This building is more than just a fun place to go, it is also safe, functional and efficient. The building is secure with key card access needed to access certain areas of the building. To keep children from injuring themselves, all the faucets in the building use tempered water. The water temperature is set at a maximum of ninety degrees to keep little children from accidentally burning themselves. The facility was also designed to be

highly functional. The floor plan allows for the efficient movement of patients through the facility. The traditional nurses station has been replaced with new work areas where doctors and staff can collaborate on patient care while still maintaining the patient’s privacy. ho ever thought that going to the doctor’s office was fun? The staff at Pediatric Associates thinks so and so will you after visiting their new facility at 33 Mollison Way in Lewiston. Going to the doctor’s office can be a scary prospect for a child.

Even if it is only a routine check up, the children are put into a strange environment with different sounds, smells, and other children they have never seen before. As difficult as it is for children, it is worse for parents. The parents are concerned for their children and the parents have to keep the child occupied while waiting WorkMed Occupational Health Services for the doctor to see them. Pediatric Associates has fixed all of that. 77 Bates Street First though, a little history. PeLewiston, ME 04240 diatric Associates traces its roots

back almost forty years when it was started by three pediatricians in Lewiston. At the time, the East Avenue location was adequate and modern by the standards of the day. It fit the bill for what a doctor’s office should be and for many years, the building served the community well, but this was about to change. About 14 years ago the practice changed hands with two new pediatricians coming on board. A year later, Drs. George and Linda Glass joined this growing practice. It was this growing practice that convinced the Glasses to upgrade their facility.

Faced with a vibrant and growing practice that was hampered by a small and inadequate building, Pediatric Associates needed a new location. This need is what drove the search for a new home. Deciding that building from scratch was the only way to go, Pediatric Associates, together with Hebert Construction and their subcontractors, built the Mollison Way facility. The building, as impressive as it is, is only part of the equation. The other part of the equation is the human side: that is what makes the difference. For their patients, Pediatric Associates provides five physicians and three Physician’s Assistants. Together with their support and clerical staff, Pediatric Associates can SEE HISTORY PAGE 6

mong the many blessings of living in Maine is experiencing four distinct seasons: blustery springs, balmy summers, brisk autumns, and bitter winters. But, the seasons affect us more than just weather. The highest cholesterol levels are in winter, yet more heart attacks occur in spring. Suicides peak in spring and summer, and menopause peaks in spring. In men, strokes are more common in spring, yet women have more strokes in winter. If you were born in winter, you have a higher chance of epilepsy, brain cancer, schizophrenia, and bipolar disease. Yet children experience the seasons very differently. Dominated by the cycle of school and vacation, a child’s life revolves around the change of seasons more than an adult’s life of perpetual work. Seasons slowly creep along for the kids as the years fly by for their parents. For those caring for children, each of the seasons brings unique challenges and opportunities. Pediatric practitioners must adjust as the needs of children vary greatly depending on the season. More babies are born in summer. Because baby boys are more fragile than baby girls, more baby boys are conceived in autumn when conditions for fertilization are best. Conversely, more baby girls are conceived in spring. Children grow more in height in spring and summer, yet put on weight more in fall and winter. Spring, the season of rebirth, is the traditional time for spring cleaning of house and getting the kids out of the house after a long dreary winter. Kids especially get restless with spring fever. There are more accidents from bicycle and skateboarding mishaps, more poisonings from cleansers and fertilizers, and more falls from open windows. For pediatricians, spring brings mud, allergies, asthma, intestinal virus, croup, strep throat, chicken pox, RSV, colds, 3 Powderhorn Lane, Aubur n and before vaccines: measles. This is a professional, arcadesized table. While the Teen Zone is a fun place to wait, it is worthwhile to note the level of care that is available to teens and their parents.

Teenage years are a time of change— physical changes, hormonal changes, as well as a change in how teens perceive themselves.

Lewiston, Maine, Saturday, September 17, 2005

The staff at Pediatric Associates can help parents and teens deal with these changes. Family conference rooms are set up to discuss issues that are pertinent to caring for the teen. Pediatric Associates has succeeded in its mission to make their facility kid friendly. For kids it is a safe and fun place to go, and for parents, it is one less worry in caring for their kids. How much fun is going to the doctor’s office now? According to the staff, one teen was playing air hockey after all the other patients had been seen. Thinking there had been an oversight and the teen had missed the appointment, one of the staff members went to see him. It turns

en miles of wiring, one mile of baseboard, 106 doors, almost 23,000 square feet of space, and 16,000 square feet of floor tiles are impressive numbers but numbers do not tell the whole story. This building is the culmination of over five years of hard work on the part of Dr. Linda Glass, Roland Potvin, and Hebert Construction. In 13 years, the number of patients at Pediatric Associates grew from 3,000 to roughly 15,000. This five fold increase strained the limits of their East Avenue location to the breaking point. What had been adequate in the past was no longer meeting the needs of patients. Something had to be done to keep up the level of care and comfort that patients needed. In meeting this need, Dr. Linda Glass began exploring alternatives to the East Avenue location. About five years ago, she began looking at existing buildings with an eye towards converting an existing structure to meet the needs of the practice. After observing what was available and comparing that to the needs of the practice, it became evident that a new building was needed. Thus began a two and a half year project that culminated in this new facility located at 33 Mollison Way in Lewiston. Building a new facility meant a sizable investment in resources but it was an investment that Pediatric Associates was willing to make for their patients. Because they were making such a large investment, Dr. Glass and the others wanted to get it right the first time. To that end, she and Roland planned the facility from the ground up. Plans in hand, they turned to Mike Hebert and Hebert Construction to make this dream a reality. Working from their plans, Hebert Construction was able to enlist the services of an architect who then devised the final floor plan. Most customers come to Hebert with a plan but according to Mike Hebert, this was one of the most well thought out plans he had seen. In his words, “[the] Owners were extremely prepared…major part

of the success of the project. True team effort.” Once the plans were finalized, the building process commenced. Over a seven and a half month period, Hebert Construction built what amounts to a small hospital. Using medical grade construction material, they built the facility that Dr. Glass and the others had been dreaming about. One of the things that Mike Hebert is quite proud of is the fact that all the subcontracting was done by local firms. While some contractors feel they have to travel out side of the state to find qualified subcontractors, Mike knew there was a talented and extremely experienced pool to draw from within the state. What did all this planning and construction produce? Quite frankly, this effort produced one of the finest health care environments for children in this area. Let’s take a virtual tour of the facility. Walking through the doors, one is struck by the open space that abounds. Unlike the cramped and dark environment of the previous location, this place has light colors and almost boundless space. Off to the left of the entrance is one of the four waiting areas. Each

Any medical practice is more than just a new building; it is a collection of qualified and dedicated people — people who make it their business to care for patients. As Dr. Linda Glass is fond of mentioning, “Patients come first.” As proof of that

meet any challenge that presents itself.

Pediatric Associates is more than just people caring for kids—the staff has dedicated themselves to treating the entire family. Pediatric Associates can answer the anxious questions of a new parent bringing a newborn in for the first time and they can help parents navigate the rough times of raising teenagers. This ability to treat kids throughout the growing process presents the parents with a terrific opportunity. By starting their kids at Pediatric Associates early, the providers and staff will be there to observe the child growing up and be able to recommend various treatment options, nutritional solutions or anything else the child needs. In keeping with the desire to be as “kid friendly” as possible, par-

The kids can go play with safe, educational, age appropriate toys while mom and dad check in. Once in the examination room, the child can enjoy the various murals on the wall. From aquariums to fire engines, there is something for every kid. If they play their cards right, some kids can even score a ride back to the waiting room in a wagon. The older children are treated to educational video games and no television, something that should please most parents. In keeping with being kid friendly, Pediatric Associates has established the “Teen Zone.” The staff wanted to create a separate area for teens, one that would remove them from the younger kids. The teen years can be difficult and many teens do not want to

hang around with eight to 10 year old kids while waiting to see the doctor. Teens can now enjoy the use of a computer as well as an air hockey table, and not a small home version either.

Each

ho ever thought that going to the doctor’s office was fun?

The facility’s wireless computer network allows the staff to have up to the minute information on their patients.
