Places and Spaces for Learning In these austere and ever changing times Scotland’s school, college and university estates and campuses are under more pressure than ever to deliver places and spaces for learning which not only create an environment in which academic excellence can thrive but which can also provide viable, sustainable places for public usage. Whether this is through the provision of sports facilities or libraries or other services our places for learning are the community hubs of the future. Like other nations we have many major agendas to address including an ambitious and progressive new educational framework in The Curriculum for Excellence, the changing role of Colleges in the community, college mergers as well as a diverse range of University estates challenged with creating centres of research and academic excellence in historic buildings which are subject to planning restrictions. Another key point for debate is what defines a good school, college or university; is it an environment which nurtures academic excellence, facilities which nurture and bring out the best in our young people on a practical level, the role of the facility within the community or simply the cost per square foot. Various agencies, institutions, organisations and individuals have differing views on this. This conference aims to address and discuss the issues, challenges and opportunities outlined above through a variety of expert speakers and thought leaders from both the public and private sectors.
