he Frank lin Count y Chamber of Commerce recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to two deserving area residents, Amanda Richards of Strong and Jenna Hamlin, also of Strong. The scholarships are given based on community involvement, scholastics, and an essay. The Chamber scholarships are among the few scholarships available to “non-traditional students as well as graduating seniors. This year, however, both scholarships went to seniors, both students graduated from Mt. Abram High School.
Amanda plans to attend the University of Maine Orono and take part in the Honors Program. Jenna plans on obtaining her B ache lor ’s D e gre e in E arly Ch i l d h o o d Ed u c at i o n f r o m Thomas College, Waterville. Both plan to use their education here in Franklin County. Amanda was salutatorian of the class of 2010, senior class secretary, and active in band, honor society, girls book club, soccer, basketball, and tennis, while maintaining a 97.456 grade average.
Jenna was a member of the National Honor Society, and girls book club, as well as a volunteer with the American Red Cross blood drives. She works with children at day care centers and as a camp counselor. She is actively involved in various business organizations and is interested in culinary arts. In making the presentations, David Robie of the Chamber’s Scholarship Committee mentioned the recipients’ involvement in, and demonstrated commitment to, Franklin County.

Bouffard’s Furniture & Carpet
B
ouffard’s Furniture has been a fixture in Farmington since 1962, when they opened in the downtown area. They have been in their current location on the “strip since 1968. Jim Bouffard has been active with the Chamber of Commerce since he opened the store in the 60’s with his brother Gary. Jim was active as a board member of the Chamber back in the 60’s when they just started to really grow. He recruited many members, “at least 60 in one year, he recalled recently. “People used to think that the Chamber
Ryan Morgan of RDM Electric
was just a benefit to the motels and restaurants back then, he said. “It took some convincing to make them realize that the increased tourism helped everyone in the area. Jim went on to say how the chamber has come a long way since then, and it is really fun to watch it grow. He tried many different things over the years to help his business grow, but one thing remained constant - his membership to the Chamber. “If you are in business, you should be a member, he said. “They’re supporting the whole area.
Ryan Morgan started RDM Electric in Farmington in December 2009. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1994-98 with Operation Southern Watch in the Persian Gulf, he decided to pursue a career in the electrical field. Ryan received his Associates degree from Kennebec Valley Community College in IEET (Industrial Electrical and Electronic Technology), and went on to work with

D
o you enjoy the company of fellow show car and bike enthusiasts? Do you enjoy riding with a large group of motorcyclists through the western mountains? Or maybe you’d like to try your chances at the card table for a “Texas HoldEm night? If any of these sound like a good time to you, then we invite you to participate in the 5th annual End of Summer Hoorah being held at the Franklin County Fairgrounds in Farmington on August 27, 28 and 29. 2010 promises to be our best year yet! We’ve made some changes and have included a Friday night event which will be the Chamber’s Texas Hold-Em night starting at 6 p.m. in the Beano Building at the fairgrounds! Also different this year will be the motorcycle event being held on Saturday. The Chamber plans on starting its 165-mile Raffle Run at 9 a.m. from the Fairgrounds after breakfast (arrive early, $$), but taking a much different route through the western mountains of Maine and into New Hampshire and back. Upon returning, there will be a pig roast, music
and cash bar to sit and reflect upon the day’s event. We then look forward to Sunday’s return of the car and bike show (9 a.m.-2 p.m.) complete with great food, music, awards, and more at the fairgrounds. Three days, three different events, something for everybody! All events are open to the public, events run rain or shine. Pig Roast is also open to the public with tickets available soon! Car/bike show preregistration encouraged for a discount. Goody bags given to the first 100 participants. Event t-shirts are available to the general public by pre-order. Financial supporters are needed and welcome for this great weekend event, just contact the Chamber office for details. Tickets are on sale now for the Texas Hold ‘Em Tourney – stop by the Chamber’s Welcome Center in Farmington at 248 Wilton Road, e-mail info@franklincountymaine.org or call 207-778-4215 for more information. When he decided to launch his own business, one of the first things he did was join the Franklin County Chamber. “I grew up in a family that was very community service oriented,â€? he said, “and I believe in the good work that the Chamber does for the community. I see them handing out food baskets to people Ryan Morgan during the holidays, and I just want to be a part of that.â€? Along with the work in the community that the Chamber does, Ryan appreciates the strong voice that they have for multiple businesses in the area. He tries to attend all the Business After Hours events so he can network with other small business owners. Ryan believes in buying local and purchases his supplies locally whenever possible. After just over 6 months on his own, he reports that people have been very receptive and happy with the work he’s done. In addition to his Chamber membership, he is also active as a Farmington selectman, Mt. Blue TV board member, 82 High Street board member, and member of the VFW. Ryan would like to thank his family for all their support while getting his own business up and running. He lives in Farmington with his wife Iris who works at the hospital, 6 year old daughter Kyla, and 18-month-old son Kelton.
