Why I relay I relay because I know a lot of people who have had cancer. My grandfather had colon cancer. He is a survivor. I’m very happy because I love my grandfather very much. He has taken me to see the Red Sox, visit Florida, and I love going camping with him.

I also lost a friend named Maddie who had leukemia. I met Maddie at Ca mp Sunshine, which is a camp for children w ith life threatening diseases. I also went to Camp Rainbow with her; she was a good friend and I miss her. My great-grandpa Dewey had bone cancer and died a few years ago. I loved him a lot. I used to walk to his house almost every day to visit him with my cousin Sam. Once, he brought me and Sa m to D.E.W.s Wild A nima l Kingdom. After that we went to Dutch Treat. I never got to meet my other great-grandfather because he

died of lung cancer before I was born. I really wish that I could have met him. My great-grandmother has only one kidney because she had to get her other one taken out. She had cancer in one kidney. Her husband, my great-grandfather, had prostate cancer. Luckily they both survived. My great-uncle also has prostate cancer. He is hav ing surger y tomorrow morning. My greatuncle Wayne died of leukemia. The last reason why I relay is because I had leukemia. I have a Relay For Life team named Abbie’s Avengers made up of fa mi ly a nd f riends who love me very much and want to find a cure for cancer. One of the fundraisers that I am doing is selling note cards that I designed with all proceeds going to Relay For Life. This is why I relay and I am proud that I do.

My Relay story My reason to relay is the many faces of family and friends who I see everyday and also the memories of all those we have lost to this terrible disease. Thanks to the American Cancer Society, more and more of our family members and friends are able to celebrate birthdays this year. What a wonderful gift! Resea rchers don’t have a ll t he a nswers, but t hey have made incredible strides in the past 14 years. Money raised by Relay goes to fund research, patient services, prevention and detection. I have se en f i r st ha nd how re s e a rch has helped severa l communit y members a nd I w ill a lways be

eternally grateful for the hard work our Relay committee, teams, and team members have done to raise money to fund research and help them fight their battle and have the chance to celebrate not just their birthday, but each and every day. Each team is unique in their efforts, but every team and team member are connected by a common thread which is to find a cure for cancer! Why I relay At last, Relay For Life is right around the corner. It’s been a long winter for most of us. However, cancer never takes a break. Some of us have lost loved ones over the winter season. So, now we must go through the grieving cycle again. Through Relay, it’s a healing process which helps me cope with some of the sudden losses of loved ones. There are also the ones who are in treatment. This is why I choose to fight alongside them. I give my time and money because CANCER NEVER TAKES A BREAK.

A community of survivors and caregivers The Cancer Survivors Network is an online community created by and for survivors and caregivers. Lariviere legacy continues on By Cherri Crockett Rumford Falls Times I n 19 9 7, R u m f o r d H o s p i t a l received a sizeable donation for the establishment of the Lariviere Oncology Suite. Motivated by his son’s experience with metastatic renal cancer as a young man in his 30s, Al Lariviere was determined to give back to the cancer community in his son’s memory. He was well aware that people in rural Rumford had to travel more than 40 miles to seek cancer care at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. T h r ou g h h i s a l mo s t t i r e le s s fundraising efforts, he brought oncolog y treatment direct ly to t he River Va lley communit y at Rumford Hospital. Almost singleha nded ly, he ra ised t he f unds necessar y to open the Lariviere O nc olo g y Su it e. I n 2 0 02 , he mobilized his fundraising efforts to replace the outgrown space with a much-needed, larger clinic. A l L a r i v ier e pa s s e d a w a y i n May last year follow ing a fouryea r bat t le w it h lu ng ca ncer. Consequently, he was able to gain treatment at the ver y Center he established. Recently, a gracious supporter of the suite wanted to make a donation anonymously. We’ll simply call him Paperboy.

Paperboy shared, “I suspect that w it h most of us, we ca n t hink back on people we have known who always seemed to rise above pettiness to be fair and decent with everyone. Mr. Lariviere was one of those. In many cases, we lost contact, or they passed away without them ever knowing the positives they left behind.”

Follow ing a recent donation by Paperboy to the Lariviere Oncology Suite, hospital spokesperson Jane Bubar was stumped by the identity and tracked a rather unique story down. “I’ve been in this business a long time and I’ve never seen anything like this,” noted Bubar.

“He also owned the Sunoco station at the top of Falls Hill. I used to do business there. I remember buying a pair of tires back in 1965 that he allowed me to pay $10 a week for (the total cost was probably about $50). On one occasion, I had made a payment and did not get a receipt (or lost it). The employee did not record it. W hen I talked to Mr. Lariviere about it, he said that he would take my word for it. That $10 was a day’s pay for me at that time. To this day, I can say that I told him the truth, but he certainly did not have to take my word for it.” Paperboy stated that he has been lucky in life, but has not forgotten occa sions when he st r ug g led. Paperboy stated, “I was never looking for personal recognition. The story is really about Mr. Lariviere, his spirit of giving and what he did for his community. From September 1962 until December 1964, I delivered what was then the Lewiston Daily Sun six days a week. I remember seeing Mr. Lariviere eating dinner when I would come around to collect. He was like a lot of my 60 or so other customers.
