Guide to Growing Table Grapes and Wine Grapes

The first thing you need to decide on before choosing the variety of grapes for growing in your vineyard is what you want them to be used for. Do you want to grow grapes for wine making? Or maybe you want to grow these fruits as table grapes, which are grapes made for consumption while they are still fresh. Different grape varieties are used for different purposes. It's best to decide if you want to grow table grapes or wine grapes before picking a grape variety.

If your fruits are going to be used for growing table grapes, then you need to know a couple of things. Table grapes have lower sugar content than wine grapes, but are actually more flavorful when they are eaten. The flavors from their juices are not compatible with fermentation though, and wines made from these fruits are weak and blandtasting because of their low sugar content. Occasionally, some people may incorporate these grapes in their wine making, but this generally produces low quality wine.

Table grapes have three types of grape varieties, and these are green, red and blue-black. Green grapes include Thompson Seedless, Calmeria, Perlette, Sugraone and Italia Autumn King Seedless Grape. Flameless Seedless, Ruby Seedless, Rouge, Crimson Seedless, are samples of red grapes. Blue-black grapes are Autumn Royal, Fantasy Seedless, Beauty Seedless and Muscat Hamburg. Typically, table grapes flourish more in hot, dry climates. They are quite susceptible to injury from the cold weather and acquire diseases like black and bunch rot. Hybridization has developed new varieties that are suitable for cold weather though, and they can now be grown in the more temperate climate regions in the US.

Two types of grape varieties are used in making wine, and these are red and white grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot are some of the wellknown red varieties. Syrah is a dark-skinned grape variety that is grown in different parts of the world and is used in producing a powerful, flavored red wine that is very popular. Popular white varieties include Chenin Blanch, Riesling, Sylvaner, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Pinot Gris wine grapes are made into a low acid, white wine of excellent taste and color. This unique flavor has been described as a combination of pear and spice cake taste. The fruit it produces is a deep yellow to copper color. These are grown in cool to hot temperatures.

Grape growing is truly an undertaking that anyone can get into. So choose a variety based on what your grapes will be used for, and before you know it, you'll be on your way to growing a healthy, thriving vineyard filled with abundant fruits.
