Edward Little High School ELHS BOYS’ SOCCER Coach: Dave Morin (31st year) Last year’s record: 8-4-3, lost in Eastern A quarterfinal Returning letter winners: Seniors —Jon Delorme (FB), Cam Ivers (FB), James Jackson (FB), Tim Mains (MF/ SK), Taka Ranucci (SK), Ken Romero (FB); Juniors — Nate Blais (MF), Jared Pelletier (SK), Ian Therriault (MF), Adam Timberlake (MF); Sophomore — Zack Tannenbaum (MF). Key losses: Branden Lever (MF), Steven Giorgetti (FB), Jeremy Theriault (FB), Clark Chamberlain (FB), Austin Polisky (MF), Dexter Forbes (FB); Tim Brodsky (MF), Tom Lynch (FB), Tyler Shennett (MF). Promising newcomers: Senior — Justin Forbes (MF); Juniors — Ben Bowles (G), Jeremy Hamm (G), Taylor Ramich (FB), Ethan Polisky (FB), Brandon Cote (MF), Richard Grondin (MF), Nigel Bowles (MF); Sophomores — Corey Morin (FB), Connor Harris (MF), Nickolas Cote (SK); Freshmen — Brady Pleau (SK), Michael Cote (G). Outlook: The Red Eddies lost a ton of talent on the defensive end, where EL is typically strongest. It will take some time for players to adjust to new roles but with 11 players back, EL should fill the holes and remain competitive in the KVAC. Coach’s comment: “We’re rebuilding our defense from the goal on out. There are several positions that players are competing for during preseason, which should provide a challenging at m o sp h e r e t h at h o p e f u l l y develops some mental toughness. Getting healthy and developing

some depth will be key to our success.” — Coach Dave Morin

ELHS FIELD HOCKEY Coach: Greg Perkins (20th year) Last year’s record: 5-8-1 (Lost in Class A quarterfinal) Returning players: Seniors — Ashley Butler, Marie DufresneDixon, Maranda Parent, Emily Ranucci, Bri Robbins, Miranda Martin; Juniors — Tori Couture, Gabby Laperriere, Kayla Nadeau, Jordan Tate, Maddie Williamson. Key losses: Christine Bilodeau, Jess Campbell, Kayla Cummings, Sam Dean, Katherine Harmon, Brit Tardif, Hilary Tate, Katie Williamson. Promising newcomers: Senior — Eileen McKinney; Juniors — Courtney Pelletier, Danielle Demers; Sophomores — Amanda W illiams, Hannah Johns ton, Samantha Goulette. Outlook: Edward Little lost eight starters to graduation from a solid team. The Eddies traditionally have depth, and that will be a key this season as they look to replace half of last year’s varsity squad. If the younger players learned well from the outgoing players, the Eddies will be in the playoff discussion again. Coach’s comment: ”We are working hard on becoming a playoff team. The KVAC is always a very competitive league, and I expect it to be again this year.” — Coach Greg Perkins

ELHS FOOTBALL Coach: Dave Sterling (first year) Last year’s record: 1-7 Returning players: Seniors — Teven Colon (TB/FS), Josh Delong (QB), Cory Spruill (FB/NG), Avery Jackson (T/DT), Ben Bellevue (G/DE), Cody Meserve (C/DT), Alex Smith (G/LB), Zach Earle (T/DE), Spencer Emerson (Slot/LB), Zach Leblond (TE/SS), Ken Treadwell (SE/CB); Junior — Luc Farrago (FB/LB). Key losses: Branson Vye (TB/LB), Wade Colon (G/DT). Promising newcomers: N/A. Outlook: It’s been a turbulent 12 months for the Red Eddies, with three head coaches presiding during that time. The hope is Sterling, a former EL assistant returning via a head-coaching stint at Scarborough, and a senior-laden roster can instill stability and get back to the PTC playoffs. Colon, who played QB last year, is a shifty playmaker capable of breaking long runs. The Eddies will try to spread opponents out and use a physical offensive line to open running lanes for him. Coach’s comment: “One of the blessings we have in our program is a very big senior class of about 20 guys.” — Coach Dave Sterling

ELHS GOLF Coach: Richard Dahlquist (fourth year) Last year’s record: 2-7 Returning players: Seniors — Cody Russell, Brian Bickford; Juniors — Nate Corliss, Travis Landry. Key losses: None given. Promising newcomers: Freshmen — Nate Puchard, Cooper Easter, Brandon Dubuc. Outlook: The Eddies return a

good group of players and should improve upon last year’s finish. The top of the lineup is solid, with Russell and Bickford. The team won’t likely be the best team in the conference, but there will be some wins along the way this season. Coach’s comment: ”I think we’re a team to contend with. We won’t beat everyone, but we can beat some of them.” — Coach Richard Dahlquist

ELHS GIRLS’ SOCCER Coach: Craig Latuscha (first year) Last year’s record: 6-7-2, lost in Eastern A quarterfinal Returning letter winners: Seniors —Emily Grund (MF), Frankie Lally (FB/SK), Laurent Bennett (MF), Kelsey Letourneau (FB); Juniors — Emily Hartnett (MF/SK), Marykate Masters (FB/MF), Kelly Philbrook (FB), Jaclyn Masters (MF/SK), Phoebe Chamberlain (FB), Melissa Paione (FB); Sophomores — Kate Sawyer (MF), Lexis Clavet (MF). Key losses: Kirsten Prue (G), Hanna Mogensen (MF), Katie St. Hilaire (MF), Lindsey Rogers (FB), Deanna Morency (FB), Hillary Turcotte (MF), Jessica Nyholm (FB). Promising newcomers: Junior — Magna Heir (MF); Sophomores — Abby Bellefleur (MF), Allairie Lever (MF), Ashley Arnold (G); Freshmen — Kory Norcross (SK), Brittney Myrick (FB), Rebeka Able (SK/FB), Taylor Landry (G). Outlook: Latuscha takes over the girls’ program after coaching the boys’ JV squad. EL lost an all-star keeper in Prue and experience in the midfield and defense. There are still 12 players back, many of which saw time last year. The midfield and defense has experience, but replacing Prue in goal will be a challenge. New players will help try to bring a balanced attack up front.

Coach’s comment: “A solid core of student athletes return after playing several games together throughout the summer. Our ultimate goal is to be competitive with all teams throughout the conference and to improve as a team throughout the regular season.” — Coach Craig Latuscha

ELHS CROSS COUNTRY Coach: Ralph Fletcher (first year) Returning letter winners: Boys: Seniors —Faisal Noor, Hussein Mohamed; Sophomore — Nate Mulligan; Girls: Seniors — Abby Hart, Melissa Brown; Sophomore — Hayley Barton. Key l o s s e s : B o y s : Fa i s a l Abdillahi, Jaron Jones; Girls: Jenny Bergeron Promising newcomers: Boys: Junior — Justin Leclerc, Brady Julian, Nick Johnson; Sophomores — Luc Bourget, Braden Deraps, Adam Robinson; Freshman — Izaac White. Outlook: Fletcher is filling in for long-time coach Dan Campbell, who is out west helping a friend organize a marathon. Campbell will be back for some home meets and the end of the season, when the Red Eddies could be a factor in the KVAC and Eastern A championships. After a promising track season, Noor figures to be one of the top runners in Class A. Mohamed and new additions Bourget and White complete a solid top four. The girls’ team is as thin as it has been in some time, although Hart finished 26th at states in 2009. Coach’s comment: “The boys will be strong if our fifth comes in.” — Coach Ralph Fletcher

Lewiston High School LHS BOYS’ SOCCER Coach: Mike McGraw (28th year) Last year’s record: 9-3-3, lost in Eastern A quarterfinal Returning letter winners: Seniors — Caleb Leino (F), Curtis Robinson (MF), Jon McDonough (MF), Ali Hersi (MF/F), Shobow Saban (F), Joe Sullivan (FB), Tyler Hartman (MF/FB), Eric Morin (MF), Scott Ouellette (G). Key losses: Ahmed Abdirahman (FB), JJ M uss e (M F ), M at t Beauparlant (MF), Chris Jacques (G), Subeer Osman (SK), Kyle Rousseau (FB), Kurtis Stocker (SK), Keagan Cote (FB), Ahmed Mohamed (SK), Dave Ouellette (FB), Mason Gates (G), Abdullahi Omer (FB), Ahmed Mohamed (F). Promising newcomers: Seniors — Eric Hall (F/MF), Chase Cote (MF), Ryan Lemelin (FB); Juniors — Benji Saban (F), Dahir Muktar (F), Ibrahim Achekh (F); Sophomore — Eric Soucy (G); Freshman — Yusuf Yama (MF/F) . Outlook: The Blue Devils lost a wealth of talent and experience from last year. Hersi, an all-state pick, leads the nine returning players. Lewiston should have speed up front and experience in back, led by Robinson and Sullivan. Ouellette should step in nicely for Jacques in goal. Coach’s comment: “If the Blue Devils stay healthy and play well as a team, they can hang well in a very deep and competitive KVAC. If the n e w co m e r s g a i n v a l u a b l e e x p e r i e n ce , a n d w e h ave outstanding team play, we can make the playoffs and then see how far this group can go.” — Coach Mike McGraw

LHS FIELD HOCKEY Coach: Amie Sherry (third year) Last year’s record: 2-10 Returning players: Sara Marden, Allison Lafreniere, Saba Naja, Kierstyn Barnies, Kirstin McCombs. Key losses: Carley Dennis, Hanah Amhmed, Ruth Choate, Emily Craig, Angela Martel, Megan Pettilier, Yasmeen Barich. Promising newcomers: Kelsey Dumond, Natalie Rousseau. Outlook: After a two-win season, the Blue Devils have good reason to be cautiously optimistic. A good core of offensive players remains from last year’s squad, and will have to score to help out a younger defensive unit. The of fense is strong with sophmores. The defense is young, with a new senior goalie in Lafreniere. Coach’s comment: ”I think the team this year will be competitive with a strong forward line and midfield.” — Coach Amie Sherry

LHS GOLF Coach: Bob Blanchette (fourth year) Last year’s record: 7-3 (lost in KVAC quarterfinal) Returning players: Senior — Scott Gagne; Juniors — Kevin Shrader, Brandon Tiner; Sophomores — Cameron Marquis, Nick Gilbert. Key losses: N/A. Promising newcomers: Seniors — Evan Carrier, Jesse Leeman. Outlook: The team will remain competitive in the KVAC, and should be in the hunt for the playof fs. A state qualif ying score isn’t out of the question,

with Gagne and Shrader to lead the team at the top. Tiner is much improved, as are the team’s returning sophomores, and the addition of a pair of seniors will help the overall depth. Coach’s comment: “We want to play again in October. That was our goal my first three years here, we did it last year and we hope to do it again this year.” — Coach Bob Blanchette

LHS GIRLS’ SOCCER Coach: Butch Dow (first year) Last year’s record: 2-11-1 Returning letter winners: Seniors — Elizabeth Dixon (FB), Britney Martin (MF), Jessica Bowen (FB), Liz Aguilar (MF), Shelby Dobransky (MF); Juniors — Kayla Hamel (MF), Kenzi Sullivan (MF), Shae Godbout (SW), Tori White (MF); Sophomores — Tori Denis (MF), Lauren Lessard (FB). Key losses: Emilie Cloutier (FB), Chelsea Delcourt (F), Regina Smith (FB), Sage Sylvia (MF), Jill St. Laurent (F), Beth Lebel (G). Promising newcomers: Juniors — Mackenzi Masselli (G), Emily Dixon (F); Sophomores — Brianna Lajoie (MF), Emily Paione (FB), Mariah Carrier (FB); Freshmen — Maegan Mathon (F), Morgan Bowen (F). Outlook: The Blue Devils have won just six games total over the last two seasons. Lewiston has been competitive with most teams, but just haven’t been able to come out on top. Dow comes in hoping to turn that fortune around. The team is young and building, but excited about improving. Coach’s comment: “There’s a new coach, new attitude and a new season. Hold on for the ride. We hope to surprise a lot of people and bring pride back to Lewiston girls’ soccer. Hard work will bring rewards and surprises.” — Coach Butch Dow

Coach: Jamerson Crowley (second year) Returning letter winners: Boys: Seniors —Hussein Ibrahim, Tanner Adams, Russ Taligiuri; Juniors — Kevin L aver tu, M at t Chouinard, Michael Letendre, Ian Roy; Sophomores — Mohammed Barre, Andrew Balsamo, Jordan Balsamo; Girls: Senior — Ali Butler; Juniors — Nicole CourtMenendez; Joy Harrington; Stacy Oswald; Sophomores — Sylvia Beliveau, Jessica Lalonde, Kristin DiBello. Key l o s s e s : B o y s : Fa i s a l Abdillahi, Jaron Jones; Girls: Jenny Bergeron Promising newcomers: Boys: Seniors — Kyle Clabby, Kyle Palmer; Junior — Christian Staer; Freshman — Sarhan Abdillahi; Girls: Senior — Kelsey Kramer; Freshman — Saith Shaw. Outlook: The Blue Devils are looking to improve on last year’s showing. The boys, who finished sixth in the KVAC and fifth in Eastern A, hope to compete for both titles with Ibrahim, who is building off a strong finish to the 2009 season, and Lavertu, who could be on the verge of being a top 15 runner. The girls’ goal is to make the state meet, and if they can build a pack behind CourtMenendez and Butler, they’ll have a shot. Coach’s comment: “The girls really want to qualify for the state meet this year. They’re going to have to work hard for it. Top three in the KVAC and regionals is reasonable for the boys..” — Coach Jamerson Crowley

Coach: Bill County (11th year) Last year’s record: 6-3, lost in Eastern A quarterfinals Returning players: Seniors — Cody Dussault (FB/LB), Jeff Keene (TB/DB), Ben Wigant (G/ MLB), Elliott Chicoine (T/DT); Juniors — Matt Therrien (TB/ slot/DB), Jeff Turcotte (FB/DE). Key losses: Ronnie Turner (QB), Seth Mason (QB), Andy Pulk (TB/ DE), Tyler Nunez (FB/LB), Kris Gagne (OL/DL), Peter Blais (WR/ DB), Eddie Chan (FB/DL). Promising newcomers: Senior — Abdi Osman (WR/DB); Junior — Chris Madden (QB), Joe McKinnon (FB/LB) Outlook: The Blue Devils are green in some key spots, but still should be at or near the top of the PTC South. They spent an uncharacteristic amount of the last two years throwing the ball, but a return to the run-first style County’s teams are known for isn’t out of the question. Keene is the speedy lead back, but Turcotte, Therrien and McKinnon will contribute to the ground game, too. Madden takes over at quarterback and has an intriguing target in Osman. Wigant anchors a fast, swarming defense. Coach’s comment: “We’re very young. I think we have only seven seniors on the team and five are starting.” — Coach Bill County

Outlook: The Cougars narrowly missed a playoff spot last fall but graduated plenty of talent, including Thompson an allstate defender. Mt. Blue still has nine players returning and 14 new players coming in. It will take time for the inexperienced players to adjust, but the Cougars will be a team on the rise as this club gains its footing. Mt. Blue FOOTBALL Coach: Gary Parlin (18th year) L a s t ye a r ’s r e c o r d: 3 - 6 , lost to Bangor in Eastern A quarterfinals Returning players: Seniors — A.J. Larrabee (WR/CB), Ethan Kyes ( T E / IR / D E ), Br an d o n Cochran (T/NG), Matt Archer (T/DT), Dillan Burnham (G/LB), Colton Miranda (LB); Juniors — Eric Berry (WR/CB), Cam Sennick (QB/IR/FS). Key losses: Ryan Backus (QB/ FS), Nick Watson (G/DE), Zach Tracy (C/LB), Jake Malone (IR/CB), Dana Kane (RB/CB), Alec Wallace (LB), Dan York (T). Promising newcomers: Seniors — Dakota Savage (G), Brandon Scott (C), Matt Davis (RB/LB), Nick Luker (DT), Adam Lewia (DE); Junior — Isaiah Tracy (RB); Sophomore — Jordan Whitney (QB). Outlook: With seniors at 17 of the 22 starting positions and a bumper crop of 23 juniors on the roster, Mt. Blue flaunts its most experienced team in years. The Cougars threw a playoff scare into eventual Eastern Class A champion Bangor and hope to build on that this fall. The Cougars will cover for the loss of all-around athlete Backus with a possible QB rotation of Sennick and Whitney. Larrabee, Kyes, Berry and Sennick give the offense a surplus of receivers. Cochran, Archer and Kyes are multi-year starters on the defensive front five. In a more balanced PTC, the Cougars could contend for their first title since 2005. Coach’s comment: “Most of our varsity players are going to be juniors and seniors. This is the first time we’ve had that in a long time.” — Coach Gary Parlin

The girls will rank among the KVAC and Eastern A elite again with the improvement of Addie Cullenberg and Beacham and Stancioff and Hilton building off strong finishes in 2009. Coach’s comment: “I think it would be pretty realistic for (the boys) to try to be top five at KVACs and regionals and qualify for states. Mt. Blue GOLF Coach: Mark Cyr (third year) Last year’s record: 6-4 Returning players: Seniors — Dom Clements, Clint Orcutt, Jordan Williams, Adam Wiles; Juniors — Derek Hoyt, Matt Dustin. Key losses: Garrett Goodridge, Alex Witt. Promising newcomers: None. Outlook: There are no new faces here, but some of the returners are playing much better. Dustin is turning in some nice numbers and Derek Hoyt has had some good rounds. The Cougars should be competitive. They lost some good players, but the second-tier players froma year ago are , so far, up to the task. Coach’s comment: ”Our goal is to make it to the playoffs again this year, but a little higher so we can advance to the next level.” — Coach Mark Cyr

Mt. Blue FIELD HOCKEY Coach: Jeannine Paradis (eighth year) Last year’s record: 2-12

Returning players: Seniors — Jillian Perron (M), Elizabeth Leclair (M), Marcy Smith (M/F), Kelsea Adams (M), Micheala Yeaton (Back), Sarah Hunter (Back); Juniors — Taylor Harris (Back), Nichole Tracey (M), Taylor Gaboury (M), Mariah Gaboury (Back), Meghan Bullen (F). Key losses: Kaitlyn Bullen, Amanda Hall, Tori Toothaker, Maria Rowe, Miranda Collins, Jenny Kobischen. Promising newcomers: Senior — Hiliary Chaney (Back); Juniors — Heather Harrington (M), Corinne Dingley (Back); Sophomores — Kayla Newbill (F), Alyssa Williams (F), Monica Danforth (F), Kasey Gaboury (G); Freshmen — Katerina Bessey (F), Mikayla Oswald (F), Sarita Crandall (F). Outlook: It was a tough year for the Cougars a year ago after key injuries derailed a lot of the team’s top players. Early in the season, injuries are again an issue, but it appears that may clear up in time for the meat of the season. The team is young overall, and the experience the team has is in the midfield and on the back end in front of a green goalie. Mt. Blue has speed up front, and lots of youth. Coach’s comment: “ We hope to be scrappy and continue to play tough. I think we’ll definitely improve this season over where we finished last year.” — Coach Jeannine Paradis

Key losses: Ethan Morin (F) Promising newcomers: Freshmen — Nik Conrad (MF), Travis Brown (MF), Eric Lowell (F). Outlook: The Rebels dipped down to five wins after winning nine due to significant graduation losses. Telstar has a solid core of the team back and could be poised to improve upon last year and be a competitive club in the MVC. Coach’s comment:

Telstar FIELD HOCKEY Coach: Gail Wight (23rd year) Last year’s record: 16-1 (Lost in Western C final) Returning players: Seniors — Sarah Averill (HB), Emma Davis (HB), Victoria Forkus (M), Gail Lavorgna (HB), Jean Lawrence (HB), Kayla Merrill (M), Jamie Steven (F), Katie Sumner (F), Sam Tibbetts (G), Rose Wright (HB; Junior — Kallie Brown (F). They have a great understanding of the game and are not afraid of a little hard work. We are looking for ward to the Katie Sumner season ahead.” — Coach Greg Luetje

Susan Newkirk (M), Hunter Verrill (Full); Sophomore — Tabitha Corriveau (G). Outlook: An absolute force last season, a few of the pieces that made the Rebels so strong are gone to graduation. But, as usual, the tank isn’t even close to empty here. Telstar ought to be one of the top teams in the MVC and in the state in Class C again. With 10 seniors still in the lineup, this veteran-laden squad is most certainly going to be in contention. Key losses: None. Promising newcomers: Senior — Melissa Lebel; Sophomores — Dylan Cox, Jake Plummer; Freshmen — Ben Morton, Dalton Rice, Matt Michaud, Jonah Williams, Tom Lentz. Outlook: The Vikings are going to be a young team this year, but a trio of returning juniors should help carry the team, especially at home at the friendly confines of Norway Country Club. Williams is a rising star for the Vikings, who could be a thorn in teams’ sides. Coach’s comment: “ We’ll be competitive. We may not beat the top teams in the conference, and we’re a young team, but we’ll get better as the year goas on and we could surprise some people.” — Coach Mike Grace

Oxford FIELD HOCKEY Coach: Cindy Goddard (22nd year) Returning players: Seniors — Marisa Hanning, Hannah Warren, Kellie Wilcox, Jessica Gauthier, Shelby Richardson, Rachel Brennan; Juniors — Ashley West, Heather Verrier,

Promising newcomers: Sophomores — Hannah Lyons, Amanda Hanning, Micaela Smith, Gabby Goodall, Meghan Feely, Abi Egan; Freshmen — Jess Murch, Erica Jackson, Becky Mason. Outlook: Kimball and Mills will deifnitely be missed, but the majority of the team’s varsity lineup from a year ago is back. The Vkings are certainly a contender for a home game in the first round of the KVAC playoffs and then some. There is good senior leadership in this group, and there is a good mix of talented younger players to push the veterans. Key losses: Jennica Turner (MF), Kristen Delavan (F). Promising newcomers: Junior — Samantha Hutchinson (F); Sophomore — Natashia Couture (FB); Freshmen — Brianna Martin (MF), Brittany Carrier (F). Outlook: Jay is no longer a combined team with Livermore Falls. Blaisdell has 17 players, but has nine regulars back from a year ago, including Deering, the team’s top scorer. There’s experience in the midfield and on defense as well, making Jay a solid threat in the MVC. Coach’s comment: “The outlook is surprisingly good. I have really good senior leadereship. Our top goal scorer is only a junior, and the new girls are filling the holes fairly well. Summer soccer went well. We played much more than in the past, and I am seeing the benefits

That’s good news, because the Tigers’ depth may have been a factor in costing the team some second-half leads and ultimately preventing a playoff appearance for the second straight year. Calden and Couture give the Tigers a potent backfield, while Bonnevie takes over the QB spot with two handy targets, Storer and Bessey, at his disposal. There’s ample experience on the offensive line, too. Winning a couple of close games early in the season would give Jay both a big mental boost and a leg up in what promises to be another close Western C playoff race. G-NG BOYS’ SOCCER Coach: Mike Dehetre (fourth year) Last year’s record: 8-6-1, lost in Western B quarterfinal Returning letter winners: Seniors —Tyler Holmquist (G/F), Ryan Sullivan (FB), Kolby Arnold (MF), Ben Verrill (FB), Ryan Cavallaro (G/FB), Matt Kane (FB), Danny Street ((MF); Juniors — Ian Martell (MF), Craig Moreau (F), Donovan Hodges (FB); Sophomores — Will Bartlett (MF), Jack Martell (F), Jake Street (FB). Key losses: Evan Kenney (G), Erik Schrader (F), Aaron Ricardi (FB), Sam Liberty-Langlais (FB), James Wurgler (FB), Sam Hildrith (MF). Promising newcomers: Senior — Zach Knapp (F); Juniors — Travis Hicks (FB), Ben Jordan (F), Nick Jordan (MF); Sophomore — Josh Kane (F); Freshmen — Noah Lobozzo (F), Austin McDonald (MF). Outlook: The Patriots doubled their number of wins last year from the previous fall. With 13 players from that squad back, GNG hopes to remain a team to watch in the WMC and Western B.

Monmouth from page 12

Monmouth CROSS COUNTRY Coach: Tom Menendez (ninth year) Returning players: Boys: Seniors — Kevin Desmond, Pat McInnis, Zeke Merrill, Henr y Talbot; Juniors — Matt McInnis, Matt Bryant. Girls: Junior — Mackenzie Kelley; Sophomores — Kayla Minkowsk y, Jasmine Cook , Miranda Allen. Key losses: Boys: Elliott Kahl, Patrick Riley; Girls: Devon Ayer, Abby Szotkowski. Promising newcomers: Boys: Sophomores — Tyler Horsford, Brian Nugent; Freshmen — Ben Bailey, Stewart Buzzell, Marques Houston, Dylan Thombs. Girls: Juniors —Tammy Cushman, Brittany Robertson; Freshmen — Amanda Anair, Tiffany Pease.

Coach’s comment: “Playing in the tough WMC, there is never an off night. We need to stay focused each and every night. Playing together as a team will be critical to how successful we are this season. We have good veteran leadership with some young talent that will need to step up when called upon.” — Coach Mike Dehetre

Outlook: Minkowsky was the top runner at the end of last season for the MVC champion girls. Cook also moved into the top four during her freshman year and will be counted on to step up and fill the void left by Ayer and Szotkowski’s graduation. The McInnis brothers and Desmond give the boys a solid 1-2-3 punch. Menendez leads the team alone this year after eight years of co-coaching with Rick Amero, who is now Monmouth’s athletic director.

The Patriots were gutted by graduation after one of the most successful seasons in the program’s brief history. Paige Leighton Bagdon is the only returning starter, and at 6-foot-4 is a big target. Latno has limited experience at quar terback. Unlike last year, when Valente got the vast majority of the carries, the back f ield of Greenleaf and Bowen will likely split the workload behind a completely rebuilt offensive line. Coach’s comment: “We are, to say the least, building up this year. We’re very young and we have to prove ourselves.” — Coach Phil Prideaux

G-NG GOLF Coach: Don Goodwin (first year) Last year’s record: 4-6 Returning players: Jordan Rouillard, Robbie Morency, Aaron Boulos. Key losses: Cody Edmiston, Tim Pomerleau, Ryan Barton, Lance Nunley. Promising newcomers: Dillon Carll, Brandon Merry, Nick Henneman. Outlook: The team is young, and with a first year coach, the Patriots will likely be in rebuild mode this season. Goodwin is encouraged by the level of talent he’s seen in the newcomers, and Rouillard, a junior, will have to help lead this team. Coach’s comment: “We do have several players who show great promise and will contribute greatly to the team this season.” — Coach Don Goodwin

G-NG GIRLS’ SOCCER Coach: Kiaran McCormack (first year) Last year’s record: 4-10 Re t u rni n g l e t te r w i nn e r s: Seniors — Meghan Dehetre (MF), Alicia Valente (MF), Jess Richards (FB), Lauren Trickey (FB), Sarah Pelkey (FB), Elizabeth Allen (F); Juniors —Maggie Chaplin (MF), Katie Morency (FB), Michaela Despins (FB/MF); Sophomores — Haylee Cote (MF), Amanda Giggey (FB/MF), Sammie Wilkens (G/MF),

Taylor Darnell (F). Key losses: Sasha Bukovskey (FB), Taylor Damon (G), Elizabeth Lobozzo (FB), Morgan Wilson (MF), Mikkayla Mitchell (MF), Nicole Ritter (SK), Abby Ryan (FB), Kassie Wilson (MF). Promising newcomers: Freshman — Julia Martel (MF). Outlook: The Patriots improved from two wins to four last fall and hope to continue that progression. Despite losing nine seniors, GNG has 13 players back and a solid nucleus to build from. Coach’s comment: “The first step is to bring consistency to the girls’ program. The plan for this season is to improve our overall level of play. The focus will be on technical and tactical soccer, with the girls always being encouraged to play fast-paced flowing soccer. I believe that with this, we will become an attractive side to watch and a hard side to beat. We have a chance to surprise some teams and take steps in the right direction towards a playoff bid and then eventually a state title.” — Coach Kiaran McCormack

G-NG CROSS COUNTRY Coach: Adam Zukowski (fourth year) Returning players: Boys: Senior — Ben Schaeffer; Juniors — Randall Stephens, Dylan Fowler, Danny Mar shall, Jeremy H olmquis t, Aaron Grondin; Girls: Senior — Tayla Robbins; Junior — Elizabeth Pflugardt; Sophomore — Paige

Severance. Key losses: Boys: Jackson Marshall; Girls: Caroline Glennon. Promising newcomers: Boys: Sophomores — David McCann; Elijah Locke, Cam Harmer; Freshman — Wil Shafer; Girls: Junior — Lydia Larson; Sophomores — Jasmine Harper, Katie Hersom; Freshman — Grace Ferguson. Outlook: The Patriots are counting on an infusion of youth to help them compete in the strong Western Maine Conference. Shafer and McCann, a soccer convert, join Schaeffer to form the boys’ top three. The girls have more experience than recent teams, and newcomers Ferguson and Harper should help their depth. Coach’s comment: “We have a solid top three on the boys side, so I’m looking to get two more people in there to step up. We have a lot of girls back for the first time in awhile, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they mature.” — Coach Adam Zukowski

G-NG FIELD HOCKEY Coach: Jennifer Laberge (first year) Last year’s record: 8-8 Returning players: Seniors — Molly Grannall, Ashley Guptil, Breanna Harlow, Meghan Landry, Paige Leighton, Jeanna Lebreque, Leah Rottari, Kellie Sanborn, Taryn Sangillo, Kaitlyn Johnston; Junior — Bethany Ray; Sophomore — Olivia Rottari. Promising newcomers: Jasmine Turner, Emily Marshall. Outlook: With a schedule of nearly all Class C teams a year ago, the Patriots are again going to dip their toes in the Class B waters. With a veteran team and a lot more experience, this year’s team can likely expect some success at that level. Coach’s comment: “This team is much more mature and ready to compete in Class B again.” — Coach Jennifer Laberge

Mountain Valley High School Mtn. Valley BOYS’ SOCCER Coach: Jarrod Dumas (fifth year) Last year’s record: 8-5-1 Returning let ter winners: Seniors — Zach Taylor (FB), Eric Billings (FB), David Widger (FB), Ian Sweetser (FB); Juniors — Kyle Gauvin (G), Andrew Child (MF); Sophomores — Nathan Buotte (SK), Garrett Carver (MF), Alex Witas (SK), Austin Glover (MF), Andrew Phelps (SK), Joshua Rainey (MF). Key losses: Dylan Mawhinney (SK), Carl Zurhorst (MF), Jordan Theriault (FB), Travis Gauvin (SK), FRank Parsons (FB), Zach Sweetser (MF), Nicholas Goff (FB), Jamie Hutchins (FB). Promising newcomers: Sophomore — Miles Sullivan (MF); Freshmen — Andrew Boucher (MF), Casey Child (SK), Shawn Bennett (SK), Nathan Fitzpatrick (FB), Michael Theriault (FB). Outlook: The Falcons should be solid defensively with Gauvin back in goal and Taylor, an allconference pick, leading the way in front of the goal. In addition to the experienced upperclassmen, Mountain Valley has a sophomore group and a promising freshman class that should add some spark to a competitive club in the MVC. Coach’s comment: “I’m excited about this team. We had a lot of growth last year, but we’ve put that season behind us. Now, it’s about getting a relatively young team to play proper soccer. We expect to be in most games, and to learn and grow a lot throughout the year. I’m looking forward to it, and I know the guys are too.” — Coach Jarrod Dumas

Mtn. Valley FIELD HOCKEY Coach: Melissa Forbes (13th year) Last year’s record: 7-7 (Lost in Western B quarterfinal) Returning players: Senior — Kym Couch (M); Juniors — Ayla Allen (M), Chelsea Bordeau (M), MaKayla White (B), Sidney Yahn (B), Emily Gallant (G), Sam Glover (F), Rebecca Maifield (F), Whitney Ruff (F); Sophomores —

Peyton Provencher (F), Nicole Burgess (F), Alexa Fowler (B). Key losses: Shawnee Akers, Emily Knapp, McKenzie Kaubrys. Promising newcomers: Junior — Chelsea Gouvin (M); Sophomores — Liz Glover (M), MaKenzie Gallant (F). Outlook: This could be the beginning of a pair of very special years at Mountain Valley. Last year, coming off an MVC championship, the Falcons dipped to ,500 as they acclimated a new set of players to the varsity level. Now, with a large base of juniors, all with playoff experience, and a veteran goalie, this Falcon squad is just about ready for takeoff. Coach’s comment: ”The sophomores and juniors have looked really good, and now we all have a bit more experience. They’re really starting to come into their own.” — Coach Melissa Forbes

Mtn. Valley FOOTBALL Coach: Jim Aylward (22nd year) Last year’s record: 8-3, lost to Cape Elizabeth in Western Class B championship Returning players: Seniors — Cam Kaubris (QB/DB), Christian Durland (TE/DE), Ben Higley (T/DE), Tyler Mason (HB/DB), Josh Allen (RB/LB); Juniors — Izaak Mills (WB/LB/DB), Ryan Glover (T/LB). Bradley is back after starting for Class A Skowhegan, where he transferred just before the start of his junior campaign. Glover and Higley anchor an almost completely rebuilt offensive line. Carey, a wrestler, has been a find in his first football preseason. Mountain Valley will be in the mix with York, Wells and Cape Elizabeth, as always, for regional supremacy. Livermore Falls High School Livermore Falls BOYS’ SOCCER Coach: Bill Acritelli (second year) Last year’s record: 7-6-2, lost in Western C quarterfinal Returning letter winners: Seniors — Tom Bizier (MF), Keith Jewett (MF); Juniors — Jacob Freeman (F), Spencer Osgood (FB), Kyle Sawyer (MF); Sophomores — Jon Neil (F), Pat Ryan (F), Jacob Cole (F), Caleb Berry (MF), Owen Timberlake (FB), Zach Baillargeon (MF). Key losses: Trevor Timberlake (FB), Tom Ventrella (MF), Khyle Whittemore (F), Willie Brown (G), Ian Wilcox (MF), Philip Paradis (FB), James McLamb (MF). Promising newcomers: Seniors — Travis Neil (F), David Newman (FB), Jake Keene (FB), Shane McDonald (FB), Ryan Chretien (FB), Zach Vigue (F), Madison Noll (MF), Amanda Robbins (FB); Juniors — Tyson Newman (F), Ethan Hutchins (G), Stephen Hatch (MF); Sophomores — Henry Seideler (MF), Greg Whitney (F), Shaunna Damboise (MF); Freshmen — Max Moreau (F), Haley Doyen (MF), Mike Paradis (FB), Mike Chavez (FB), Chris Floyd (MF). Outlook: The Andies had so many players turn out this fall that the program has its first JV squad ever. That gives the Andies some depth and helps fuel a fast-paced style Livermore Falls hopes to play. The Andies are gunning for a fifth straight playoff berth and should be a solid club in the MVC despite losing some all-star talent. Coach’s comment: “I am thrill to see so many kids come out for the team this year. With having a JV team, it will help the future of the program. We have a solid team, and if they work hard and keep focused, they should have no problem

St. Dom’s also added Asun, a Spanish transfer who fits nicely with the Saints’ style of play. St. Dom’s should be a contender for another MVC title and be a team to watch in Western C. The Falcons have 15 incoming freshmen and have strong numbers in all classes. The program has been on the upswing the last few seasons, and the Falcons expect to continue that trend. Wright has a small group of returning players and hopes to see this club make progress toward being competitive in the KVAC. Coach’s comment: “The Hornets are optimistic about the new season, looking to play a better brand of soccer under a new head coach. The boys have accepted a new standard of expectation and are taking on the challenge of preparing themselves for the difficult task of improving their record over last year. Outlook: A perennial contender in Class B, the Hornets had an offyear last year — well, for them, anyway. The goal this year is to return to the team’s tytpical topof-the-conference form, and there is a good strong nucleus of players back to help in that endeavor. There is also a very good group of younger players in the mix here. Coach’s comment: “The goal of the team is to improve on last season’s record and go deep into the playoffs.” — Coach Wanda Ward-McLean

Leavitt FOOTBALL Coach: Mike Hathaway (ninth year) Last year’s record: 12-0, Class B champions Returning players: Seniors — Max Cloutier (C/NG), James Morin (T/DT), Jesse Pelletier (G/DT), Zach Frost (G/DE), Jason Fisher (IR/LB), Lucas Witham (SE/S), Christian McBreiarty (TE/CB); Juniors — Jordan Hersom (QB/S), Jake Ouellette (TB/LB). Outlook: 2009 was a dream season for the Hornets, who celebrated their third undefeated Class B championship campaign in the last 15 years. For most schools, following that by bidding farewell to such a talented senior class would be a nightmare. Don’t shed any tears for Leavitt. Hersom, whose last name is a fixture in Maine high school football, would have been the starting QB for most other teams in Class B last year. Witham

Key losses: Adam Soucy (MF), Zach Lennett (MF), Jake Samson (FB), Bryan Soucy (MF). Promising newcomers: Senior — Tyler Pelletier (G); Junior — Jamile Kidd (MF); Sophomore — Dalton Burns (F). Outlook: The Raiders lost one Soucy to graduation and another to transfer. That leaves Oak Hill with just a few returning seniors and limited experience. Kidd is a transfer from Deering, who Drouin says could be one of the best players the program has ever had. Oak Hill will have some growing pains this year but hopes to remain competitive in KVAC B. Coach’s comment: “They’re very knowledgeable about the game. We pass the ball well and control play very well.” — Coach Chad Drouin

Oak Hill FIELD HOCKEY Coach: Betsy Gilbert (seventh year) Last year’s record: 2-11-1 Returning players: Seniors — Ashley Beauparlant (F), Taylor Fillion (FB), Lauren Hall (FB), Sara Lacroix (G), Becca Tucci (MF), Kayla Ridley (FB); Juniors — Miranda Dalessandris (MF), Monica Grass (F); Sophomore — Brianna Hodgkins (W). Promising newcomers: Senior — Megan McGrother (FB); Junior — Katelynn Pellitier (FB/MF); Sophomore — Sandy Wilson (MF/W); Freshmen — Emily Akers (FB/MF), Heather Krook (W). Outlook: The Raiders feel the need to be more offensive-driven with some of the better-skilled players, like Beauparlant, helping to control the game with speed and stick skills. Losing three players off the front line has opened the door for some of the younger players — notably Krook — to step in. Tucci and Dalessandris

should help secure the midfield. The defense is solid, with experience from Hall, Fillion and Ridley, as well as Lacroix in net. Coach’s comment: “We know the talent is there, but it all comes down to the determination and leadership, and game day is when it counts. This team has what it takes to make it to playoffs, and it’s about them pulling together day in and day out as a team that will make it happen.” — Coach Betsy Gilbert

Promising newcomers: Juniors — Cody DePuy (RB/DB), Zach Leeman (LB); Sophomores —Mike Saunders (C), Caleb Provost (DE), Jon Averill (DB), Joel Wells (RB). Outlook: Despite the loss of a splendid senior class, Oak Hill is considered one of the top teams in Western C. One primary reason is Allen, who rushed for nearly 1,000 yards despite missing one full game and part of another due to injury as a junior. Morin, a multi-year starter in basketball, has waited his turn to be the starting QB. Wing expects him to be a good one. How far the Raiders advance into the postseason may hinge on the development of their young offensive and defensive lines. Coach’s comment: ”It looks like a really balanced league, which makes it a lot of fun for everybody.” — Coach Dave Wing

With no freshmen a year ago, having three this season provides the team with some positive outlook for the future. Alexis Priest is hoping to return to the state tournament for the third time. We have a good group that understands the game. We’re going to be growing and have to grind it out with teams.” — Coach Dan Sylvester

Lisbon FIELD HOCKEY Coach: Mark Stevens (18th year) Last year’s record: 6-8 Returning players: MaKayla Stevens, Alicyn Fitzgerald, Meghan Craig, Heather Budesheim, Chrystal Ingerson, Lyndsey Whitney, Bailey Madore, Angel Strout. Key losses: Kelsey Piche. Promising newcomers: Jen Smith, Bailey Cutler, Hanna Jordan, Shayla Pesce, Olivia Harrington, Chelsey Harrington, Haylee Jamison, Nichole Jones, Mariah Breton, Sarah Craig, Sierra O’kane, Luci Charest. Outlook: Lisbon has made the playoffs every year for the past 10 years with the exception of last season, giving the Greyhounds something to prove. With all of the team’s starters returning from except one, Lisbon should benefit

from having experience on all three lines. A deep freshman class will keep the veterans honest. Coach’s comment: “Our girls love the sport, and that is the first requirement to improving performance. We are looking forward to seeing what this group of girls can accomplish this season.” — Coach Mark Stevens

Key losses: Chris Whitney (QB/WR), Joe Doughty (OL/DL), Art Stambach (OL/DL), Scott Eck (RB/DB). Promising newcomers: N/A. Outlook: Done in by injuries last year, the Greyhounds hope to stay healthy and return to their usual spot among the Campbell Conference elite. Caron and the versatile Harrington. who went down last year af ter showing promise, lead a veteran backfield. The interior line, led by Crafts, a fouryear starter on defense and threeyear starter on offense, also has some notches on its belt. If they can get the players on the perimeter on the same page with the rest of the offense, the Greyhounds could gain big chunks of yardage. Coach’s comment: “The defense could be a little bit stronger than the offense at the beginning, while our tackles and ends get in sync.” — Coach Dick Mynahan

Outlook: The Greyhounds graduated Beaulieu, the school’s all-time leading scorer, and experience on defense in Gamache, Moore and Cloutier. Lisbon still has talent returning. Angelico played well in her first season and has Metzger up front as well. Riordan, McManus, Lemieux and Lawrence make for a solid midfield, while Fournier, Eck and Giraldo return experience on defense in front of Ramich in goal. Lisbon lost some talent, but have plenty back to keep the

Stewart was an all-MVC performer on the boys’ side, while Cornell, a championship wrestler, is a tireless leader by example for the Greyhounds. Outlook: The Ramblers have just two wins total in the last two seasons, but with eight seniors back and 15 back overall, Winthrop could be a much more competitive presence in the MVC this fall. Ruby says this is the most experienced club he’s had at Winthrop. Coach’s comment: “The seniors this season are driven, focused and determined. Coming into my fourth season as head coach for the Ramblers, this is by far the most prepared and determined bunch of kids I’ve had the privilege of coaching. I hope they have the success they deserve after all the hard work they have put in so far.” — Coach Greg Ruby

Winthrop FIELD HOCKEY Coach: Sharon Coulton (29th season) Last year’s record: 13-1 (MVC champs , l os t in E as ter n C quarterfinal) Returning players: Seniors — Nikki Scott (F), Sarah Warner (M); Junior — Paige Wood (D); Sophomores — Mar y Claire Blanchard (F), Shauna Carlson (M), Quahnah Cummings (D), Lauren

Promising newcomers: Senior — Sasha Flaherty (M);’ Junior — Nikki Burgess (HB); Sophomore — Lorin Bryant (G); Freshman — Alyssa Arsenault (G). Outlook: The Ramblers were, along with Telstar last season, the class of the MVC. They lost a lot of firepower up front and some solid defenders, so this year may see a small step back for Winthrop as it begins its conference title defense. But the step will, indeed, be small, with a wealth of younger players ready to step into roles as varsity players. Coach’s comment: ”Based on strong performances during the summer, we are optimistic about the season. We have holes to fill, but our newcomers are fitting in well.” — Coach Sharon Coulton

be counted on to lead the boys. Kilgore and Hachey also are coming off solid freshman seasons. Doyle, also a track and field standout, was third in the MVC girls’ meet last season. Lindsey is a fouryear contributor. If the Ramblers can avoid injuries, they will have enough runners to compete for the team title on both sides at the conference meet for the first time in recent memory. Moore, a 290 -pound converted lineman, could split time at fullback with Croteau if he is conditioned enough. Sanborn will also run from the QB spot. Outlook: Dirigo won its first football championship since the 1970s in resounding fashion, winning every game by at least two touchdowns. Crutchfield was a finalist for the Fitzpatrick Trophy. But it’s a new year, and 22 of the 33 players on Dirigo’s 2010 roster are freshmen

or sophomores. Ross remains one of the most electrifying players in the state. Expect him to log a lion’s share of the carries without Blackman, who is out indefinitely with an Achilles injury. Holmes was impressive during the summer 7-on-7 season. Fenstermacher and Dowland are standouts on both sides of the ball. There’s enough talent remaining for the Cougars to make a late-season run if the youngsters continue to develop. Coach’s comment: “We’ll surprise some people. We have a lot of speed.” — Coach Doug Gilbert

Promising newcomers: Juniors — Nick White, Austin Blodgett. Outlook: Dirigo was down in the standings last season, but the full year’s worth of experience for all of the players returning to play this season will no doubt help. Conant has been the top golfer for a while now, and he’ll again lead the squad. The Cougars could make the quick leap to contender this year. In scrimmages, the team is already nearly 30 strokes better than last season. Coach’s comment: “I’d like to see them play for the MVC title this year. Dirigo then lost Larsen and Turner to injuries suffered in a car accident, which could put both out for the season. There are still 11 returning players, but only five are upperclassmen. Coach’s comment: “There is a good group of juniors and sophomores with some varsity experience.
