bout the same time as this insert is delivered, a new chapter in Maine’s Nordic ski racing history will be written in Rumford. Maine Winter Sports Center President Andy Shepard announced November 3 the creation of the Chummy Broomhall Cup Maine Collegiate Ski Championship.

The inaugural races, where over 500 skiers are expected to participate, will be held in con-

junction with the NENSA TD Banknorth Eastern Cup/Tour de Rumford event on January 13 and 14, 2007 at Black Mountain of Maine. The two-day event is intended to bring all of Maine’s college Nordic ski teams together to compete for the Cup. “Maine colleges have a long and proud tradition of skiing,” said Shepard. “We are hoping that this event will add to that tradition. We are also hoping this initiative will help give the

most talented student/athletes in the country another reason to look at colleges in Maine.”

The competition, open to all Maine college ski teams, is named in honor of Rumford native, 10th Mountain Division veteran, two-time Olympian, Olympic course designer, Nordic trail maintenance innovator and the head of Rumford’s legendary Chisholm Ski Club, Wendall “Chummy” Broomhall.

Women 10km Classic, 1:30 p.m.

Men 15km Classic • Sunday January 14, 11:30 a.m.

Women 10km Freestyle, 1:30 p.m. Men 15km Freestyle • The Tour de Rumford event also includes a 1km Freestyle Prologue starting at 2 p.m. Friday January 12.

Among those participating in the championships will be teams from the University of Maine campuses of Presque Isle, Fort Kent, Orono and Farmington as well as Colby, Bates and Bowdoin colleges.

The top three skiers from each college will be scored in both the men’s and women’s races with the win being awarded to the team having the highest overall score for the two days. The winning team will be able to display the Chummy Broomhall Cup at their campus for the following year.

elcome to Black Mountain of Maine…Maine’s best winter family fun value!

Black Mountain of Maine is heralded by many as the premiere family winter sports facility in the state. It is our goal to provide the finest family winter sports experience possible. This begins with affordability. As an example, $20 still buys a full-day adult lift ticket…any time. Other tickets, rental equipment, food and beverages are similarly priced.

Our employees and volunteers are dedicated to making your time at Black Mountain of Maine exceptional in every respect. We also have a policy that anyone five and under or 75 and older skis free, and our Moose Run beginner area is always free.

How did we get where we are today? Black Mountain started in the early 1960s as the Chisholm Winter Park. This project was undertaken by the Chisholm Ski Club with a vision of creating the finest and most complete winter sports facility in the Northeast.

Although it started many traditions and provided the stage for numerous national-caliber events, the hopes and dreams for the facility were not attained in its first manifestation. In order to assure the survival of the mountain, the continuation of the project, and with the hope of moving the dreams closer to realization, the Chisholm Ski Club sold the Winter Park to the town of Rumford for one dollar in the early 1970s. With this transition, the name of the Winter Park was changed to Black Mountain, as the namesake of its geographic location.

The town of Rumford and the Greater Rumford Community Center continued providing a

wonderful environment for the residents of the River Valley to pursue their love of skiing, both for recreation and competition for over 30 years.

In 2002, Wendell “Chummy” Broomhall, a former Olympic Nordic skier, internationally recognized race organizer, authority on competitive Nordic ski trail design and the president of the Chisholm Ski Club, approached Andy Shepard and the Maine Winter Sports Center to help improve the Black Mountain facility. What Broomhall presented to the MWSC was evidence of a well-supported, well-used and well-loved family ski area that provided an integral and historic part of the River Valley area’s identity.

Andy Shepard and the Maine Winter Sports Center board of directors agreed with Broomhall’s proposition that Black Mountain deserved funding and purchased Black Mountain from the town of Rumford in 2003. In 2004, the MWSC embarked on an ambitious development program. Elements of this program harkened back to the dreams of the Chisholm Winter Park’s founders.

Funding provided by the Libra Foundation, the Maine Winter Sports Center, and with the help of countless volunteers from the Chisholm Ski Club and the community at large, the Alpine Ski area was expanded. The vertical drop was increased from 750 feet to 1150 feet, a novice trail



was added, chair lifts to serve the summit and the novice trail were installed, more trail lighting was provided and snowmaking capacity was increased.

All of these improvements were essential to Black Mountain’s continued success, but the crown jewel of the project was the new lodge. Designed to be far more than just a ski lodge, the new structure was intended to serve as a meeting place, social hub, museum and cultural center for the region. Its rugged, rustic interior provides a special, yet familiar environment with lots of open space for formal and informal gatherings of all types.

Anyone reading this, and indeed, anyone from the River Valley area or anyone who has ever visited Black Mountain has a stake in the heritage of Black Mountain of Maine. It is yours to enjoy and to become part of.

Realizing the dreams of the Chisholm Ski Club, to make Black Mountain of Maine the finest and most complete winter sports facility in the Northeast, is achievable and may, in many ways be closer than any of us imagine.

It is through the passion of the people, whether as guests, volunteers or employees, who have chosen to adopt Black Mountain of Maine, that this dream can, and will, become reality.

The Chisholm Ski Club is known widely as one of the finest ski competition organizing clubs anywhere. The Club, made up entirely of volunteers, hosts local, regional, state and national races. The club enthusiastically supports competitive skiing in the River Valley area and provides opportunities at the Black Mountain of Maine facili-

Maine Winter Sports Center The Maine Winter Sports Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, economic development corporation. Founded in April 1999 with a grant from the Portland-based Libra Foundation, our mission is to re-establish skiing as a lifestyle in Maine. We look to leverage that lifestyle to create opportunity for rural, economically isolated communities of the state.

We are also committed to addressing the devastating health issues facing our youth. Maine is at, or close to the top of the country in the incidence of childhood smoking, obesity, type II diabetes and asthma. Our children are clearly not making good decisions about their health and are suffering the consequences.

In fact, we believe that this is the single greatest issue facing our state in this generation. We are dedicated to reaching out to the children of Maine and getting them started on a healthy, active lifestyle early in life and then continue to offer programming that will keep them active for the rest of their lives.

To bring our mission to life we have hired a world-class staff, built two world-class Nordic ski centers, more than a dozen community trail systems, acquired three community alpine ski centers and with the support of passionate communities across our state, gotten thousands of Maine children on skis, in most cases, for the first time.

In addition to Black Mountain of Maine, we own the 10th Mountain Center in Fort Kent, (the host of the 2004 World Cup Biathlon), the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle (home to the 2006 World Junior Biathlon Championships), and Big Rock Alpine Ski Area (the biggest ski area north of Bangor and, along with Black Mountain of Maine, one of the best skiing values in the state). In addition to these areas, we are affiliated with Pineland Farms Nordic Trails in New Gloucester as a program center.

people interested in supporting our mission. Annual dues are $10 per family. Skiers are expected to compete as a member of the Chisholm Ski Club in all competitions other than school events and non-skiing members are expected to volunteer for at least three club events throughout the season.

Alpine Snow Kids program: Black Mountain of Maine, with the University of Maine at Farmington’s Ski Industries Program, is excited to offer the very affordable, season-long Alpine Snow Kids lesson program for skiers of all abilities ages to 12. Children in the Alpine Snow Kids program will be offered ski or snowboard lessons for nine weeks, on Saturdays and Sundays, 9:30-11:30 a.m., January 6 and running until March 4.

The price for these lessons (18 lessons, approximately 36 hours of instructional time) is $200, including lift tickets. While the price of lift tickets is included in the Alpine Snow Kids program, the price of rental equipment is not included. Daily and season-long rentals are available from Black Mountain of Maine’s sponsoring partner, Ski Depot, as well as other area ski shops.

Alpine Snow Kids was designed by Leigh Breidenbach, director of UMF Ski Industries Program in 2000 to help smaller ski areas attract the youngest members of the skiing community.

Alpine Snow Kids, UMF has created a program specifically tailored to Black Mountain of Maine.

The Mountain’s instructors will be assisted by UMF Ski Industries student teachers and overseen by the UMF Ski Industries faculty.

Black Mountain Snow Riders program. New to both Black Mountain of Maine and UMF, this snowboarding school will run lessons for snowboarders of all ages on Friday afternoons from 3:30-5 p.m. These lessons will run from January 12 until March 9.

Kinderschuss! ski lessons for 3 to 6 year olds: Kinderschuss! lessons, specifically catering to first time skiers 3 to 6 years of age, will be held Sunday mornings, January 7 through March 4. These private lessons can be either a half hour or full hour in length. Kinderschuss! lessons are $15 per student for a half-hour and $25 per student for a full hour. Kinderschuss! lessons are a great way to start young skiers on their way to enjoying one of the word’s greatest sports.

Chisholm Ski Club Junior Alpine Race Development Program: Black Mountain of Maine, the Chisholm Ski Club and the University of Maine at Farmington Ski Industries Program are teaming up to offer a junior Alpine race development program for J3, J4 and J5 level racers, ages 9 to 14.

The Chisholm Ski Club Alpine program will offer midweek and weekend training opportunities.

Midweek training will be Wednesday nights from 3-6 p.m. and Friday nights from 3-6 or 7 p.m. (as operating hours permit). The weekend training day schedule will be from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

A range of training options is available, from weekends only, to midweek and weekends, or the elite program (for experienced ski racers) to include physical training and testing. All athletes in the program must

There will be a three-day February vacation camp. The program will end with the closing of Black Mountain except for those qualified for post season regional events. The Chisholm Ski Club also offers financial support to club members in good standing who qualify for championship events.

Ron Bonnevie, head of Coaches’ education for UMF, has over 25 years of ski coaching experience and holds a master’s degree in physical education. His credentials include: USSA International certification, PSIA certification, FIS Technical Delegate certification, and 15 years as a USSA Coaches’ education coordinator and examiner. He has experience working with skiers of all ages and abilities, ranging from beginners to world cup athletes. Assisting Bonnevie are UMF Ski Industries Program interns and members of the UMF Ski Team.

Kinderschuss! ski lessons for 3 to 6 year olds: Kinderschuss! lessons, specifically catering to first time skiers 3 to 6 years of age, will be held Sunday mornings, January 7 through March 4. These private lessons can be either a half hour or full hour in length. Kinderschuss! lessons are $15 per student for a half-hour and $25 per student for a full hour. Kinderschuss! lessons are a great way to start young skiers on their way to enjoying one of the word’s greatest sports.

Chisholm Ski Club Junior Alpine Race Development Program: Black Mountain of Maine, the Chisholm Ski Club and the University of Maine at Farmington Ski Industries Program are teaming up to offer a junior Alpine race development program for J3, J4 and J5 level racers, ages 9 to 14.

The Chisholm Ski Club Alpine program will offer midweek and weekend training opportunities.

Midweek training will be Wednesday nights from 3-6 p.m. and Friday nights from 3-6 or 7 p.m. (as operating hours permit). The weekend training day schedule will be from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

A range of training options is available, from weekends only, to midweek and weekends, or the elite program (for experienced ski racers) to include physical training and testing. All athletes in the program must

Daily public and private lessons: Along with the Alpine Snow Kids and Kinderschuss! lessons, daily group ($20 per 11⁄2 hr session) and private lessons ($30 per 1 hr session) for both skiing and snowboarding are also offered.

purchase a Black Mountain season pass, in addition to the program fees.

The program will begin when Black Mountain opens.

There will be a three-day February vacation camp. The program will end with the closing of Black Mountain except for those qualified for post season regional events. The Chisholm Ski Club also offers financial support to club members in good standing who qualify for championship events.

Ron Bonnevie, head of Coaches’ education for UMF, has over 25 years of ski coaching experience and holds a master’s degree in physical education. His credentials include: USSA International certification, PSIA certification, FIS Technical Delegate certification, and 15 years as a USSA Coaches’ education coordinator and examiner. He has experience working with skiers of all ages and abilities, ranging from beginners to world cup athletes. Assisting Bonnevie are UMF Ski Industries Program interns and members of the UMF Ski Team.

elcome to Black Mountain of Maine…Maine’s best winter family fun value!

Black Mountain of Maine is heralded by many as the premiere family winter sports facility in the state. It is our goal to provide the finest family winter sports experience possible. This begins with affordability. As an example, $20 still buys a full-day adult lift ticket…any time. Other tickets, rental equipment, food and beverages are similarly priced.

Our employees and volunteers are dedicated to making your time at Black Mountain of Maine exceptional in every respect. We also have a policy that anyone five and under or 75 and older skis free, and our Moose Run beginner area is always free.

How did we get where we are today? Black Mountain started in the early 1960s as the Chisholm Winter Park. This project was undertaken by the Chisholm Ski Club with a vision of creating the finest and most complete winter sports facility in the Northeast.

Although it started many traditions and provided the stage for numerous national-caliber events, the hopes and dreams for the facility were not attained in its first manifestation. In order to assure the survival of the mountain, the continuation of the project, and with the hope of moving the dreams closer to realization, the Chisholm Ski Club sold the Winter Park to the town of Rumford for one dollar in the early 1970s. With this transition, the name of the Winter Park was changed to Black Mountain, as the namesake of its geographic location.

The town of Rumford and the Greater Rumford Community Center continued providing a

wonderful environment for the residents of the River Valley to pursue their love of skiing, both for recreation and competition for over 30 years.

In 2002, Wendell “Chummy” Broomhall, a former Olympic Nordic skier, internationally recognized race organizer, authority on competitive Nordic ski trail design and the president of the Chisholm Ski Club, approached Andy Shepard and the Maine Winter Sports Center to help improve the Black Mountain facility. What Broomhall presented to the MWSC was evidence of a well-supported, well-used and well-loved family ski area that provided an integral and historic part of the River Valley area’s identity.

Andy Shepard and the Maine Winter Sports Center board of directors agreed with Broomhall’s proposition that Black Mountain deserved funding and purchased Black Mountain from the town of Rumford in 2003. In 2004, the MWSC embarked on an ambitious development program. Elements of this program harkened back to the dreams of the Chisholm Winter Park’s founders.

Funding provided by the Libra Foundation, the Maine Winter Sports Center, and with the help of countless volunteers from the Chisholm Ski Club and the community at large, the Alpine Ski area was expanded. The vertical drop was increased from 750 feet to 1150 feet, a novice trail



was added, chair lifts to serve the summit and the novice trail were installed, more trail lighting was provided and snowmaking capacity was increased.

All of these improvements were essential to Black Mountain’s continued success, but the crown jewel of the project was the new lodge. Designed to be far more than just a ski lodge, the new structure was intended to serve as a meeting place, social hub, museum and cultural center for the region. Its rugged, rustic interior provides a special, yet familiar environment with lots of open space for formal and informal gatherings of all types.

Anyone reading this, and indeed, anyone from the River Valley area or anyone who has ever visited Black Mountain has a stake in the heritage of Black Mountain of Maine. It is yours to enjoy and to become part of.

Realizing the dreams of the Chisholm Ski Club, to make Black Mountain of Maine the finest and most complete winter sports facility in the Northeast, is achievable and may, in many ways be closer than any of us imagine.

It is through the passion of the people, whether as guests, volunteers or employees, who have chosen to adopt Black Mountain of Maine, that this dream can, and will, become reality.

Maine Winter Sports Center The Maine Winter Sports Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, economic development corporation. Founded in April 1999 with a grant from the Portland-based Libra Foundation, our mission is to re-establish skiing as a lifestyle in Maine. We look to leverage that lifestyle to create opportunity for rural, economically isolated communities of the state.

We are also committed to addressing the devastating health issues facing our youth. Maine is at, or close to the top of the country in the incidence of childhood smoking, obesity, type II diabetes and asthma. Our children are clearly not making good decisions about their health and are suffering the consequences.

In fact, we believe that this is the single greatest issue facing our state in this generation. We are dedicated to reaching out to the children of Maine and getting them started on a healthy, active lifestyle early in life and then continue to offer programming that will keep them active for the rest of their lives.

To bring our mission to life we have hired a world-class staff, built two world-class Nordic ski centers, more than a dozen community trail systems, acquired three community alpine ski centers and with the support of passionate communities across our state, gotten thousands of Maine children on skis, in most cases, for the first time.

In addition to Black Mountain of Maine, we own the 10th Mountain Center in Fort Kent, (the host of the 2004 World Cup Biathlon), the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle (home to the 2006 World Junior Biathlon Championships), and Big Rock Alpine Ski Area (the biggest ski area north of Bangor and, along with Black Mountain of Maine, one of the best skiing values in the state). In addition to these areas, we are affiliated with Pineland Farms Nordic Trails in New Gloucester as a program center.

people interested in supporting our mission. Annual dues are $10 per family. Skiers are expected to compete as a member of the Chisholm Ski Club in all competitions other than school events and non-skiing members are expected to volunteer for at least three club events throughout the season.

A

bout the same time as this insert is delivered, a new chapter in Maine’s Nordic ski racing history will be written in Rumford. Maine Winter Sports Center President Andy Shepard announced November 3 the creation of the Chummy Broomhall Cup Maine Collegiate Ski Championship.

The inaugural races, where over 500 skiers are expected to participate, will be held in con-

junction with the NENSA TD Banknorth Eastern Cup/Tour de Rumford event on January 13 and 14, 2007 at Black Mountain of Maine. The two-day event is intended to bring all of Maine’s college Nordic ski teams together to compete for the Cup. “Maine colleges have a long and proud tradition of skiing,” said Shepard. “We are hoping that this event will add to that tradition. We are also hoping this initiative will help give the

most talented student/athletes in the country another reason to look at colleges in Maine.”

The competition, open to all Maine college ski teams, is named in honor of Rumford native, 10th Mountain Division veteran, two-time Olympian, Olympic course designer, Nordic trail maintenance innovator and the head of Rumford’s legendary Chisholm Ski Club, Wendall “Chummy” Broomhall.

The top three skiers from each college will be scored in both the men’s and women’s races with the win being awarded to the team having the highest overall score for the two days. The winning team will be able to display the Chummy Broomhall Cup at their campus for the following year.
