Places and Spaces for Health and Wellbeing 2015 Many of the underlying determinants of inequalities in health and well-being are environmental, therefore a concerted effort is required to create the right environments within our towns and cities. In Scotland, a growing number of organisations are working to promote improvement in this field, from the Scottish Government to NDGBs, private companies and charities.
Access to green spaces and recreation ground has long been considered a central factor of health and wellbeing, and more recently the benefits of play and the role of active travel have also been afforded greater significance. But in many of Scotland’s communities, there is still a limited access to good spaces which promote these activities.
This conference will explore the relationship between places and spaces in relation to both physical and mental health. Environmental, social and cultural connections will also be considered. The conference will provide expert analysis, evidence based case studies and a unique forum to engage and discuss with like-minded peers from across the country.
SPECTRUM EVENTS Spectrum Events produce conferences addressing issues and developments within a variety of fields including sustainability, building, planning, environment, funding and communities. Our events are designed to allow delegates to be informed on the issues in question by thought leaders and industry experts and also to engage with a variety of other stake holders and potential partners from across all the relevant industries and sectors to our subject matter. Our events, therefore, serve as genuine drivers for new business and new partnerships through wider cross-sector and inter-disciplinary interaction.
Who should attend this event? This event is of great relevance to: • local government planning or public health directors, managers or staff • central government planning or health and wellbeing professionals • town planners, planning consultants, health and wellbeing professionals • representatives from organisations working in public health, early years development, place making or the environment • Academics working in these same fields • Health and wellbeing, planning and environmental consultants
Agenda
19 MAY 2015 SARACEN HOUSE, GLASGOW

SESSION 2 Creating healthier urban environments: integrating health considerations into planning and design
SESSION 3 Facilitating Active Travel
9:20
Introduction from the Chair Diarmaid Lawlor, A+DS
9:30
The opening session will outline the focus of the event and explore the importance of green space and places which accommodate and encourage sports and recreation. The specific correlation to health will be examined by looking at the impact of surrounding environment upon health and wellbeing.
11:30 People are increasingly gravitating toward cities, leading to a rise in concentrated populations and urban living. This leads to a challenge of creating healthy spaces in built up areas where space is often restricted. The final session will look at measures which can be made towards creating healthier towns and cities.
13:45 Good design and peoplefriendly public space can help encourage active lifestyles. This session will focus on the places and spaces which facilitate active travel, particularly the provision of cycle lanes, paths and walkways which allow us to navigate our towns and cities without motorised transport. One of the most effective ways to build activity into the daily routine is through an active commute, but uptake of active modes of travel is hampered by a lack of suitable spaces which provide safe and convenient routes to schools and the workplace.
