Halloween-themed wedding is romantic Edited by Denise Scammon Special Sections Editor Tanya Lynne Farrington and Luke Martin-Thomason were married on October 31, 2009 in front of 40 friends and family members. The couple decided to forego much of the traditional wedding elements and instead opted for a fun Halloween-themed wedding that was still romantic and intimate. The double-ring ceremony was held at Bradbury Memorial Chapel in Canton Point. Built in 1890, the church is rustic and does not have electricity or heat. Lighting for the late afternoon ceremony was produced by chandeliers with oil lamps and candles, which according to the groom’s mother, Crystal-Lynne Williams of Hartford, the lighting “made for a magical glow. Soulful violin was performed by Sam Norli, friend of the groom, and organ music was provided by

Beth Goodlief, sister of the groom’s father.” The couple traveled in style in a classic 1959 Chevrolet Nomad, owned by the bride’s uncle, Steve Hiscock. The reception continued the H all owe e n th e m e w ith th e 150-plus guests decked out in costumes of every sort. A life-size Dracula greeted guests at the door where they then entered “into an amazing, magical space,” said Williams. The Knights of Columbus Hall in Jay was transformed with Halloween decorations including dozens of pumpkins, flowers, strings of lights, and helium balloons all in purple, black, and orange. Black roses adorned the tables.

and family members collected H a l l o w e e n d e co r a t i o n s f o r the wedding during the year preceding the event. The wedding favors were “framed photos of the bride and groom, skull candles with the date” of the wedding, and “skull goblets with purple M&M’s with the bride’s and groom’s names imprinted on them,” said Williams. “The bride made a ceramic platter to be signed by the guests and the bride’s mother, Donna Farrington of East Dixfield, made the guest book and many of the boutineers.” Having friends and family pitch in with decorations and wearing costumes made the event homegrown and fun. Jackie Dupuis was the photographer.

As a full-time student on a tight budget, the bride’s goal was to create a special day for everyone at tending the wedding; she

The wedding cake made quite a hit with the guests as it was intentionally created to look lopsided and was dubbed the

”The Nightmare Before Christmas” wedding cake complete with Jack and Sally cake topper. “Nightmare Before Christmas” cake in reference to the 1993 movie of the same name. The cake was topped with Jack and Sally, two characters from the same movie. Several guests, upon seeing the cake for the first time, “kept trying to prop up the cake,” said Williams. The guests must have known the wedding was going to be a “trick

Halloween Wedding

So why not a wedding on Halloween? By Dan Marois Freelance Writer Linda Cloutier and Arthur Sutton were married on Halloween in 1994. It was a second marriage for Linda and the first for Arthur. “I wanted to include him in the planning so I let him pick the colors and theme,” explained Linda. “His favorite color is orange and his favorite holiday is Halloween.”

It was an easy decision for the couple as they planned their wedding on Halloween complete with black and orange decorations and “trick or treat” shirts and shawls worn by guests. “In having a Halloween wedding, Arthur said that he would never forget the anniversary,” noted Linda. “And he never has!”

Linda Cloutier stayed somewhat traditional with a white wedding dress. But with the Halloween theme, she chose a black jacket and black hat to accompany the bridal white gown. Ghosts and jack-o-lanterns adorned the wedding cake with a witch and the Grim Reaper standing by.

The rustic fall wedding of Joshua Smith and Taylor Legare Edited by Denise Scammon Special Sections Editor

O

n a fall day in September 2009, Taylor J. Legare, of Lewiston, married Joshua D. Smith, of Mechanic Falls. The couple rented a private camp for the wedding weekend in Harrison, Maine where they held their wedding rehearsal, ceremony, and reception. Legare said, “We had full reign of the facility. What made our wedding so great was the ability to have everything in the same place so the guests did not have to travel far between ceremony and reception.”

The wedding guests arrived early to enjoy the outdoor setting and waterfront scenery. The wedding ceremony took place “on the lawn under a vintage ladder that was suspended from an oak tree and draped with tulle,” said Legare. The natural decorations blended in with the outdoor setting and included “mums, purple fountain grass, and fresh-picked sunflowers and cat-tails in over-sized mason jars that were used to dress up the outdoor seating.”

The bride wore an ivory-colored wedding gown with a trailing ivorycolored sash and carried a bouquet of gerber daisies in deep red and burnt orange colors with golden yellow accent flowers. “The bridal party wore rich brown dresses and had bouquets of bold-colored gerber daisies,” said Legare. “My groom and the groomsmen wore khaki linen suits with a single gerber daisy on the lapel. The groomsmen had coordinating brown vests to match the girls.”

The camp’s rustic reception hall was the setting for the 140 guests to enjoy a buffet-style dinner complete with seasonal leaf y decorations and spiced apple candles that scented the room. Legare said, “Our raspberry swirl cake was ivory in color and adorned with beautiful, fresh-cut flowers to match the bouquets. We topped the cake with a large silver

‘S’ to symbolize our new shared name of Smith.”

Dancing took place in the lodge overlooking the water. A wraparound porch allowed guests to sit and watch the sunset with the fall foliage as a backdrop. “After a fun-filled night of dancing and celebrating, we let the DJ retire and took the party to the large outdoor fireplace where everyone enjoyed live music and s’mores.”

A continental breakfast was served in the morning to the guests who stayed overnight in the camp’s cabins. Legare continued, “It was a great time for everyone and just the beginning of a lifetime of memories to come.”

Finding the right wedding wardrobe for your groom All eyes are typically on the bride during a wedding. But that doesn’t mean the groom should be a shrinking violet. While the bridal gown may garner the “oohs” and “aahs,” what the groom wears on his wedding day is quite important as well. In many ceremonies, the groom spends several minutes standing beside the alter awaiting his bride-to-be. Before the first notes of “Here Comes the Bride” are played, all eyes will be on him as he anxiously awaits the start of the ceremony. As such, it is essential that the groom look well polished

and is dressed in accordance to the tone and scope of the wedding. Because most weddings are formal occasions, grooms often choose to wear a tuxedo or highend suit. A well-fitted tuxedo combined with a formal shirt, tie and vest is the classic wedding ensemble. Generally the tuxedo jacket is single-breasted with three buttons and satin trim. This style is universally flattering to most men’s frames. Accessorizing the tuxedo can mean dif ferent things. Some choose to wear a vest while others opt for a cummerbund.

Others add suspenders. These accessories, including the tie or bow tie and the vest, can be all black like the tuxedo or can be coordinated with the colors of the wedding party. For example, if the bridesmaids are wearing butter yellow gowns, the groomsmen can wear yellow accessories. However, to set themselves apart from the groomsmen and ushers, grooms tend to go with the classic black and white and forego colors. On some occasions, grooms may choose to wear a white tuxedo.

Because he will be photographed all day long, a groom can choose to take some cues from his soonto-be-spouse. He may indulge in a manicure to ensure nails and cuticles are neat. A dusting of translucent facial powder can tame shiny skin in photos. Some couples opt for teeth whitening prior to the wedding to ensure a sparkling smile.

The exception to a tuxedo or a suit would be for a casual wedding, particularly one held at the beach or in a park. Then the groom can wear what will coordinate for the occasion, such as a dress shirt and slacks, or even sandals and shorts for the ultra-casual wedding.

Just married? How to reconcile your decorating differences After the “I dos” are exchanged and the reception is over, couples find out that the realities of cohabitation do not always make for smooth sailing, especially when it comes to blending different tastes and styles. While newlyweds find themselves saying “I do” at the altar, that phrase frequently turns into “I don’t” when the couple begins combining two unique decorating styles into a single household. “It’s never easy to incorporate two divergent ideas of design and comfort into one home,” says Christopher Prebel, senior product manager at Pratt & Lambert Paints. “The man likes modern. His new wife likes flea-market chic. If you pick only one style, it’s not going to feel like a ‘married’ home. The question, then, is, ‘How can you blend both and be satisfied?’”

design or a “bride and groom” theme, or personalize them with your names and wedding date or with a photo of the two of you together, coasters can keep the memory of your special day alive for guests every time they sip a beverage. Donation and charity Another option gaining popularity is to give guests a token that lets them know a donation has been made in their honor to a muchloved charity. For example, you can give a small pink photo frame imprinted with the breast cancer awareness ribbon and a portion of the purchase price will go towards an organization that supports young women with breast cancer. Or, use a tent card at each place setting to let guests know what charity you’ve donated to on their behalf. For more wedding favor ideas, visit www.MyWeddingReceptionIdeas. com. This might take some time, but no one says you have to decorate an entire house overnight. First, de-clutter. Both of you have baggage that you could stand to dump, donate or list on eBay. Sit down together and negotiate what stays and what goes, and then stick to your plan. Nex t, spend time looking at decorating publications and websites and watching decorating shows on TV to decide what sort of style you both like. Talk about what you see, what you love and what you don’t. The husband might hate feminine, floral prints. And, the wife might cringe at preppy plaid. But maybe they both prefer slip-covered sofas and daring wall colors. And once you find that common ground, you can start formulating your decorating strategy.

Paint is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to start personalizing any living space, and it all comes down to color. Color possibilities are endless, so chances are you’ll be able to find something you both like. Visit your local paint dealer and collect color chips or actual inexpensive paint samples that you can put on the wall to compare options. Most paint companies have helped simplify the color selection process. Pratt & Lambert Paints, for example, has a color display that features pop-out color chips that let you evaluate color by overlaying chips against existing furniture and design elements. Additionally, various color cards provide you with suggested color combinations to give you further inspiration.

Using both of your decorating styles could create a beautiful room. likes to remain en vogue with your decor choices, consider researching the latest color trends. A variety of design industry groups develop color forecasts each year, and paint manufacturers prepare palettes to echo these predictions. Hot directions for 2010 include:

Local weddings: Ideas you can use in your own wedding

A fabulous wedding for less than $5,000 Story by Denise Scammon Special Sections Editor Photos by Eric Eisele and Katie Houghton

Local bride Sarah Buswell married Brian Labrecque in an outdoor wedding which took place in late August last year at their home, “Freckle Farm,” in Turner. Buswell stated that it was a second marriage for both herself and her husband, and that the wedding was “very original and eclectic and our friends and family are still talking about it, saying it was the best wedding ever.” Instead of the typical wedding ceremony, Buswell’s good friend, Jennifer O’Brion, an ordained minister, read a story to the 120 guests about how the bride and groom met. Buswell said, “Our guests laughed and cried” while listening to the story as they sat on “hay bales covered with ‘handkerchief’ material purchased from Wal-Mart in Auburn.” The bride purchased her wedding gown for $30 at Mexicali Blues in Freeport, but, she said, that the tea length dress was “not long enough, so I purchased another white dress of similar material and cut it apart and added it to the

first.” The bride’s son, Sam Buswell, picked out his own outfit of jeans, shirt, vest, bow tie and straw fedora. Sam acted as “Lord of the Rings” and, said the bride, “We had our rings nestled in a bird’s nest set in a hydrangea tree that was planted in honor of my father, Dana Coburn.” The groomsmen wore jeans, blue button-down shir ts, fedoras, sunglasses and red Chuck Taylor sneakers. “You should have heard people laugh when [the groomsmen] walked out.” The bride explained that the bridesmaids wore dark gray, s tr ap l ess , emb roidere d sun dresses from the Gap, discovered by the bride’s daughter and junior bridesmaid, Abby Buswell, while “on an impromptu shopping trip [and the dresses were] on clearance no less. All the girls wore flip-flops and sunglasses and were responsible for their own jewelry.”

flowers were “picked the morning of the wedding by my daughter, Abby, and friends Jackie Maillet and Rachel Firth. They drove around Turner and Wayne and picked [flowers growing along] the roadside. My mom, Jackie, and I threw them together into bouquets as the girls were getting their hair done.” The bride’s sister, Ellen Sanborn, designed the wedding invitations which were printed by Evergreen Printing in Auburn. The envelopes and labels were handmade. The wedding programs were styled as paper fans and the guest book was composed of quilt squares signed by the guests and which will be stitched into a quilt. “We asked for song requests on the RSVP postcard, added the songs to our wedding playlist and then played them on our iPod from large surround sound speakers in the barn,” said Buswell. “And, just to make things interesting, our sheep,

Approaching the issue of children at weddings There are no etiquette rules regarding whether children should attend weddings. The decision is entirely up to the couple getting married. If you are a guest invited to a wedding and your children are not, there is no reason to take offense. You should certainly respect the wishes of the bride and groom. It is improper to turn up at the occasion with your children and put the couple on the spot. Young children are unpredictable and cannot be trusted to behave at all times. Couples may not want to have their festivities — often occasions that cost $30,000 or

more — to be interrupted by children who may be a little too boisterous. A l s o , c h i l d r e n m ay b e a n inconvenience to adults simply looking to have a good time. How much can you enjoy yourself if you are constantly keeping an eye on a toddler or tending to an infant? Chances are your wedding experience will be compromised. If your child is invited to a wedding, or you are the happy couple tying the knot, consider these tips. • Although children of all ages may be welcome, it’s often better to limit children to ages 4 and older, especially if they’ll be participating in the ceremony as a ring bearer or flower girl. Children of this age are better able to take direction and are a little more mature. Check if your ceremony site has rules regarding children in the ceremony.

Food and wine: How to create a perfect marriage Weddings are one of life’s most celebrated occasions. For bridesand gro oms-to - b e and their families, an incredible amount of creativity and planning is poured into this all-important day: from the wedding gown to the ceremony, from the invitations and flowers to the wedding cake itself. One of the most-remembered details is what guests are served, so the wedding menu should reflect the couple-tobe’s unique style and personality. Aida Mollenkamp, host of the popular Food Network show “Ask Aida” says, “The food you serve should be like your dress - reflect you and fit you like a glove - so, if you prefer a cupcake tower to a cake, go for it!” Tips for a memorable wedding menu • Find your inspiration. The Lipperts’s wedding plans had intrigued me from the start. It was a cold January day when Wiscasset resident Tim Lippert called to reserve our popular shelter area for his son Jesse’s wedding. Lippert explained that since Jesse and wife-to-be Valerie DeLoach lived in Philadelphia, the task of making the necessary Reid State Park arrangements had fallen to him. “Philadelphia?” I asked, a little t aken ab ack . “ Phila de lp hia , Pennsylvania?” “Yes, Philadelphia Pennsylvania,” Lippert responded with an easy laugh. “They’re seriously coming all the way from Philadelphia to get married at our shelter?” Lippert chuckled again, assuring me that DeLoach and Jesse’s decision had been easy. Reid State Park was the couple’s favorite place on earth, and they were very much looking forward to exchanging wedding vows on the shelter lawn on Sunday, May 30. I was tickled pink that Jesse and DeLoach were traveling so far to be married at Reid, and I gleefully took Lippert up on his invitation to swing by the shelter during my daily rounds; I definitely wanted to meet the couple who also had formed such an emotional attachment to my favorite Maine state park. I didn’t realize that I would meet two such couples, on a picture-

“Jesse, it ’s so nice to meet you,” I said, smiling back at the handsome, tuxedo-clad groom as he warmly shook my hand. “I’m delighted you came all this way to get married at Reid.” As I congratulated Jesse, his father filled me in on a little family history. “You see,” Lippert explained, “it was 32 years ago nearly to the day when I married my wife, right here in this exact same spot.” “You’re kidding, that’s fantastic,” I exclaimed. I looked at the Lippert family standing together against the backdrop of the tastefully decorated shelter lawn, and something came together in the cosmos with an almost audible click. “So, besides the natural beauty, there’s a real emotional connection to my family here,” Jesse added. I nodded, beginning to grasp how truly momentous this day must be for all of them. “Yeah, the weight of it is. . .; pretty powerful stuff,” Susan told me later with a quiet sigh. DeLoach was a stunning bride. A small dressing tent had been erected in the far corner of the shelter lawn, where she and her at tendants had ample room to perform their final touches in privacy, out of sight of the gathering guests. DeLoach made tiny adjustments to her headpiece in the full-length mirror someone had the foresight

to bring along, while bridesmaids a p p li e d su ns c re e n to b a re shoulders and fine-tuned each other’s make-up. “You look. . .; amazing,” I whispered to DeLoach, trying to find a word that adequately captured her radiance. She was chic and elegant, and her perfectly tailored ivory gown flowed around her as if it had been specifically designed to catch the ocean breeze that day. “Sam,” DeLoach said, putting down her veil and headpiece long enough to take both my hands in hers. “I’m so glad you stopped by,” she said graciously. I was so glad I had stopped by too, and I thanked DeLoach for letting me share in her wonderful story. “What did you say when Jesse wanted you to leave Philadelphia and get married 500 miles away?” I asked her, still clasping her hands. “Actually, it was my idea,” DeLoach told me with a smile as wide as the ocean behind her. “I had visited here many times with Jesse, and I knew what a special place it was for his whole family.” DeLoach’s 7-year-old daughter, Charla, was thoroughly enjoying the prep-time too. She had a joyful heart, and in her own flawless dress, identical in color to her mother’s, she merrily flitted back and forth among the group of women. Later, as Charla walked with perfect poise down the aisle and took her place of honor with the wedding party, the beautiful little girl who had seemed so childlike moments before carried herself with an air of grace and sophistication so well beyond her years that it gave me goose bumps. A few seconds later, DeLoach emerged from the tent looking as if she’d stepped off the cover of every bridal magazine ever

When her exquisite gown wafted in the breeze as she retraced the path that Jesse’s mother had walked 32 years prior, there wasn’t a person who didn’t gasp aloud. And when Jesse bent down to say a separate set of vows to little Charla, his voice catching with emotion as he presented her with a smaller version of the ring he had given DeLoach, there wasn’t a dry eye on that lawn, including mine.

applauded in the background, Valerie DeLoach became Valerie Lippert, and a family was born. For 25 years, I’ve watched people make memories at Reid State Park. Rarely however, have I had the privilege to witness an event that so beautifully and triumphantly left mere happiness in the dust as it entered a realm of pure joy that spanned three generations. Susan Lippert was right; the weight of it is pretty powerful stuff indeed.

The fairy tale wedding of Justin and Kim Desrosier By Linda Galway Freelance Writer Two hearts, one love. Sounds a lot like a fairy tale, doesn’t it? That’s just how Kimberly Dyer and Justin Desrosier planned their wedding, and it all came true for them. Two people, one life, converging at just the right time. There were so many opportunities to meet along the way. Born in the same hospital, both growing up in Hebron, attending the same schools, but it wasn’t until they were introduced at the local convenience store that they began the journey that ends in destiny. When the couple looked for a location for their June 12 wedding, the obvious choice for them remained close to their hearts.

The Inn where the wedding took place.

“We chose the Greenwood Mountain Inn in Hebron,” Kim said. “It’s beautiful there. Flower gardens, a waterfall, vines on the arbor, a gazebo.” All the elements for a fairy tale wedding were in one place, including the mode of transportation. Looking “just like Cinderella,” notes her mom Kelly, the bride, along with her wedding party, arrived at the ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage, driven by Audrey Slattery, also from Hebron. “We started from about a half-mile away,” noted Kim, “in an area that looks like a gateway where there are a lot of trees.”

Kim Desrosier sitting by the window awaiting the start of her wedding day.

Using the colors and symbols of love, Kim selected hearts in shades of pink for most of the decorations that go along with a fairy tale wedding. Her wedding party wore the deep pink of fuchsia, the cake sported pink hearts, fuchsia and white M&Ms with their names and the wedding date were abundantly provided in heart-shaped containers, and even the bubble bottles displayed two hearts.

The wedding cake with pictures of loved ones.

The floral bouquets, of course, were created of fuchsiacolored flowers with white accents, and the bridal bouquet included lilies of the same hue. The wedding reception for nearly 200 took place under a white tent, decorated with pink and white balloons and matching pink and white tablecloths; even the groomsmen wore fuchsia-colored ties. “It was all amazing,” she said. “I loved getting ready and riding in the carriage, but most of all, I loved everyone together having a good time.” Her advice to other brides? Make sure the music lasts. “We scheduled the DJ from 3 to 8 p.m., but by the time everything was done — ceremony, photos, the meal — it seemed not to leave as much time for dancing as we would have liked.” Also, taking enough time to plan the event makes all the difference, she said. “We allowed a year to plan; plus, you can save up your money because it all comes due so fast!” So two hearts, one love. Two people, one life. Happily ever after.

The decorations for the outdoor wedding under the tent were in pink and white.

Fall in love with these fall wedding ideas Spring and summer may be the seasons that first come to mind when you begin planning a wedding, but autumn has a lot to offer brides too. From cooler, dryer weather and the glorious backdrop of fall colors to the opportunity to land a great deal on a reception venue, fall delivers many rewards for couples on the road to wedded bliss. “We’re seeing increased interest in fall weddings,” says Raymond Miller of My Wedding Reception Ideas.com, a leading online resource for brides seek ing unique wedding favors and other

items. “Brides love the natural colorfulness of the season and the weather tends to be more reliable and comfortable for outdoor weddings. In fact, autumn may soon surpass spring as a preferred month to hold a wedding.” If you’re planning your nuptials for harvest season, Miller offers some advice for incorporating the best elements of the season in your big day. Cash in on color Vibrant reds, dazzling oranges, glittering golds and bold browns -

fall’s palate is a glorious profusion of colors unique to the season. Autumn brides should revel in the season’s colors, drawing the hues of fall into all aspects of their weddings, from bridesmaid gowns to table linens, floral arrangements and fall wedding favors. “Fall colors offer many advantages when it comes to planning a wedding,” Miller says. For example, it’s easy to mix and match more than one fall color because they tend to naturally complement each other. For a spring wedding, it might be difficult to find just the right floral colors to enhance

a particular shade of lavender bridesmaid gown. But pair bronze gowns with flowers that sport autumnal reds and golds, and you’ll have a sure win. Favor the fall Brides looking for truly unique

Hot wedding favors trend: Marry fun and function in a useful favor When it comes to creating per fection on your wedding day, it’s hard to understate the importance of the wedding favor. The favor is the piece of your wonderful day that guests will take away with them. You want it to be something special, unique and memorable, a tangible reminder that they’ll turn to again and again. “ We ’re s e e in g m o re b r i d es today turning to wedding favors that marry fun and function, uniqueness and usefulness,” says Allison Bergstedt of My Wedding Reception Ideas.com, a leading online resource for brides seeking

unique wedding favors and other wedding items. “Perhaps it’s a reflection of the times, as we are all tending to be more frugal and practical with our money. The favors of choice today are ones that guests will find useful long after the ceremony is over.” Here are some hints for useful favors: Kitchen utensils “Not everyone may have a mantle on which to display a pretty silver picture frame, but virtually everyone has a kitchen,” Bergstedt says. “So items that can be used in the kitchen make very practical

favors. Plus, with so much variety of utensils used in the kitchen, it’s possible to find a favor that is not only useful, but that matches your personality as well.” Popular kitchen wedding favors include kitchen timers, olive oil bottles, cookie cutters, measuring spoons, ice cream scoops and bowls, melon ballers, cake and pie servers, cheese graters and even tea infusers. Salt and pepper shakers What favor better embodies the essence of marriage - the perfect pairing of two things that seem opposite, but that complement each other so well that neither is

fully functional without the other? Salt and pepper shakers can range from fun and frolicking like the adorable bride and groom set, to classic and nostalgic represented by a set shaped like delicate seashells, to modern and bold such as a set rendered in stainless steel. Coasters Who doesn’t have a table they would like to protect from water marks? Coasters make a great prac tical favor, plus they ’re available in such a variety of designs and styles you’ll have no trouble finding a set that flatters the theme of your wedding. Whether you choose a beach

In today’s economy, is there a need for a wedding planner? Weddings can be one of life’s biggest expenses. In the current economic climate, it’s no surprise that couples are looking for ways to cut down the costs. “Most people are so busy that they don’t have time to plan an event with everything else they

have going on in their lives,” says Deborah Wallace, instructor with the Event Management Diploma Program at The Art Institute of Vancouver, who thinks it’s important to see time as a precious commodity, as opposed to just dollars.

Wallace reflects that it can be difficult to explain the time saving as a justification to couples; for example, it’s easier to explain to a company how much they would save in staff wages through hiring a professional to plan an event. “It’s hard to make this clear for a bride and groom,” she says. “A company knows what their employee’s time is worth, but what are your friends’ and family’s time worth?” Wallace also ques tions the wisdom of asking loved ones to help out with those important wedding responsibilities, such as picking out linen or choosing the flowers. “It can turn a celebration into a stressful experience for the helpers, who feel like they’re working while everyone else is enjoying the festivities,” she says. “People spend a huge amount on weddings, and often the Wedding Planner is actually a fraction of the overall costs,” says Amy Alto, whose company, Clear the Floor, organizes first dances for wedding parties. Wedding Planners can actually help couples save some much-needed dollars, through discounts with suppliers and services they use regularly. In Alto’s experience, the Wedding Planner will also tend to get the best service from vendors for their client. “The planners give them

Mike Granek (CSEP), academic director for the Event Management Diploma Program at The Art Institute of Vancouver, suggests that training as an event planner can provide the skills needed to plan weddings and leave career options wider. Transferable skills, such as project management, financial management, customer service and risk management, are all used in planning a wedding. For example, managing a stressed or sensitive bride takes customer ser vice sk ills, and f inancial planning helps to keep all the wedding costs within budget.

BBB offers money management advice for newlyweds

Decorating

Marriage is an exciting time for a couple, however, once the honeymoon is over, it’s time to sit down and get serious about your finances. After walking down the aisle, Better Business Bureau advises newlyweds to take control of their money or risk a rocky financial future.

Sy m b o l - C o l o r s i n t h i s palette seek inspiration from architectural and historical symbolism - rich, complex and even moody hues, such as tobacco, bay leaf green, maroon and warm reds.

According to research by Utah State University, married couples who frequently fight over money are more likely to split up. Even when compared to frequent fights over other issues — such as chores, sex and in-laws — fighting about money was a better predictor of a future divorce. “When

considering

your

financial future, it’s important for newlyweds to realize that they are in it together and nurturing their nest egg can be a rewarding experience — and not just a source of frustration and fights,” said Alison Southwick, BBB spokesperson. “Have the conversation earlier, rather than later, so that you can develop healthy personal finance habits together.” In order to start your new life together on the right financial foot, BBB offers the following advice: Let financial skeletons out of the closet. After marriage, any personal debt becomes “our debt” and it’s important to sit down early on

and discuss what outstanding obligations exist on both sides including car loans, school loans and credit card debt. Review your credit reports to get a better idea of what you are both bringing to the marriage. Build a budget. After you’ve gotten a grasp on your debt, it’s time to build a monthly budget. Look at your monthly bills to create a realistic picture of how you spend. Discuss your long term goals— such as buying a house or car and having kids—and figure out how much money you need to set aside every month to reach those goals.

confusion, one person should be assigned to paying the bills every month. This doesn’t mean that the other person takes a back seat role in managing the finances. Have a discussion at least every month about your financial progress in order map your path and nip any bad spending habits in the bud. Plan for emergencies. Many young couples fail to save money to get them through hard times such as health problems and unexpected unemployment. Experts recommend you set aside three to six months of salary in a rainy day fund—ideally an interest-bearing

Sense - Hues in this palette not only please the eye but also stimulate the other senses by echoing tactile wonders with colors like that of an artichoke. Sojourn - Inspired by the sights of global travel, the colors in this palette combine an eclectic mix of cultural references, blending camels and honeyed lights with rich, artistic reds, slate blues and plums. Color is the biggest hurdle in any decorating decision - and once you cross that challenge off your list as something you’ve accomplished together, the rest should fall easily into place. Some other helpful tips to keep in mind while you’re creating the perfect first home include the following: • Mix it up, don’t match it perfectly. It’s fine to be eclectic. A home that is perfectly “matchymatchy” lacks character. Your home is about you, and it should carry a bit of both of your personalities vs. looking like you copied a picture in a magazine. • Cleverly blend items from the past with new things in every room. You both had a life before you got married - let your history reflect into your present. Yes, it might involve compromise, but that’s what relationships are about, isn’t it? • Buy big items, such as furniture, window treatments, flooring up gr a d es an d ap p lian ces , together. Shopping as a team gives added cohesiveness to the overall look and allows you both to have a say in major purchases. Marriage is “for better or for worse.” A little creativity and compromise will ensure that at least your decor is for “the better.” Courtesy of ARAcontent

Because today’s first marriages are occurring later in life - not to mention second or third marriages - more often the modern dilemma is whose couch stays and tallying how many flat-screen TVs the couple has between them. When couples married 40 years ago they were barely into their 20s and often still living at home. The traditional wedding shower carried great value in that age as it supplied newlyweds with all the necessities that married life required, including dishes, cookware and bedding.

Bob Gomori got married last year at 27 - just one year shy of the median age for men. However, Gomori had already built a successful career as a franchisee of the moving company Two Men and a Truck in Youngstown, Ohio, and he’d already owned his own home for several years. He had a unique vantage point of the challenges ass o ciate d w i th co m b inin g households for first marriages. “It’s tough because you both have things that you want to keep, but to keep it all is certainly not the most efficient thing to do,” Gomori says. “The successful couples I see as a mover are those who take first marriage as an opportunity to take inventory of what they have and sort it out before they combine homes. I know it’s a lot to think about, particularly with wedding plans in the works, but ultimately you avoid moving things two or

If you can legitimately use two of something in your new life, such as televisions or stereos, go ahead and keep both. • Do the same evaluation for small items, such as silverware, as you do for the larger items. These smaller items can add up quickly, and often produce the most basement or attic clutter. • Organize with boxes and colored markers. Contact your local Two Men and a Truck moving company to purchase a variety of box sizes before you begin so you can appropriately tag and box both items that stay and those that go along the way. • Think about donating to those in need. If a garage sale isn’t of interest, consider donating to local churches or synagogues, homeless shelters or the Salvation Army.
