his BS in Fisheries from the University of Washington.

Bruce was a founding member of Hydroacoustic Technology, Inc. (HTI) and presided as the company’s president from 1990-2007. He managed fisheries studies using acoustic tag and hydroacoustic technologies, conducted worldwide in lakes, rivers and in the sea. He authored over 100 publications and technical reports and taught training courses on the use of acoustic tags and hydroacoustics for fisheries assessment for over 20 years. Bruce retired in 2017. His leadership had a profound impact on the people he worked with, who remember him as a thorough and compassionate colleague with an insatiable sweet tooth.

As a writer, he published nonfiction in Backpacker, Snowy Egret, Big City Rhythm & Blues, Fur-Fish-Game, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Hydro Review, and Northwest (Oregonian), among others. His fiction has been published in Open Spaces and EWR: Short Stories. Bruce’s wildlife photography has been published in Sports Afield, Fur-Fish-Game, Washington Wildlife, and others.

He loved to hike, camp, and fish throughout the Pacific Northwest, and in his lifetime, he went on over 275 backpacking trips. In 2011 he had a cabin built on Shaw Island in the San Juans, where he spent time with his family every year. Part of his legacy is a Trust for the cabin so his family can enjoy the wilderness in perpetuity.

Bruce loved to travel, and to make friends with people from many cultures (including his wife.) He enjoyed with equal gusto fancy dinners at Michelin stars restaurants in Spain and France, cafeteria food in Japan, smoked salmon in Alaska (living in a tent with grizzly bears watching across the river), asados in Argentina, whisky in Scotland, and beer in Prague. He had tremendous appreciation for the people and cultures that enriched his life. He passed on to his children a love of travel, taking them all over the world, and telling them stories from his many trips. He was always in awe of the beauty of the places and the relatability of the people he visited.

Bruce was generous with his money, his time, and his love. He wholeheartedly supported his children’s pursuit of the arts, travel, and education. He led a beautiful life that mattered to the many who loved him.

At Bruce’s request, there will not be a funeral. In lieu of flowers, please go see some live music, supporting local musicians in your area, as Bruce would have wanted.

We hope you think of him the next time you listen to the Blues, drink a Washington cabernet, hear a bad joke, or spend time in nature.

Siano is a founding member of The Habit comedy troupe and also helped create the bestselling “A Very Die Hard Christmas.” He will be on hand to serve drinks and cater to the firstclass ticket holders.

Performances begin Aug.10 at Green Lake’s Bathhouse Theater (7312 West Green Lake Dr N) and continue through Sept. 17.

Tickets range from limited $10 Stern Boarding Passes all the way up to exclusive $100 First Class Deck Chairs with drink service and can be purchased at SeattlePublicTheater. org.

wasn’t actually planning to run for city council this year but was unhappy with the lack of support for the tree canopy and felt compelled at the last minute. He believes that protecting the large existing trees is the best thing to protect the city environment. “It’s stressful and emotional. And you just don’t know until you do it,” he said. Lisbon counts several of the other candidates among his friends and said that Dan Strauss even delivered a vintage election sign to his yard.

KING COUNTY COUNCIL

Jeanne Kohl-Welles has represented King County Council District 4 since 2016 and decided not to seek reelection. This district encompasses a large part of the city, including Queen Anne, Magnolia, Belltown, Fremont, Ballard, Green Lake, Blue Ridge, and Bitter Lake. Jorge Barón, the retired director of Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, garnered over 50% of the vote and will face off against Assistant Attorney General Sarah Reyneveld in the general election. Also of note was Becka Johnson Poppe, King County’s current Budget & Policy Manager. She offered “sincere congratulations and appreciation to Jorge and Sarah for their dedication to our community” and said she will support the community taking on urgent issues like climate justice.

Reyneveld aims to share her vision for King County and increasing turnout for the general election. She says her campaign “will continue to be focused on regional solutions to address homelessness, improve public safety and behavioral health, and expand access to reliable public transit” and believes the turnout will be much higher for the general election. Her campaign appreciated all of the volunteers but was particularly touched by the support of Jim McDermott, Queen Anne resident and 14 term U.S. Congressman. McDermott said he was excited to

support Reyneveld because “she has all of the qualifications to make an excellent public servant” and agreed that it is imperative to encourage more people to vote. “A vote is the most important tool that an American has,” he said, “and if you don’t vote, I don’t think you are participating in democracy.”

Barón earned an impressive list of endorsements but remained focused on the voters that shared their hopes for King County and said, “It is an honor to be able to run for public office.”

SEATTLE SCHOOL BOARD

The Seattle School Board is made up of seven directors and oversees the largest school district in the state. Four of those positions are on the ballot this year and the other three will be up for election again in 2025. In the primary election, voters only vote for the candidate that resides in their zone of the city. And in the general election, all registered voters can vote for a candidate in each of the zones.

Queen Anne is in District 4 and is not on the ballot this year. Magnolia and Interbay were part of D4 in the last election but are now located in the newly redistricted District 2. But D2 incumbent Lisa Rivera Smith and former SPS

Principal Christina Posten are headed straight to the general because there were only two candidates in their race.

Gina Topp dominated the District 6 ballots with over 70% of the vote. Maryanne Wood, a mother and grandmother who says “NO to the planned school closures”, will also appear on the ballot. The third candidate was Rosie McCarter, a neurodivergent mom of three who had planned to uplift low-income families and students with disabilities.

District 3 includes the U District, Wallingford, Ravenna, Meridian, and had the most contested race. With no incumbent, it looked like Christie Robertson, Ben Gitenstein, and Evan Briggs would split the vote. Robertson

has a Ph.D. in neurobiology, a mind for numbers, and a passion for inclusive education, but did not make it through the primary. Gitenstein is a tech guy that is very unhappy with the current state of the district and Briggs is a filmmaker.

North Seattle residents in District 1 selected incumbent Liza Rankin and Debbie Carlson, out of the field of four. Both are moms with PTA experience, one wanting to continue the current direction of the district and one looking to “bring a new generation to the school board.”

Residents of Queen Anne and Magnolia are part of the state’s 36th legislative district. Anyone looking for more information or to get involved is welcome to contact the 36th District Democrats at 36th.org.

GENERAL ELECTION

The General election is Tuesday, Nov. 7; all ballots are due by 8 p.m. You can also check your registration or register to vote at voter.votewa.gov.
