Edward Little High School ELHS Girls’ Basketball Coach: Craig Jipson (seventh year) Last year’s record: 16-4, lost in Eastern A semifinal Returning letter winners: Seniors — Kelly Philbrook (5-7 guard), MaryKate Masters (57 guard), Emily Hartnett (5-7 guard); Junior — Ashlee Arnold (5-8 guard), Kate Sawyer (5-7 guard), Taylor French (5-9 guard); Sophomore — Kory Norcross (5-7 guard), Kennedy Hubbard (5-8 forward). Key losses: Frankie Lally (5-6 guard), Miranda Martin (forward), Dawna Daigle (forward). Promising newcomers: Senior — Crissy Lewis
(5-11 forward); Sophomore — Danny Rock (56 guard); Freshmen — Brooke Reynolds (5-8 forward), Tianna Harriman (5-6 guard). Outlook: EL graduated three regulars from last year’s KVAC championship team, but still have the bulk of the club returning, including Arnold, an all-conference player, and starters Sawyer and Norcross. Lewis is also back. She was a starter as a sophomore but was all-conference at Oxford Hills last year. With some veteran talent and promising new players, EL should contend again in the KVAC and Eastern A. Coach’s comment: “Last year’s senior class played in three KVAC championship games in a row and the semifinals twice. If we can develop great team chemistry and consistent leadership, we could be OK. We look to get better every week and play our best basketball at the end of the season.” — Coach Craig Jipson

Key losses : Dyla n Nadeau, Cody Russel l, Richard Belanger. Promising newcomers: Freshmen — Branden Dyer (F), Cade Chapman (D), Zach Gosselin (G).
Outlook: The sting of missing the playoffs by a whisker on the final day of the season may not yet be out of the Eddies’ minds. And that’s probably a good thing. A veteran crew returns for the Eddies this season, everywhere but in the cage. Nelson and Gosselin will battle for playing time there. The forwards are quick and can score, and there is a solid group of defenders back. EL should be right back in the playoff chase again this season. Coach’s comment: “The coaching sta f f is excited about t he retur n of severa l players who received a significant amount of playing time last season against some of the state’s top-tier teams.” — Coach Craig Latuscha

Key loss: Brianna Stanley. Promising newcomers : Danica Nadeau, Em ma Ma r t i neau, W h it ney McMa hon, Haley Roderick, Abby L’Heureux, Christina Latlippe, Tori Sanford, Brittany Cloutier, Mercedes Pequeno. Outlook: After watching rivals Lewiston and St. Dom’s raise a banner in celebration of state titles in two of the past three seasons, the Red Hornets’ sights this year are set on making it three years in four for the Twin Cities. They have the team to do it, if they can shore up some defense in front of a new keeper (Sanford). The offense is there, the defenders can all skate and move the puck
well, and the team is primed to make a run at the Eastern crown. Coach’s comment: ”Our goal this year is to

The boys lost a ton of talent at the top, but there is a newfound depth on the squad this year, and that depth may be the key to improving on last year’s finish at states, which came as a result of a fall or two. Outlook: EL is t he f irst prog ra m since Caribou (1980 to ’83) to appear in four stra ight Eastern Class A cha mpionship games. To make it five, the Eddies will need a big year from veterans Leary and Haji-Hersi
and some huge contributions from several newcomers. Therriault brings size and experience to the point-guard position. At just under 300 pounds with a large wing span, Crenshaw is a unique talent in the paint. Alexander and the three freshmen represent a youth movement that suggests the Eddies’ impressive run under Adams is far from over. Outlook: A very young squad, but the Blue Devils are on an upswing after a down year last season. The juniors and sophomores are all game-tested after playing a heavy dose of minutes a year ago, and the freshman class is outstanding at all positions. The rebound year at Lewiston has a chance to be even

That depth will be put to the test, particularly in net, where Bourassa and Wigant have the unenviable task of following Poussard. The team can skate, and it can defend, and it wouldn’t shock anyone to see the Blue Devils right back in the mix for the Eastern crown this season. Outlook: One key skier from the boys’ squad and another from the girls’ team graduated, but the teams’ depth remains, particularly on the girls’ side, where a large group of seniors will look to replicate last season’s results in their final high school season. The boys’ team is big, with a lot of newcomers. But like the girls, the boys have a lot of talent in those numbers. With Fryeburg back in Class B, the A field is wide ooen and ripe for
the picking. Coach’s comment: “The outlook for the girls is good, but the competition looks good, too. The boys’ team is hard to predict. It could be a building year, but there is an outside chance
for a perfect storm of talent and motivation to produce a truly astonishing package.” — Coach David Nordstrom

Out look : Ha s t here ever been a yea r when the Cougars aren’t considered title contenders? The short answer is no. With only one major piece of the puzzle gone from each squad, both the boys and girls are look ing as strong as ever. The elder Bonnevie’s return from CVA will be a big boost, and the girls have a strong returning core, as well. After a year with shady depth, the team is once again picking up numbers and should be deeper than a year ago.
Coach’s comment: ”Bot h t he boys and the girls, h i stor ic a l ly, have a lways had dept h. If we have one skier fall, we have a fifth or sixth skier right there to pick them up. I think we have that again this year.” — Coach Mark Cyr

The boys’ pack should be solid, and some good, young skiers continue to filter into both teams every year. C oach’s c om ment : ” T h i s i s a v er y enthusiastic bunch that likes to work hard
Barr y; Sophomores — Elise Luce, Emily Listowich. Key losses: None. Promising newcomers: Boys: Seniors — Parker Kennedy, Quincy Mitman, Tristan Fr ye. Girls : Senior — Ash ley Shur t lef f; Freshmen — Ruthie Fault, Hattie Rosenberg. Outlook: The girls are primed for a run at a state title, while the boys finally have some depth. The Luces lead the girls’ squad that placed well in a tough Class B field a year ago. The entire team returns, has added some solid depth, and should be strong all season
in both the MVC and in state competition. The boys will be deeper than in years past and will almost undoubtedly improve upon last year’s standing. Coach’s comment: “The (girls’) team hopes to build on last year’s finish with a stronger, full team. We are striving to not finish second this year, but to win both events at states ... Should the boys come along as anticipated, then the team should move up in the standings and be competitive.” — Coach Bob Luce

Promising newcomers: Junior — Staci Plog (5-6 forward); Sophomore — Alex Harnden (5-4 guard); Freshmen — Brooke Millbury (55 guard). Outlook: The Roadrunners return seven players from last year, including starters
Tori Beane, Luce, Howard and Smith. Mt. Abram is still young with just one senior, but this returning group has been together for a few years. Lisherness hopes that seasoning pays off. He expects the Roadrunners to be competitive throughout the MVC and challenge for a tourney spot. Coach’s comment: “I’m very happy with what I’ve seen so far. We had a very good summer, and the girls gained a lot of confidence.” — Coach Doug Lisherness

Outlook: The Roadrunners remain one of the youngest teams in the MVC. They will build around Hupper, a three-year starter in the low post. With Carrabec dropping its varsity program this season, Mt. Oak Hill lost three regulars, including Sabine, the KVAC B Player of the Year. Beaulieu is a fouryear starter while Marston, Caskin and Priest have improved and are ready to take on larger roles. Hilchey will be key in the post for the Raiders. Oak Hill is young with eight underclassmen. Coach’s comment: “Obviously with the amount of freshmen on the team, there will be growing pains at the start. This is a good group of players who work very hard and support one another.” — Coach Tom Morong
Outlook: To quote John Lennon, it’ll be just like starting over. Three senior starters graduated and three key players elected not to return to the team. Coach Jared Browne left over the summer to take the same job at his alma mater, Winslow. Smith, previously an assistant at St. Dom’s and Poland, will look to build around Morin and Asselin. The lack of seniors hints at a building year with high hopes for 2013 and beyond. Coach’s comment: “It is a new experience. I changed some my terminology to fit what they were used to, and the light bulbs seem to be coming on.” — Coach Tom Smith

Outlook: Moving from Class B to C will be a welcome step for Lisbon. These Greyhounds are a little more athletic then last year’s team. Many younger players were thrown
into the fray, and an intense summer schedule (team camp and 13 games) should help. Lisbon hopes to turn its quickness into pressure and use tiny Manchester Gym to its advantage. The Greyhounds also have the size to control the tempo in a halfcourt game.

McNamara won the 103 title and Stevens won the 112 regional title as freshmen. Outlook: Winthrop has its fourth different
coach in f ive yea rs. MacA r t hur, who teaches at the school, has successfully brought four seniors back to the program who had previously quit the game. He also has installed a new system emphasizing t en a c iou s, h a l f- c ou r t de fen s e. T he Ramblers don’t have great size, so they will rely on those quick feet and scrappy sensibilities. Foster is a returning starter. Of the freshmen, Morang should make an immediate impact. The Ramblers hope to snap a rare two-year tournament drought. Coach’s comment: “We hope our defense will keep us in games into the fourth quarter.
Coach: Andy Dube (second year) Last year’s record: 11-5-1 Returning players: Jason Laporte (F), Dan Condon (F), Tyler Bryant (F), Mitch Guerette (F), Nic Lacasse (F), Jarred Hanson (F), Ian Palmer (D), Zach Besette (D). Key losses: Connor Lacasse, Jon Dale, Rob Clark. Promising newcomers: Tyler Plante (G). Outlook: After a solid, 11-win campaign a
year ago, the MHW Hawks are looking to take that next step. Losing only three major contributors, the Hawks ought to be solid again this season, and should be firmly entrenched in the playoffs in Eastern A. Coach’s com ment : ” We w a nt to st ay consistent in beating the teams lower in the standings, and try to upset one or two of the top teams.” — Coach Andy Dube

Outlook: The Ramblers return just one
starter in Scott and about five points per game in offense. Winthrop is young and most of its post players are newcomers. Belanger, Carlson and Scott give the Ramblers three seasoned players. Coach’s comment: “We will be very young and lack experience, but I think we will get better every day. A tough opening part of the schedule will be a challenge, but we are all excited about seeing how much we can accomplish throughout the season.” — Coach Lonney Steeves

There is some talent returning on the boys’ side, and the girls should again be solid, if a little on the younger side. Both teams

Outlook: Rangeley has most of its team back from last year, including the Carrier sisters, Chantal (13 ppg) and Emily (12 ppg). The Abbott sisters are also returning starters, but Abby Abbott is out for the year with a knee injury. Letarte, Deery-DeRaps and Esty will see increased roles this year. Rangeley won’t be short on size with two girls taller than 6-feet and three others at 5-10. Key losses: Regan Sargent, Zeke Hall, Jordan Richard, George Seaman. Promising newcomers : Seniors — Luke E l l i ot t ( 6 -3 f or w a r d /c e n t e r) , R a n d y Thompson (5-7 guard). Outlook: The Lakers threw a tournament scare into top-seeded Forest Hills last year. Now, they rebuild with Morton as the only returning starter. Elliott is back after a
one-year absence and will provide needed size down low. The new faces saw plenty of playing time off the bench last year. With two-thirds of the teams making the Western Class D playoffs, Rangeley should have a good shot to return to the civic center. But they have 45 kids come out for this season, including a large, enthusiastic freshman class that could infuse an already young team. Rogers, Williams and Woodford are all coming off strong freshman seasons. The girls have the depth to make some noise in the sprints and relays. Key losses: Daniel Vaughn, T.J. O’Connor, Ben Field, Elek Pew. Promising newcomer: Sophomore — Nick Conrad (5-8 guard).
Outlook: Telstar improved its win total by seven games in 2010-11, but the season ended in disappointment with a close home loss to Traip in the opening round of the playoffs.
