Promising newcomers : Sophomore — Llewellyn Jensen (G); Freshmen — Kaleb Main (FB), Landon Pope (MF). Outlook: The Eddies have a new coach and not a lot of varsity experience returning. Tannenbaum, Morin, Rohani, Pleau and Cote have seen some varsity time but the rest of the squad is pretty green. Coach's comment: "It's a year of transition. We'll be young this season as we look to integrate a handful of young talent with our experienced senior class. Coach's comment: "We're excited about the return of several young players who received a significant amount of playing time last season against some of the state's top teams. With the addition of other underclassmen, the team will have more depth than in year's past." — Coach Craig Latuscha.
Culleton, Ben Morin; Freshmen — Austin Cox, Kyle Romero, Brendon Croteau. Outlook: Edward Little has a strong group and its No. 1 and 2 men should keep the Red Eddies competitive. ELHS Football Coach: Dave Sterling (third year) Last year’s record: 3-5 Returning players: Seniors — Quin Leary (TE/ LB), Sean Ford (QB), Alex Sterling (T/DT), Mitch Lachapelle (T/DT). ELHS Cross Country Coach: Mike Nyberg (first year) Last year's results: Boys — 10th in Eastern A; Girls — Eighth in Eastern A. Returning athletes: Boys: Senior — Luc Bourget, Ben Foster, Midhun Gelder, Adam Robinson; Juniors — Tony Gardner, Izaac White; Girls: Seniors — Darian Kopka, Crystal Labonte, Keira Wooten. Key losses: Justin LeClair, Abby Dunn. Promising newcomers: Boys: Senior — Roger Charest, Robbie Hollis; Sophomore — Jake Bazinet,
Johnny Boyd (TB), Jeff Clark (FB), Andrew St. Pierre (MLB); Sophomore — Ian Mileikis (CB/WR). Outlook: It remains to be seen how it will translate to the win column, but EL flaunts perhaps its most athletic football team in years this season. Even the linchpins of the offensive line, Sterling (6 feet, 240 pounds) and Lachapelle (6-1, 245) kept in shape by running 5-kilometer races this summer. Ford and Leary, equally known for their exploits on the basketball court, will be a dangerous combination through the air. Ford was the third-leading passer in the PTC despite being only a part-time QB a year ago. Boyd and Clark make up an all-new backfield. The defense is young but had a strong preseason.

EL again confronts a rough opening stretch of the schedule with Lawrence, Cony, Bangor, and Brunswick out of the gate.
Laperriere (MF). Promising newcomers: Junior — Julia Langevin (F); Freshmen — Madison DeRosa (sweeper), Abby Roy (MF/B). Outlook: Edward Little will ask several players who saw key time as reserves in 2011 to step into starting roles this season in hopes of returning to the playoffs. Williams in goal and Goulette are defensive stalwarts. Johnston will be a focal point of the offense. The KVAC is loaded at the top, as always, with Skowhegan, Cony, Messalonskee and Lawrence leading the way. EL topped the next group a year ago and could do so again if younger

Outlook: The Red Eddies are trying to build themselves back into contention after qualifying one runner for states last year. Bourget leads the boys as their No. 1, but they will be relying mostly on underclassmen such as Bazinet, Gardner and White to keep scores low. New addition Laliberte bolsters a solid veteran core of girls led by Kopka, Labonte and Wooten. Coach's comment: “It’s a young team. Our

Outlook: The Bucks only have a handful of veteran players back. They'll take on larger leadership roles while the new players will have to adjust to the varsity level quickly. Buckfield hopes to progress enough to earn a tourney berth. Outlook: This is Lewiston’s youngest team in years, but the talent level is electrifying. County said that his two-fisted tailback combo of Brown and James were “lethal” as freshmen and that Brown has “Jared Turcotte potential,” a reference to the former Blue Devil who won the Fitzpatrick Trophy and starred at the University of Maine. Curry, the younger brother of former Lewiston QB Ronnie Turner, transfers from EL and adds blistering speed. Patrie is a three-year starter on both sides of the ball. Uncertain areas

Lewiston Cross Country Coach: T.J. Niles (second year) Last year’s results: Boys — Eighth in Class A; Girls —12th in Class A. Returning athletes: Boys: Seniors — Mohamed Barre, Mohamed Awil, Andrew Balsamo, Jordan Balsamo; Junior — Mohamed Mohamed; Girls: Juniors — Mana Abdi, Faith Shaw, Taylor True; Sophomore — Courtney Allen. Outlook: Lewiston’s boys have more than just qualifying for states for the eighth year in a row on their to do list. KVAC and regional titles are reasonable goals, and challenging for a state title isn’t out of the question. Barre should be one of the top runners in the state. Awil, Mohamed Mohamed and the Balsamo brothers could help vault the Blue Devils into contention for their first state title since 2007. With the junior trio of Shaw, Abdi and True forming a solid top

Outlook: R icha rdson is t he Dev i ls' t h ird different coach in three years. He brings a contagious enthusiasm, most recently involved in the sport as an official after coaching stops at multiple prep schools, including Kents Hill. He saw improvement throughout the summer's double sessions and is impressed with the versatility of his older players. With 40 girls in camp, Richardson expects to have a highly competitive JV team that will deepen the Devils' varsity roster as the season progresses. With the high school getting progressively smaller, its been hard to get enough kids to field a team. The kids that have showed up are working extremely hard at getting better every day. The team is coming off a winless season. So we know we’ve got a long way to go to be where we want to be, but I have all the confidence in the world that we will reach our goals.” — Coach David Jensen.

Outlook: The Lakers lost veterans in Cambell and the Carriers, but Rangeley still has a solid group back that should keep them in the chase in Western D. The Lakers are still relatively young but have some experience in the Abbott’s, Jannace and Letarte. Coach’s comment: “This team has been working hard to get ready for the season. I am excited about how we are shaping up and think our positioning on the field will give us both a strong offense and defense this year.” — Coach Georgia Campbell.

Outlook: The Vikings return 10 players from a club that reached the semifinals last fall. Morin was an all-KVAC player in the midfield. Murch, Emery and Andrews anchor the defense while Eastman, Zufelt and Loper pace the front line. Coach's comment: “It is definitely hard losing nine seniors, who were great players, but I look forward to this season with the returning players and the promising newcomers we have. We are coming Brady LaFrance (QB). Outlook: Soehren is the Vikings' third different coach in as many seasons. There's continuity, as the former Poland boss was an assistant in 2011. He has installed his preferred flexbone option attack and has some flexible parts in place to run it. Godin may move from receiver to quarterback this season, with Nick Bowie and LaFrance also likely to see time under center. Godin and Croteau are tireless tacklers on defense. Oxford Hills has won only one game each of the past three seasons, all against Mt. Ararat. Defense kept the Vikings competitive in most contests a year ago and likely will lead this season's quest for upward mobility in the PTC.
Sophomores — Amber Jenkins, Whitney Morse; Freshman — Sydney Jackson. Outlook: Oxford Hills has consistently shown the ability to compete with the top teams in the rugged KVAC. After a building year in 2011, that appears to be the case again. The Vikings have some key returning players and are primed to pick up more wins and higher seed in the Eastern Class A tournament. Defense should be solid with seniors Egan, Feely and Goodall providing the last line of resistance and Hanning providing skill at both ends of the field. Coach’s comment: “The team's strong point is the willingness to work together both on and off Travis Townsend. Outlook: The Vikings are looking for a promising season with a battery of experienced seniors and juniors who offer a great deal of experience. Coach's comment: “The (Dylan) Cox kid was a varsity player as a sophomore and he is coming back. I am very excited about the season.” — Coach Mike Grace.

Maine high school football takes over at GrayNG. Former Livermore Falls and Edward Little head coach Hersom inherits a young program that has struggled to get off the ground in Western Class B. G-NG has 35 players but still lacks depth and experience, so good health is a must if the Patriots are going to improve from start to finish. Greenleaf and Dumas should give the running game a nice one-two punch. Hersom's main concern is shoring up a defense that surrendered too many points a year ago. Hicks and Chapman will headline that effort at linebacker. Coach’s comment: “We have to hope and pray

Outlook: A new look and healthy competition are themes in the Spruce Mountain camp. Polky, the onetime Winthrop star who played Division II college football and was an assistant at Husson and Bates, takes over a team with a roster of 57 that is dominated by sophomores and freshmen. He has installed an option attack that often will run without a huddle. The Phoenix hope to take advantage of their speed with Uter and Vigue. Theriault, who is battling with Hamblin for the starting quarterback role, also is an outstanding runner. Veteran linebackers Hodges and Souther lead the defense. Spruce again encounters a brutal schedule. After exhibitions with Class B title contenders Mt. Blue and Leavitt, the Phoenix play
Richards, Abbie Hartford, Morgan Fournier, Nicole Hamblin, Amanda Castonguay, Kaylia Brewer, Katie Gordan, Shyanne Turner, Rachel Reed, Patty Ryan; Freshmen — Grace Ryan, Katelyn Gervais, Bailey Gilboe, Emily Hogan, Kaylee Leclerc. Outlook: The Phoenix enjoyed an undefeated regular season and boasted the MVC player of the year, Ventrella, in their first season as a combined program. Ventrella has graduated along with five key defensive players, but numbers (40 players), energy and expectations remain high. Much of Spruce's returning talent is on the offensive end, so expect the team to be fast and explosive and geared to win highscoring games. Key losses: Chris Bubier, Evan Castonguay. Nathan Holt Promising newcomers : Freshmen — Nathan Holt, Brandon Anctil. Outlook: The youth movement is on at Spruce Mountain after it took its lumps last year. The Phoenix will position two freshman in their Nos. 1 and 2 slots. Promising newcomers: Juniors — Pa rker Hachey (MF), Justin Curtis (FB); Freshmen — Austin Roy (F/MF), Ryan Lutrzykowski (MF). Outlook: The Saints were one of t he top teams in the MVC but lost in the conference title game and then lost a heartbreaker in the quarterfinals. Desmaris was an all-state pick in the midfield and leads a strong senior class that should help keep the Saints among the top teams in Western C.
Cortolino (G); Freshmen — Courtney Desmarais (MF), Olivia Chase (F), Taylor Fillebrown (F), Autumn Martel (F). Outlook: Despite being kept out of the win column, the Saints missed the playoffs by only a fraction of a Heal point in 2011. With a 2-1 win over perennial MVC power Telstar in its first scrimmage, St. Dom's appears to have turned the corner. Greco and Eastman should provide the scoring punch that has been missing in recent seasons. Cortolino, although in her first year as a varsity goaltender, has looked sharp. The Saints will play most of their home games in the second half of the season, a quirk that should bode well for their postseason push.
Key losses: Joe Bryant, Danny Nadeau, Cody Rodrigue, Anthone Fagone, Amanda Turcotte. Promising newcomers: Freshmen — Brendan Donovan, Nicholas Gammaitoni, Brady Landry, Nate Richard, Ridge Servidio. Season outlook: For the Saints, it is a rebuilding year. Zack DeBlois is the only player with varsity experience, but with a strong feeder system, the Saints will be no pushovers. Kyle Duguay (TB/OLB). Promising newcomer: Senior — Dominic Haines (WR/QB/DB). Outlook: The Falcons have played in 17 of the 23 Western B championship games since the school formed in 1989, including the past eight. There's no reason to expect that tradition to change, although Mountain Valley must avoid injury and eligibility issues because the customary depth isn't there. The 54-man roster is thin with juniors and seniors. There are plenty of playmakers left, however, including Hosie, one of two 1,000-yard rushers for the Falcons a year ago. Theriault moves from f lanker to the
backfield. Rodriguez and Merrill are back to anchor the defense. Haines was the starting QB at Telstar a year ago and will contribute in a variety of roles. Aylward doesn't see an overwhelming favorite in Western B, but his team is capable of evolving into that role again.
Swett (G), Addy Gordon (D), McKenzie Gallant (D); Juniors — Nik k i Couch (MF), A llyson Carlton (F), Ellie Hall (sweeper); Freshmen — Lexy Duguay (F), Kaitlyn Radcliffe (MF). Outlook: Mountain Valley stunned MVC rival Spruce Mountain to reach its first-ever regional final a year ago before falling 1-0 to York. The Falcons will try to build off that experience without most of the girls responsible for the journey. Only three players are back. Burgess was the leading scorer and will be asked to lead the offense again. Fryover inherits an increased role at center midfield. Swett steps into the big shoes of Emily Gallant, now playing at Saint
Joseph's College. The two freshman should make an immediate i mpac t . T he y 'r e a y ou n g g r ou p, b u t t he Fa lcons shou ld win their share and challenge for a playoff berth. Coach’s comment: “I expect we'll win some ga mes a nd I ex pect we’ll get better.” — Coach Melissa Forbes.
Briggs (F), Jamaica Ford (F), Ari Glover (ST), Hannah LaPointe (F), Kirstin Ridge (MF), Mercedes Gurney (FB). Promsing newcomers: Freshman — Karen Flaherty (G) Outlook: The Falcons have a solid group of returning players back to help improve upon last year. Mountain Valley has a defense built around upperclassmen. So that should be the club's strength. The Falcons should also have some depth and athleticism that might help them compete in the MVC. Coach's comment: "We're looking forward to seeing this exciting, energetic, good team. This is going to be a fun team to watch this season." — Coach Jason Perreault.
