C a rd iov a s c u la r d i s e a s e – which includes heart disease a nd st roke – st i l l cla i m s t he l ives of one i n t h ree American women. In Maine, ca rdiovascu la r diseases account for almost 29 percent of all female deaths. However, thanks to the American Heart A s soc iat ion’s G o Re d For Women campaign, women’s hea r t hea lt h is improv ing. Harvard Pilgrim Health Care is proud to be the statewide Maine Goes Red sponsor. For more than 10 years now, women have proudly worn red, shared stories of survival and begun to understand the truth about their hearts. As we approach National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 6, we are asking that you join us to continue the fight against heart disease and stroke in women. Even with all the increased awareness and research, our
work is far from done on this vital health issue. More women d ie of hea r t d isea se t ha n the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. But the strength of mothers, sisters, daughters and friends fighting side by side is more powerful than any killer. Eighty percent of cardiac events in women may be prevented if they make the right choices for their hearts, involving diet, exercise and not smoking Please join t he cause by registering at GoRedForWomen.org. You will receive a red dress pin to wear and show your support, plus all the resources you need to get heart-healthy. And don’t forget to mark your calendars for National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 6, and Wear Red to support hearts everywhere. We hope the knowledge and
tools from Har vard Pilgrim a nd t he A mer ic a n He a r t A ssociat ion w i l l i nspi re women throughout Maine to be as healthy as they can be in 2015 and beyond. To get involved locally, contact your loca l A merican Heart Association office at 207-8795700 or visit www.heart.org/ maine. There are so many ways to a healthy, happy heart and we are thrilled to partner with the American Heart Association to help get you there. Regards, Eric H. My story begins on March 29, 2002. On my 22nd birthday, I was rushed to Central Maine Me d ic a l C enter w it h a n extremely elevated heart rate. The nurse actually thought that the machine that was taking my blood pressure and heart rate was broken. Once it was found that the readings were true, a doctor ca me i nto t he room a nd expla ined w it hin seconds that he was going to inject medication that would stop my heart and, when it started back up, it should be in a correct rhythm. That was the day my fight with heart disease started. I always knew growing up that something was different with me, not being able to
keep up in gym class. It was s u g ge s t e d s e v er a l t i me s t hat I had ast hma. I have suffered from many heart arrhy t hmias since t hen. I had my first heart surger y in Portland, Maine in 2003. Since then, I have had seven m or e a t C e nt r a l M a i n e Medical Center and two in Boston. Liv ing w it h hea rt disease has affected my life in many ways. I am not able to have children due to my health problems, I have been out of work for some time now, and I am not able to do a lot of the things that I enjoyed doing when I was younger. Although my health does not improve but only gets worse, I still have not given up hope. New med icat ions a nd technology come out every year thanks to all the money r a i s e d by t he A mer ic a n Heart Association. Because

American Heart Association Go Red For Women

What is Go Red For Women? Women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement since 2004. And we’ve made a difference! More than 620,000 lives have been saved. But the fight is far from over. Each year, 1 in 3 women die of heart disease and stroke. But we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Using the American Heart Association’s research and resources Go Red For Women educates and connects hundreds of thousands of women and offers tools to help women make lifesaving choices. These choices protect their health and reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke.
With the right information, education and care, heart disease in women can be treated, prevented and even wiped out.

We wear the red dress as a symbol for Go Red and our heart, but we need to love the woman inside the dress and put our health first so we can continue to be there for our families.
Tending to the needs of her entire family first, super mom Julia ignored the warning signs and symptoms she was experiencing, leading up to a heart attack. Today, she makes health and physical activity a priority - with her family – and understands the importance of putting herself first, too.

February is National Women’s Heart Disease Awareness Month
Did You Know? Heart Disease is the number one killer of women in America. At CMHVI, we encourage all women to participate in the national Go Red For Women campaign and wear red – a symbol of unity against the disease – on February 6. So, dust off those ruby red slippers, pick up that little red dress you left at the dry cleaners, or just throw on an old red sweatshirt and join the cause! But wearing red is not the only way to show your support…
Reduce your Risk, Recognize the Symptoms • Chest pain or discomfort • Unusual upper body discomfort • Shortness of breath • Breaking out in a cold sweat • Unusual or unexplained tiredness • Lightheadedness or sudden dizziness • Feeling sick to the stomach If you experience these symptoms, call 9-1-1 immediately. Not all of the symptoms listed occur in every heart attack.
At Central Maine Heart & Vascular Institute, we offer a comprehensive program of advanced cardiovascular care, including an integrated outreach and primary prevention program, diagnostic services, and cardiac interventional services. We want you to live a happy, healthy life. If you’d like to better understand your own risks for heart disease, schedule an appointment with one of our specialists by calling 207-760-6622.
Knowledge is Power:
Take Charge of your Health In the past, heart disease has been predominantly associated with men. However, cardiovascular disease claims the lives of nearly 500,000 women each year. Here are three important facts everyone should know about women and heart disease: • Heart disease strikes more women than men. • Heart disease is more deadly than all cancers combined. • The signs of heart attack in women may differ from those experienced by men.
