Promising newcomers: Sophomores - Mary Kate Masters (5-7), Jaclyn Masters (5-7), Emily Hartnett (5-6); Freshmen Ashlee Arnold (5-7), Kate Sawyer (5-7). Outlook: The Red Eddies graduated four veteran hard-working players that helped EL be the defensive team it was

last year in winning the KVAC title. EL still returns All-Conference picks Prue (14.5 ppg), Cummings (12.5 ppg) and Lally (9 ppg). The bench is less experienced, and EL will have work to do to match the defensive play of last year. EL should still be a formidable club and be in the hunt for a tourney spot. Coach’s comment: “The KVAC South is absolutely loaded this year. Every team is better, and we have added two games with Messalonskee to our very difficult schedule. We will need to play great defense every night, and our young players will need to grow up in a hurry for us to even contend with most of the teams on our schedule.” — Coach Craig Jipson.

BOYS’ TRACK Coach: Ryan Laroche (6th year) Last year’s record: 33-2 Returning letter winners: Seniors — Jon Ford (throws), Ben Denison (throws), Dexter Forbes (sprints, throws), John Barbossa (distance), Tyler Shennett (sprints, hurdles); Juniors — Mike Lucas (hurdles, sprints), Taka Ranucci (sprints, jumps), Tim Clark (sprints, vault), Faisal Noor (distance), Ken Romero (sprints, hurdles), Justin Forbes

Outlook: Two starters remain from the Red Eddies’ first regional championship team since 1957, but they remain one of the favorites in the KVAC South. Philbrook is one of the top big men in the state. Iman will move from the point to the off-guard spot. Leary saw time off the bench as a sophomore. Emerson, a transfer from Lewiston, brings reinforcements to the backcourt. Coach’s comment: “The key is going to be how well our role players step in.” — Coach Mike Adams

Yusuf Iman

James Philbrook

(sprints, hurdles); Sophomores — Gage Clavet (sprints, jumps), Bryan Ring (sprints, jumps). Key losses: Brandon Gruver, Jake Dubois, Josh Clark, Buddy Foss, Grady Burns, Chris Caiani, Bruce Gerry. Promising newcomers: Seniors — Sadam Abdi (distance), Jeremy Theriault (distance); Junior — Ryan Farrisey (sprints, jumps); Sophomores — Nathan Blais (sprints, jumps), Nathaniel Hernandez (sprints, jumps); Freshman — Connor Harris (sprints, jumps). What to expect: There is a lot Jeremy Theriault

of talent missing on this team from a year ago, and high-end talent at that. Adding Abdi and Theriault give the Eddies one of the best distance teams they’ve had in years indoors, and the sprint and jump teams are deep. EdwardLittle ought to be in the conversation among the top KVAC teams again, but how far this group goes is dependent upon how well the younger and less-experienced athletes adapt to competition. Coach’s comment: “The returning athletes are all very hard workers and are some of the most coachable athletes I have ever worked with. I’m very excited about this upcoming season.” — Coach Ryan Laroche

Coach: Craig Latuscha (5th year) Last year’s record: 3-15-0 Returning letter winners: Seniors — Henry Moniz (D), Austin Polisky (F), Mat Gordon (F/D); Juniors — Cody Russell (F), Dylan Nadeau (F), Logan Pushard (F), Sack Leblond (F), Cam Bennett (D), Rich Belanger (G); Sophomores — Travis Landry (D), Brady Lare (D), Ben Johnston (F), Alan Nelson (G), Chane Cloutier (G). Promising newcomers: Seniors — Dylan Pomerleau (D); Sophomores — Jared Pelletier (F), Daniel Poisson (F), Tori Couture (F); Freshmen — Drew Lupardo (F), Matt Berube (D), Trevor Haley (D), Brendon Pelletier (F). What to expect: The third year of a big rebuild is starting to pay off at Edward Little. Last year the team showed glimpses of contending talent at the tail end of the season, and most of the squad returns, and is still on the younger side. With a few more wins this season, the engine may start to chug toward a playoff berth in the next year or two.. Outlook: “With a positive attitude, strong work ethic and the will to do whatever it takes, the program will be more competitive and hopes to sneak into the playoffs.” — Coach Craig Latuscha

Coach: Dan Campbell (first year) Returning letter winners: Girls: Seniors - Hanna Mogensen, Katie Williamson; Junior - Marie Dufresne-Dixon, Emily Ranucci; Sophomores - Maddie Williamson, Jordan Tate. Key losses: None. Promising newcomers: Girls: Rebecca Barton, Lauren Bennett; Boys: Nathan Mulligan, Zachary Tannenbaum, Scott Morrow. Outlook: Campbell, the longtime cross country coach, hopes to start rebuilding the Nordic ski tradition at EL. He begins with an experienced girls’ team. The boys return after essentially being dormant for a year. Coach’s comment: “We’re enlisting the help of the YMCA and trying to bring back Edward Little as one of the top cross country ski programs in the state of Maine. It’s just going to take some time.” — Coach Dan Campbell

Coach: Tara Eretzian (sixth year) Returning letter winners: Boys: Seniors - Branden Lever, Clark Chamberlain, Tom Lynch; Junior - James Jackson; Sophomores - Ben Bowles, Jesse Williams, Dylan Newell. Girls: Senior - Emily Blackwood; Juniors - Megan Howes, Jen Rioux; Sophomores - Phoebe Chamberlain, Nika Faulkner, Hannah Fournier. Key losses: Boys: Mitch Snowe. Promising newcomers: Boys: Freshman - Nick Cote. Girls: Freshmen - Allarie Lever, Lexi Clavet, Avery Chisholm. Outlook: Snowe was the only significant loss for a boys’ team that eyes its third consecutive Class A alpine crown. The girls tied Mt. Blue for the giant slalom state title and have a proven leader in Blackwood. Coach’s comment: “The boys are geared up and ready to make another run at the championship, and the girls are fired up and determined.” — Coach Tara Eretzian

What to expect: For the first time in a while, the Eddies have a youth-driven team, and a smaller squad than in the previous year. As with most indoor track seasons, though, the talent at the top can ultimately determine how a team finishes overall, and the Eddies lost a bunch, but had plenty waiting in the wings. A solid group of seniors should help lead the team into contention again. Outlook: “With hard work and commitment, anything is possible with this group.” — Coach Rebecca Hefty

Lewiston High School BOYS’ BASKETBALL Coach: Tim Farrar (2nd year) Last year’s record: 2-16 Returning letter winners: Seniors — Peter Blais (5-9 guard), Ronnie Turner (6-2 forward), Matt Beauparlant (5-9 guard); Juniors — Mekae Hyde (5-10 guard), Chris Paine (6-4 center). Key losses: Omar Mohamed (center), Chuck Faletra (guard).

Promising newcomers: Senior — Trey Ouellette (5-10 guard); Juniors — Alex Chicoine (6-4 forward), Abdi Osman (6-2 forward); Sophomore — Corbin Hyde (6-0 forward). Outlook: The Blue Devils hope to continue to improve as the year unfolds. They hope Turner, their top scorer last year, can return from a broken ankle sustained during football season by mid-Jan-

uary. Blais, Mekae Hyde, Beauparlant and Ouellette, a transfer from Poland, form what sould be an improved backcourt. Farrar expects them to be strong defensively. If they can develop a consistent offense, they could surprise. Coach’s comment: “We’re very different than we were last year. I think we’re going to be better defensively, overall.” — Coach Tim Farrar

Promising newcomers: Junior - Atong Reyak (6-2 center), Lauren Eldridge (5-5 guard); Sophomores - Kenzie Sullivan (5-6 guard), Kayla Hamel (5-6 guard), Dani Estes (5-6 guard). Outlook: The Blue Devils lost key components from last year. Archibald and Turcotte graduated while a number of others didn’t return. That leaves Lewiston with another young squad and many players stepping into larger roles.

Kailey Martin

The seniors did see action last year and showed promise. Ball handling and turnovers were a factor last year and could be again as the young Blue Devils get acclimated to the varsity level. Coach’s comment: “We expect to play hard every minute of every game. We want improvement in all areas of play. We expect to end the season competitively with respect. We know how hard it is to win in the KVAC and are looking to upset as many teams as we can.” — Coach Mike McGraw

Good luck, Blue Devils! TRACK Coach: Dave Castro (1st year) Last year: Boys - 3rd at KVACs Returning letter winners: Boys: Seniors — Derek Roy (jumps, pole vault); Faisal Abdillahi (distance), Cam Fillion (jumps, sprints), Tyler Roy (throws). Promising newcomers: Boys: Senior — Chris Gagne; Junior — Elliot Chicoine (throws). Outlook: A new coach and a new method to the Blue Devils’ madness may create some growing pains this season, but look for the team to be competitive, especially the boys, by the time the conference meet rolls around. There are more athletes out for the team this year, and the girls’ team is building a solid foundation for the future. Coach’s comment: “We have good numbers, but it’s going to be tough to challenge for anything this year.” — Coach Dave Castro

Coach: Jamie Belleau (2ndyear) Last year’s record: 13-7-1 Returning letter winners: Seniors — Joey Fournier (F), Nick Mathon (F); Juniors — Cam Poussard (G), Jacob Lapierre (G), Sam Cloutier (F), Ben Wigant (F), Ryan Lemelin (F), Cody Dussault (D), Scott Ouellette (D); Sophomores — Desmond Gagne (F), Matt Therrien (F), Matt Melanson (D). Key losses: Robbie Leeman, Jake Brown. Promising newcomers: Juniors — Zack Parker (F), Eric Morin (F), Jon McDonough (F); Sophomores — Brandon Tiner (D), Coby Poussard (F), David Cusson (F). What to expect: The Blue Devils didn;t lose much and have a very strong nucleus returning up front. If this team can figure out how to harness its speed and figure out a way to consistently put pucks in the net, the back end, led by Poussard in net, will be tought to beat. Lewiston should be among the top contenders for the Eastern A championship — again. Outlook: “Our hope is to make the playoffs and contend for a state championship. We should be strong defensively with an all-state goaltender and a very strong group of returning lettermen on the blue line.” — Coach Jamie Belleau

Coach: Ron Dumont (Second year) Last year’s record: 18-1-2 (State champions) Returning letter winners: Seniors — Olivia Cote (D), Emilie Cloutier (F), Bianca Langelier (F), Mariah Conway (D), Kristin Lacasse (D); Juniors — Sarah Turner (G), Katie Bonawitz (F), Allison Lafreniere (D), Sara Marden (F), Tamara Roy (F); Sophomores — Marisa Zamrock (F), Ashley Chase (F). Key losses: Stephanie Belanger, Katie Cobb, Michelle Rancourt, Courtney Vallee. Promising newcomers: Freshmen — Lauren Lessard (D), Taylor Teixeira (F), Natalie Rousseau (F), Katherine Anthoine (F), Brianna Lajoie (G). What to expect: The Blue Devils are wearing a big ol’ bulls-eye on their backs this season after earning the first girls’ hockey state title last year, but this group will wear that target well. A strong group of freshmen will help offset the off-season losses, and may even add speed to the lineup. If the untested goaltending duo can come through, there’s no reason to expect anything less from this year’s edition than a shot at another title. Outlook: “We’re a different team, but we have the potential to be as good as we were last year. Our defense is pretty solid even though we lost two very good players, and we may be a bit faster this year.” — Coach Ron Dumont

Coach: Tom Stocker (first year) Returning letter winners: Seniors - Kurtis Stocker, Nate Chaloux, Michael Paradis, Ryan Profenno, Matt Reed, Paul Romanov, Brandon White; Juniors - Brett DeLawter, Colby Miles, Ryan Dubois, Ryan Pare, Michael St. Pierre; Sophomores - Jared Lussier, David Demers, Ian Roy. Key losses: David Tirabassi, Derek Morris, Teddy Blaisdell. Promising newcomers: Seniors Max Marschhausen, Kyle Rousseau; Sophomore - Matt Poto; Freshmen Dustin Morris, Alex Small. Outlook: Lewiston has its fourth different coach in five years, but the program remains on strong footing since moving to the KVAC. The Blue Devils were conference champions two years ago and runner-up last season. Kurtis Stocker and Colby Miles are returning state meet qualifiers. Overall depth and the size of the roster will make Lewiston tough to beat in regular-season meets. Coach’s comment: “We’re hoping to make a strong showing in the KVAC meet again. We’re very optimistic. We have large numbers.” — Coach Tom Stocker

Coach: Tom Stocker (first year) Returning letter winners: Seniors Megan Beliveau, Jenny Bergeron, Christy Fecteau, Sarah Pare, Heather Rodrigue, Lisa Sirois; Juniors - Abby Blaisdell, Shelby Carver, Camille Dionne, Chelsey Provencher, Katie Tirabassi. Key losses: Allysa Thomas, Amy Morin. Promising newcomers: Senior - Carley Denis; Sophomores - Kenzie Masselli, Tori White; Freshmen - Sylvia Beliveau, Brianna Brown, Jessica Beaulieu. Outlook: Lewiston continues to grow numbers. The junior class is strong, with Blaisdell, Provencher and Tirabassi all capable of scoring big points in dual meets. Beliveau and Bergeron are the captains of a deep senioor group. The addition of Denis, a former basketball player, gives the Blue Devils another exceptional athlete. St. Dom’s GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Coach: Paul Rheaume (third year) Last year’s record: 13-7, lost in Western C quarterfinal Returning letter winners: Seniors - Julia Richardson (5-5 guard), Amy Kasabian (5-4 guard), Elise Applegate (5-8 guard); Juniors - Allaina Murphy (5-11 forward), Sarah Gosselin (510 forward), Carolyn Joseph (5-9 forward), Megan Murphy (5-8 guard); Sophomore - Morgan Brown (6-0 center). Key losses: Mary Lewis (guard), Kelsey Murphy (forward). Promising newcomers: Juniors - Kearston Ciani (5-5 forward), Hannah Sterling (52 guard); Sophomores - Mary Caron (5-8 guard), Olivia Cluff (5-9 guard). Outlook: The Saints are now in the MVC and will see how they measure up. The Saints lost two veteran starters but still have Gosselin, Joseph and Murphy back that saw starting time last year. The Saints have some good size and some experience. That should make them competitive in a tough conference. Coach’s comment: “We have told the kids that being in a new conference, we need to be at the top of our game, every game.” — Coach Paul Rheaume

Outlook: The Saints should make some noise in their first season in the MVC. But while a strong halfcourt offense took the Saints to Augusta last year, they hope to return with more of a full-court attack. Defensively, they will look to apply more full-court pressure as well. Day, a transfer from Hall-Dale, will give them some points in the paint, but the plan is to run to take advantage of their speed and their outside shooting by spreading the floor. Keaney averaged 9.5 ppg as Julia Richardson a freshman and will be one of the top players in Class C. Coach’s comment: “Our whole offensive philosophy has changed. We really want to play more up-tempo and look to get out in our primary break.” — Coach Ryan Deschenes

Promising newcomers: Juniors — Isaac Reed (F), Chris McIntire (G), Josh Brown (F); Sophomores — Chris Finlay (F), Cam Hainey (F), Shawn O’Connell (D); Freshmen — Dakota Keene (F), Kyle Holtet (F). Outlook: All of the Saints’ crossover games this year are against the consensus top four in Western A after the Saints themselves moved to the east this season. There is a lot of young talent up front for St. Dom’s, but it’s experienced youth. The Saints’ speed will be a big piece of the puzzle. The team’s defense will miss Paradis, and five of the top six scorers are gone, but the Saints are still the Saints. They will challenge for the Eastern A crown. Coach’s comment: “Expect us to compete for one of the top four spots in Eastern A with Lewiston, Bangor and Waterville.” — Coach Steve Ouellette

GIRLS’ HOCKEY Coach: Don Boucher (2nd year) Returning letter winners: Seniors — Alex Landry, Meagan Poulin, Ali Desjardin; Juniors — Sophie Goulet, Alli Hebert, Lydia Martin, Anna Desjardin, Kayla Gelinas; Sophomores — Kate Lecombe, Kiana Fecteau, Nicole Keaney. Promising newcomers: Sophomore — Meghan Hargraves; Freshmen — Ann McIntire, Kayla McLellan, Emily Poulin. Outlook: Things are much brighter this season for the Saints. Once the perennial favorite in the club-level league, the Saints tumbled a bit last season in the first year of full varsity status. This season’s newcomers, along with the natural maturation last year’s young squad, should put the Saints right back in the hunt by the end of the season. Look for the Saints to challenge the top teams in the league. Outlook: The girls are primed for an outstanding season with Class B breaststroke champion Lewandowski and state and Cody Leavitt New England qualifer McGonagill leading the way. Rioux and Small’s continued improvement will help the Saints move up in the overall standings. Winstead and Robitaille each have state meet experience for the boys. Despite being one of the newAllie est and smallest swim Lewandowski programs in the state, St. Dom’s is a team on the rise. Key losses: Alex Gundersen (center), James Kimball (forward), Joel Putnam (guard). Outlook: Despite not having any seniors and losing Putnam, who transferred and figured to be their leading scorer, the Rebels should still be competitive in the MVC. A lot will depend on how well they play defensively. Vaughn, a three-year starter, Field and O’Connor are all fine rebounders. Pew is their top defender. Whitney will run the point. Key losses: Girls: Katlyn Keane; Boys: Lance Brown, John Lewis, Will Chapman, Patrick Gallagher. Promising newcomers: Girls: Juniors - Kimberlei Dean, Taylor Maines, Cheyenne Day, Melody Royer. Outlook: Mahar and Lewis lead a boys’ team that is young and small in number, but talented. Bonney is the lone girls’ skier with experience, but Speth noted that the junior newcomers are good, all-around athletes and that she is excited about the chance to work with them for two years. Coach’s comment: “All the girls have been on skis before. We have a young, developing team. We’ll see if we can do something with them.” — Coach Ann Speth

They’re trying to complete a sweep of four consecutive Class C team Alpine Samantha Largess titles, while Largess attempts to win both the slalom and giant slalom individual races for the fourth consecutive year. Lee leads a younger boys’ squad whose numbers have increased significantly. Coach’s comment: “Our focus will be on skiing fundamentals and working the fastest line at each race. The proof will be at T.J. Cowin the finish line.” — Coach Annie Reis

Coach: Mike Hathaway (second year) Last year’s record: 5-14, lost in Eastern Class A preliminary Returning letter winners: Seniors - Cam Griffin (6-3 point guard), Noah Poto (6-2 guard), Shawn Berry (6-3 forward); Juniors - Lucas Witham (6-1 guard), Tyler Allen (6-4 forward), Kyle Smith (5-11 guard); Sophomore Jordan Hersom (6-2 forward, Tyler Walton (point guard). Key losses: Doug Nash, Kolin Gauthier, Zach Caldwell. Promising newcomers: Juniors - Matt Janosco, Zach Frost, Jason Fisher, Devin Long; Sophomore - Tim Dow. Outlook: The Hornets move from Eastern A to Western B with a team that returns four starters from a brief tournament appearance. Griffin and Hersom were KVAC honorable mention all-conference, with Hersom and Allen named to the all-rookie team. Witham also made the all-star team at summer basketball camp. Poto is out until after the holidays while recovering from a torn ACL suffered over the summer. Leavitt’s youth and depth should help while the Hornets recover from a late start due to their football state title run. Coach’s comment: “Once our offense comes around and we finds ways to score consistently, I think we will be a tough matchup for a lot of teams.” — Coach Mike Hathaway

Coach: Tammy Anderson (sixth year) Last year’s record: 9-10, lost in Eastern A preliminary Returning letter winners: Juniors - Courtney Anderson (5-5 guard), Abbey Randall (5-4 guard); Sophomores - Adrianna Newton (5-9 forward), Amanda Johnson (5-9 foward), Sarah Frost (5-7 guard/forward). Key losses: Dominique Herman (guard), Hannah Whitaker (forward). Promising newcomers: Senior - Danielle Brewer (5-5 guard/forward); Sophomore - Alana Pulkkinen (5-11 forward); Freshmen - Kristen Anderson (5-7 guard), Mariah Treadwell (5-4 guard), Jenna Cote (5-7 forward), Desiree Tweedie (5-4 guard). Outlook: The Hornets went from one win two years ago to nine and a tourney berth last year. Leavitt expects to feed off that momentum in Western B this year. Anderson (15.2 ppg) and Newton (10.7 rpg) were AllKVAC picks last year. Randall is also a three-year starter while Jordan came off the bench as a freshman to bolster the post. Coach’s comment: “The team is coming off its most successful season ever while in Class A. This year, we’ve changed to KVAC B and will be looking to try and build upon the success that was started last season. We’ll be young but many of the players have a lot of varsity playing experience. The in-coming players have had success at the younger level and are excited for the upcoming season.” — Coach Tammy Anderson

Coach: Ronnie Rouillard (8th year) Last year’s record: 11-9-0 Returning letter winners: Seniors — Cody Violette (G), Eric Theiss (D), Nick Urquhart (D), Eagan Nadeau (D); Juniors — Cooper Legee (F), Josh Chouinard (F), Kevin Theiss (F), Cole Rowland (F); Sophomore — Ian Durgin (D). Key losses: Steven Rouillard, Tyler Robitaille, Scott Cloutier, Ryan Urquhart. Promising newcomers: Sophomore — Corey Mulherin (F); Freshmen — Tyler Hutchinson (F), Jacob Gladu (F), Devin McMahan (D). What to expect: The Hornets lost a lot of scoring punch to graduation, but the back end remains largely intact, giving the team hope that the playoffs are still in reach. Overall, the team will be young, and will count on younger players like Legee, Chouinard, KevinTheiss and Rowland to put the puck in the net. If the Hornets can keep the shots down and pop in a few, a .500 season with a few key wins may be enough to make the postseason. Outlook: “Our biggest goal is to be able to compete up front. We might have a chance to make it in if we find a way to put some in the net.” — Coach Ronnie Rouillard

Briana Dionne

Kylie Vincent

Coach: Christine Vincent (fifth year) Returning letter winners: Seniors — Kylie Vincent, Sarah Durgin, Theresa Waterbury, Shelby Poland, Brianna Dionne; Juniors — Jamie Thibault, Briana Stanley, Mykayla McCann, Caitlyn Parker; Sophomore — Kayla Royer. Key losses: Mariah Barrett, Maria Dumont, Molly Hibler, Britney Jones, Taylor Perry. Promising newcomers: No names given. Outlook: The coaching staff at Leavitt is optimistic this season, and they ought to be. The team has grown and matured in recent years and the influx of some solid freshmen to an already seasoned group will pay off this season. Vincent is a solid shut-down defender, and the team will look for good things from Stanley in the cage. If the Hornets can find their offense, they’ll be in the playoff conversation. Coach’s comment: “This is probably the deepest team we’ve had to date, with solid defense, girls up front who can put the puck in the net and a strong goalie.” — Coach Christine Vincent

Coach: Karly Eretzian (fourth year) Returning letter winners: Girls: Junior - Kayla Richardson; Sophomores: Kaitlyn Davis, Kendra Elie. Boys: Seniors - Brock Naylor, Luke Wiley, Sam Ricker, Brody Youland; Junior - Isaac Elie. Key losses: Boys: Tyler Elwell, Zach Renaud. Promising newcomers: None available at press time. Outlook: Leavitt won’t flaunt a big team, but the boys will have depth and experience with the four seniors. Ricker and Youland were top-10 finishers in giant slalom at last year’s state meet. Richardson is the top returnee for the girls. Coach’s comment: “If we can stay on our feet in the big meets, the boys will be very competitive. We’re working on the mental aspect and not letting the pressure and stress get to us.” — Coach Karly Eretzian

Coach: Dustin Williamson (fourth year) Returning letter winners: Girls: Seniors - Marlee Collins, Kate McKeown, Allisoin Fereshetian; Juniors- Ashley Hinkley, Morgan Hill; Sophomores - Emily Chase, Lilly Ramser, Lucy Knowlton, Taren McGray, Alana Mallar; Boys: Seniors - Ryan Fournier, Bob McKinney, Travis Adams, Dylan Chase, Cody Cyr, Derek Drouin; Juniors - Keith Lemelin, Elliott Wiegman; Sophomores - Walker Perkins, Tom Rabon. Key losses: Girls: Natasha Varney, Melissa Kelson, Laura Dacyczyn, KayAnna Beeckel; Boys: Lauren Turner, Nate Theriault. Promising newcomers: Girls: Freshmen - Brittany Tiner, Jackie Gauthier, Maddie Wiegman. Boys: Sophomore - Nate Miller; Freshmen - Tim Enos, Benjamin Ramser, Justin Bean. Overview: Leavitt lost some top skiers from the team that won the Class A girls’ title and was second in the boys’ state meet, but the depth and talent remain outstanding. Fereshetian and McGray will be top skiers for the girls. Adams, Chase, Drouin and Rabon lead the boys, who may be the Hornets’ best bet for a title this winter. Coach’s comment: “The boys will be in contention for a state title. The entire team has the experience and motivation to be at the top and to have success again this season.” — Coach Dustin Williamson

Coach: Scott Graffam (11th year) Last year’s record: 7-12, lost in Eastern A prelim Returning letter winners: Seniors —Cody Hadley (5-9 guard), Matt Verrier (6-1 forward), Asher White (6-1 forward), Nate Dubois (5-9 guard), Andrew Keniston (5-11 guard), Jake Hall (6-2 forward), Ethan Davidson (6-2 forward), Kyle Farrar (6-2 forward); Juniors — Matt McVety (6-3 center). Key losses: Josh Childs (guard), Jordan Farrar (center), Jordan Collins (forward). Promising newcomers: Junior — Dan Taylor (5-10 guard); Sophomore — Josh McDonald (6-2 center). Outlook: With a senior-laden roster, the Vikings are looking to go deeper in the tournament this year. They don’t have a lot of size again, so cranking up the tempo is a must. That makes rebounding and defense a huge priority to start the transition. They should be able to spread the offensive production around, with Dubois, Hadley, Verrier and Hall the leading scorers. Coach’s comment: “We’re going to try to press and run and make the game up-and-down a little bit.” — Coach Scott Graffam

Coach: Nate Pelletier (fifth year) Last year’s record: 15-5, lost in Eastern A semifinal Returning letter winners: Seniors - Lindsay Fox (5-6 guard), Megan Joyce (5-10 center), Alli Nolan (5-9 forward), Caitlin Hanley (5-6 guard), Brooke Ladd (5-3 guard). Key losses: Lauren Brett (guard), Melanie Cloutier (guard), Laura Courcy (guard), Mindy Rugg (forward), Megan Gauger (guard), Maddie Littlefield (guard). Promising newcomers: Junior - Dayna Shultz (5-7 guard), Sophomore - Ashley West (5-6 guard); Freshmen - Abbie Eastman (5-4 guard), Alex Rowe (5-9 forward), Kelsey DeBlois (5-9 forward). Outlook: The Vikings lost six regulars from last year but still return five seniors that make the core of this team. Joyce and Fox were both All-KVAC players. Fox will spearhead a strong defense while Joyce is a strong post presence. The bench will be thinner than last year as the new players fill that void, but Oxford Hills still has the makings of a playoff team. Coach’s comment: “After losing six seniors, we will need the incoming senior class to step it up, as well as prepare some of the younger players for the challenge of Class A East basketball. We will be a competitive team night in and night out, hoping to upset a team or two on the way. Our team goal is to be back in the tournament, and with our senior leadership, I feel we can accomplish this.” — Coach Nate Pelletier

Coach: Mike Grace (11th year) Returning letter winners: Girls: Seniors - Jessie Brown, Krista Hakala; Juniors - Kristen Lindstrom, Marisa Hanning, Kayla Turner, Leslie Grover; Sophomores - Victoria Ebsworth, Samantha Hatch, Abby Smith. Boys: Seniors - Taylor Menezes, Zach Smith; Juniors - Nick Michaud, Ryan Stuart, Chad Jordan. Key losses: Girls: Halie Gilman. Promising newcomers: Girls: Junior - Claire Stauder; Sophomore - Mimi Baumhoff; Freshmen - Colleen Stauder, Amanda Hanning. Boys: Senior - Chuck Munn; Sophomore - Mac Menezes; Freshman - Ben Brown. Outlook: Oxford Hills will miss KVAC skier of the year Gilman on the girls’ side, but Smith, a top-10 finisher at the Class A state meet, may be ready to step in. The boys will benefit from the return of Munn, who spent his junior year as an exchange student in Germany. Brown, Turner and Lindstrom also had strong 2008-09 seasons for the girls. Coach’s comment: “I don’t know if we’ll be challenging for state titles, but I think we’ll be competitive.” — Coach Mike Grace

Coach: Chris Easton (23rd year) Returning letter winners: Girls: Seniors - Lindsay Strout, Brittany Turner, Emily Thomas; Junior - Sorrel Dunn; Sophomore - Adena St. John. Boys: Seniors - Riley Eusden, Justin St. John. Key losses: Girls: Samantha Hill, Bobbi Surette. Boys: David Rugg. Promising newcomers: Girls: Senior - Katrina Heikkinen. Boys: Senior - Tucker Johnson; Sophomores - Jeremy Read, Jesse Newcomb, Dan Costanzi, Forrest Todd, Eli Gabrielsen. Outlook: Both teams haves solid senior leadership. Eusden and St. John and the boys get a boost from the return of Johnson, who sat out his junior campaign. Eusden was a top-10 finisher in both races at the Class A state meet last year. Strout and Adena St. John should help fill the void left by the graduation of Hill, the girls’ top skier. Coach’s comment: “We’re always competitive. Last year the girls cross country and alpine combined were second in the state.” — Coach Chris Easton

Coach: Tony Stevens (third year) Last year’s record: 1-17 Returning letter winners: Seniors — Nick Paine, (125/130), Joey Billings (160), Alac Buker (215); Juniors — Fred Stearns (140), Justin Cummings (152). Key losses: Meghan Wormwood (112), Caitlyn Sampson (145/152), John Wright (189). Promising newcomers: Freshmen — Bill Leahy, Dustin Edwards, Dan Peterson. What to expect: The Vikings lack depth, so it will be important for each individual to focus at each practice and push themselves. Returnees Paine, Buker, Stearns and Cummings could surprise. The team will find the going rough in the KVAC as the wrestlers learn how to compete. The trio of freshmen need mat time in order to improve. The objective is to stay on course and be geared up for the second half of the season. Outlook: “We definitely have some work to do. A lot of our kids are lacking in experience. They need more mat time. They need time to develop their wrestling skills.” — Coach Tony Stevens

Coach: Deb Loveless (23rd year) Team roster: Seniors - OrreAnn Alexander, Nicole Carlin, Brittany Errington, Meagan McDougall, Heather Olmstead, Natasha Vezina; Juniors Kersten Curtis, Cady Day, Jess Gauthier, Caitlin Grant, Chelsea Gould. Montanna Mawhinney, Amanda Smith; Freshmen - Andrea Andrews, Rachael Hammell, Katherine McDonald, Angela Packard, Ambyr Sargent.

Coach: Todd Mercer (3rd year) Key returning athletes: Seniors — Jessica Mitaly (pole vault); Ethan Ray (mid-distance), Cody Chase (sprints); Juniors — Sam Eldridge (distance, pole vault), Will Danieli (sprints); Sophomore — Amanda Peterson. Key loss: Ben Miklovich. Promising newcomers: Sophomore — Josh Bagdon; Freshman: Emily Harlow. Outlook: This is going to be the first of at least a few solid years for this program. The Patriots are bottom-heavy in terms of age, but the crux of this team, the sophomore class, is already showing it can be a force. With nearly 70 athletes combined, this group will flood events with participants, and with some of the high-end talent, may make some serious noise come time for the conference meet. Coach’s comment: “We will be strong competitors, I think we may surprise a few people this season. We’re on our way to a hugely successful team. We keep raising the bar, and they keep jumping higher.” — Coach Todd Mercer

Key losses: Rachel Clement (guard), Terri-Lynn Sanborn (guard), Amanda Valente (forward). Outlook: The Patriots lost experience in the backcourt but still return starters in Getchell (9.7 ppg, 7 rpg), Wilson (7.3 ppg, 7.6 rpg) and Valente (4 ppg, 6 rpg). Dehetre started as a freshman was missed last season to injury. GNG has nine players that have played three seasons which should help fill talent lost to graduation. The Patriots have a formidable post game with size, experience and athleticism. That should keep GNG competitive and in the chase for the tourney spot. Promising newcomers: Junior — Heath Martell (6-4 center); Sophomores — Aaron Boulos (5-10 guard), Aaron Grondin (5-10 guard), Ethan Ridge (5-11 forward). Outlook: The Patriots will spread the floor and look to get the ball inside to Valente. Kenney, an athletic slasher, and Jensen, a long-range threat, should keep defenses from sagging into the paint. Farynaz will run the point and be a key defender. Depth is a concern, but they should contend for a tournament spot. Promising newcomers: Seniors — Isaac Smith (5-10 forward), Jacob Chicoine (5-8 guard), Altan-oc Erdenechuluun (5-10 guard). Outlook: The Bucks don’t have a lot Nate Corson of varsity experience, so Rines isn’t sure what to expect from his team. Corson, Boyd, Robertson and Dooley all came off the bench last year. Erdenechuluun, an exchange student from Mongolia, has shown promise at the point guard spot. They hope to contend for one of the top three spots in the EWC but will need to jell quickly to do that. Coach: Kathy Saarinen (first year) Last year’s record: 17-3, lost in Western D semifinal. Returning letter winners: Senior - Ashlee Hamann (5-4 guard); Juniors - Samantha Jones (5-8 guard/forward), Alicia Patrie (5-4 forward), Ally Martin (5-5 forward), Sarah Colby (5-2 guard); Sophomore -Kaitlyn Rines (5-10 forward) Key losses: Lindsay Henderson (forward), Abby Jones (forward), Tristen Newton (forward), Emily Eastman (guard), Carly Carlile (forward). Promising newcomers: Sophomores - Abby Bragg (5-5 guard), Danielle Patrie (5-6 guard/ forward); Freshmen - Dakota Warren (5-6 forward/guard), Elizabeth Strout (5-4 guard), Jessica Cooper (5-7 forward), Autumn Hackett (5-8 forward). Outlook: The Bucks lost five veterans, four starters, from last year’s team and are much younger as a result. Hamann is the most experienced starter but missed half of last year with a knee injury. The other upperclassmen saw minutes at the varsity level but will take on larger roles this year. The Bucks won’t be as dominant as they have the last two years but hope to be competitive, improve and challenge for a tourney berth. Coach’s comment: “We’re a building team. I hope to see us in the playoffs. Most of them are very inexperienced, but the girls have more heart than I can ask for.” — Coach Kathy Saarinen.

Coach: Brian Kelly (first year) Last year’s record: 8-10 Returning letter winners: Seniors —Austin Clark (6-3 center), Jordan DeMillo (6-0 forward); Junior — Kyle Storer (6-2 forward); Sophomore — Zach Bonnevie (5-11 guard). Key losses: Dylan Stefani (center), Miles Hutchinson (guard), Kyle DeMillo (forward), Zach Lacroix (center), Devin Austin Clark Rose (guard), Bryan Brennick (guard), Dave Farrington (forward). Promising newcomers: Juniors — Jake Lord (5-9 guard), Jordan P. Couture (5-10 guard); Sophomores — Jacob Bessey (510 guard), James Barker (6-0, forward), Billy Calden (5-9 guard), Nate Shink (6-0 forward), Tyler Gervais (5-8 guard), Kyle Ainsley (6-1 forward). Jordan DeMillo Outlook: Kelly moves up from the JV ranks to take over a team revitalized by the return of a player he never got to coach in the junior varsity. Clark was the Tigers’ leading scorer and rebounder his freshman and sophomore years, then moved out of state before last season. He will be one of the top players in the MVC. With Storer and DeMillo also in the mix, they have as much athleticism, experience Kyle Storer and size in the frontcourt as anyone in the conference. They did lose a lot in the backcourt, however, with Bonnevie the only experienced guard on the squad.. Coach’s comment: “How well these players can adjust to the varsity level will be a key ingredient to how far we can go this season.” — Coach Brian Kelly

Coach: Chris Bessey (seventh year) Last year’s record: 19-4, won Class C state title Returning letter winners: Seniors - Hillary Deane (5-9 forward), Mallory Bonnevie (5-7 guard), Gina Nemi (5-9 forward), Kelsea Beisaw (5-4 guard); Juniors - Beth Moore (5-9 forward), Alannah White (5-6 guard), Brittany DiPompo (5-6 guard); Sophomores - Alexis Blodgett (5-7 guard), Lexi Deering (5-6 guard). Key losses: Liz LeBlanc (forward), Betsy Gemelli (guard). Promising newcomers: Sophomores - Ashlee Quirron (5-3 guard), Kourtney Brennick (5-10 center), Kristy Macumber (5-8 guard). Kelsea Beisaw Outlook: The Tigers graduated two seniors from last year’s state championship team, including LeBlanc, the MVC Player of the Year. Jay returns the rest of that squad and has plenty of height and experience. Deane (12 ppg, 6 rpg) is the leading returning scorer while Moore (7 ppg, 7 rpg) and Nemi (7 rpg) were both among league leaders on the boards. Bonnevie (6.6 ppg) was superb in the back- Mallory Bonnevie court while Blodgett proved to be a sparkplug. Jay should be a contender in Western C again but replacing the leadership and big play contributions of LeBlanc and Gemelli won’t be easy. Coach’s comment: “The MVC and the new format will make this year very competitive. Starting out the year with everyone gunning for you will Hillary Deane add to the importance of hard work in practice and to make individual improvements to succeed as a team.” — Coach Chris Bessey.

Promising newcomers: Girls: Freshman - Emily Acritelli. Boys: Freshmen - Alex Hartford, Cameron Rose. Outlook: Jacques finished second in slalom and third in giant slalom at the Class C state meet last winter. The boys’ team placed second in Alpine in the MVC and fifth in states. There’s a strong chance for all those results to improve. Coach’s comment: “Lindsey (Jacques) is one of the top skiers in all classes of high school racing in the state.” — Coach Kenny Jacques

Coach: Travis Magnusson (third year) Last year’s record: 9-10, lost in Western C prelim Returning letter winners: Seniors — Chandler White (guard), Khyle Whittemore (guard), Nate Michaud (guard), Tom Ventrella (forward), Derek Castonguay (forward); Juniors — Mike Armstrong (center), Mike Castonguay (forward), Hunter Brett (guard) Key losses: Ryan Ames (forward) Promising newcomers: Seniors — Willie Brown (guard), Ian Wilcox (center); Junior — Jake Keene (forward). Outlook: With a veteran nucleus returning, the Andies are expected to rank among the top teams in the MVC this year. White is one of the top guards in Class C. Ventrella can score from inside and outside and was one of the top rebounders in the MVC last year, along with Derek Castonguay. They will look to run, but should be able to mix it up with the more physical teams in the league. Coach’s comment: “We should get up and down and play an exciting brand of basketball that will be fun to watch.” — Coach Travis Magnusson

Coach: Mark Simpson (first year, fifth overall) Last year’s record: 9-10, lost in Western C preliminary Returning letter winners: Seniors - Hannah Therrien (5-8 forward), Kathrynn Lake (5-5 guard); Juniors - Marissa Welch (5-11 center), Annika Durrell (5-7 guard/forward); Sophomore - Kathrynn Ventrella (5-7 guard). Key losses: Laura Howell (center), Missi O’Connor (guard), Kendra Lyman (forward). Promising newcomers: Juniors Megan Therrien (5-8 guard), Samantha Greenwood (5-3 guard), Kim Theriault (54 guard); Sophomore - Micaela Baron (5-7 forward); Freshmen - Loryanna Tracy (54 guard), Ashlie Robbins (5-7 forward). Outlook: Simpson returns to a program he coached in the 1990’s. His Andies graduated 63 percent of the offense and will rely on its defensive play and a combination of speed and size. Welch was among the league leaders in rebounds while Ventrella was an All-MVC Honorable Mention. The Andies have holes to fill but expect to remain competitive and could challenge for another postseason berth. Coach’s comment: “ I hope that we can show steady improvement during the season and maybe surprise some teams in the second half.” — Coach Mark Simpson

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Coaches: Kenny Jacques and Bill Acritelli (first year) Returning letter winners: Girls: Senior - Jayde Purington; Junior - Lexie Niedner; Sophomore - Isabella Randall. Boys: Senior Willie Brown; Juniors - Alex Rose, Zach Vigue. Key losses: Boys: Ryan Jackson. Promising newcomers: Girls: Erin Gats, Elizabeth Cote, Haily Shea. Boys: Cody Jacques, Trevor Timberlake, Owen Timberlake, Zach Bates, Chad Bamford, David Newman, Travis Neal, Ryan Chretien, Philipea Paradis. Outlook: LF will boast its largest and most talented team in years. Rose is the reigning Class C boys’ state champion in slalom and giant slalom. Niedner is a contender for the state title in skimeister (combined success in Alpine and Nordic). Brown, Vigue and Cody Jacques, a transfer from Jay, combine with Rose to give the Andies a shot at climbing the final rung on the ladder after finishing second in the boys’ Class C competition a year ago. Purington will lead the girls’ charge at the conference and state levels. Coach’s comment: “This year could prove very successful for both the boys and the girls if everything falls into place.” — Coach Kenny Jacques

Coach: Dave Gerrish (first year) Last year’s record: 20-2, lost Class C state championship Returning letter winners: Seniors —Eric Bolduc (5-10 guard), Clifford Turner (5-8 guard), Nic Crutchfield (5-11 forward), Tyler Gates (5-11 guard), Kyle Hutchinson (6-1 forward), Tyler Chiasson (6-2 guard); Junior — Spencer Ross (5-10 guard), Arik Fenstermacher (5-9 guard). Key losses: Thomas Knight (center), Aaron Fenstermacher (guard), Tristan Franchetti (forward). Promising newcomers: Senior — Ryan Lafleur (5-10 forward); Sophomores — Caleb Turner (5-7 guard), Cody St. Germain (5-11 forward), Jake Dowland (5-10 forward), Josh Turbide (5-8 guard). Outlook: Gerrish, who coached Mountain Valley, to two straight regional titles and a Class B state title in 2007, takes over his former school’s biggest rival. Their Mr. Maine Basketball winner may have moved on to Notre Dame, but the Cougars are still one of the favorites in the MVC. Chiasson is one of the top guards in the conference and a tough matchup with his size and strength. With Bolduc, they have one of the top backcourts in Class C. They don’t have the size they had last year with Knight gone, but Crutchfield and Hutchinson bring toughness and athleticism up front. Coach’s comment: “If there’s any difference, we might play a little faster because we’re smaller and that’s what’s needed.” — Coach Dave Gerrish

Key losses: Kristen Harvey (guard). Promising newcomers: Sophomore - Angela Ronan (5-11 forward). Outlook: The Cougars return almost all of last year’s squad Morgan Hutchins including Hebert (10.5 ppg), an All-MVC pick. Dirigo was a young exciting team to watch last year but might have been a step away. The Cougars have a little more seasoning and have plenty of talent and experience now to be a threat in the MVC. In addition to Hebert, Sinclair, Turner and Hutcins are four-year players while Knight and Kersey are three-year players. Ronan shold bolster the post after Tricia Turner recovering from an injury in the offseason. Expect Dirigo to continue to play stingy and aggressive defensively. Coach’s comment: “We feel if we play smart and continue to work hard that we should do well. What we lack in height we more than make up for with heart, desire and aggressiveness.” — Coach Reggie Weston

Boys: Sophomore - Jeffrey Colpitts; Freshmen - Michael Chow, Loren Keim. Outlook: Kirstin Blood, who finished fourth in the MVC freestyle championship race last winter, leads an experienced girls’ Kelly Gould team. Fuller, the lone incoming freshman, has been skiing for several years. Carver gaineed valuable experience for the boys a year ago and could surprise. Coach’s comment: “Finally we should have enough girls to be a complete team (at the conference and state meets).” — Coach Wendell Blood

Monmouth Academy GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Coach: Rick Amero (14th year) Last year’s record: 2-16 Returning letter winners: Senior - Courtney McFarren (5-3 guard); Junior - Kelsie Hilton (5-4 guard); Sophomores - Emily Benoit (5-3 guard), Kristine Kahl (5-10 forward), Molly Menice (5-3 guard), Courtney Colby Wilson (5-2 guard). McFarren Key losses: Erika Ducharme (guard), Alyssa Morin (forward), Bethany Neal (forward). Promising newcomers: Juniors - Kristi Hilton (5-4 guard), Hillary Jean (5-8 forward); Sophomores - Angie Bechard (5-5 forward), Nicole Nugent (5-3 guard); Freshmen - Melissa Brasard (5-6 guard), Danielle Bumann (5-3 guard), Daisi Poole (5-3 guard/forward), Sierra Spencer (5-6 guard/forward). Outlook: The Mustangs graduated three veteran players, including Morin and Neal, the team’s two top scorers and rebounds. That leaves Monmouth with a very young and small squad. Still, the Mustangs have some athletes and a lot of hustle. Monmouth will be one of the youngers teams in the MVC but could also be one of the scrappiest. Expect the Mustangs to make great strides as the season progresses. Coach’s comment: “This season promises to be an exciting one. We are young, but we have a group of players who really enjoy playing basketball and are willing to put forth the effort to get to the next level.” — Coach Rick Amero

Promising newcomers: Senior — Logan Van Vlack (6-0 guard); Junior — Jeremy Ashlock (5-8 guard); Sophomores — Scott Peacock (5-10 forward), Ben Woodman (6-0 forward). Outlook: Experience and athleticism are the Mustangs’ strengths, but Turner is emphasizing the fundamentals in his first year to bring out the most in the strengths that they have. Improving transition and half-court defense are going to be emphasized. On offense, they will be more patient with the ball and value every possession. Dyke was an all-MVC honorable mention as a junior. BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Coach: David Nordstrom (first year) Returning letter winners: Girls: Seniors - Abbi Davis, Amanda Hall; Juniors - Hannah Allen, Shelby Aseltine, Caitlin Douglass; Sophomores - Addie Cullenberg, Molly Fissette, Emily Ramsey. Boys: Seniors - Richie Brooks, Kelton Cullenberg, Nick Wilkins, Jared Foster; Juniors - Brody Hines, Tim Andrews; Sophomores - Jonah Jones, North Kay. Key losses: Girls: Meredith Allen. Boys: Adam Fissette, Welly Ramsey, Derek Rowe. Promising newcomers: Girls: Junior - Alex Allen; Freshmen - Janel Brooks, Shireen Luick, Deanna Richards, Emily Roberts. Boys: Freshmen - Jake Corell, Zach Veayo. Outlook: The girls team tied with Leavitt for the Nordic Title at the Class A state meet last year. Aseltine is the defending state champion in both disciplines, and the nucleus of the team remains very young. The boys also won a Class A title and have a deep roster of athletes who are exceptional in both cross country running and skiing. While Nordstrom expects a tighter race for the crown this year, he believes the Cougars remain a factor. Coach’s comment: “There are no seniors (except for skimeister candidates) on the girls’ team, so we should be strong for the next couple of years.” — Coach David Nordstrom

Coach: Eric Hall (first year) Last year’s record: 0-18 Returning letter winners: Seniors — Scott Eck (5-10 guard), Steve Obie (5-10 guard), Chris Whitney (6-0 guard), Andrew Tupper (6-1 forward), Ethan Audie (6-3 forward); Juniors — Toby Andy Tupper Harrington (6-0 forward/guard), Mike Degou (5-9 guard), Andrew McDonnell (5-10 guard). Promising newcomers: Juniors — Alex Branson (6-3 forward), Alex Corey (6-3 forward); Freshmen — Mason Haley (5-10 guard), Brad Groh (6-3 forward). Chris Whitney Outlook: Hall, the son of longtime Lisbon track coach Dean Hall and a former Greyhound from the early-mid 1990s, hopes to rebuild the Greyhounds back into an MVC competitor. He hopes the success his players have had in fall and spring sports can translate to the winter. He has an experienced nucleus to work with, particularly in the backcourt. The first task is to get a win or two under their Scott Eck belts and improve everyone’s confidence. Coach’s comment: “We’ve got to communicate on the court and we’ve got to find it within ourselves to not be intimidated by teams that have a winning tradition.” — Coach Eric Hall

Outlook: The Greyhounds graduated six veteran seniors, including Purcell, an all-conference pick. Moore led the team in scorShelby Brannon ing (11.9 ppg) and was a First Team All-MVC player. Cloutier was also a regular starter but many of the Greyhounds came off the bench last year and will see increased roles. Lisbon has some size and a small group of veterans that should lead the club. Coach’s comment: “The keys to Lisbon’s success is executing on offense, limiting our opponents to one shot, rebounding and protecting the basketball.” — Coach Jake Gentle.

What to expect: The Greyhounds have several experienced wrestlers returning from last year’s state championship team. That includes two-time state champions Cornell, Bubar and McNamara. Doughty is also a reigning state champion. There is plenty in reserve with finalists Pomerleau and Nicholson, while Stambach placed fourth. With a state qualifier replacing the regional meets in Class C, criteria for seeding could hurt Lisbon, which has one of the toughest schedules in Maine.

Outlook: With long-time varsity assistant/JV head coach White at the helm, the Falcons aren’t just going to go up-tempo this year, they’re going on Grinnell time. Their new offensive system, pattered after a small private college in Iowa, stresses keeping the pedal to the metal, shooting three-pointers, full-court pressure and subbing liberally to keep fresh legs on the floor. They hope to have Kaubris, one of the top players in Western B last year, recovered from the shoulder problems he dealt with during football season. Coach’s comment: “We’re going to be unconventional, that’s for sure.” — Coach Rick White

Coach: Gary Dolloff (ninth year) Last year’s record: Western B regional champions. Returning letter winners: Seniors — Tim Ross (130), Hillary Dolloff (135), Matt Duka (160); Juniors — Ryan Burgess (112), Cody Magoon (125), Josh Thornton (145), Josh Allen (189), Christian Durland (189/215); Sophomores — Robert Hillary Dolloff Worthley (103), Joe Provencher (119), Dylan Gallant (130), Taylor Carey (152), Ryan Glover (215). Key losses: Ernie Matthews (135), Brian Cogley (171). Promising newcomers: None given. What to expect: Matt Duka The Falcons have a good mix of talent, beginning with Duka, who reached the state final, and Ross, who placed in the ‘06 state meet. Magoon (shoulder) and Allen (ACL) return after sitting out last year. Allen placed third in the state meet Tim Ross as a freshman. Burgess, Thornton and Durland can each score in tournaments. The freshmen and sophomores should make an impact by the end of the season. Outlook: The Falcons have just one returning starter back in Knapp. Allen provided some nice minutes off the bench and should bolster the post. Paterson will spearhead the defense while Gallant also has experience giving the Falcons a veteran returning group. There will still be a number of players taking on larger roles. Coach’s comment: “If we can use our quickness to our advantage, play solid defense and take care of the basketball at the offensive end, then I think we will be very competitive.” — Coach Rich Allen.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Coach: Seth Fournier (seventh year) Returning letter winners: Girls: Senior: Shelby Moore; Juniors - Kera Miller, Courtney Carlson; Sophomore - Heather Adley. Boys: Seniors - Nate Papsadora, Carl Zurhorst; Juniors - David Adley, Darren Jodrey, Eric Billings; Sophomores Nate Nichols, Nick Woods. Key losses: Boys: Jon MacKenzie, Tom Puiia. Promising newcomers: None available at press time. Outlook: The girls’ team returns mostly intact and is led by Miller (fifth slalom, ninth GS at Class B state meet), Carlson (seventh, slalom) and Moore (12th, GS). The boys will miss MacKenzie and Puiia, who led the Falcons to an MVC championship and third in the state behind Yarmouth and Falmouth. Papsadora and Zurhorst are the top returnees. Coach’s comment: “Both the boys and girls should be able to contend for at least the conference championship. The girls are going to be a small team, but all four of them are solid.” — Coach Seth Fournier

Coach: Ray Broomhall (third year) Returning letter winners: Boys: Seniors - Carl Zurhorst, Jordan Theriault, Jamie Hutchins, Frank Parsons, Brandon LaCourse, Cam Welch; Sophomores Eric Zurhorst, Nick Woods. Girls: Senior - Camilla Glazier; Juniors - Kymberly Couch, Samantha Glover; Sophomore - Hannah LaPointe. Key losses: Girls: Kiley Clement. Promising newcomers: Boys: Seniors - Niklas Lehrke, Toni Weber, Luiz Rispow, Yago Ceballos, Zachary Sweetser. Girls: Junior - Kelsey Salatino. Outlook: The boys’ team has grown to 14 skiers with the help of four exchange students. Carl Zurhorst and Theriault both placed in the top 10 in each half of the Mountain Valley Conference championships last year and will anchor an experienced group. LaPointe is the top returning skier for the girls, who lost only one member of the team and gain Salatino, a transfer from Dirigo. Coach’s comment: “We should hold our own in the MVCs.” — Coach Ray Broomhall

Coach: Mike DeRaps (2nd year) Last year’s record: 4-14 Returning letter winners: Seniors — Jimmy Barker (6-0 guard), Jarrod Blood (5-10 guard), Joey Lampron (6-3 forward/guard), Kenny Moir (6-2 forward), Lincoln Dyar (5-11 forward/guard) ; Juniors — Aaron Jalbert (5-7 guard), Alex Shaw (5-10 guard); Sophomore — Tyler Hupper (6-5 center). Key losses: Sam Simpson (forward). Promising newcomers: Sophomore — Parker Kennedy (6-0 guard); Freshmen — Ian James (6-1 forward), Ethan Boyd (5-10 guard). Outlook: The Roadrunners return 80 percent of their starters and had a good summer, so they should be one of the most improved team in the MVC. Barker is an athletic point guard who was one of the top 3-point shooters in the conference last year. Lampron provides versatility and rebounding. Coach’s comment: “We’re looking to improve on last year. We’re hoping we can go .500 this year.” — Coach Mike DeRaps

Coach: Doug Lisherness (24th year) Last year’s record: 14-7, lost in Western C semifinal Returning letter winners: Seniors - Kylie Rolbiecki (5-4 guard), Mikayla Burbank (5-7 guard), Heather Campbell (5-6 forward), Amanda Richards (5-5 guard); Juniors - Colleen Shields (5-8 forward), Danielle Smith (5-6 guard); Sophmores - Samantha Werzanski (5-5 guard) Key losses: Kenni Norton (guard), Macy Ryan (center), Nicole Eisenhaur (guard) Promising newcomers: Freshmen - Annie Dexter (5-11 center), Mykayla Luce (5-5 guard), Jill Howard (5-7 forward), Taylor Henderson (5-4 guard), Tori Beane (5-6 guard), Lyndsay Beane (5-5 guard), Miranda Smith (5-8 center). Outlook: The Roadrunners graduated Norton, an All-MVC player, but still expected the rest of the team back. Ryan then moved out of state, Burbank injured her knee in soccer and two others chose not to play. That leaves Rolbiecki as the lone returning starter. Mt. Abram has seven freshmen that will see plenty of action. Some will likely see starting time. Lisherness says this is one of the youngest groups he’s started a year with, but the freshmen group is also one of the most promising he’s seen. Coach’s comment: “I graduated one senior and then still only have one of my starting five back. We’re a little younger this year than I thought we would be. I can’t rememeber the last time I said it was going to be a rebuilding year.” — Coach Doug Lisherness

Coach: Matt Plante (3rd year) Last Year’s Record: 25-8-0 Returning letter-winners: Seniors — Andy Bettencourt, Cam Moniz, Vlad Gavrik, Colin Taylor, Kyle Black, Evan Richardson, Chris Gacsy, Bryan Felice, Nate Dupere, Ian Canty. Junior — Alex Doumeng. Key Losses: Chad Goodwin, Andrew Cetola, Ken Pia, Billy Brewster, Eric Rodriguez, Matt Siracusa, Peter Quigley, Craig Ryan Promising newcomers: PG — Jamie Tyminski; Junior — Joey Collins; Sophomores — Jeremy Laing, Drake Hart, Alex Mills. Outlook: Having lost a good portion of their offense from a year ago, the bright spot will be in the net and on the blueline. The Lumberjacks return every single defenseman in their top 6 rotation from last year and look to be very solid and very deep in net again this year. They still have a good chunk of offense returning as well, with Bettencourt, Moniz and Gavrik all back. They may not score in numbers like they did a year ago but

they should still be in the thick of things all season. Coach’s Comment: “The key to our success this season will be how quickly we come together as a team and learn to share the load together. The returners know how important team chemistry was for last season’s successes and with our leadership I am confident that we will gel and become a cohesive unit. A great work ethic, positive attitude, and the support of each other will be extremely important as we will strive to get better every day because that is what it is going to take for us to accomplish our goals this season.” — Coach Matt Plante

Promising newcomers: Senior — Courtney Vallee (D); Juniors — Talya Bent (F), Maggie Lane (F); Sophomore — Kaya de la Isla (F); Freshmen — Emily Wyman (F), Lauran Yomantas (G). Outlook: Hebron lost only two key seniors from last year, which did account for a lot of the scoring. But the Lumberjacks should be a lot more experienced overall, and should be much better in the defensive zone. Having two solid goalies should make a world of difference and keep that position nice and fresh for February and hopefully into March. Coach’s comment: “We need to do the skill parts of the game better because our margin for error is small. We need to really improve our rebounding because of our lack of size. We have experience, and we will need to work well together to perform at an acceptable level.” — Coach Ray Convery

Coach: Rollie Pelky (First year) Last year’s record: 13-7, lost in Western C quarterfinal Returning letter winners: Seniors —Tyler Arsenault (5-8 guard), Andy Emery (5-8 guard), Cory Staples (6-2 forward), Justin White (6-3 forward); Juniors — Billy Gordon (6-2 guard/ forward), Travis Luce (6-0 forward), Derek Pamphrey (5-9 guard). Key losses: Zach Farrington (guard), Skyler Whaley (center), David Ketchen (guard), Andrew Smithgall (forward), Tom Conley (center), Chad Morang (forward). Promising newcomers: Juniors — Ryan Castonguay (6-2 forward), Ryan Conant (5-9 guard); Freshman — Hunter Kilgore (5-7 guard). Outlook: Pelky, the junior varsity coach last year, will be coaching a lot of familiar faces at the varsity this year. The Ramblers are inexperienced but deep. Emery, Pamphrey and Conant can all shoot, and Gordon is one of the better allaround players in the MVC, so they will run to take advantage of those strengths. Cory Staples Coach’s comment: “We’re going to try to run and play pressure.” — Coach Rollie Pelky

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Coach: Ray Convery (25th year) Last year’s record: 15-6, lost in Western C semifinal Returning letter winners: Seniors -Michelle Lough (5-6 forward), Katie Michelson (5-7 forward), Alex Veilleux (5-4 Justin White guard), Kelsey Ouellette (5-9 guard); Juniors - Sarah Warner (5-4 guard), Kelsey Nason (5-10 forward), Nikki Scott (5-4 guard). Key losses: Anna Smithgall (forward), Lindsey Gordon (forward). Outlook: The Ramblers only lost two seniors but both were veteran post players. Ouellette (10.5 ppg) was an MVC All-Star. Michelson and Scott are both returning starters. Winthrop will be a small team, both size-wise and numbers-wise. Still, the Ramblers expect to play hard Tyler Arsenault and will be a team on the rise as players adjust to new roles. Winthrop should be in the hunt for a playoff spot and will be a tough foe in the conference.

Poland POLAND/GNG HOCKEY Coach: Aaron Rand (third season) Last year’s record: 13-6-0 Returning letterwinners: Seniors — Dan Roberts (F), Tyler Snow (F); Juniors — Kolby Arnold (F), Zac Knapp (D), Sam Mayer (D), Devin Goyette (F), Matt Ouellette (G); Sophomores — Ryan Davala (F), Evan Coulome (D), Evan Baggs (F), Cam Spiller (D). Promising newcomers: Senior — Josh Michaud; Juniors — Cody Girouard (F), Joey Viloette (F), Nick Labbe (F); Sophomores — Adam Healy (F), Jordan Rouillard (D); Freshman — Calvin Shelley (G). Outlook: The Patriotic Knights are in transition a bit this season. There is no doubt some talent remains after suffering serious losses to graduation, most notably with Arnold up front. The big question will be in net, where Shelley comes in with a family pedigree, but is largely untested to date. With a shift full-time to Eastern A, along with St. Dom’s, the playoff push just got a bit tougher, but there is hope that this squad can be among the second half of the playoff teams come late February. Coach: Gregg Rose (2nd year) Last year’s record: 3-15 Returning letter winners: Seniors —Mike Littlefield (6-5), Kevin Payette (6-4), Kyle MacVane (5-9), Matt Brewster (5-11), Nathan Williams (5-10); Junior — Jonah Farrington (6-0). Key losses: Casey Ray, Joe Murphy, Kenzie Cook. Promising newcomers: Juniors — Derick Fogg (5-4), Jordan Chase (5-10); Sophomores — Logan Nichols (5-7), Jacob Littlefield (6-4). Outlook: The Knights return four of their top five scorers from last year. They have good size and will look to pound the ball inside to the Littlefields and Payette. MacVane, Farrington and Nichols can keep defenses honest with their outside shooting. They will switch things up frequently on defense to get teams of their rhythm. Coach’s comment: “We will play more of a slow-down game like last year and take advantage of our strengths.” — Coach Gregg Rose

Coach: Andrew Morong (second year) Last year’s record: 0-18 Returning letter winners: Seniors -Brittany Michaud (5-6 guard), Celeste Knowles (5-7 guard), Sara Sands (5-6 guard), Stephanie Spaulding (5-3 guard), Kim Wallingford (5-6 forward); Junior - Cassie Mocciola Morgan Copp (5-7 guard). Key losses: Alexa Doyer (guard) Promising newcomers: Senior Maria Lundberg (5-9 forward); Junior - Morgan Copp (5-8 guard); Sophomore - Katrina Seeley (5-5 guard); Freshmen - Kayla Yirrell (5-11 center), Emma Turton (5-6 guard), Sophie Spiller (5-6 guard). Outlook: The Knights were starting from scratch a year ago with a new coach and an inexperienced club. Now Poland is ready to take a step up with much of last year’s team Sara Sands back with experience. Morong has eight girls back that saw time in last year’s injury-plagued campaign. Knowles missed 14 games and is a key returnee while Copp should be a force in the backcourt as well after a year off. Lundberg and Yirrell give the Knights two post players that could made a difference. The team is evolving and the defense is getting better. Poland can see the improvement already and hopes it shows on the court. Coach’s comment: “The girls have Brittany Michaud really bought into what we are trying to do and where we are trying to go. We went 0-18 last year. So we will be overlooked. That’s exactly what we want because we will be ready to bring it every night.” — Coach Andrew Morong.

Key losses: Jake Levesque, Marc Daigle, Cory Palmer. Promising newcomers: Junior — Jon Dale; Freshman — Tyler Plante. Outlook: After an even-keel year last season in the team’s first venture into the Class A waters, the team this year should be better prepared to deal with the level of play. The strength this year is on the back end, with four goalies looking to fill two positions, and three young but experienced defensemen on the blue line. Up front, replacing two of the top three scorers from last year will be tough. Ogren and Knowlton will need to lead the way. Coach’s comment: “We didn’t allow very many goals last season, and if we can keep that trend

going andfind some scoring, we could have a very good year.” — Coach Jeff Fowler

Rangeley BOYS’ BASKETBALL Coach: Matt Clark (Firs year) Last year’s record: 4-14 Returning letter winners: Senior — Zach Abbott (5-10 forward); Juniors — Zeke Hall (6-3 center/ forward), Regan Sargent (5-10 forward), Jordan Richards (5-10 guard); Sophomores — Eric White (6-3 forward/center), Hudson DeRaps (5-9 guard/forward), Alex Morton (6-0 forward), Darren Decelles (5-7 guard), Kyle Haley (5-10 forward). Key losses: Quinn Philbrick (guard), Casey Clark (guard). Promising newcomers: Sophomore — , Tucker Simmons (5-8 guard); Freshman — A.J. Elmes

(5-8 guard), Austin Frigoli (5-6 guard). Outlook: Clark, an assistant at Dirigo, takes over a Lakers’ club that is young but not too green. If Hall can work through some knee problems, they will have one of the top big men in Western D. They have plenty of size to match up with most teams in the region, too. Frigoli, a transfer from Messalonskee, could see time at the point. Coach’s comment: “We’re going to go through some growing pains trying to learn a new system.” — Coach Matt Clark

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Coach: Heidi Deery (16th year) Last year’s record: 14-7, lost in Western D final

rienced club for a team without a senior. Hammond has played four years while the sophomores have played three years. Players will have to step up and replace Olivieri and the White sisters, but the Lakers could be another force in Western D this year and in season’s to come. Coach’s comment: “We are looking for our returning players to play a big role offensively and defensively. We are very excited about our four newcomers and their potential to step up and produce as the season progresses. This year we may be the deepest down the bench that we have ever been.” — Coach Heidi Deery

SKIING Coach: Martin Wilson (second year) Returning letter winners: Girls: Senior - Emma Christensen. Boys: Senior - Nick Bridges. Promising newcomer: Boys: Sophomore - Connor Durgin. Outlook: Wilson hopes to rebuild the Lakers’ proud skiing tradition and is optimistic about the large numbers in the elemen-

tary and junior high programs. For now, the focus is on individual achievement. Christensen is a contender for Class C state titles. She was second behind eventual giant slalom champion Sam Largess of Telstar before falling on her second run last year. Coach’s comment: “The potential is so great with the mountain (Saddleback) right here. And there’s only one school in town, so it doesn’t take some crystal ball to see what’s coming down the pike.” — Coach Martin Wilson

CHEERING Coach: Tracy Cavalier (fifth year) Team personnel: Senior — Britt Taylor; Juniors — Savanna Giguere, Chelsey Sacre, Dagmar Wetherill; Sophomores — Chelsea Dresser, Samantha Lauter; Freshmen — Gabrielle Cavalier, Ariel Clinch, Megan Crosson, Lindsey Toothaker; Eighth graders — Brianna Hall, Tala Ferguson, Emma Fay; Team helper — Hannah Ventresca.
