Tips for a beautiful holiday even at the 11th hour As holiday decor springs up and seasonal tunes begin to flood the airwaves, it’s time to embrace the most wonderful time of the year. If you didn’t line up on Black Friday, and decking the halls is something you typically save for the last-minute, not to worry.

Gracious gifting

Lifestyle expert, celebrity stylist and television personality Robert Verdi shares his tips for putting together a beautiful and low-stress holiday – including his picks for great lastminute gifts that can be found at your local big box, grocery or drug store.

For someone who loves to cook, consider loading a basket with the ingredients for a favorite recipe, pretty hand towels and other kitchen goodies. Or, for the beauty-lover in your life, stock up on P&G Beauty gift sets full of must-have products from Olay, Venus, CoverGirl, Herbal Essences, Pantene and Secret to spread holiday cheer to your children’s teachers and babysitters.

Set the stage Instead of decorating your home in a sea of red and green, consider using more neutral shades like silver and burgundy. Silver is one of the easiest colors to decorate with for the holiday because it transitions seamlessly into the new year. Use mercury glass balls, silver balls and white for a festive, wintry look that you won’t tire of come Dec. 26.

Hostess with the mostest The holidays are the time of year for gatherings. If you’re attending an event, always come prepared with a small gift for your hostess. If you’re hosting, be sure to stock up on extra food and beverages for unexpected guests. To make any spread more stylish, simply arrange meats, cheeses and other small bites on slate tiles from a home store. Not only is a tile attractive and durable, but you can let guests know what delicacies they will be sampling by writing on the slate with chalk.

Being a t houg ht f u l g if t-g iver isn’t necessa r i ly about purchasing lavish, over-the-top gifts. Often, it’s best to give gifts that you know the recipient will actually use.

Pick up high-tech finds like the Olay Pro-X Advanced Clea nsing System or Crest 3D W hite 2 Hour Ex press Whitestrips for your beauty-focused friends. Best of all, these gifts are available at the stores you shop at every day, which means one less trip to the mall.

The finishing touches You don’t need to spend a fortune to put glamour into your gift wrapping. Brown craft paper makes a great holiday gift wrap because it’s earthy, inexpensive, and can be customized with ribbons, stamps or stickers. Or, add a little touch to any regular gift to make it visually appealing. For example, when you give a candle, present it with long matches and a beautiful bow. Remember, the holiday season should be a time for reconnecting with friends and family, so no gift is complete without a thoughtful handwritten note.

Last-minute shopping, decorating and entertaining have you stressed? Experts suggest shopping local for your 11th-hour needs.

Finding gifts for the impossible-to-shop-for person on your list

S

hoppi ng for hol iday g i f ts would be a lot more fun – and so much easier – if you knew exactly what you wanted to get for everyone. But there’s a good chance your list includes an impossible-toshop-for friend or family member. If you’ve struggled in the past to find the perfect gift for this person, you may have resorted to giving gift cards they applied to their everyday shopping, or asking them to give you a wish list.

Tackle those impossible-to-shopfor people on your list with the following tips:

•H ead to the public library and br ow s e t h r ou g h m a g a z i ne s that cater to his special hobbies. Pay close attention to ads and products in the articles. If you see something you don’t think he has already, make a mental note to scope out his house or work area the next time you’re visiting, just to make sure. Or chat with someone else who sha res his hobby and would know if you’ve discovered the perfect gift that he’ll use and appreciate. •G o online and visit shopping sites like CouponHeaven.com, which features hundreds of niche stores.

For exa mple, CouponHeaven. com allows you to sort shopping oppor t u n it ies by stores a nd categories, and you can browse the latest specials. You can also f ind great ideas from coupon codes and discounts posted for sites like Barnes and Noble for the book lover, Gardener’s Supply for the green thumb and even Joann Fabric for the crafty person. •T a ke her out for a w i ndowshopping experience, disguised as a walk through the mall for exercise, or as a trip to purchase gift ideas for other people on your list. Pay close attention to anything she

takes a second look at – whether it’s clothing, beauty items, household items or even exercise equipment. Ma ke menta l notes on t hose items, and either schedule a trip back to the store to purchase the item she was interested in, or head home and look the store up on CouponHeaven.com to see if any coupon codes or discounts are available for that store or item. Since she’s already invested an interest in the item, you will know it will be enjoyed and used after she unwraps it during the holiday season. • I f t he person on you r ha rdto-shop-for list lives far away, prevent i ng you f rom look ing

Check out his postings on social networking sites to see if he’s mentioned any interests you could follow up on. Paying attention is key to finding the per fe c t g i f t, so ma ke note s whenever you can. Don’t delay in trying these holiday gift idea finding tips, because the earlier in the year you start, the more ideas will be presented to you. Giving green: Natural ways to spread holiday cheer The holidays are a time for celebrating, reflecting on the past year and exchanging gifts with friends and family. However, unique and meaningful ideas can be a daunting task. Gifts that keep giving and growing are a perfect solution. Plants are not just beautiful, but also cheer up any space and even improve air quality in a home or office space.

When gifting plants: Give care: Always include care instructions for the plant gift. Even the most experienced indoor plant grower appreciates a little help. Most live goods come with suggested light feeding and watering recommendations. If t he pla nt selected does not have these care instructions, ask before leaving the nursery so the recipient can keep this lovely gift green.

Customize the plant to the person: Flowers, succulents, cacti, tropica ls a nd even bulbs ca n ma ke great presents. The varieties and combinations are as endless as the personalities on your gift list. It is important to match the plant to the recipient. For instance, a plant needing daily watering would not make a good gift for a constant traveler. Instead, give t hem an interesting cactus or succulent, which needs less frequent care. For an artistic friend, tr y a terrarium that can be customized to their tastes. The more sophisticated giftee may appreciate a colorful and delicate orchid. For those w ith asthma or allergies, pla nts li ke pa lms, peace li lies

and ferns do an excellent job of improving air quality and filtering out toxins.

holiday cheer. Poinsettia, amaryllis and Christmas cactus are seasonal favorites. Plants make excellent gifts and will be a reminder of the good times you shared.

Containers make a difference: Those boring, plastic pots that house most plants are not ver y attractive or personal. Pop your plants into colorful ceramic, glass, wood or even metal containers for a more interesting and personal touch. Inex pensive ter ra cotta pots can be painted in bright or met a l l ic-c olore d pa i nt , l a r ge coffee cups as containers can add a quirky element or baskets can be lined with plastic and used to hold small pots. W hen repotting plants yourself, make sure to use a high-quality potting mix such as Miracle-Gro Potting Mix or Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Potting Mi x. A lso, keep in mind that specialty plants like cacti, African violets and orchids may per for m better in specia l potting mixes. W hen in doubt, ask the nurser y for recommendations. For presentation, wrap foil, paper or cellophane around the outside of the container and use fabric bows or raffia to add a finishing touch.

Plants at the party: Little gifts from nature go a long way in spreading the holiday cheer to friends, family and neighbors. When hosting a party, offer little mementos for your guests to take home. Try a small terra cotta pot pa inted gold a nd pla nted w it h rosemary or thyme and tied with a lovely ribbon. Or, maybe sma ll, colorf ul pots filled with soil and a bulb to add a pop of spring to the winter months. Add a photo of the f lower your guest can expect and directions on forcing the bulb to the gift tag. Whether paying a call on friends or attending a party, host or hostess gifts are another fun way to spread
