BLACK MOUNTAIN OF MAINE 2004
HOURS OF OPERATION
WELCOME TO THE NEW, BUT STILL HISTORIC BLACK MOUNTAIN
he people of the River Valley will be quite surprised at their next visit to Black Mountain of Maine. A new paved parking lot, a 12,000 square foot base lodge that includes 2 fireplaces, and a new triple chairlift that adds 680 feet of vertical to the mountain are just a few of the additions. The changes are part of the Maine Winter Sports Center’s commitment to providing the community with a venue that will meet the needs of the skiing community in the River Valley. As you experience the new mountain, there should be a tremendous sense of pride in what is possible in Maine when a community comes together with a common purpose and a lot of energy. Although the project was made possible by a grant from the Portland based Libra Foundation, the finished product represents over 5,000 hours of volunteer labor. You will also see a concerted emphasis on programming that will reach out to the communities of the River Valley and help bring back the skiing lifestyle — a lifestyle that has helped communities like Rumford produce more winter Olympians than any other town in Maine. Whether you have never skied before, or haven’t skied in years, you will find it easy to get on the slopes — there is truly something for everyone at Black Mountain of Maine. For those interested in being a part of this magical experience please contact Terrie Anne Bennett at tabennett@megalink.net or Jolene Lovejoy at lovejoy@megalink.net.

Black Mountain Ski Resort became the first ski area in the nation to go tobacco-free on Sept. 1, 2004. Policy writers were Sarah Coolidge, coordinator for Project NOW and Terrie-Anne Bennett, general manager of the ski area owned by Maine Winter Sports Center.
Everyone in the River Valley should have the opportunity to ski. Black Mountain of Maine will have a scholarship program for season passes for the 2005 ski season. To make this possible, Black Mountain and the community are pulling resources together to make sure every child who needs a season pass, yet cannot afford one, does not get left out. Fundraising and volunteerism top the list of successful goals at Black Mountain of Maine
I
n 2003, Black Mountain officially became Black Mountain of Maine, under the new ownership of the Maine Winter Sports Center. What a giant step for everyone involved with the mountain. Dreams began to materialize with the installation of the Novice Lift for the start of the 2003 Ski Season. Volunteerism and fundraising had always played a major part with the operation of Black Mountain. With the purchase of the mountain by the Maine Winter Sports Center, both groups became more focused on the future of the mountain and what lay ahead. Fundraising was first on the table and letters were mailed to current as well as former residents of the River Valley area. The response was resounding from both far and near. Lodge tables and chairs for the lifts have been purchased in the names of loved ones, towers have been installed and will soon be officially dedicated to local businesses. All donations will be acknowledged with official plaques in the new lodge building. Along with the financial donations, we have always been blessed with individuals, as well as groups, working at the mountain as volunteers. The Chisholm Ski Club is a perfect example of the local folks that have kept the mountain alive
all these years. Mead Westvaco, our local paper company, as well as many other general contractors have long supported the mountain in both time and materials. We relied heavily on those same supporters to work closely with us as we put on our first Black Mountain of Maine Golf Tournament — once again a successful community effort for fundraising. Team sponsors, tee sponsors, cart sponsors, gift contributors, lunch sponsor, able volunteers, as well as our major sponsor Mead Westvaco joined together to make this event not only memorable to all that played golf that day but allowed us to reach our fundraising goal! Thank you one and all for assisting in this successful fundraising event! Some may wonder why so much local fundraising is necessary? Community involvement is high on the criteria of the Maine Winter Sports Center, as well as promoting the local economy, promoting healthy lifestyles with volunteer support, keeping local businesses connected to their projects and at the same time continuing to keep skiing affordable for the members of this community. No matter what your time allocation may be, or the amount of your financial donation, Black Mountain of Maine and the youngsters that ski there, will al-

ways be indebted to you – the folks that make it happen here at Black Mountain of Maine. 2004 has been a banner year for everyone involved with Black Mountain of Maine. We have watched, with great anticipation, this past summer, as the new quad chair lift was purchased and is now in the process of being installed. We have eagerly watched both the new Ski Lodge being constructed, as well as the new garage, and we eagerly anticipate the parking lot being paved this month. The Publicity and Fundraising Committee would like to thank all of you wonderful people for your support these past two years. Our wildest dreams have come true — it’s because of Maine Winter Sports Center and the involvement of folks like you. We are always looking for ways to involve people that share the common interest of making this valley a better place to live, work, and recreate. The youth of this community is upper most in our deeds – we strive to keep activities affordable, but it’s all up to you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts…..You can and do make it happen! —

Lewiston, Maine, Saturday, November 20, 2004
aving been born and raised in Rumford, I have been associated with Black Mountain of Maine since its inception. I skied here the first day it was open in 1960, have raced, coached, given lessons, groomed and managed since then. What is happening at Black Mountain is truly an amazing undertaking. This has been hoped and prayed for, for years, and now it is closing in on reality. The new vertical is 1,150 feet, we’ll have a new chair lift, new trails cut, a new base lodge and parking lot. This excites me in the biggest of ways. Being a part of this expansion and seeing it through, is something that most folks would never go through in a lifetime. This mountain has been such a major part of my life and my family’s — and now these improvements will create a lifetime experience for many, many people in the River Valley and beyond.

The skiing history of the Valley to be told in Base Lodge

Operating Board

fter nearly two years of planning for the new Black Mountain, construction is nearing completion. A new triple chairlift to the summit, new base lodge, paved parking lot, new maintenance garage and the conversion of the old base lodge to a wax building and spill over seating will greet everyone when the snow flies. This is a dream come true for many and is something the entire community can be proud of. I have never been involved with a project that has had only positive comments from the entire Community and the Ten River Valley Communities. Thanks to the Town of Rumford and other communities, The Maine Winter Sports Center recognized the area’s deep support and rich skiing history and heavily invested in the expansion taking place at Black Mountain. We are recreating the new Black Mountain for generations to come. New programs and affordable big mountain skiing will provide healthy recreation for everyone for years to come. I would like to thank the Operating Board for all of their hours of planning and to all of the businesses, volunteers and contractors who have contributed to the success of this great project. Sincerely,
Roger Arsenault

The history of the River Valley is rich with skiing tradition. The Chisholm Ski Club of Rumford and the Pineland Ski Club of Andover were among the earliest in the northeast and created a robust interest in the new sport. Then there were the Winter Carnivals that drew thousands of spectators and some of the top ski jumpers from around the country to the area and helped produce more winter Olympians that any other community in Maine. There are also the stories about the national ski industry leaders from the Valley, to the ski champions, and the incomparable volunteers. The Maine Winter Sports Center is committed to increasing awareness in each community for their role in the rich ski history of the State and the River Valley has more of a story to tell than most. THE CHISHOLM SKI CLUB
he Chisholm Ski Club has a rich tradition which dates back to the early days of the 20th century at its Spruce Street location and its mid 1900’s days at Scottie’s Mountain. Over the years the Club has hosted several world class Nordic skiing events at Black Mountain of Maine. This past January Chisholm hosted another record field in the 2004 Chevrolet US Cross Country Championships. The Chisholm Ski Club enthusiastically supports competitive skiing in the greater Rumford area. We support the River Valley by providing opportunities for its youth by cooperating with and enhancing Black Mountain’s efforts and by providing an economic boost to the area’s restaurants and motels. We also seek to preserve the great local tradition of skiing and ski racing. The Chisholm Ski Club exists to support the youth and school programs in the greater Rumford area. It still has one of the best volunteer corps in the country with its “loyal body of members” just as the Club had when it began back in the ‘20’s.

onstruction on the new summit lift, base lodge, paved parking lot began this spring thanks to a grant from the Portland based Libra Foundation. Black Mountain of Maine was awarded a major grant from the Libra Foundation to fund the installation of a lift to the summit of the mountain, a base lodge, a paved parking lot and a wax facility. The result will be a mountain that has grown from 470 vertical feet to over 1,100 vertical feet. It will also mean a major boost in the Maine Winter Sports Center’s efforts to re-establishing a skiing lifestyle in the area. Forty-five years ago, Black Mountain of Maine was founded in Rumford under the ownership of the Chisholm Ski Club. Its goal was to provide skiing for the area communities. The mountain was built totally with volunteer support from its members and area businesses. Over the following 45 years the high costs of maintaining an alpine ski area and the financial limitations of a small ski area always kept the community from being able to bring the dreams of the community to life. “Today Black Mountain will embark on an expansion that has been dreamed about for all the years of its existence.” said Roger Arsenault, President of the Black Mountain Board. “We are thankful for the vision of the Maine Winter Sports Center and the incredible support of the Libra Foundation. Without them this would still be just a dream.” The installation of a new chairlift, a new novice area and the addition of a new triple chairlift to the summit will bring the area a new big mountain skiing experience at affordable family prices. The new base lodge is being designed to replace the existing facility that has served the mountain well all these years. The plan is for a facility with expanded seating capacity, fully ADA compliant, full skier services with expanded rentals and retail offerings. The new Snack Bar will be able to handle larger crowds with more items to include healthy choices, in keeping with the Maine Winter Sports Center mission of a healthy lifestyle. “The vision is for a very comfortable building we can all be proud of,” said Arsenault. Black Mountain of Maine already has a world class cross country venue that has hosted the US National Cross Country Ski Championships in the past. The parking lot and new lodge placement will allow major cross country events to happen without negatively affecting the alpine skiing experience. A paved parking lot will also create a much more enjoyable experience at the mountain.

fter nearly two years of planning for the new Black Mountain, construction is nearing completion.

aving been born and raised in Rumford, I have been associated with Black Mountain of Maine since its inception.

Black Mountain of Maine wants to thank the following businesses and individuals for supporting...

Skiing & Snowboarding
PSIA Ski School and AASI Snowboard School Lessons. Our skiing programs will get you moving in the right direction: downhill, under control and feeling good. It doesn’t matter what age or ability level you are, we’ll teach you to handle everything from beginner basics to mastering moguls. Emphasis is on safety, fun and learning. Groups are arranged according to age and ability.
Private Lessons
Adults & Groups Nordic, Alpine, Snowboard
The best equation for success is to take a “one-on-one” lesson with a Black Mountain professional; or take a “semi-private” with family and friends. Either way, you’ll enjoy personalized instruction at your own pace. Choose your time and the skills you want to work on, and we’ll group you with the right instructor. Remember that even advanced skiers and riders can benefit from a private lesson! Private lessons are available on the hour during hours of operation. Please call to set up a time or come by the ski school desk to reserve your lesson.
