Black Mountain has got off to a great start this year thanks to a near perfect snow making window, along with the efforts from the Mountain staff who had everything ready to go for opening day. The Mountain opened with Alpine skiing, tubing and Nordic a week early with excellent conditions. This past summer, the t-bar was refurbished, allowing the Mountain to offer early skiing on more terrain. New this year is the Stone Wall Rental shop offering completely new rental equipment for three year olds to adults at very affordable prices. This new equipment is of high quality and offers skiers the ease of skiing on new shape ski designs. It is exciting to see new skiers take advantage of the new season rental plan. Reasonably priced rentals along with low lift ticket pricing allows the opportunity for affordable, healthy outdoor winter recreation. The Alpine Snow Kids Lesson programs will be starting in early January for skiing and riding. It is what Black Mountain is all about as we introduce new skiers to this life long sport. Black Mountain’s social committee has been busy again planning some really great evenings of fun so look for new upcoming events. With the high cost of travel this year, this may be the time to look in our own back yard for affordable winter fun for the whole family. Check out the happenings at Black Mountain at www.ski blackmountain.org. This year, Get back to Black and we will see you on the slopes.

Nordic Skiing For over 30 years Black Mountain of Maine has been acknowledged as one of the finest Nordic skiing facilities for recreation and competition in North America. Black Mountain’s trails were developed by Rumford’s Chummy Broomhall, a two-time Olympian, designer of the Lake Placid and Squaw Valley Olympic cross-country trails and Nordic snow grooming pioneer. Black Mountain of Maine has hosted many of today’s U.S. Olympic Team skiers as the site of the 2003 and 2004 Chevrolet U.S. Cross Country Championships, as well as many other noteworthy regional races. Black Mountain of Maine’s 17 kilometers of trails, with snowmaking on 4 kilometers, have something to offer for all abilities. Trails are groomed, whenever possible, for both skating and classic techniques. During competitions, the spectator bridge at the lodge provides a great vantage point to view, cheer, and take photos. Finally, we are often asked if people can snowshoe on our Nordic trails. We don’t just allow it...we encourage it!

Black Mountain kicked off its 2008 season with what many hope will become an annual event, the Rock Maple Racing Sno-X (pronounced snow cross) snowmobile races. This spectacular event, which included a qualifying round for the ESPN X-Games, drew around 2,000 spectators and over 350 entries, in spite of a huge earlyseason storm the second day of the event. The sleds screamed around a very technical course prepared by RMR, Black Mountain’s Operations Crew and a crack team of volunteers from the Chisholm Ski Club and the River Valley community. Competitors and spectators alike heralded the Black Mountain facility as the best they had experienced and said they look forward to returning. The CSC also seeks to preserve the great regional tradition of skiing and ski racing. All skiing enthusiasts are welcome as members of the Chisholm Ski Club. Presently, the club is made up of skiers, parents, former Chisholm Ski Club skiers and other people interested in supporting our mission. Annual dues are $10 per family. Black Mountain of Maine may appear to be small, but once you compare it to other ski areas, you’ll see that the only thing small about it is the amount you’ll pay to ski here! Our Alpine skiing and snowboarding area has a 1150-foot vertical drop, lit top-to-bottom for night skiing. The combined Upper and Lower Androscoggin trails make up a fabulous “solid blue” intermediate run, almost a mile long! In all, there are 20 trails, including a glade, with over 90% snowmaking coverage, served by two chair lifts. The Black Mountain of Maine Terrain Park features a 300-foot half pipe with 12-foot walls and a variety of other “hits.” The novice area’s “green” trails and the “Moose Run” beginner area (open on weekends, free of charge) are great places to learn and play. Maine Winter Sports Center The Maine Winter Sports Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, economic development corporation. Founded in April 1999, we operate with continued support from the Portland-based Libra Foundation. Our mission is to re-establish skiing as a lifestyle in Maine and leverage that lifestyle to create opportunity for rural, economically isolated communities of the state. We are also committed to addressing the devastating health issues facing our youth. Maine is at, or close to the top, of the country in the incidence of childhood smoking, obesity, type II diabetes and asthma. Our children are clearly not making good decisions about their health and are suffering the consequences. In fact, we believe that this is the single greatest issue facing our state in this generation. We are dedicated to reaching out to the children of Maine and getting them started on a healthy, active lifestyle early in life and then continue to offer programming that will keep them active for the rest of their lives. To bring our mission to life we have hired a world-class staff, built two world-class Nordic ski centers, dozens of community trail systems, acquired three community Alpine ski centers and with the support of passionate communities across our state, gotten thousands of Maine children on skis, in most cases, for the first time. In addition to Black Mountain of Maine, we own the 10th Mountain Center in Fort Kent, (the host of the 2004 World Cup Biathlon), the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle (home to the 2006 World Junior Biathlon Championships), and Big Rock Alpine Ski Area (the biggest ski area north of Bangor and, along with Black Mountain of Maine, one of the best skiing values in the state). In addition to these areas, we are affiliated with Pineland Farms Nordic Trails in New Gloucester as a program center.
The Chummy Broomhall Cup The Maine Winter Sports Center and Black Mountain of Maine announce the second annual Chummy Broomhall Cup, Maine’s Collegiate Nordic Ski Championships. “The Chummy Cup” will be held January 27 as part of the TD Banknorth Eastern Cup series and during the college Carnival season. The inaugural races saw over 500 skiers, including competitors from seven Maine colleges, vie for the Cup, a beautiful lead crystal trophy sponsored by TD Banknorth. Bates College took the honors in a close finish and this year promises to be equally exciting. “Maine colleges have a long and proud tradition of skiing,” said Andy Shepard. “We are hoping that this event will add to that tradition. We are also hoping this initiative will help give the most talented student/
athletes in the country another reason to look at colleges in Maine.” The competition, open to all Maine college ski teams and clubs, is named in honor of Rumford native, 10th Mountain Division veteran, two-time Olympian, Olympic course designer, Nordic trail maintenance innovator and the head of Rumford’s legendary Chisholm Ski Club, Wendall “Chummy” Broomhall. The schedule is as follows: • Sunday January 27, 11:30 a.m. Women 10km Freestyle, 1: 30 p.m. Men 15km Freestyle Among those participating in the championships will be
teams from the University of Maine campuses of Presque Isle, Fort Kent, Orono and Farmington, as well as Colby, Bates and Bowdoin colleges. The top three skiers from each college will be scored in both the men’s and women’s race, with the championship being awarded to the team having the highest overall score. The winning team will be able to display the Chummy Broomhall Cup at their campus for the following year. Online registration: www.nensa.net Results: www.chisholmskiclub.org
