Holiday plants rooted in tradition

(ARA) - Each Christmas decorated trees, twinkling lights and familiar carols take center stage in creating a festive holiday atmosphere. Certain plants play key roles as well: church altars banked with poinsettias, mistletoe hung over doorways, and holly adorning floral arrangements. Ironically, the histories of most Christmas plants have pagan roots (pardon the pun!), some dating back to the druids in the 13th and 14th centuries. Yet over the centuries they evolved into beloved Christian symbols. Dr. Charles Aling, professor of history at Northwestern College, St. Paul, Minn., explains that Christmas plants such as holly, ivy, mistletoe and poinsettia became Christmas favorites due in part to their bright colors and evergreen properties. “Both the pagans and Christians saw these plants as bringing light and color into the season.” Holly —Holly’s ability to look good in both winter and summer certainly helped its position in folklore, Aling explains. Representing immortality and seen as a good omen, holly was considered sacred by the ancient Romans and used as a gift during the festival of Saturnalia. Gradually, holly became a Christmas symbol as Christianity became the dominant religion. Because the holly leaf has sharp, pointy edges, Christians see the holly representing Jesus’ crown of thorns and the red berries representing the blood He shed on the cross. Ivy —Aside from the familiar carol, “The Holly and the Ivy,” the

ivy vine doesn’t have quite the Christmas tradition as mistletoe and holly, Aling says. It was associated with Bacchus the Roman god and thought to bring good luck, fun and ecstatic happiness. Because ivy symbolized prosperity and charity, it became associated with Christmas, a time to celebrate the rich rewards of life yet remember the less fortunate. Mistletoe — Legend explains that the tears of Scandinavian goddess Frigga saved her son after he was shot with an arrow made of mistletoe. When she ordered mistletoe never again be used to harm others, she made it a symbol of peace and love. It was also hung over doorways to ward off evil and bring happiness, health and good luck, and kissing under the mistletoe was thought to increase the possibility of marriage in the upcoming year. Poinsettias — “While most Christmas plants date back several hundred years to Europe and the Mediterranean,” Aling points

After the Spanish conquest and the introduction of Christianity, the poinsettia found a place in Christmas rituals. The legend of the poinsettia tells of a poor village boy in Mexico who wanted to give the Holy Child a gift, but had no money. In desperation, he picked some weeds on his way to church to leave as his gift. He prayed to God to help him show his love and God answered by turning the weeds into a beautiful star-shaped flower with bright red leaves. The poinsettia has been a Christmas symbol ever since signifying how Jesus meets the needs of His believers. Even though most Christmas plants are short-lived, basic care helps them last through the holiday season. A poinsettia can last for weeks beyond the holidays when placed in indirect sunlight at least six hours a day,” he explains. “Keep it away from cold drafts and excessive heat. Water when it feels dry, and after the blooming season use an all-purpose fertilizer once a month.” Beilby adds that the belief that poinsettias are poisonous is a misconception. Scientific evidence of the plant’s safety is ample and well documented. Poinsettias are actually helpful in removing pollutants from indoor air.

s you trim the tree and deck the halls, have you ever wondered why you are doing it? How did these customs get started and what do they symbolize? Although your holiday decorating taste may not reflect your Grandmother’s or even your Mother’s style, tradition is part of this holiday, more than any other. So before you hang your chili pepper string of lights and your fiber optic Christmas tree, consider the history of the Christmas tree and the ornaments we hang on it. Perhaps no symbol of the season is more widely recognized than the Christmas tree. Queen Victoria’s German husband, Prince Albert, is credited with introducing the Christmas tree to England in the 1840s. Wanting to emulate the royal family, people began to adopt the custom and it soon became popular. Some historians trace the origin of the Christmas tree to an even earlier period. Even before the Christian era, trees and boughs were used for ceremonies. Egyptians, in celebration of the winter solstice, brought green date palms into their homes as symbols of life triumphing over death. Likewise, when the

Romans observed the feast of Saturn, part of the ceremony was the raising of an evergreen bough, and centuries ago in Great Britain, the Druids used evergreens during mysterious winter solstice rituals. The Druids considered holly and mistletoe symbols of eternal life and placed evergreen branches over doors to keep away evil spirits. The urge to add sparkle to the tree started early -- Martin Luther, in the 16th century, is credited as being the first person to put candles on a tree, and the first electrically lighted Christmas tree appeared in 1882. In Victorian times, people had already started decorating trees with cakes, fruit and small gifts that were hung on the branches with ribbon. In 1880, Woolworth’s first sold manufactured Christmas tree ornaments, and they caught on very quickly. Grill up a feast this holiday season (ARA) - About 85 percent of American households own a grill, and use them more than 3.1 billion times annually. In fact, more and more people are grilling all year round, and make good use of their grills during the holiday season. Fortunately, today’s grills are designed to handle the gourmet requirements of a holiday feast. Thanks to the proliferation of cooking shows and celebrity chefs, home cooks are getting more creative, experimenting with less traditional grilled foods and more varied ingredients. The following recipe from the grilling experts at Char-Broil is a good example of a dish that is simple to prepare, yet a little exotic -- perfect for holiday gatherings.

Grilled Duck Breast with Orange Coriander Glaze 4 boneless skinless duck breasts 2 teaspoons vegetable oil

3/4 cup orange juice concentrate Juice of one orange Minced orange zest from 1/2 orange 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar 4 teaspoons honey (more if necessary) 1 teaspoon ground coriander 2 teaspoons cornstarch dissolved in 1 tablespoon water Mix half of orange zest, oil and duck breasts. Let marinate in refrigerator for 4 to 24 hours. In a small saucepan, mix remaining zest, orange juice, orange juice concentrate, vinegar, honey and coriander. Bring to a boil and add dissolved cornstarch. Bring back to a boil (it will thicken at the same time). Remove from heat and let cool. The glaze can be made one or two days in advance. Season duck breasts liberally with salt and black pepper. Grill over high heat. As soon as the duck breast is turned the first time, bush a thick layer of

ransforming your house for the holidays with a few festive touches is easy and fun, according to two interior designers who shun store-bought decorations in favor of individual creativity. “Drape folds and swags of sheer bridal voile down a stairway banister,” suggests Mary Abshier of Mary Abshier Interiors, Houston, Texas. For banisters that abut a wall at the top of the stairwell, mount a translucent green 3M spring clip with Command Adhesive to the wall next to the banister. Attach the fabric to the clip and then twist the fabric around the banister making abundant swags down the staircase. For added color, intertwine the voile with wonderful brightly colored ribbon or a garland of greens. At the bottom of the stairs, secure the fabric to the banister with a red or green bow and cut off the excess voile. The family of 3M self-adhesive devices are as helpful to the busy holiday decorator as Santa’s elves are to him. Almost any flat surface is game for the hooks, clips strips and hangers to do their work. They leave no holes, scars or traces of residue once they’re removed and can be used again year after year, with Command adhesive replacement strips. Abshier suggests mantles can also be decorated with voile or an alternative fabric. This may be a great way to use leftover material from a slipcover, pillow or drapery project to create a custom, coordinated look in family or living room. Some other ideas involve using a crocheted piano scarf for Christmas or Hanukkah or colorful African-style print cloth, for Kwaanza. To prevent the fabric from slipping, affix a horizontal row of 3M spring clips to the wall just above the mantle at intervals of from five to eight inches and secure the fabric in the clips. Spring clips come in translucent blue, green and lavender as well as solid white.
