Estate Scale Renewables Architecture and Design Scotland (A+DS) is Scotland’s champion for excellence in placemaking, architecture and planning. A+DS is an Executive NDPB of the Scottish Government that aims to support the creation of well-designed environments that are ultimately, places where people want to be. We champion the highest standards in architecture and placemaking across all sectors, advocating a better understanding of the importance of quality design in both the public and private sectors. A+DS works through a number of established programmes to champion excellence and advocate the benefits of best practice in design. Our programmes are Urbanism, Design Review, Sust., Access to Architecture, Schools Design and Healthcare Design. Sust is a programme within A+DS that is dedicated to sustainable design in architecture and the built environment. Sust aims to raise public awareness of sustainable design and the contribution it can make in delivering a sustainable future, and improve an understanding of sustainable design for those commissioning new buildings. Based at A+DS’s Glasgow offices at The Lighthouse in Glasgow, we have recently expanded our physical resources through the opening of a sustainable Materials Library to promote ongoing activities in the construction sector and to complement our existing online Green and Funding Directories. This event is one of a series aimed at bringing together those who need information, support and resources, with those who can help them to deliver.

The Scottish Government’s AgriRenewables Strategy has a potentially huge impact on Scotland’s energy sector and rural economies, with far-reaching benefits for the whole country. Richard Lochhead, Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs has himself stated: “Scotland is currently experiencing a renewables revolution and I want to see farmers, crofters and land managers working with local communities to ensure they grasp the benefits for their businesses and the nation.” This event, supported by Scottish Land and Estates, will examine the renewables market and the opportunity for estate-scale programmes, the technologies available, pioneering projects which have already been undertaken by Scotland’s land owners and estate managers, skills and work force readiness and, crucially, funding.

SESSION ONE

Present and future markets As a nation with tremendous natural resources and land assets, Scotland and Scotland’s land owners possess the potential to be at the forefront of a renewable energy revolution. In this session we will explore the potential scope of the Scotland’s renewable energy market and how our country and our landscapes will react and adapt to this revolution.

SESSION TWO

Estate Scale Developments With some remarkable projects already underway, the importance of planning and preparation for the utilisation of our land assets cannot be underestimated. In this second session we look at this preparation and hear from Estate Managers who have first-hand experience of challenges and rewards of estate scale renewables.

SESSION THREE

Generating success for the future As with any growing sector, new challenges will emerge and innovative solutions must be found to generate opportunity. In our final session, we look at a variety of these key issues, including planning, training and funding.
