Fire barrier transitions & termination clarifications

Spectrum Specialty Builders Attn: Dan Pridemore 3902 West Valley Hwy North, Suite 500 Auburn, WA 98001 Project: Lincoln Square II RE: Expansion Joint Fire Barrier Information Fire Barrier Terminations

C/S Project #: 156859 Location: Bellevue, WA

Dan, On the above mentioned project it has come to our attention that there is concern with how the fire barrier will be terminated at various conditions. I have provided answers to the questions below. 1. How is the vertical fire barrier started/terminated at a horizontal surface (i.e. slab on grade)? The fire barrier will simply rest on the horizontal surface under slight compression to ensure a good seal. Test standards and details of this are not of existence to date. Since fire typically burns up, concern with the seal of the base of the fire barrier has not been raised in the industry as requiring a test standard. 2. Is fire sealant applied to contact points of the building components to terminations of the fire barrier? Constructions Specialties Multiflex/Monoflex fire barrier does not require any fire sealant for installation. All joints are pushed tight, if any joints cannot create a tight seal, extra ceramic blanket insulation can be used to pack it tight. 3. Is fire sealant required at any termination of the fire barrier where it does not transition into another fire barrier? No fire sealant is necessary (reference answer for question #2) 4. Is it recommended at the fire barrier terminations, that the fire barrier is lapped onto adjoining building components? No lapping is required, a “butt joint will suffice (reference answer for question #2) I am including our standard installation instructions for Multiflex/Monoflex. If you have any questions regarding the information herein or need anything additional please feel free to contact us. Sincerely, Construction Specialties Inc.
