VOL. 104, NO. 41

Submitted by Laura Marie Rivera Friday night was Seattle’s sendoff for a soccer legend. Megan Rapinoe has been dominating women’s soccer for the last ten years and OL Reign made her last regularly scheduled home game one to remember. Even though the game ultimately ended with a scoreless tie, the record-breaking crowd enjoyed an exciting evening. Before the game started, they dedicated the game to Rapinoe’s mother Diane and twin sister Rachael and played a tribute video that included some of the greatest names in sports: Billie Jean King, Abbie Wambach, and Magic Johnson. There were signs and posters throughout the stadium, and a billboard card stunt that spelled out THANK YOU MEGAN. The Reign City Riot band wore pink wigs and there were fans wearing #15 in every row. In addition to her career highlights of winning two World Cup championships and an Olympic Gold medal, Rapinoe also helped win equal pay for women’s soccer. She will be remembered for her accomplishments both on and off the field. #ForeverReign #ForeverRapinoe

candidates had Covid and one had to leave early. The remaining four candidates answered questions

from local leaders in the arts and a few members of the audience. D1 candidate Maren Costa is a designer turned tech worker that wants to solve problems for people, not big tech. Her opponent Rob Saka is a Delridge resident that wants to use his experience in

foster care to find a better way forward for the city. Daniel Pak, the singer and songwriter who is opening a new youth recording studio at King Street Station, asked the questions for these candidates. Gina Cavallo of Taproot Theatre brought the questions FORUM Page 3

Pursuing Women’s Economic Empowerment in a Destabilized World By Laura Marie Rivera Contributing Writer

Last week’s lunch and conversation at Northeastern University were sponsored by World Affairs Council and moderated by Queen Anne’s Jennifer Butte-Dahl, a senior director at APCO Impact who said, “Gender equality is not a side issue. It cannot be achieved if we do the work in silos.” The panel discussion made this clear. She continued, “It is critical and urgent because women and girls are central to every solution - on climate, on poverty, on pandemic preparedness, etc.” Panelist Greta Bull, the director of Women’s Economic Empowerment at The Gates Foundation, agreed saying, “Across the country and throughout the world, we consistently undervalue women’s work. That has to change.” Part

of her job is championing the acquisition and distribution of segregated data so that people can have a more accurate picture of the contributions and impact of women’s work worldwide. Kevin Cassidy of the International Labour Organization cited the fact that “If women were able to access the same opportunities as men, there would be a $28 trillion impact worldwide.”

They closed the talk by reminding the audience that every individual is encouraged to engage on this issue. Bull said, “Put your consumer dollars where they have more impact.” Cassidy said, “Find champions. Ask about your investments. If you own a business, you can make changes.” And Butte-Dahl said, “We all have a role to play.”

FORUM from Page 1 for D6 but Dan Strauss was the only candidate that came. He highlighted having offices in both downtown and Ballard so that he could connect with more people and stressed his history of leading cleanups without doing sweeps. He also remarked on the importance of improving transportation equitably. D7’s Andrew Lewis and Bob Kettle- both Queen Anne residents- were asked questions by a team including Anita Shah of ACT Theatre, Derek Baker from the Seattle Aquarium, and this reporter. Citing both the pluses and minuses of a district that includes the downtown area, Bob Kettle reminded the audience that “the arts are businesses too.” Andrew Lewis cited the city’s extensive efforts to clean up the downtown area and current partnerships to help bring an end to the region’s homelessness crisis. The bill is co-sponsored by County
