TWO IN A ROW: Justin Eales and his players will have a great chance to make it two opening season wins when the Bombers host SMW Rovers this weekend. Photo: PETER MORGANTI
Peter Morganti FOOTBALL – MININERA ROUND TWO MININERA football resumes this weekend with players refreshed after the Easter break. The opening week offered up an interesting round of football, and for a few teams looking to challenge for a finals berth, this weekend can be considered a week of consolidation. Some might say it’s a bit early to be making a call on finals, but you must remember this season is only 16 rounds long and with the potential of an uneven fixture, teams will be looking to make hay while the sun shines. One call I will make, is barring a horrific run with injuries, Moyston Willaura and Tatyoon look morals for a top three finish; and with players to come back for last year’s premier team Wickliffe Lake Bolac, the final double chance spot may also be taken. Things at the top end of the ladder don’t look like changing much from 2013. If the above scenario is the case, we may then have six or seven teams fighting for the final two positions in the top five. Wins to Glenthompson Dunkeld, Penshurst, Lismore Derrinallum and Caramut in the opening round, gives those teams a great opportunity to open up a mini gap on some rivals with back-up wins this weekend. Three losing teams from the first week will be looking to get on the board ‌ losses this round will put them behind the eight ball. SMW Rovers, Hawkesdale Macarthur and Great Western will be striving to get win number one on the board. Assessing how these contenders go this weekend is the challenge, and for the teams involved putting your hand up early in the season could bear fruit come mid-August.

GLENTHOMPSON Dunkeld play host to Lismore Derrinallum, so winning becomes doubly important. Getting the four points against teams you’re duelling with for a final’s berth is worth double. The flip-side sees life a bit tougher with a loss! The Rams’ fitness after a solid preseason stood them in good stead against Great Western in the opening round, while the Demons had a soft kill
against Woorndoo Mortlake. On paper both teams look evenly match, with experienced players mixed with plenty of youngsters. At home the Rams probably have the advantage, especially with a forward line that has Scott Day and Chris McLeod both capable of kicking bags of goals.
Bombers v Dogs
PENSHURST were surprise winners against Hawkesdale Macarthur a fortnight ago. Many outside observers had them up against it based on big name player losses and also the fact the Eagles looked to have recruited better in the off season. But the Bombers got the job done, and probably should have won easier but for poor conversion. Up against SMW Rovers they have a fantastic chance to get back to back wins on the board. The Dogs were disappointing losing at home to Caramut, so the result of this match could have huge repercussions for their season going forward. Looking a week ahead they play early premiership favourites in Moyston Willaura, so it could be a disastrous start if they go down to the Bombers. At home the Bombers are favoured and a quick glance at next week for them sees Tatyoon away, so a two-zip start after this week gives them some breathing space.
Swans v Hawks
CARAMUT started its season in promising fashion with a solid win against SMW Rovers, but a much bigger test awaits this round. The Swans host Tatyoon, who once again look likely to be a force in 2014. While a win against Ararat doesn’t give much credence to being a dominant force, you only have to look at the players that have joined the club. Damian Cameron’s return with a handful of prominent recruits will only bolster a team that was so close to playing in the grand final last season. Yes, Aidan Bell and Tyler Cronin are significant losses, but the Hawks looked to have covered them plus some. With that said, the Swans look to have unearthed a few players and also have the likes of Todd Lamont and Ben Grinter in good early season form. But with that said, they will be up
against it and the Hawks should win.
Pumas v Eagles
AFTER a shock opening round loss to Penshurst, Hawkesdale Macarthur now has a huge challenge ahead of it in getting its season back on track. A road trip to Moyston will fully test the Eagles against an improved Pumas line-up. Improved you say ‌ well on face value they look a better unit than the team that played off in the last year’s grand final. Add hunger and they could be formidable as the season unfolds. Aidan Bell and Lachie Hamilton are two names among half a dozen that will bolster the Pumas, and a couple of reasons why they are early premiership favourites. For the Eagles that spells danger and more than likely another loss. They would need to improve dramatically on what we saw in Round One, and for mine the hungry and very fit Pumas will not let that happen.
Tigers v Pies
WHILE a 79 point opening round drubbing would send alarm bells ringing among most top teams, Wickliffe Lake Bolac has been fairly matter-of-fact about what to expect from it in the first month of the season. With up to a dozen players having delayed starts to 2014, we can expect the Pies to build as the season unfolds. This weekend they venture down the road to Woorndoo and regardless of personnel should have little trouble against the Tigers. For the Tigers they once again will battle against most opposition, let alone the cream of the competition.
Ararat Eagles v Lions
GREAT Western has a great opportunity to get on the board when it travels to Ararat. After being in the match against Glenthompson Dunkeld up until three quarter time, a lack of general fitness and/or fit players let them down in the opening round. With that match behind them and the addition of a few players, they should account for Ararat easily enough. To be a genuine final’s contender they must win easily. For Ararat it looks likely to be another long season and a jostle with Woorndoo Mortlake for the wooden spoon!
