balloons due to the logistics [of launching so many balloons], and we had pilots waiting in line.”
From its humble beginnings in 1992, the Great Falls Balloon Festival has grown into one of the premier events in the LewistonAuburn area.
Balloonist Rick Jones started coming to the Festival in 1993. That year “they held it on the Auburn side of the river. They had us leave the field and then fly back over.”
“The idea came from Dan Valcourt, an Auburn fireman,” said Rachel Desgrosseiliers, executive director of Museum L-A. Valcourt attended an Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce meeting and suggested that the Twin Cities hold a balloon festival because of the favorable wind patterns over Lewiston and Auburn.
The first year of the festival, explained Jones, the balloonists all stayed in the dormitories at Central Maine Community C o l l e g e . Mon e y w a s t i g h t , a d d e d Desgrosseiliers. The men’s and women’s bathrooms were on alternating floors, but the balloonists were all mixed together. “People changed the signs as they needed,” said Jones, which led to a few interesting moments. “Now they get us a hotel.”
Degrosseiliers spent two years visiting FLIGHTS FROM THE PAST: The covers of the 1993, 1994, and 1995 Great Falls Balloon Festival guides. other festivals all around the northeast and in parts of Canada, researching all aspects of the festivals. She took the best of what she saw and liked, and came home to “made it happen” by putting their own money on the line. “The risk put together a business plan for a Twin Cities balloon festival. “If little Yarmouth can do it [with their success- we took was worth it,” she added. ful Clam Festival] why can’t L-A?” Desgrosseiliers especially liked During that first year, the festival brought in 30 balloons, with one how Yarmouth invited all nonprofits to participate as vendors. special-shape balloon called “Noah’s Ark.” The festival only drew Initially, the festival's board of directors consisted of seven about 30,000 people that first year. In the morning, explained community members, including Desgrosseiliers, Dr. John Reeder, Desgrosseiliers, we had “a few people standing around. The who also agreed to be “balloonmeister,” and others. Their budget second year, we had 50 balloons, and about 130,000 [attendees]; was $65,000, and when a major sponsor got cold feet, the seven it was mobbed! In recent years, Jones has brought “Footloose,” a solo “jet pack balloon” called a “Cloudhopper,” to the festival. He is bringing this exciting and unique balloon to L-A again this year. Bill Whidden, balloonist and owner of the “Great Balls of Fire” balloon, “can’t remember how long” he’s been a part of the Festival.

It’s been at least 12 to 15 years. Whidden lives in Florida and North Carolina, but “spends most of the summer in the northeast,” traveling with at least two of his balloons. Whidden loves coming to L-A. “It’s great to go to an area that has so much interest and where the people are so excited; it’s one of my favorite events!” He recalled, “One year, when the weather was perfect, the field was so crowded with people that we had to get people to move so we could set up.” "It's very cool,” said Jones, “to f ly out over such an incredibly excited population. It’s also cool how they handle the food, with nonprofits.”
In addition to a wonderful variety of food, entertainment has always been a big part of the festival. This year, explains Nick Knowlton, whose expertise makes him a good choice to handle the crazy logistics involved in providing entertainment at the Balloon Festival, “We have two stages and three days entertainment.” With several dozen acts, each between one and one-and-a-half hours long, that’s “a lot of entertainment and a lot of scheduling.” Highlights this year include many local acts, including L-A’s own, “Terry and the Telstars,” and “Jonathan Edwards will be the closer on Friday night on the Lewiston side.”
According to a survey conducted in 2011 by the Festival board of directors, the overall economic impact on the Lewiston-Auburn area was estimated at $2.3 million. Hamlyn noted, “Statistics show The first year there were about 20 food vendors, and all were that 63 percent of the spectators were from outside of L-A, and 12 nonprofits. Back then, said Desgrosseiliers, Pat Kosalka of percent were from out of state." Mechanics Savings Bank was the treasurer. The vendors would go straight to the bank after the festival with their earnings. The "People come from all over the place to attend this festival,” added Festival kept 15 percent, which went toward the Festival budget for Desgrosseiliers. the following year, and the nonprofit kept the rest. Desgrosseiliers remembered that wonderful first year when some of the nonprofits Desgrosseilier’s favorite Balloon Festival memory comes from “left with tears [of joy] in their eyes” because, for some, their the day her 81-year-old Dad climbed into the basket of a balloon. earnings “would fund their entire budget for the year to come.” He flew with Dr. Reeder, and “the glow and smiles on his face, the mixture of fear and anticipation, was priceless.” Mell Hamlyn is the current treasurer and sponsorship chair. This year, said Hamlyn, “There will be 34 nonprofit groups as [food] Although she is no longer actively “working” on the Balloon vendors, as well as 30-35 craft and trade vendors who pay a fee for a Festival, Desgrosseiliers attends every year. “I don’t miss it,” 10x10 booth.” she said. She enjoys seeing “the excitement of the people in the community, including the visitors. We have a beautiful Brother Richard and St. Martin de Porres, a shelter providing community,” she added, and there is a strong and palpable sense comfort and support for the homeless, have been vendors of pride and ownership. "The Great Falls Balloon Festival truly “since the beginning. As a nonprofit, we rely on donations and belongs to the community.” fundraising events. If the weather is good, we raise between $3,000-5,000 each year.” This year, he added, “We need a few more FROM OUR ARCHIVES: A 1996 poster volunteers, especially on Friday.” New to the Festival this year, the Liberty Festival will have a booth with tacos, taco salads, nachos and more. Cathy McDonald, who is now with the Liberty Festival, is a veteran of the Balloon Festival having worked in past years with St. Dominic Academy at their pancake breakfasts and chicken barbeques. This year, like St. Martin de Porres, McDonald and the Liberty Festival are “looking for volunteers. As a fundraiser, this event is very successful,” she added.

BALLOON FESTIVAL 11
Important Festival information
Pets: Pets are not allowed on festival grounds with the exception of service animals. Bikes, skates and boards: Because of the high level of foot traffic throughout the grounds, no bikes, scooters, roller skates or skateboards are allowed.
Balloon launches
Things to do
The best times for balloon launches are 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Times may vary depending on weather conditions. Moon glows (hot air balloons tethered and lit up with propane) will be displayed in the evening, following the 6 p.m. launch.
When the balloons aren’t overhead, there is still plenty to do: along the walkway around the edge of the festival grounds, craft and trade booths invite browsing, and a children’s area entertains everyone from toddlers to tweens. Live music can be enjoyed throughout the day and night at stages in both Lewiston and Auburn, from children’s shows and blues singers to jazz, pop, and oldies. A carnival, parade, and various demonstrations and contests round out the weekend events.
Cloudhoppers This year, the Festival will welcome cloudhoppers: one-person, experimental balloons. Look for them at each launch.
Things to eat
Alcohol: No alcohol is allowed on festival grounds.
Launches Please give the chase vehicles the right of way when they are entering and exiting a launch site or landing site. Be careful not to step on the fabric of the balloon envelope when the balloons are on the ground.
Chasing balloons
Scallops, lobster rolls, clam cakes, hamburgers, sausage sandwiches and so much more, all brought to you by nonprofit organizations. Meals under the big tent include dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings and breakfast throughout the weekend. Watch the launches while you enjoy a pancake or continental breakfast.
Chasing balloons can be an exciting way to participate in the Festival. Keep your focus on the road if you spot a balloon while driving. Pull off to the side of the road to watch the balloon safely. When following a balloon, be careful not to drive or walk onto private property without the landowner’s permission.

Balloon Festival sponsors over the years: Sponsors keep festival fun, free By Christina LeBlanc Feature Writer
development. “We are a part of the community and want to support the community any way we possibly can.”
“It’s a tremendous value for the money,” said Smaldon, who personally plans to take a ride in one of the balloons.
The Great Falls Balloon Festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary with this year’s festival, to be held August 17th through 19th. The festival, wh ich i ncludes hot a i r ba l loon lau nches, live music, food, cra f ts, a nd a ca rniva l, is generously sponsored by various businesses and organizations and hosted by the cities of Lew iston and Auburn. Some sponsors, like Dunkin’ Donuts, have sponsored the festival since its first year.
Gar y Hemenway, of Pay roll Management, a sponsor of several years, shares the sentiment. “I do it because it’s good for the community,” Hemenway said. The balloons are the main draw of the festival, and sponsors allow the festival to attract more balloons. Not only that, but the festival is an opportunity for schools and other nonprofit organizations to raise money for important causes via food sales. “All of the food vendors represent nonprofit organizations,” Hamlyn said.
Cash sponsors are not t he only supporters that make the festival possible. “The cities of Lewiston-Auburn are great in-kind sponsors as well,” Hamlyn said. “They both provide us with labor that is an integral part of our festival.” Such labor includes help from the Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and Health departments, as well as from the police and fire departments. All of these volunteers help the festival run smoothly and safely. Local print advertising is provided by the Sun Journal, Twin City Times, and Turner Publishing.
“When you get a couple hundred thousand people coming in,” said Hemenway, “it gives us a chance to raise some money for our favorite nonprofits, which helps the community &... it’s a lot of fun and it’s a great opportunity for fellowship.”
Sponsors are happy and proud to support the event. “The Balloon Festival is a great attraction for the L-A of the East,” said Hemenway. “It gives a lot of people an opportunity to see LewistonAuburn at its best.”
Sponsorship also allows businesses to get their names out there and in front of the thousands of locals and visitors who attend the yearly festival.

“The sponsors are very important to the festival, a nd we couldn’t have t he festiva l we have without them,” said Mell Hamlyn, the festival’s sponsorship chair. “It allows us to keep the festival at no cost to the festival-goers and allows us to bring in some top-notch entertainment.” Great Falls Insurance Co. is sponsoring the festiva l for t he f irst time t his yea r. “We’re relatively new and headquartered in Auburn,” sa id Keit h Sma ldon, d i rector of busi ness

BALLOON FESTIVAL 15
Jonathan Edwards set to perform at Festival The Great Falls Balloon Festival is proud to welcome Jonathan Edwards to the stage at Simard-Payne Memorial Park on Friday, August 17 at 9 p.m. Warm as summer sunshine, real as the truth, intimate as a long-overdue visit between old friends ... such is a Jonathan Edwards concert. Four decades into a stellar career of uncompromising musical integrity, the man simply delivers, night after night – songs of passion, songs of insight, songs of humor, all rendered in that pure and powerful tenor which, like fine wine, has only grown sweeter with age. This is one veteran performer who is neither grizzled nor nostalgic. These days Jonathan Edwards, a vital and relevant artist in today’s folk and Americana scenes, is most likely to be found on the road with longtime accompanist Stuart Schulman on bass, piano, fiddle, and vocals and Taylor Armerding, formerly of Northern Lights, on mandolin and high-tenor vocals.

Almost 40 years later, at show after show, the song continues to be embraced by faithful followers and new fans alike.
of children’s songs, which was honored with a National Library Association award. As for album #16, Edwards said, “Young people that are getting back to the land and trying to get off the power grid encourage me. My next studio album will ref lect some of those themes.” With that in mind, it’s no surprise that he closes each night’s show with these heartfelt lyrics:
Since 1971, Edwards has released 15 a lbums, including Blue Ridge, his standard-setting collaboration with bluegrass favorites t he Seldom Scene, and Little Hands, his collection

“I’ve been ... doing what I do best, which is playing live in front of people. I’ve been concentrating on that and loving it,” Edwards said.
