The Lodge Look :

T

here is a good deal of emphasis today on an outdoors, rustic approach to decorating, commonly referred to as “the lodge look” or “Adirondack style.” The feel of these styles recalls summer camps spent by a lake or a winter mountain retreat; there are memories of waking to the songs of chirping birds and falling asleep with only the light of the campfire. Few of us have the luxury of time or money to retreat to the piney mountain or lakeside lodges whenever the mood strikes. However the thoughts of furnishing a room in this style are intriguing. Chesapeake Wallcoverings has introduced its High Country Lodge book to bring this decorating theme to your home.

Wallpaper and accessories help capture the look you want

The first step is to establish a motif, such as fishing or camping and then work with that motif to bring together other decorative features. A wallpaper border is a good start when looking for a theme because it serves as an inspiration for accessorizing and can be easily changed when a new decorating scheme strikes your fancy. Flea markets and rummage sales supply many useful items. Old blankets are great as throws or winter curtain panels; colorful vintage 1950s printed tablecloths can be used for quick pillow covers or window toppers; and fishing lures, hunting caps and boating gear, grouped as wall art or on a display shelf, make interesting conversation starters. It is surprising how many of these items can be found at bargain prices. The lodge look has much to do with color and texture. Every spot in nature has a unique color palette. These are the dark greens and browns of the forest, but also the lighter hues of golden grass and seaside retreats, of ivory birch, the silver grays of aged barn board and sage. Green is important in this décor and nothing brings the outdoors inside better. Green will make other colors in the room shine. A dark hunter green wall covering of faux leather paired with a red Persian rug and a watch plaid fabric will welcome anyone into the room. However for tranquility and serenity, decorate with neutrals or soft colors -- buttery creams matched with a soft olive; the retro-inspired avocado green looks wonderful when combined with a wallpaper border of baskets and pottery. A mountain lake border scene of blue skies, green pines, moose and loons make a wonderful theme for the combination of blues and greens. Intermix any and all natural, unpainted woods. Mission or Arts and Craft style furniture blends well with this look because of its straight lines and its design credo of form following function. Wicker, unpainted or protected with a sealer, is classic. Twig furniture, inspired by 18th century

English garden furniture, can be romantically rustic, but try it as an accent at first, such as a side chair or a table; these pieces are not always comfortable. There should be minimal detailing in the large pieces, but worn finishes work well. Use old trunks and stacked vintage suitcases as coffee or side tables. This gives a dual purpose of horizontal surfaces for display and hidden storage. Don’t have a lot of great wall art? Buy an old frame at a garage sale or flea market and hang it up. The texture of the frame will often stand alone. If wooden, paneled walls are desired but too expensive, try a wallcovering designed to look like old barn boards. Hang the paper horizontally under a chair rail on a short wall to visually lengthen it, or use on the fifth wall, the ceiling. Mix pottery with baskets, old books and candlesticks. Assemble family photographs, especially black and white or sepia tones, around a twig-framed or bark mirror, each photo adorned with simple found twigs. Add some rustic wall sconces and a small room seems larger and a focal point is created in a large room. Instead of hanging a painting or print, try leaning it casually against a wall or mantle; it is easier to change out with the seasons or when a different one catches your eye. Consider exposed beams as a perch to showcase family collections or hang dried flowers or herbs. Even large items, such as a canoe, can be hung for view. Rooms that are not symmetrical lend themselves the best to unexpected and unusual treatments. Be careful, though, not to overdo those finishing touches, and remember that a well-decorated home balances highly decorated areas with plain, simple spaces, such as a bowl of fruit on an otherwise unadorned table. It is important that no one space dominates or competes with another; good design knows when to stop. There are a variety of themes available for bringing the outdoors into the home in Chesapeake Wallcovering’s High Country Lodge. Look for it and many other ideas on decorating at your local wallpaper dealer’s showroom and at the company’s Web site, www.ChesWall.com. (ARA)

Welcome to the world of unfinished furniture

Coffee tables come in many styles and Pri¢e$

When you purchase unfinished furniture, you can: 1. SEE WHAT YOU ARE GETTING.

BY FRANCES INGRAHAM c. Albany Times Union

Does the wood have knots, discoloration, obvious weak points or other defects? With finished furniture, you would not know, until your new piece of furniture began to fall apart. Unfinished manufacturers must use a higher grade lumber in furniture production, because they know they can not “hide” such defects under a finish,

ALBANY, N.Y. — Coffee tables, which have been in use for centuries, are both useful and enhancing to a room. The coffee table originated shortly after the mid-16th century, when tables were abundant in various forms for various purposes. Originally, the name applied to any small, light occasional table, later known as nesting tables, which were

brought out for tea or ashtrays when needed. By the mid-1940s progressive American furniture manufacturers began using the coffee table as a vehicle for novel and experimental designs, according to “The Encyclopedia of Interior Design” (1997, Fitzroy Dearborn). By the 1950s, the coffee table had become a standard item of furniture marking the center point of the seating area and a place to display the social accoutrements of the modern home. Today, any low table that is placed directly in front of a sofa is called a coffee table. Styles range from two small square tables placed almost side-by-side, to massive rectangular, square, oval and round shapes, to works of sculpture. Materials range from glass, wood, metal and stone to the new polyresins. The shortage of timber following 1945 inspired furniture designers to use glass or tray tops. New coffee tables can cost hundreds of dollars or more, depending on the size, material and style, but just about any find can serve as a coffee table, from old trunks — great for storing games, toys and magazines — to a large ottoman with a tray and some coffee table books on top. You might even enlarge the surface of a trunk, pedestal, piece of sculpture or driftwood by adding a wider, thick piece of glass. The glass will both show off and protect the base. Another quick fix is to find an old round or square dining-room table (preferably not an antique) and cut the legs down, so that the table top is at the desired height. There are no rules when it comes to selecting a coffee table, other than to know what size you need. Purchase or make a very sturdy model if you have children or do a lot of work at the table.

2. SAVE MONEY

Oftentimes, purchasing a piece of furniture and finishing it yourself is less costly than purchasing a comparable already finished piece of furniture. However, less money does not mean less quality. An oak end table can be purchased unfinished, at less cost, but will still have the same (or better) quality materials and craftsmanship, than it’s finished counterpart.

3. MATCH YOUR DECOR

The selection of stain and paint colors is enormous and easily accessible. You will be able to select one, at your local hardware store or paint center, which will match your existing furniture and woodwork. You can finish your furniture item in the exact hue, to match drapery, carpet, or other furnishings.

4. GET A BETTER FINISH

The spraying process, in the factory, may have

missed spots or been applied unevenly to finished furniture. This will begin to show up in a few months, as you notice your furniture begin to blister and peel. When you finish your own furniture, you can be assured that the finish is applied evenly and thoroughly, for a durable, long life of use.

5. CUSTOM FINISH YOUR FURNITURE

Of course, finishing furniture is an enjoyable and relaxing hobby shared by millions of people. There is a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, that comes with finishing your own furniture. When friends ask about it, you can say, “I did that myself!” Put to use all your creative ideas, from a simple stain and varnish finish to a more elaborate tole-painted or stenciled finish. Furniture, custom finished by you, is the family heirloom of future generations.

Got space?

(ARA) - Dorothy had it right when she said, “there’s no place like home.” Whether you call it nesting, settling in or cocooning, home is where the heart is. These days, more and more folks are fixing up their homes. Plans to spiff up the nest often include a game room, where family and friends come together for activities that transcend gender, age or ability. This year, make room in your life for pool and room in your home for a pool table. For some folks that could mean building a new home or an addition, but for most of us it is time to be creative and make use of existing space. The timing for home improvement couldn’t be better and statistics bear this out. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) finds that home improvements are holding steady or experiencing less of an impact from the economic downturn than other industries. NARI’s executive vice president, Kevin McNulty, states, “Consumers are taking advantage of low interest rates to reinvest in their homes.” In the past, homeowners may have

remodeled to make the property more attractive to a potential buyer. Events such as September 11, 2001 and the current economic climate make people want to stay closer to home and change their living space to fit their lifestyle, needs and personal entertainment preferences. “Remodeling projects that incorporate game rooms are quite popular,” McNulty adds, “A full-service contractor, many with designers on staff, can assist in planning ahead to be sure that a billiard table -- that is to be the centerpiece of the room — will fit and be functional within the room’s design.” Stephen D. Ducoff, executive director of the Billiard Congress of America (BCA), agrees. “Retail and manufacturing members at our recent Trade Expo told us they are working with more contractors, designers and home owners to furnish game rooms. As a matter of fact, pool table sales indicate that more pool is played in homes while taverns and billiard rooms come in second and third respectively.” Now, how do you embark on the quest for the perfect ST game room? layout of your home and ask yourself questions about your current situation. The answers will help you to go about making room for a billiard table and other games, furniture and accessories. Has the last child left home? Are there grandkids to take care of? Has the first “real job” since college enabled you to buy that vintage fixer upper with room to pursue your passion for pool? Do you feel the need to provide your preteens and teenagers with a safe place to hang out? Before you decide which part of the house gets the billiard makeover, determine how big a game room needs to be in order to accommodate a pool table. The BCA has a handy chart on its website (www.bca-pool.com) to help you with this. Now that room size has been determined, let’s start from the bottom up. A basement can be a perfect place to work your magic. If there is no lower level, other options abound. Empty nesters might take a look at the spare bedroom down the hall. Or, consider converting the garage into your play palace. Seldom-used formal dining rooms can pull

double duty with a furniture-styled pool table that is easily converted with an easy on — easy off tabletop. Many new homes have a great room -- a large space that combines the kitchen, dining area and family room. This is an ideal location for a game room. Is your home too snug to accommodate a game room? Think outside the box (or walls) by taking it outdoors. A weather resistant, outdoor pool table on the back patio is just the answer for those living in more temperFactory ate climes. Martha Stewart is a recognized leader in home decorating. For the millions of homeowners who watch her TV shows and read her magazines looking

for new ideas and decorating advice, there’s a new way to bring Martha into the home. Martha Stewart Signature Flooring is now available at Floor Systems, in Lewiston, Maine. A visit to Floor Systems reveals an

expansive showroom area dedicated to Martha Stewart Signature Flooring. “It’s not often in retail that you see the need to dedicate floor space to a brand new line of flooring,” says Floor Systems owner Gilles Veilleux. “Martha Stewart Signature is truly unique in that her name itself implies creativity, and the line of flooring is designed with the customer in mind.” Shopping the Martha Stewart Signature displays is indeed a unique experience. It consists of three components: the color center, the idea center and the work center. Starting at the color center, the shopper is asked to consider their palette, and then prompted to choose the type of flooring that will work for

their room- carpet, wood, laminate, vinyl, or ceramic. Moving on to the idea center, the shopper can go beyond their flooring choice and see how it will work with SherwinWilliams Paints and P/Kaufman Fabrics (also both Martha Stewart Signature lines). Finally, shoppers can immerse themselves in the total Martha experience at the work center, which includes a full library of Martha Stewart decorating books and reference materials. Despite all this built-in customer convenience, the Martha Stewart Signature Flooring prices are very reasonable, says Veilleux. “This is top-of-the-line flooring fashion at price points that will surprise customers,” explains Veilleux. “There is definitely something foreveryone in this line.”

Personalize your dining space

A new approach to dining furniture is to buy pieces that coordinate but do not necessarily match. “Today’s homeowners are putting together eclectic furniture groups that don’t resemble ‘sets.’ They want their dining areas to look like they’ve evolved over time, similar to a collection of antiques,” says Mononen. “This approach gives the home a more personalized feeling.” He recommends using design details to tie a look together when mixing different pieces. For example, the leg detail on a table or chair can determine if it will coordinate with other furniture. Shapely wrought iron curves, hard-carved pedestals or straight Spartan legs will give the furniture a collective look without being exactly the same. Scale can also make a difference in creating a balanced look. For example, larger chairs should go with a larger table. Another approach to merging different pieces is to mix finishes and colors. Traditionally, designers have shied away from combining dark and light finishes. However, today’s styles encourage the mixing of contrasting finishes using similar tones and unique textures. Try using a copper-top sideboard to compliment the warm tones of a distressed pine table.

Dining chairs can be found in rattan or upholstered in leather, rich tapestries or cotton slipcovers. These hearty materials not only add elegance and style to a room setting, but they can also withstand the wear and tear of everyday use. The Arhaus Italian Mosaic dining table combines several of these natural materials. Its top is made of stone and marble mosaic tiles that sit on a handforged, wrought iron base. Mononen suggests pairing this handsome one-of-a-kind table with the Colette Leather dining chairs. “Leather is big in dining right now because it is so durable and easy to maintain,” he explains. Distressed finishes can help bring out the depth and personality of natural materials. An example is a French Cherry dining collection featuring a rich, deep finish that is the result of a labor-intensive, fifteen step antiquing process.

Old Is New Again The grace and elegance of the Victorian era are defining current dining trends. Turn-of-the-century styles are updated with a modern twist. For an interesting look, a dining table influenced by a Louis XV French antique

This year, lighting designers and manufacturers combine fashion with function to create decorative lamps and fixtures that do more than simply illuminate. Consumers, too, have seen the light — or more appropriately, the lights. Decorative sconces, chandeliers, table and floor lamps in a variety of shapes, styles and finishes elevate a room from drab to dramatic with the flick of a switch. While traditional, polished brass fixtures still form the central core of the decorative lighting business, a variety of options have become more important in recent years. “People are accessorizing their homes like women accessorize a dress,” says Larry Lauck, vice president, communications, of the American Lighting Association. “The mindset on decorative lighting has changed from thinking of a lamp as a keepsake to considering it more as a home-fashion accessory. People now buy new decorative lighting every few years to update their interior, as opposed to buying one lamp, keeping it forever and passing it down to their kids.” Stylish offerings allow consumers the opportunity to shed light on their own design personalities. Some lamps boast bases crafted to mimic the branches of a tree. Neo-classic designs, complete with acanthus leaves, ivy and fluting, remember Caesar and the Coliseum. Still others borrow their beauty from the Biedermeier style of the early 19th century for modern-day elan. Like the rest of the house, decorative lighting reflects our changing lifestyles. “There is a greater emphasis on informal style in home décor today,” says Joe Rey-Barreau, American Lighting Association Consulting Director of Education and Director of the Lighting and Design Center at the University of Kentucky. “We are seeing a promotion of that lifestyle through many trends in decorative lighting designs.” Lighting designs follow larger forces, like housing and furniture trends. Today’s new homes feature relaxed, open interiors with flowing floor plans and coordinated furniture. Decorative lighting’s brightest ideas work to illuminate these spaces. As a result, more homeowners are coordinating lamps and fixtures by room, say industry experts, creating harmonized vignettes that emphasize decorative lighting.

A space of her own

hose teenage years are a time when your young adult is yearning to express herself. She wants her own space that she can personalize and make her own. This could involve multiple body piercings, blue hair, or, if you’re lucky, just a room makeover. Here are some tips to help her put her stamp on her living space without costing a fortune.

I gotta be me Your daughter wants to show her creativity and her individuality. Accessories are a good way to jazz up a room without making a major investment or drastic changes. Decorative pillows, lamps, photo

frames and wall hangings can liven up and personalize a drab, institutional dorm room. “Think outside the box when it comes to decorating a bare, blank wall,” says Robert Kling, senior vice president of merchandising for Pier 1 Imports. “Create a collage of your favorite photos and posters using inexpensive clip frames or hang a grouping of masks, plates, or whatever you have as your own special collection.” Reading lamps not only provide all-important light for studying, but come in styles to match your young adult’s own personal style -- from trendy striped lamps to beaded lampshades to animal prints. Or go retro with paper lanterns that can be wired for an overhead light fixture.

Company’s calling Need seating? Director’s chairs fold up when not in use and are perfect for a mixand-match color scheme. For a comfy, inexpensive chair, check out the papasan. The round-cushioned, wicker-bottomed chair is the perfect place for your young adult to curl up with a book or watch television. “Our papasan chair has long been a favorite among the college crowd,” says Kling. “It’s nearly a college requirement.” Big, oversized pillows are also a great way to create extra seating at a moment’s notice -- perfect for study groups or movie night. And guests will appreciate sturdy acrylic dinnerware -- a definite step up from paper plates.

Beaded curtains are a practical, inexpensive room divider and can be used to create a separate space for people who are sharing a room or a cozy nook for studying or reading. Not to mention the “cool factor” of retro merchandise.

Get it together Organization is instrumental to your daughter’s success. Baskets make a great catchall for toiletries, hair styling products, compact disks, magazines and more. For dorm dwellers with limited drawer space, stacking baskets are great space savers that create more storage for Tshirts, socks and workout wear. Laundry can stay out of sight in a wicker hamper. “Trunks are a great storage option,” says Kling. “They can double as a table and also provide storage for bed linens and out-of-season clothes. And they can even be used as a last minute hiding place for those surprise parental visits.”

It’s back to school Many retail outlets offer special sales during the back-to-school season. Pier 1 Imports, for example, features a 15 percent discount off regularly priced merchandise to any student who shows a valid school identification card from July 26 through Sept. 29. So your young adult can feel free to express herself without breaking the bank. If you would like to contact Pier 1 Imports, call 800245-4595 or visit www.pier1.com.
