The annual awards program of the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce is the largest single celebration of excellence in our communities. The event is a total sellout with Chamber members and others joining to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of award winners. At the height of awards season in the country each year, the Chamber recognizes those whose contributions to the quality of life in our communities in the past year were among the particularly notable.
Public Service Leader Phil Crowell, will be honored with the 2012 Public Service Leadership Awa rd. Once k now n to school kids in Auburn simply as Officer Friendly, Crowell rose t hrough the ranks of the Auburn Police Department to become its chief. While serving as chief, Crowell was also tapped to function as assistant city manager and as acting city manager, while maintaining the effectiveness and integrity of the police department and ensuring
t hat it cont i nued to ser ve t he interests of the citizens of Auburn. Throughout, Chief Crowell has earned the continuing respect of his department, of a succession of elected officials, municipal officials, law enforcement officials statew ide, and the deep appreciation of the people of Auburn.
Small Business Advocate Established in 2004, t he Sma ll Busi ness Advocate Awa rd was named in honor of the late Ken Add iton, a long-t i me ba n ker a nd communit y advocate who provided vital counsel to scores of small businesses that have become part of the fabric of the community. The award is conferred to those who best embody the spirit with which Additon was infused. A great friend to the Chamber, the sma ll business communit y, his clients and legions of persona l friends, all past recipients of this award have cited Additon’s inspiration as the source of their own motivation. The 2012 award will be presented to the Lewiston Career Center, which provides local busi-
nesses w it h f ree employ ment recruitment, hiring, and training, as well as helping individuals achieve productive positions in the community.

Scott Riccio, owner of Northeast Charter & Tour in Lewiston, has invested $1 million in three new fuel-friendly buses: one smaller one is a hybrid and the two larger buses have special transmissions. Ba xter Brew ing Co., recent ly recognized by the beverage industry as “the 2011 best new brewery in the U.S.” is the recipient of the Business Leadership Award for a smaller company. The only brewery in New England to package all its beers in either kegs or aluminum cans, the startup was compelled to double its production in its first quarter of operation. The tasting room, open for tours Thursdays through Sundays, has attracted visitors from 46 states and 25 foreign countries. Baxter beer is distributed to more than 1,000 retailers, bars and restaurants throughout Maine, and the Boston/North Shore areas of Massachusetts, with expansion to the rest of Massachusetts starting now. Two Communit y Ser v ice Leadership Awards will be presented this year. The L/A CA$H Coalition is a group of community partners who annually promote the Earned Income Tax Credit, a federal credit f o r l o w-t o -m o d e r a t e -i n c o m e workers. The EITC is touted as the federal government’s largest antipoverty initiative. T h e C o a l it ion pr o v id e s f r e e preparation and e-filing of federal and state returns by IRS-certified volunteers, and provides free tax preparation at the Lewiston MultiPurpose Center and Auburn City Ha ll. Since 2004, t he Coa lition has facilitated the return of over $13 million in tax refunds to the p o c k e t s of low-t o -mo de r a t e i ncome workers w it h i n t he Lewiston-Auburn area, a boost to the local economy.
