Culture Vanishing culture – deep Iceland This exhibition depicts the life of the farmers, deserted farms and the landscape of one the oldest farming communities in the deep fjord Ísafjarðardjúp in the western part of Iceland. Hardship and harsh weather conditions have put a mark on their daily life from the times of the first settlers on Iceland. The area is isolated and unspoiled and spectacular in its grandeur. Nevertheless, some farmers still cling to the traditional way of life rooted in the oldest settlement in the country. ‘Vanishing culture – Deep Iceland’ is showing until 11 September at the Reykjavík Museum of Photography.

A boy is detained in a closed prison. He has murdered two people who moved into his grandfather’s old house - the house where he grew up. After-party from hell After a university faculty party, middle aged couple Martha and George, invite a young couple, Nick and Honey, for an afterparty with a few nocturnal social games. The games draw the unwitting guests into their bitter and frustrated relationship in an orgy of drunkenness, lust, lies and humiliation. ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ is a neo-classical masterpiece by Edward Albee. The first performance in 1962 was an overnight success with both audiences and critics alike, winning many prizes. The play is one of the most performed contemporary classics and has its premiere at Oslo Nye Teater on 1 September.

Nick Brandt is back at Fotografiska
Since 2001, fine art photographer Nick Brandt has been documenting the vanishing natural world and animals of East Africa through his haunting, majestic portraits. Fotografiska presents his new exhibition ‘Inherit The Dust’ with Brandt’s powerful and deeply disturbing series of epic panoramas; life sized portraits of animals placed and photographed at the sites where they used to roam. This exhibition demonstrates the terrible deterioration of the landscape and the absence of animals, because of the impact of man, in a heartbreaking way. Shown at Fotografiska in Stockholm from 20 May to 11 September.

there before 20.00. If eating out is more your thing then the city has a plethora of good restaurants, in addition to the 16 which have been awarded with Michelin stars. Those that have opened since April include Jagger in Vesterbro (Fast Food), Chick by Chicks (Chicken), Kødbyen at Harvey San (Asian) and Madklubbens latest addition, Steakhouse Royal where you can enjoy a good steak. Don’t forget the cafés, with classics such as Sommersko, Café Viktor, Café Europa, Royal Smushi café and La Glace, which is Denmark’s oldest coffee shop. Over Storebaelt and up in the north of Jylland, lies another big town, Aarhus, which among other things, is known for being a place to party, especially in
summer. Primarily, it is the area around the Latin Quarter and Vadestedet where people gather. Aarhus also offers beautiful beaches and lovely nature. A little further north is Skagen, one of the more famous holiday paradises in Denmark. Enjoy the small town life, Skagen shrimps, and extensive beaches. Photo: Thomas Madsen

Want to take it a little easier, then visit Den Sorte Diamant (the Black Diamond) – Copenhagen’s Royal Library, have a coffee in the cafeteria, or visit Søren Kierkegaard Restaurant, named after the famous writer. A stone’s throw from there is Havnebadet, one of five harbour bathing spots in Copenhagen, where you can cool off when it gets too hot. Other places worth a visit in Oslo include the Museum of Modern Art, Edvard Munch Museum and the Astrup Fearnley Museum. Up for a swim? Then visit Huk and Paradisebukta, two of Oslo’s more popular beaches or maybe take a cycle tour along the Aker River, which today houses many cafés. Going south, we end up in nearby Drammen, which among other things offers Drammensbadet, Norway's largest bathing complex and Bragernes Torg, reputedly the largest open square in Scandinavia. Further west we come eventually to Stavanger, where Lysefjord can give you a taste of the country’s fjords and lakes. The fantastic scenery offers the possibility of both sedate sailing and more demanding mountain climbing, cliff jumping or even a motorcycle rally.
Further north, lies cultural Bergen, home to composer Edvard Grieg. It plays host to both an international film festival and Northern Europe’s longest jazz festival, which takes place during Festspillene in Bergen every year. This year it takes place between 25 May - 8 June. Would you rather explore the nature on offer then check out Bergen Base Camp, Voss Extreme Sports Week at the end of June, and a number of excursions including cycling, hiking, kayaking, deep sea fishing or sailing, to name but a few. Bergen is also the gateway to the western fjords of Norway, offering both shorter and longer excursions, and it is of course the start for the legendary Hurtigruten passenger cruises.

A little further north brings us to Oslo and most tourists will sooner or later end up on Karl Johan, the city’s main street. In this area and in the streets around Grünerløkka, Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen, are some of the city’s most popular places, including Alex Sushi, Sjømagasinet, Mrs. K, and not least the classic Teaterkafeen. Or why not visit Schrøders restaurant where Norway’s current crime king Jon Nessbø writes
his famous books. You can always pay a visit to the Opera House, at Bjørkvika, another exciting area that has undergone a major change in recent years, with some very striking architecture.

Other highlights are the white cliffs of Møn, the wonderful island of Bornholm, Legoland in Billund for anyone young at heart, or little Helsingør. This year it is 400 years since Shakespeare died and one of his most famous plays, Hamlet, takes place here, at Kronborg Castle. From Helsingør it is easy to continue along the coast which stretches all the way down to Copenhagen, via the Louisiana art museum and Bellavista, a residential area which was designed by the designer Arne Jacobsen, or via the small villages to Hornbæk, and further up to Gilleleje. Both of these sections are easily accessible by bike so you can really enjoy the nature and also stop for a refreshing dip along the way.

Nordic holidays Yet another leap north is Trondheim, another nature and cultural gem offering good hiking, fishing and cycling. Almost in the middle of all this, three hours from Bergen, five from Oslo and six from Trondheim, is the Sognefjord, Norway’s largest fjord, which stretches for over 200 kilometres. Here you can enjoy the most of what you associate with Norway, and maybe a little more. Glacier walks, fjord tours, cycling, fishing and kayaking for example. Photo: Jussi Hellsten
Helsinki
Going eastwards we come to the north of Finland. Check out Vaasa and Wasalandia, an amusement park for the whole family. Nearby is the Kvarken Archipelago, which is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Travelling down the E12, we pass a large part of the Finnish countryside, before we eventually end up in Helsinki. The city has a lot to offer in culinary terms and
of course Finnish design. These include a Design Walk where you will learn about Finnish design traditions and architecture, set amongst stylish buildings, museums, the hip local shops as well as the latest fashion and design trends. The nightlife is lively around the bars and cafes during the summer. Recommended are Ursula, located along the waterfront at Sveaborg, Piritta, with the same owner, which also doubles as a nightclub and Café Bar Fanny, which has live music at the weekends. Other tips are the terrace bars down by Mikonkatu, Soul Kitchen, along with Siltanen in the Kallio district, Moscow run by filmmaker Kaursmäkis and Corona, as well restaurants such as Boathouse, Saari, and Saslik, for those who love to check out Helsinki by night. Also worth a visit are Ataljee Bar at the top of the Torni restaurant, the tram garage, which today has become Korjaamo Kulturfrabrik, with lots of happenings, concerts and a lively bar. Or take Spårakoffs pub tram, said to be the only one of its kind in the world. Here you can enjoy views of Helsinki, with a beer at arm’s length. The popular Esplanade Park has musical performances every day during the summer, and at Pihlajasaariön you can soak up the sun rays, if that’s your thing. From Helsinki the E18 takes us to Turku, Finland’s oldest city, which is known as the cradle of Finnish culture offering art, music and design and an archipelago of 20,000 islands. The town’s landmarks
are the Cathedral and the Royal Palace and there are plenty of opportunities to get out into the archipelago via boat. Inside Turku is an old market hall from 1896 which offers all sorts of culinary experiences and highly recommended is a pub tour where you can quench your thirst in a number of unusual environments such as The School, Old Bank and Uusi Apteekki or new pharmacy. A pub crawl usually needs at least one lavatory stop and Turku can do it in a slightly different way. Puuntorin Vessa is namely the first and probably only toilet in the world with full rights. Needless to say toilet humour thrives in this area of the world! That is just a taste of what the Nordic countries can offer. A few good reasons why us Scandinavians should stay at home this year.

Allone
Safety first with new app
T
he world’s first free alarm app, Allone, was launched last year, developed by Swedish Company, Allone AB. The app turns your smart phone into an alarm that gives off a loud sound, alerting your loved ones and anyone else nearby who also have Allone installed. Additionally, you can allow selected people to follow you in real time so that they can come to the rescue if there is an accident. The idea of being able to sound an alarm when people are out of listening and viewing range came from father and businessman Anders Paulson. During their time abroad Anders had often felt worried about his daughters’ and his own safety. “The idea for the app came from my years in Brazil, where I travelled a lot and often felt insecure. Would I go to the right or left when I came out of a meeting in the evening, or was it safe to go home at night from the restaurant? The constant concern for me and my family was the basis for Allone. But my year abroad has also given me an incredible amount of knowledge and experience and an understanding of other cultures, which I think is an advantage now that we are working in several different countries”, says Anders, founder and CEO of Allone AB. In the spring of 2014 Anders started working on the app and by autumn of the same year, he had started the project to create a personal alarm for his now 17-year-old daughter Filippa, who has also helped her father with the development of the app. During the development Anders realised that there was a great need for this type of alarm app that allows you to follow friends and family as well as an opportunity to
help fellow citizens in emergencies. By simply pressing a button, the phone becomes an alarm, which may deter violent crime and reduce the likelihood that someone in your vicinity is exposed to violent and precarious situations. “I want my daughter and other children, women and men to be able to feel safe, whether its in town, in the forest, on a running trail or on horseback. It is my hope that Allone is one for all and all for one. Allone can helps everyone feel safer”, says Anders Paulson. Today the app has over ten thousand users in Sweden and the number is increasing all the time. This March IT pioneer Lars Björk, CEO of Qlik, and Peter Hauggaard, former CEO of Oriflame, came in as investors and board members for a future global expansion. “We started Allone in India at the beginning of the year and will soon travel to New Delhi for our first major launch. We believe that Allone can provide security to the many vulnerable women and children who live there. In addition, we are investigating the possibility of launching the app in Turkey, Russia, Brazil and Africa in the coming year. Starburst Festival
Summer festivals As the temperature rises, music lovers flock to massive festivals around the Nordic countries to see their favorite artists live and feed off the energy of fellow fans. And with each passing year, there are more and more options to choose from. Here’s a selection of this summer’s hottest music festivals: Roskilde Festival 25 June - 2 July
Roskilde Festival, just 25 minutes outside Copenhagen’s city centre by train, is the largest culture and music festival in Northern Europe and has existed since 1971. It’s a unique and allencompassing experience, where music, events, food and activities create an intense sense of community among the audience. Profits are donated to initiatives for children and young people, and other humanitarian organisations. Selected artists: Neil Young, New Order, PJ Harvey, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
Secret Solstice Festival Roskilde Festival

Øya Festival 9 August - 13 August
Red Hot Chilli Peppers Øya Festival
In August every year the Øya Festival draws around 60,000 music lovers to Oslo’s east side, where they can enjoy four days of everything from international stars to up-and-coming artists. The Club Night on Tuesday, with concerts at many small clubs, serves as a warm-up for the four days in the Tøyen Park festival area. It has grown quickly since its modest start in 1999 and has now become one of Norway’s biggest festivals. Selected artists: Ane Brun, New Order, Jamie XX, Eagles Of Death Metal, Travis Scott, Haim.

86th International Motor Show in Geneva This spring’s biggest motor show took place in Geneva during March attracting 687,000 visitors. The show gave us a great mix of new production and concept cars. We take a closer look at some of the world debuts and major launches.
Sporty, low and hence in everyday terms, uncomfortable bodies don’t seem to be as trendy any more. Now it is time for the more practical and high-sided SUVs and crossovers. A prime example is Seat’s new compact SUV Ateca which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show. The car’s lower section is significantly high, similar to the upcoming SUV Volkswagen Tiguan, as the new Ateca also shares the same platform. This however is no bad idea. The body has however a Seat look and has somewhat smaller dimensions than its stablemate from Germany.

A worthy heir to the throne Volvo’s new large multi-purpose V90, is the new heir to the V70. At 494 cm in length, it is 13 cm longer than the V70, three cm wider and a touch lower making it sleeker than the outgoing model. Furthermore, the wheelbase has been increased to 294 cm, providing more interior space. Sleek lines and pretty small squares characterize its trendy design. A real head turner. Photo: Volvo Cars

Renault Talisman – soft lines Renault is on the boil. Last year they presented four new models, the big crossover Espace, middleweight SUV Kadjar, middle class Talisman and the compact Mégane. During the spring they are launching the sleek and spacious multi-purpose model, Sports Tourer by Talisman on the Swedish market. The size of the Renault Talisman makes it a competitor to the Peugeot 508, but can offer even more exciting technical solutions than its rivals, such as four-wheel steering. After many years of development, British sports car manufacturer Aston Martin showed off its new sports coupe DB11 which shall match the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and MercedesAMG GT S in both appearance and driving performance. Under its elongated bonnet sits a newly developed 5.2 - litre V12 engine with twin turbo, which with its 608 hp and 700 Newton metres of torquevectoring accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and up to a top speed of 320 km/h.

Fastest... and dearest The new Bugatti Chiron has an unreal dynamic design and incredible speed resources. It has an 8-litre, 16-cylinder, W-engine of 1500 hp and torque of 1600 Nm plus a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with an electronically controlled Haldex drive which distributes the torque to the four wheels. Full gas acceleration 0-100 km/h has been factory clocked at just 2.5 seconds, 0-200 km/h in astonishing 6.5 seconds and to 300 km/h in 13.6 seconds. Top speed is 420 km/h! Just 500 models will be produced and will cost around 3.2 million euros.

Audi’s new crossover
Audi’s new compact crossover Q2 can handle both economic and everyday driving with more sporty exercises both on or off road. The 20cm of ground clearance increases accessibility on more uneven surfaces. The new Q2 is driven by fuel-efficient petrol and diesel engines. It is available with front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive option. The car has a high practical but softly rounded body and has a sleeker appearance than many other SUVs and crossovers.

Less is more
With the new 718 Boxster, Porsche has created a stylish and worthy successor to the outgoing convertible Boxster. Just like the big sibling 911 its downsizing and turbo-charged engines that are the future. Like earlier generations of the Boxster/Cayman it has a mid-mounted engine, however, not the six-cylinder boxer, but a four-cylinder turbocharged boxer engine. The entry-level model has a new 2.0 litre four-cylinder boxer engine of 300 hp and the Boxster S, a new 2.5-litre boxer four of 350 hp. The new models are faster and more efficient than their predecessors. Porsche 718 Boxster
Open top with plenty of oomph The Mercedes C-Class Cabriolet with fabric roof has a smooth body form in tune with a dynamic front. The car is based on the C-Class coupe with seating for four adults in the low seats and 285 liters in the moderately sized cargo area. Choose from efficient, powerful and even more powerful petrol engines or diesel engines all equipped with direct injection. From 156-333 hp. If that isn’t enough then go for the AMG C 43 4MATIC with its petrol V6 engine and twin turbo at 367 hp. Rear wheel drive comes via a six-speed manual gearbox or ninespeed automatic and the 4MATIC versions offer four-wheel drive.
Kia is entering the hybrid war and challenging the Toyota Prius with a compact crossover called Niro. It has an economically-tuned petrol engine coupled to an integrated electric motor/generator, where the electric motor gives much needed additional power at red lights for example in order to reduce fuel consumption. As the battery is so small you can not drive the car purely electrically. Kia Niro’s high ceilings and almost vertical windows give an airy interior and the good ground clearance means that you wont be scraping the car against thick snow or grass verges.

Shakespeare During 2016 we will commemorate the memory of William Shakespeare. 400 years have passed since Shakespeare died, leaving behind a treasure trove of plays, poems and sayings that still grip the imagination of audiences around the world.
The 400 year old bard T

he Bard of Avon is believed to have died on his birthday, 23 April, in his native Stratfordupon-Avon in 1616. Every year productions of his works including Othello, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet sell out thanks to the beauty of their language and universal themes of love, revenge, sorrow and comedy. And the poet can even be credited for his use of common sayings which are still in use today, such as “dead as a doornail” from Henry VI and “fancy free” from A midsummer night’s dream. During 2016 Danish theatre group HamletScenen will contribute to the world’s celebration of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, and at the same time celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Shakespeare performance tradition at Hamlet’s Castle, Kronborg, in Helsingør. 200 years ago a group of soldiers performed Hamlet at Kronborg to mark the bicentennial of Shakespeare’s

death. That first performance in 1816 laid the foundation for the current Shakespeare Festival, the world’s longest recurring event honouring the writer. Since then, the festival has staged performances featuring the likes of Sir Laurence Oliver, Kenneth Branagh, Jude Law and others. In this fantastic double-anniversary year, the Shakespeare Festival at Hamlet’s Castle will be spread over three weeks – and presents plenty of international Shakespeare productions, all of which have been specially chosen to celebrate the 200th anniversary. Shakespeare Open Air Cinema and Shakespeare in Concert will also form part of the program. This event is not to be missed for lovers of theatre, history, culture and of course William Shakespeare. The Shakespeare Festival runs from 1 - 21 August.

Technology Cat S60
Durable work mobile Cat makes some of the market’s most durable mobile phones. They can withstand shock, can be frozen and dropped into deep water. Now available is a model featuring the latest Android OS with relatively good performance, at least to be a ‘rough’ model. But perhaps the coolest with the Cat S60 is that it has a built-in infra-red camera. It’s a little too brutal in the design for the common person, but construction workers will love the Cat S60.
Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus
Budget Mobile with surround sound Lenovo have an exciting mobile in the budget segment. Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus is a 200-euro mobile with a metal chassis and 5-inch full HD screen. On the inside is a midrange processor from Qualcomm which is pretty impressive considering the price tag. A cool feature with Vibe K5 Plus (and the scaled-down sibling K5) is that it also supports Dolby Atmos in the speaker and headphone output.
Virtual Reality
Finally we can take our own VR videos It all started when Samsung dragged Facebook-founder Mark Zuckerberg up on stage during a Galaxy S7-event at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year. VR products and solutions then continued to blossom during the event. HTC Vive has now a release date and LG showed off their new VR glasses for the new G5. Though the best news is that Sony, LG and others will soon release cameras enabling us to produce our own VR material.
Sony XA, X, X Performance
Brand new mobile series Sony releases three new handsets under the umbrella name X. The mobiles are in the middle and premium price brackets. As usual, they have really interesting cameras, at least the two dearer models X and X Performance. The design is a little different than normal, with a metal or plastic back instead of the typical Sony glass. The bad news is that only the most expensive X Performance is waterproof. The new handsets will be available between May and July.
ZTE Axon Mini
Surprisingly advanced medium level mobile ZTE always tend to invest in affordable mobiles. That also applies to the Axon Mini. But the thing that made us take notice wasn’t the price tag, but the cutting-edge technology in the form of force touch. Force touch makes the mobile sensitive not only by pressing but also how hard you press. Press loosely on an icon to open it, push hard to get up a context menu - and so on. ZTE Axon Mini will be released soon and should cost just under 400 euros.
Huawei P9
Double Leica-certified cameras Huawei’s new flagship P9 has an extremely high finish, in a class with the iPhone 6s and Samsung Galaxy S7. It is equipped with Huawei’s latest processor and features a compact design despite the large 5.2 inch full-HD screen. But the biggest news is that Huawei P9 is equipped with two cameras on its rear, developed in collaboration with renowned camera brand Leica. One camera captures colour images, the other black and white. Besides being able to shoot directly in black and white the image quality will be better in darker lighting conditions. Quite simply sharper images and less noise. Huawei P9 launches 6 May.

Uppy – the genius flyer Tired, worn-out and not on top form after a long flight is something most of us have experienced one time or another. Someone who has felt like that often och got fed up with the feeling is Olle Marköö, founder to Uppy! – the genius flyer, a new product which helps the body regain its balance. Uppy is a water-soluble tablet which contains vitamins and minerals which help the body recover after a long flight, where the body loses a lot of salt and minerals. If you are looking for a tropical atmosphere this summer then travel no further than Germany. South sea paradise Tropical Island is Europe’s largest tropical holiday world. Located 60 kilometres south of Berlin, it is now expanding with a 35,000 m2 large outdoor section and is open all year round. Another tip is Germany’s largest and most popular island, Rügen, which actually was Swedish until 1815. The beautiful scenery and great beaches, along with a little old-fashioned seaside resort romance, especially in the towns of Binz and Selin, attracts thousands of visitors to the island each year.
