Universal Credit SI magazine’s first annual Cross Sector Partnerships conference will bring together key figures from the third, public and private sector to examine how a variety of organisations with diverse skills and experiences can work together to tackle the inevitable issues that will be created with the introduction of the Universal Credit. Over the course of this full day event we will chronologically address the various negative impacts of the Universal Credit in the order in which they will be noticeable; housing, poverty and children and young people. Issues will be examined, not dwelled upon; lobbying and public outcry can no longer prevent the implementation of these changes. With this in mind, the event will bring together Scotland’s civic society, social entrepreneurs, heads of charities, business leaders, housing providers, policy makers, legislators and all other social innovators to discuss solutions, partnerships and innovations which can lessen the impact and deal with the social ramifications of these policies on behalf of the vulnerable individuals and families affected. Our event partners include Social Enterprise Scotland, ACOSVO, Scottish Charity Finance Director’s Group and Children in Scotland.

speakers include: FRASER KELLY Fraser joined Social Enterprise Scotland in July 2011. With a career that benefits from private, public and third sector experience and includes over 20 years working in the field of economic regeneration, Fraser describes this role with a mixture of excitement and privilege, working on behalf of an outstanding collection of member organisations and with a highly committed and experienced Board. From 2004 until 2011 Fraser held the post of Chief Executive with Castlemilk Economic Development Agency and Glasgow South East Regeneration Agency Ltd and, prior to that, he worked as Head of Economic Development at Inverclyde Council. Fraser is a former Board member of Cassiltoun Trust and Castlemilk and Carmunnock Community Windpark Trust.

NIGEL KERSHAW OBE Big Issue Invest, part of The Big Issue Group, is creating a “social merchant bank” – by social entrepreneurs, for social entrepreneurs. Its mission is to back sustainable social ventures that help tackle poverty and inequality. BII has raised and invested £20 million - largely private capital - in over 160 social enterprises. Prior to joining The Big Issue in 1994 Nigel worked as a project manager, litho printer and trade union official. He has founded three printing and publishing employee-owned social enterprises. Nigel is a Council member of Social Enterprise UK and on the Advisory Board of Big Society Capital. He received an OBE for his services to social enterprise.

Margaret Burgess MSP Margaret Burgess was elected in 2011 to represent Cunninghame South in the Scottish Parliament. After one year in the Parliament she became a member of the Scottish Government as Minister for Housing and Welfare. Her remit includes housing, communities, antipoverty measures and welfare. Margaret was born and bred in Ayrshire and has lived in the Cunninghame South constituency for 40 years. Before she became an MSP, Margaret was employed as manager of East Ayrshire Citizens Advice Bureau, and has also served as a board member of the national charity, Citizens Advice Scotland. Passionate about her community and a determined campaigner for her constituents and for Scotland, Margaret still tries to find space and spare time for a bit of leisure reading and hill walking.
