Entertainment A true legend enters Aalborgs House of Music He constituted one half of one of the most successful duos of the 1960’s, namely Simon and Garfunkel. He has subsequently enjoyed a long solo career that now brings him to House of Music. Art Garfunkel is a singer, songwriter, actor and poet, and moreover he masters several different instruments. He is, however, still best known for new classics such as Scarborough Fair, Bright Eyes and Bridge Over Troubled Water. At the House of Music in Aalborg, 2 March.
Strömstedt looks back Niklas Strömstedt takes to the stage at Hamburger Börs in Stockholm, with the newly written show Megalomania. Performed Thursday-Saturday with the premiere on 21 January. Niklas has scoured the country to find the coolest band, best director and the loveliest sidekicks. Additionally, the menu at the Börs reflects the time he could afford to occasionally visit restaurants - from the 80’s onwards. He will share everything - both the hits and the misses.
Snow White – the Musical The producers of the hit show Wizard of Oz are back with Snow White – The Musical. The Grimm Brothers classic tale has been rejigged by Robert Dröse to a modern family show with lavish outfits, wonderful stage sets, and with a large ensemble of both children and adults. Among the cast are Nanne Grönvall,Yohio, Niclas Wahlgren and Ellen Bergström. The show has it’s premiére at Maximteatern in November followed by a tour around Sweden during the spring.
The world’s largest skifest Tens of thousands of spectators take their place inside Holmenkollen Arena or along the cross-country ski tracks for the annual Holmenkollen Ski Festival. This highlight of the nordic winter sport dates back to 1892, and draws enthusiasts (both competitors and spectators) every year to Holmenkollen, home to Oslo’s famous ski jump, and Nordmarka, the big forested area north of the city centre. This is a great opportunity to watch the worlds best winter athletes in action. Takes place from 4-7 March. 04.15 BEST WAY 7
Entertainment Spectacular action sports This winter Oslo is hosting the X Games, the biggest and most prestigious action sports event in the world.The competition will take place 25-28 February at three different arenas, two of them brand new. Tøyen will host big air skiing and snowboarding, and the skateboarders will be competing in Building 13 at Filipstad. Skiing and snowboarding superpipe will take place in Wyllerløypa in Oslo Winter Park. In addition to all the sports competitions there will be a big concert at Tøyen on Saturday 27 February.
Star Wars returns again One of cinema’s truly legendary franchises finally returns with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which sees a new generation of heroes fighting for the freedom of the galaxy. We return to George Lucas’ beloved universe to find it dramatically changed, and a new enemy has risen from the Empire’s ashes. Fresh faces Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron must unite with old warriors Luke, Han and Leia. The Dark Side has awoken. But so has the Light. See Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher among others in this spectacular movie which premieres 16 December.
Enya back with a new album The singer, Enya, is back with a new album Dark Sky Island which is released on 20 November. Enya Patricia Brennan teamed up with producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan in spring 2012 after being inspired by Roma’s work with a number of poetry collections, amongst other things, the Island of Sark “Dark Sky Island” off the coast of Normandy . Enya began her musical career in 1980 and her six studio albums have topped the charts worldwide and she has sold more than 80 million albums and singles.

Fight between good and evil In February the Ny Teater in Copenhagen will present one of its biggest, most lavish and expensive creations to date. It’s also probably the season’s biggest musical production in Denmark. Jekyll & Hyde the musical is a romantic thriller about the struggle between good and evil based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale. Music by Frank Wildhorn and screenplay and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. Premieres 11 February.

6 great ski resorts you’ve never heard of! Many of the most popular ski resorts are also unfortunately among the dearest. Costs tend to spiral when you consider lift passes, accommodation and food. Therefore, we decided to share a few tips on more unfamiliar destinations where you can stay cheaply, with no crowding on the slopes and still find the perfect powder snow.
Bansko, Bulgarien
Bulgaria’s largest ski resort boasts the finest slopes and the best lift system in the country, though packages, lift passes, equipment hire and lessons costs around half as much as in most other ski resorts.You also get food and drinks for a quarter of the price compared to the most popular tourist destinations. Lots of snow and short lift queues make Bansko an attractive and sought after destination for skiing. The Bulgarian national team also trains here.

Alyeska, Alaska
Alaska’s leading ski resort is just 60 km from Anchorage. The journey there is stunning and has been named one of North America’s ten most beautiful stretches of road. The area is not huge, but the experience is memorable. The mountains here offer more of a challenge, but there are of course easier slopes for non-experts. Experience everything from heliskiing and extreme off-piste to normal piste skiing in a unique environment. With 68 lovely slopes and nine lifts you have a choice out of the ordinary.

Hokkaido’s largest ski resort has 30 lifts, has almost twice as much natural snow as Europe’s snowiest ski resorts, and you’re even allowed to go off-piste. The snow and the slopes are fantastic and the range of spas and après-ski are unmatched. This is one of the world’s best ski resorts, but still such a well-kept secret that it is still far from being overdeveloped. After a day’s skiing, there are hot springs, called onsen, to enjoy. They are embedded in forest and snow and it’s incredibly pleasant to sink into the warm water with a cold beer in hand.
Portillo is a ski resort located high in the Andes in a huge beautiful valley with a large lake at the bottom. The resort consists almost exclusively of the prestigious Hotel Portillo, which was built in the 1940s. Imagine an outdoor pool, perfect service and leather décor and you understand that the experience here is of the more unusual kind. There are 18 different slopes for skiers and snowboarders and 12 lifts. Add soaring condors, tons of powder snow, friendly people, a magnificent landscape and you get a fantastic experience.
Situated near the fjörds, this ski centre has an incredibly beautiful location overlooking the Helgelansdsk coast from the top of Tverrfjället. An area with spectacular mountain peaks that provide skiing that the rest of the country can only dream of. The staff on the slopes work on a voluntary basis so it’s all genuine fun skiing. The ski hut doesn’t serve touristy fast food, instead offering homemade waffles and sandwiches. For fifty Norwegian Crowns you can be drawn by tracked vehicles to an altitude of around 1,000 metres and experience more powder snow than ever before.
Popova Sapka is ideal for those looking for a secret getaway. You can find this gem higher up than most East European ski resorts, nestled among the rounded peaks of the Dinaric Mountains. The lifts may be a little old fashioned, but the soft unmarked slopes are definitely worth a visit, especially as you will have them all to yourself. The distinct elements from different cultures makes Macedonia an exciting place away from the slopes with noticeable influences of Greek, Serbian and Bulgarian culture.

From the beginning Stöten was a day trip alternative for Sälen visitors who wanted better conditions for skiing, with tougher slopes in the scenic surroundings. Granfjället rises 850 metres above sea level, and therefore poses new challenges due to its better descents and inclines than the neighbouring slopes. But the downhill run just whetted the appetite and soon visitors were not content to stay just over the day. Cottages and hotels began to emerge, and now it is a long established destination with slopes that have the capacity to stage Swedish Championships in both the slalom and giant slalom, World Championships in Telemark and World Cup competitions in Alpine skiing. Today, Stöten is a complete ski centre big enough in which to spend the entire holiday.You can find everything you need: accommodation, restaurants, ski-school, activities, bath & spa, ski shop, conference facilities. Of course there are both slopes for those who have been in the Alps more than once, and for those who have never been on a pair of skis before explains Magnus Dovallius, Marketing Director at Sälen. Stöten is the most northerly resort in Sälen. From the top of the World Cup slope (which housed a World Cup final in 1990 and the Swedish Alpine Championships 2007), one can enjoy the expansive views of both the Swedish and Norwegian mountains. And it is a popular destination: last season, the number of ski days increased by almost 22% compared with the year before, which was the largest increase in the Swedish ski world that year.
Fascinating enough, it has still not made it feel ‘crowded’, and one need not worry about being stranded in long lift queues. They have been continuously expanding capacity and improving the facilities. They have also invested large sums in their snow-making systems, both in being able to offer an even better snow guarantee for visitors and to make sure that snow production is made as energy efficient as possible. “For us it is quite natural to always have an environmental aspect to all our investment. The experiences we offer our visitors are based on the fact that you can enjoy and move around in the fantastic nature, and we must do everything we can to minimize our environmental impact,” says Magnus Dovallius. Even BEST WESTERN Stöten Ski Hotel has a clear environmental focus, and was the first hotel in Sälen that received the Swan Eco-label. This means taking a holistic approach to environmental efforts, including reducing the use of chemical products for cleaning and dishwashing as well as reducing water consumption. Purchase of other eco-labelled goods and
services also contribute to the hotel’s reduced environmental impact. Guests are also offered a number of locally produced alternatives to dinner. This is a hotel located right in the heart of Stöten and offers a unique opportunity to combine a comfortable stay with skiing - here you step out of the hotel and find yourself in the middle of the main slope. With its central location on Stötentorget, hotel guests are close to everything, and need not even leave the building to visit the restaurant Brasseriet where one can find both après ski and the nightclub. Prior to this season, the hotel has been completely refurbished, and all 43 rooms have been completely redesigned with modern alpine inspired furnishings. “Now you have the chance to stay as the first guest in a completely fresh hotel - it is truly a unique and special feel - in a hotel located right in the centre of everything, and yet offering a quiet, relaxed environment,” says Magnus Dovallius.

Skiing’s biggest challenge! The world’s oldest, longest and biggest ski race takes place on 6 March 2016. The event attracts over 15,000 skiers each year from all around the world. The 90km cross country event has become an somewhat of an institution. We take a closer look. Text: Peter Wiklund.
Seven key locations
Along the 90km course between Sälen and Mora are seven key locations that are particularly important for the participants – Vasaloppet controls. Mångsbodarna, Evertsberg, Oxberg and the other checkpoints have become famous vantage points for the large crowds that come to see athletes during the classic ski race. Smågan Vasaloppet first control station is also its youngest. In 1984 became the official control (after having been tested the year before) and was well received by the skiers who thought 24km to Mångsbodarna was too long to go without energy replenishment and service. Which is not surprising, as immediately after the start there are a few upward climbs that easily use up the life out of the skier. Elite skiers had actually private controls at Smågan during 1960s, but it was another two decades before everyone got the service.
Mångsbodarna During the first Vasaloppet in 1922 there were only three controls along the course, of which Mångsbodarna was the first. Now the participants can enjoy the first mug of blueberry soup, as Smågan serves just only water and sports drink. There is currently only one person living permanently in Mångsbodarna: Linnéa Götesson, whose late husband Birger was the control manager many times between 1930-1964, when their farm served as the Vasaloppet Control. Linnéa works to this day as a volunteer, serving blueberry soup along the track.

Risberg After a sharp rise followed by a steep descent the skiers reach Risberg, created in 1963 after course manager, Mora-Nisse changed the Vasaloppets course to add in this control. Here you can refuel from the complete Vasaloppet menu of sports drink, blueberry soup, broth, water and biscuits. Evertsberg This was checkpoint two in the first ever race, and at that time also the first timing control. Since 1970, the Mountain Prize is given to the skier that comes first to Evertsberg, and it is very rare that someone has been fastest at both Evertsberg and at the finish in Mora.
This control is just over halfway, and a lovely descent of seven kilometres lies ahead. Oxberg The last of the three original controls come after “Sighs hill” where the height difference of 50 meters has led to more than one Vasaloppet being decided on that particular hill. At Oxberg, a village with about 150 inhabitants, starts several of the shorter races which form a part of Vasaloppet week. Here is also home to Vasaloppets snow factory which can produce up to 100,000 m3 of snow.
Hökberg If you’re not in a hurry then take the opportunity to enjoy the stunning views over the lakes and mountain around this checkpoint, which like Risberg, was added in 1963 at the initiative of Mora-Nisse. He actually put Hökberg on the map in 1945 when he stopped to wax his errant skis one last time, a few kilometres before the current checkpoint, when he was just nine minutes behind the leader. He eventually caught the leader a few kilometres before the finish and won by a margin of 1 minute, 37 seconds. Eldris The last 20km of the race goes through relatively easy terrain, and the last chance to refuel comes with nine kilometres to go. By now watch the enthusiastic audience help the participants cope over the last few energy sapping kilometres to the finish line in Mora.

When second became the winner
1982 was the first time a Vasaloppet winner was disqualified. Frenchman Jean-Paul Pierrat was first past the post, but was disqualified by the jury for having changed skis several times during the race. The runner-up, Lasse Frykberg from Mora, was awarded the victory.
Record number of siblings in the same race
In 1968, the Berg brothers, all nine of them, from the village Bodsjöböle in Jämtland started Vasaloppet: Lars, Stig, Hugo, Gunnar, Eric, Peter, John, Oskar and Nils. The youngest was 22 and the oldest 47 - and all the forestry workers. All nine completed the course. An unmatched record!
Everyone got called back
On a few occasions, we have had a false start in Vasaloppet. Though 1959 was the most awkward. For the first time, there were over 1,000 starters when there was a false start. It took half an hour before all the skiers had been called back and a restart arranged.
Own snow factory
For the past eight years, Vasaloppet has had its own snow factory at Oxberg. At the beginning of each winter season they produce around 50,000 cubic metres of artificial snow, so that there is enough stock piled should there be a lack of snow come race time. But should there not be sufficient snow along the whole route then the extra snow still wouldn’t help. They have calculated that they would need nearly three times as much snow! Vasaloppet has been cancelled due to lack of snow on two occasions – in 1932 and 1990.

Many have done Vasaloppet 20 times. But only two have done Vasaloppet 20 times on tandem skis – Lasse Ruberg and Bjarne Emanuelsson from OK Landehof. The first time of course was for a bet! “Poor Bjarne who always stands behind and doesn’t see the track always comes last of us two. But in 2003 we tried to change places 100 metres before the finish, which unfortunately meant that the skis fell apart on the run in”, tells Lasse.
Just before participants reach the finish line in Mora they pass the Vasaloppet House. This is home to competitions organisers and clubs, a well-equipped shop and a modern exhibition in Vasaloppet museum. The museum has existed as long as the house - since 1994 - and was renovated just before the winter week in 2013. If you have not visited it (or visited it before it’s renovation ) then it really is worth a visit - in the small museum the race is depicted in a very entertaining way. 20 years in tandem skis
Vasaloppet Arranging Vasaloppet is close to impossible without the help thousands of volunteers who work to raise money for their clubs - and because it’s fun! We met one of the veterans, who began way back in the mid 1960’s.
Diligent volunteers “No, who is it?” Says the friendly receptionist in Vasaloppets museum, a little worried when I ask her if she has seen Karl-Erik Andersson yet. A short while later, a man in his 60s comes in, engaging in cheerful conversation with her. Sure, they know each other, but the man in question - Karl-Erik Andersson - is widely known by the nickname ‘Kea’ in Mora’s sporting circles. He has been in those circles a long time. IFK Mora Sports club has different sections, and it is the orienteering that Karl-Erik (which we shall call him) has been most interested with during the years. This doesn’t prevent the Vasaloppet organisation highlighting him as ‘one of our most active volunteers who has done the most over the years.’

“It’s the sports clubs that own Vasaloppet, and therefore we also have a responsibility to work as volunteers. For me there is no onerous responsibility in any way and I certainly wouldn’t want to miss out. It’s very sociable and I have met lots of lovely people over the years, he says, and takes a bite of his cake at the Zorn Museum’s café. The first task, he had at age 13, was when he was helping to sort thousands of backpacks and distribute them to
athletes when they reached the finish. “Another thing I did in the early days was sell the programme. Those programmes were an important part of the event for some time. I can still remember the fresh smell of ink on them when I collected the bundles to be sold.” Karl-Erik is now 64 years old, so it was in the middle of the 1960’s when he made his first voluntary effort for Vasaloppet. Since then he has worked actively with various associated events every year. “I’ve also competed myself - I have so far done 36 races over the years and on those occasions there has of course not been so much done during the actual race day. ...Or yes, in the beginning when I was younger and a bit quicker so I completed the race and then went away and helped somewhere.” He says that the day before our interview, he has been at a meeting with the Vasaloppet organisation. “They know that I am approaching 65, so they thought I would soon retire. Then they wanted to hire me to drive the snow grooming machine along the course, and it was very tempting. But I have no plans to retire. However, I take leave of absence in order to work with it if they want!” Those that have completed Vasaloppet 30 times are automatically included in the group Vasaloppet Veterans. Karl-Erik is of course one of them, and in addition help out even there. “I sit on the board - I’m by far the youngest there - and my responsibility is to take care of those who compete for the 50th or 60th time... Two years ago Bengt Eriksson was the first man to complete for 60 consecutive years. Impressive and incredibly good fun to be a part of!”

Culture Icelandic food festival At the Food and Fun festival the world’s most acclaimed chefs collaborate with Reykjavik’s finest restaurants. Each chef is assigned to one of the participating restaurants, where they prepare a special menu crafted from natural Icelandic ingredients and products. World renowned choreographer in town Verdi’s La Traviata Guideppe Verdi’s opera La Traviata, about the freedomseeking Violetta Valéry , is loved by people across the globe. La Traviata put mid-19th century society in the spotlight, with all it’s diseases and it’s problems, and dressed it up in music. This production of La Traviata is directed by Tatjana Gürbaca. She highlights, in particular, one of the opera’s central questions: to what extent are we free to determine what kind of life we lead? Playing at the Norwegian National Ballet from 22 January to 28 February.
Sasha Waltz is one of the world’s most innovative choreographers and her performances have had an impact far beyond the dance floor. Now she comes to Stockholm in a unique collaboration with the Royal Ballet. In Körper Sasha arranges the bodies of thirteen dancers in order to create a series of spectacular tableaux vivants. It all started as a hobby in a garage, in the village of Soo outside of Åre. Now, Torbjörn Lundström’s handmade knives are a success among the country’s cooking elite, with top chefs such as Niklas Ekstedt, Magnus Nilsson and Tommy Myllymäki on the list of satisfied customers. 26 BEST WAY 04.15
The knifemaker
“I’ve always been a bit of a handicraft nerd”, says Torbjörn Lundström, who self-taught, began making hunting knives for himself and his close friends almost 30 years ago. “I felt that I needed to develop so about seven years ago I started doing knives in more exclusive materials.You automatically become more accurate and the knives were really nice”, he says. Just over 18 months ago Torbjörn Lundström gave in to the nagging of his cooking friends and made his first chef’s knives in the small workshop in the garage of the family house, high up with views over Lake Åre.
The knives always arouse attention. “Anders Andersson, chef at Werséns here in the village is probably the one who has had his knife longest”, he says. “Anders Lundberg, who drove the legendary Åre bar - Marmite is also one of the first recipients. Rumours of the quality knives from Soo spread quickly from kitchen to kitchen and amongst the better-known customers are the Bocuse d’Or-finalist Tommy Myllymäki, Fotografiskas Paul Smith, Norwegian celebrity chef Sven Erik Renaa, Fävikens Magnus Nilsson and TV chef Niklas Ekstedt, who all have their roots in Åre.
“I have four knives, actually,” says Niklas Ekstedt. “They are fantastic and it’s fun to have something that is produced in my home town when I travel abroad to different events. The knives always arouse attention.” The blades are made of Swedish powder steel, which allows sharper edge angles than traditionally forged steel. Through a special process during its making, the steel gets it’s characteristic pattern. After hardening in a vacuum oven, the blades are then finished by cooking them in hydrochloric acid to further accentuate the pattern. The material of the handles is decayed birch picked in the forests around Åre and then vacuum treated with resin to increase durability. Knife sheaths are made of 90-year wood from the forests around Åre. The size of the knife determines it’s price. A knife of 20 cm will set you back 4,500 SEK, with the largest model of 25 cm costing 6,000 SEK. Delivery of chef’s knives - all of them numbered - total more than 80, and the orders are piling up.
“At the moment it’s about a three month waiting period,” says Torbjörn, who spends about 25 hours on each knife. He works on 10 to 12 knives at a time and hopes to make at least 100 knives a year. During the winter, Torbjörn works as a service technician at Åre Ski Sport which takes up most of his time. The summer is high season in his workshop when Torbjörn crafts chef knives full time. “I enjoy the division of work, but it can be lonely at times. Then I feel a bit like hermit in the mountains”, he says. But although the demand is great, he doesn’t want to increase the production rate and the only marketing he does is on Instagram. “It’s getting quicker and quicker to make the knives. The first one took a hell of a long time, but I have no plans to employ anyone. And each attempt made to buy out my business has been met with a firm no. It’s important to maintain exclusivity.”

Winter adventure Not in to skiing but still want to experience a real winter? Northern Sweden and Norway can offer everything from whale spotting and snowmobile safaris to dog sledding and the northern lights. We start in the Swedish mountains around Åre. There we find Camp Åre, which offers a variety of mountain experiences all year round. “During winter we run a lot of snowmobile safaris, which is a very popular activity. It is high up on the mountain and you get to enjoy an incredible winter wonderland with fantastic views”, says Fredrik Schill Gard at Camp Åre. Another popular activity is the zipline at Åre Zipline Park. The park consists of two different courses with a total of eight sections where you can whiz around up to a height of 60 metres, reaching speeds of up to 75 kilometres per hour. In Sälen, we find Fjälläventyr, a company running all kinds of activities, though snowmobiling and dog sledding are the most popular during the winter months. Try ice carting, a
sort of go-carting on ice, ice fishing or do some cooking up in the mountains. Furthermore they organise various competitions related to snow and winter, such as the little Vasaloppet, alpine ski races and biathlon. If you prefer things a little quieter, but still wish to experience nature during winter, there is winter horse riding. Fjällhästen, up in the Idre Mountains, and Ofelas in Kiruna, can offer peace and tranquility and a lot of snow either on horseback or pulled in a sleigh. There is everything from shorter rides of a few hours to a whole winter week on horseback. More adventure can be experienced in Arctic Lapland. Aurora Retreat, an eco-friendly tourist company, offers accommodation with both, close to nature overnight stays, or adventure camps with snowmobiles and skiing. In Norway, you can take part in everything from a whale watching and eagle spotting safari, to viewing the famous northern lights or exploring the mountains on snowshoes or a dog sled. Many of these activities are available along the northern coast of Norway, from Trondheim to Tromsø. Take a whale safari at Vesterålen and Senja or a trip by dogsled or snowmobile around Tromsø or view the famous northern lights in Lofoten. Those interested in arctic landscape predators, such as bears, wolves, wolverines and lynxs are recommended to visit the Polar Zoo in Narvik. Or why not visit Norway’s northernmost outposts, Spitsbergen and Svalbard. Here you can see the northern lights more often than on any other inhabited place thanks to its proximity to the North Pole.
