NEWS Hotel Plaza in Västerås becomes Best Western Plus The newly renovated Hotel Plaza in Swedish Västerås will be joining Best Western on 1 March 2017. The 25 floor hotel has 203 rooms, with the best location in central Västerås, adjacent to the Aros Congress Center and just three minutes walk from the main train station. The restaurant and lobby is a natural meeting and workplace for city residents.
Another Best Western hotel in Gothenburg Best Western Hotels & Resorts is strengthening its position in Gothenburg when the Novotel Göteborg becomes a Best Western hotel. It will join the group on 1 January 2017 and will change name to: Best Western Plus Hotel Waterfront Gothenburg. Sissel performing favourite songs from the last decade Sissel Kyrkjebø is one of Scandinavia’s greatest soprano singers of all time and this autumn she will be performing with her Songs of love concert all over Sweden. Sissel has been a Swedish favourite for many years and her previous shows have received excellent reviews. This time she will be accompanied by a team of very talented musicians who have worked with many of the best known artists in the world. Ennio Morricone celebrating 60 years of music
Bowie Tribute English tribute show Bowie Experience is a spectacular concert show with most of David Bowie’s many mega hits, which for several years has toured to sold-out venues around and outside of England. On the stage as David Bowie, the audience will experience the voice of look-a-like artist and multi-instrumentalist Laurence Knight. Along with musicians and a chorus of absolute world class, they perform the songs from one of the world’s biggest pop icons. It will be an unforgettable journey of sound, lighting and video through David Bowie’s years as an artist from Space Oddity to Let’s Dance. The iconic film composer Ennio Morricone will perform at Forum, Copenhagen on 2 December. The concert is part of his 60 years of music world tour - while it is also his debut on the Danish scene. With this new setup Ennio Morricone has performed at countless sold-out shows across Europe. Everywhere he has been welcomed by a
standing ovation from the audience and overwhelming reviews in the media. Ennio Morricone is behind some of the most acclaimed masterpieces from the world of film. Recently he has been honoured for his work on the Quentin Tarantino film The Hateful Eight, which also won an Oscar for Best Original Score.
Möller and Nûjen join forces After recent successes in theatres, concert halls and on Swedish Television with their respective performances Prime Minister Özz Nûjen and Bloody Pajas - the jokes you do not delete, two of the biggest names in Swedish comedy, Özz Nûjen and Måns Möller, join forces. In the show History of Sweden - the naked truth they take on the subject of Sweden’s history with typical unpredictability. Rivals and best friends Özz and Måns think very differently about a lot, but they also like each other very much too. Entertainment Joe Labero’s magical world He has amazed people all over the globe with his enchanting gift and now Joe Labero is finally back on Swedish soil - to celebrate 30 years as a magician with the show A Magic World. But also to turn upside down everything you thought was possible or impossible. For nothing is what it seems in this intimate and intrusive close-up show in which Labero takes you on a dizzying journey through his magical world, with no safety net. Playing 13 October to 27 November at Vasateatern, Stockholm.
Carola singing in Christmas After more than 30 years as an artist, Carola is close to being a musical institution in Sweden. With her legendary breakthrough at Eurovision in 1983 she etched herself firmly in Swedish consciousness and some of her biggest hits, ‘Främling’, ‘Mickey’ and ‘Fångad av en stormvind’ are a part of Swedish musical history. During the summer, she performed acclaimed concerts in Sweden and Finland, and was hailed as a summer host on radio station P1. Carola is back in the studio to record new music and heads out this winter on the new tour Drömmen om julen (Dream of Christmas). Selected dates: Oslo 19 November, Malmö 25 November, Helsingborg 26 November, Stockholm 1 December.

This autumn the legendary musical Singin’ in the rain will play at Folketeateret, Oslo, with Stian Blipp and Atle Pettersen in the male lead roles. It is certain to be one of the year’s most lavish and spectacular theatre experiences. The show is produced by Stage Evenings who have already had great

Döden – andra sidan e ni klara? (Death - other side are you ready?) is the final part of Anna Mannheimer and Peter Apelgren’s successful trilogy that began with ‘Poison’ in 2010, followed up with ‘Kids’ in 2013 and that has been seen by over 100,000 people. In Döden – andra sidan e ni klara? the popular pair deal with the topic of death in a warm and openhearted manner as they previously did with the subjects of marriage and parenthood. It is a show that amongst other things, raises the issue of what really happens when you die, what should be on the bucket list, how it actually looks up in heaven and when to do life’s last love bite. Stina Ekblad, Lena Endre and Ingela Olsson are set to perform in the play Presidentskorna (Presidents Shoes) as three maids from the bottom rung of society in a single long and winding conversation which dissects each others life, lie for lie. It is brutal, grotesque and humorous. The author is the Austrian playwright Werner Schwab, who died just 35 years old. From his breakthrough with President Shoes in 1990 to his death in 1994 he wrote fifteen plays at a furious pace and his short-lived career made a lasting impression in Germanlanguage drama. The performance is directed by Staffan Valdemar and will première on 22 October at Dramaten in Stockholm.

Legendary sculptor Thomas Schütte at Moderna Museet
Crafts in new guises
Thomas Schütte is one of the most acclaimed artists of his generation. He is best known for his sculptures, but his portfolio spans a wide variety of techniques, styles and formats and includes installations, models, drawings and watercolours. Transformations of scale are explored, figuration meets abstraction, with the intimate and personal interplay with the monumental and authoritarian. This autumn’s exhibition United Enemies, organised by Moderna Museet in Stockholm in close cooperation with the artist, is the first major museum presentation of his body of work in Sweden. Autumn exhibition Embodied in the National Museum of Design moves in the borderland between art and crafts and challenges the traditional view of what the arts are. Common to the twelve participating artists is the interest in the body and its’ physical form. The artists range from Annika Liljedahl, who was at art school in the 1960s to Ammy Olofsson who left in May and Maja Michaelsdotter Eriksson, who is currently studying a masters at HDK in Gothenburg. The Peace Prize exhibition: The Tunisian Method The Tunisian Method is an exhibition about the National Dialogue Quartet, winner of the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize. The National Dialogue Quartet consists of four organisations that jointly took on the role as a mediator when Tunisia was on the brink of civil war in 2013. The Tunisian Method provides insight into what happened in Tunisia after the Arabic spring risings, and the role of the National Dialogue Quartet in the work to get the country back on track. Shown until 27 November at Nobels Peace Center, Oslo.

The master: Anton Corbijn The exhibition 1-2-3-4 presents photography from a lost world , where creativity and intuition was God rather than mammon . An era where the musicians, and the photographer Anton Corbijn, took themselves and each other to constantly new levels of expressing true passion for their art. The exhibition is a tribute to Anton Corbijn's work in the music industry, a journey that started over 40 years ago. It presents a relationship between portrait photography and music in a passionately creative process that barely exist anymore. Showing at Fotografiska in Stockholm until 4 December.
Largest Monet exhibit ever shown in Northern Europe Ordrupgaard, the former private residence turned art gallery, will open it’s doors to Scandinavia’s largest Claude Monet exhibition this autumn. The Monet. Beyond impressionism exhibit is a unique chance to experience 50 of the famous artist’s paintings in one place. It will feature some of his most iconic pieces featuring
haystacks, cathedrals, water lilies and the artist’s garden in Giverny. A duplicate of the very same garden will be accessible at Ordrupgaard, where both children and adults can experience ‘The magic garden of Monet’. The train ride from Copenhagen central station is approx. 35 minutes. The exhibition is showing until 4 December.
The first time Merit Hemmingson played the Hammond organ was when Sweden’s TV was showing in black and white. Her way of blending Swedish folk music with pop and jazz was something completely new. Since then, this has been her hallmark - to combine the traditional with the latest in Swedish music. This autumn is the time for the next album release and on 28 October she meets musicians from the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in a concert at the Gothenburg Concert Hall.

“I have never really experienced this, as I painted long before I became a socalled celebrity. I got a great English paint box from my grandfather Stig when I was just five years old. But had it been the other way around I would certainly say that this was the case. I’m convinced that you cannot hide a mediocre creation or lack of talent by being a celebrity”, says Peter. “Being famous can be both an asset and a burden. Artistically it is often negative because of the snobbery within the art industry, but in terms of attention it might be helpful. But if you like me, are additionally noble, you’re probably doomed already from the beginning”, Caroline says with a laugh. Is there a big difference between performing on stage and creating in the artist’s studio? “Yeah I would rather compare it to writing songs. It is a constant struggle. I often find myself going around in circles in some kind of escapism, doing everything but create. It’s part of the process. Then suddenly, when I least expect it, the inspiration comes. And then it’s just keeping up with the flow”, explains Meja. “Absolutely, to stand before an audience and perform is a ‘contact sport’, while painting, in my case is a more contemplative employment. They are although closely related to me as they are both a way to portray. But the difference in the highs vary more within both disciplines than in the comparison”, Peter continues. “The feeling of having painted a really good picture is clearly comparable with having written a good song. Sometimes I sneak by the studio late at night to look at a newly made painting thinking: I did that! But I absolutely prefer to be on stage compared to walking around and smiling at a vernissage. It gives a completely different kick to perform on stage”, concludes Caroline.

ost celebrities, just like most people, seem to think of painting first when they think of art and, therefore, want to be painters themselves, painting their own masterpieces. Whether you see this as a blessing, curse, or sideshow farce, fame has become such a meta-subject and an American obsession, that just the act of someone famous making a painting, is enough to add secret layers to the artist’s image. The world is full of famous people who may be primarily known for one thing acting, writing, being an ex-president but who have also proven to be talented (or at the very least, dedicated) painters. While some have risen to the ‘serious’ artist category with critical acclaim and gallery exhibitions to match, others simply view painting as a hobby, a means of self-expression, a form of release. One of the more successful examples is actor Pierce Brosnan who credits Picasso, Matisse, and Kandinsky as his biggest inspirers. “I always wanted to be an artist, a painter,” Brosnan says on his website. “I started as a trainee artist in a small studio in South London.” An environmentalist and philanthropist, Brosnan donates the sales of his giclee prints to the Brosnan Trust to distribute to his chosen charities. But fame is usually no guarantee in winning the love of the art critics. Might it be a little more difficult to be taken as a serious artist if you are a celebrity? We phoned Swedish singers Meja and Caroline af Ugglas and comedian Peter Apelgren, also dedicated painters, to find out their view on this subject. “I’ve actually never thought in those directions about my art. I do what I do. Experimenting and letting the mind wander without any pre-judgements”, says Meja.

Art in Scandinavia The north is home to a number of facinating museums for art lovers. We showcase eleven which are well worth a visit when visiting Scandinavia.
Scandinavia – an art lovers paradise! Nivaagaard Nivaagaard’s art gallery was founded by landowner Johannes Hage, whose private collection was donated to the public as an independent institution in 1908. Johannes Hage’s interest in collecting art was a product of his upbringing in one of Copenhagen’s leading cultural environments. However, an equally important factor was his desire to restore Denmark’s reputation after its defeat in 1864 through the collection of the finest examples of European art. The museum is located in a large, romantic garden full of beautiful old trees and abundant rhododendrons. At the museum, you can experience art from the Italian and Northern European Renaissance, the Dutch Baroque and the Danish Golden Age. Bornholm Art Museum is situated about six kilometres north-west of Gudhjem in one of the most spectacular landscapes in Denmark. The museum’s floor space covering 4,000 m² is dispersed over three levels, following the natural slope of the terrain down to the rocky coast. In former times, people flocked to the area because of the supposed curative powers of the sacred spring (Helligdomskilden) found here. The spring now bubbles out of a fountain and flows through a gutter the entire length of the building, before being released into the Baltic Sea through a small wishing well. This makes the building itself, regarded as a nonpareil of Scandinavian architecture, an artistic experience in its own right with its bright, lovely rooms. The permanent collection comprises visual arts and craft art relating to Bornholm. The collection’s visual arts range chronologically from the early 19th century up to the present, and revolve around the painters of the ‘Bornholm School’, who worked on the island in the early 1900s. The museum’s works by the Bornholm School provide a rich account of modernism’s breakthrough in art.
Kalmar Konstmuseum Kalmar Konstmuseum is the regional museum for art in the county of Kalmar. The Museum exhibit’s international contemporary art, curates shows that mirror the regional art scene and display artworks from the collections of the Kalmar Art Association. The mission is to promote the understanding and enjoyment of visual art, and to stimulate and inspire own thoughts and reflections. Kalmar konstmuseum is situated within Stadsparken (the town park) and has a spectacular view over the castle bay and Kalmar Castle.The overall goal of the museum is to act as a meeting point for reflection, discussion and new insights, to act as a part in the public debate and remain a cultural power house in the south-east region of Sweden. Kalmar Museum of Art was opened to the public on 10 May 2008 and has been shortlisted for the Best New Cultural Building at the World Architectural Festival in Barcelona 2008 and the Mies van der Rohe Award 2009

Astrup Fearnley Museet Astrup Fearnley Museet is a private museum of contemporary art, and has since its opening in 1993 been one of the most important art institutions in Oslo. The museum moved to Tjuvholmen in 2012, beautifully located by the Oslo Fjord. The museum building is designed by the renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano. It is made up of three pavilions that reside under one distinctive glass roof, which is shaped like a sail. The building nods to its maritime surroundings in other ways as well: cable rigged steel columns mirror the masts of the sailboats in the harbour close by, while the building’s silver grey cladding bears witness to seaside weather exposure.The museum presents temporary exhibitions of international art, and houses the Astrup Fearnley Collection, one of Norway’s most important and most extensive private collections of contemporary art, with iconic works by artists such as Damien Hirst, Anselm Kiefer and Jeff Koons.
Gothenburg Museum of Art The Gothenburg Museum of Art has always been contemporary in the sense that the museum has primarily acquired the contemporary art of its time, in the past as well as now. The museum building was created for the 1923 International Exhibition in Gothenburg by architect Sigfrid Ericson, which celebrated the city’s 300th anniversary, and represents the monumental NeoClassical style in Nordic architecture. It is built of a yellow brick called “Gothenburg brick” because of the material’s frequent use in the city. The museum forms the imposing end of the main street of the city, Kungsportsavenyn, exhibiting the world’s foremost collection of Nordic paintings from around 1900. The collection also contains older and modern western art including works by famous international artists like Rembrandt, Picasso, van Gogh, Monét, Henry Moore and Louise Nevelson. On the top floor visitors find the Fürstenberg Gallery, originally a private collection which was later donated to the museum. The gallery is installed in a setting typical of its period, housing paintings by such Nordic artists as Edvard Munch, Ernst Josephson, Carl Larsson, P. S Krøyer and Anders Zorn. 03.16 BEST WAY 17

Louisiana The beautiful Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, is located 40 kilometres north of Copenhagen. It has gained a reputation as a museum in touch with the zeitgeist of the contemporary art world where you can experience international artists, concerts and lectures. When Louisiana opened its doors in 1958, the founder, Knud W. Jensen, intended for the museum to be a home for modern Danish art. But after only a few years he changed course, and instead of being a predominantly Danish collection, Louisiana became an international museum with many internationally renowned works. The comfortable, welcoming exhibition rooms, the spaciousness of the park, the opportunity to pamper yourself in the café and the shop, as well as the many concerts, lectures and debates that take place in the Concert Hall in the evening – all contribute to making Louisiana a cultural centre in the broadest sense. Every year, the Louisiana Museum shows six to eight major exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, including classical masters of modern art as well as new and upcoming international artists.
Waldemarsudde, originally the home of Prince Eugen (1865-1947), became state-owned after the Prince’s death in accordance with his will, and is now among the most-visited art museums in Sweden. The complex consists of a castle-like main building – the Mansion – finished in 1905 and designed by the Swedish architect Ferdinand Boberg, and a Gallery Building, added in 1913. Prince Eugen was one of his generation’s foremost landscape painters and many of his bestknown works, including Molnet (the Cloud) and Det gamla slottet (The Old Castle), are part of the collections at Waldemarsudde. Also an art collector, his collection of Swedish early 19th-century art is one of the foremost in the country. The estate is set in a beautiful parkland by the inlet to Stockholm harbour presenting the visitor with stunning views of the water. In the park are a number of sculptures by French and Swedish artists, such as Auguste Rodin, Antoine Bourdelle and Carl Milles.

Henie Onstad Art Center Henie Onstad Art Center is a museum of modern and contemporary art located at Høvikodden, 15 minutes west of Oslo. The museum was opened in 1968 and was made possible by generous donations from art collectors Sonja Henie and Niels Onstad. It hosts temporary exhibitions as well as the Henie Onstad collection, which includes works by Picasso, Matisse, Beuys, Christo and famous Norwegian artists such as Weidemann. From Cubism to Surrealism, the Henie Onstad Art Center provides an in-depth look at some of the great artists of the day. The thought-provoking pieces on display here are accompanied by plays, lectures and other events the museum offers on a regular basis. And don’t forget to head downstairs to check out the trophy room, boasting former figure skater Sonja Henie’s fantastic collection of medals and athletic achievements. 18 BEST WAY 03.16
The Hallwyl Museum Enter the home of Count and Countess Walther and Wilhelmina von Hallwyl. This palatial residence was built as a winter home for the immensely rich couple, completed in 1898. Wilhelmina always planned for the house to become a museum, and in 1920 they donated their Stockholm mansion together with its contents to the Swedish State. The terms of the bequest stipulate that the house must remain essentially unchanged. Wilhelmina’s vision became a reality in 1938 when the Hallwyl Museum was first opened to the public, eight years after her death. The house has been preserved exactly as it was left, and situated among the objects of art are personal peculiarities including a chunk of the Count’s beard and a slice of their wedding cake. The museum features preserved rooms from the late Victorian period in Sweden giving a glimpse into the lifestyles of the nobility in Stockholm at the time. Includes the Hallwyl Collection, which encompasses some 50,000 objects.

Sven-Harry’s Art Museum “What do you do with an art collection when it is complete? If you donate it to a museum it ends up in their basement. No, I want everyone to be able to enjoy my art the way I do.” - Sven-Harry Karlsson This was the thought behind the founding of the museum, which opened on 27 March, 2011. Sven-Harry’s Art Museum is a spectacular building with a gleaming brass facade, in the middle of Stockholm, by Vasaparken. The building designed by Gert Wingårdh and Anna Höglund, unites a variety of activities: in addition to the art gallery, it also houses a restaurant, apartments and commercial premises. It has a broad and varied spectrum of contemporary and classical art and endeavours constantly to expand the concept of art, with exhibitions, collaborations and discussions, in an active, living house and home. On the roof, the crowning glory, is a replica of Sven-Harry’s former home, the 18th century manor - Ekholmsnäs. It is surrounded by a terrace with sculptures and a fantastic view of Vasastan.

Wanås
Wanås is a place where art, nature, and history meet. The area consists of a castle, organic farm and café, art gallery, sculpture park, a museum shop and deli and is located in the Östra Göinge area of north eastern Skåne. Wanås Konst produces, presents, and communicates contemporary art to both the initiated and the novice. International contemporary art with a focus on site-specific installations have been shown here since 1987. Every year Nordic and international artists are invited to create art in the Park. Today the Park hosts over 50 permanent works and over 8,000 children participate in their art-based educational activities every year. This site-specific collection includes works by Dan Graham, Charlotte Gyllenhammar, Ann Hamilton, Per Kirkeby, Marianne Lindberg De Geer, Srinivasa Prasad,Yoko Ono and Robert Wilson. Wanås was initially focused on three-dimensional sculpture from the Nordic countries and the United States, but today the perspective has expanded to include both the world outside the West and the cousins of the visual arts: design, dance, architecture, text, and even science. 03.16 BEST WAY 19
Ribera Del Duero – Spain’s hottest wine district
Spanish wines have been the most popular in Sweden for many years. Velvety, ripe and oaky wines from Rioja have graced our dinner table for years. Overtaken by countries like South Africa and Italy, these wines were a little forgotten. Then a little over fifteen years ago, they created a new style of wine, increasing the concentration with smaller harvests giving the wines a more fruitdriven style where the oak character was less dominant. Today, Spanish wines are hotter than ever and my favourite area is the Ribera Del Duero. Text: Håkan Nilsson

We are in the middle of August, and I have come to Castile-Leon which is Spain’s largest region for quality wines. After the stunning 2001 vintage there have been many good years with the exception of 2002 and in 2013. Many winemakers have over the years pointed out to me that a wine is not made in the cellar, but out on the vineyards. It is warm and 35°c when I visit a number of plant locations along with Alejandro, a grape farmer. Out on vineyard the grapes are still small and green as peas, though one can glimpse some starting to turn blue. It has been a unexpectedly mild spring, and local opinion is that, it looks better compared with the same time last year – and 2015’s harvest was fantastic.
There is still much that can still go wrong, but if the stable weather continues then this year’s harvest will begin in early October. Alejandro sells their grapes to some of the most renowned wineries, and it is scamble between Aalto, Vega Sicilia, Pago de Carraovejas and the latest addition Éxzito as to who gets the grapes from the oldest vines that are almost 100 years old. Ribera del Duero is the largest winegrowing region of Castilla y León and follows the Duero Valley east of Valladolid for almost 100 km. In this part of Spain we find the country’s most famous wine Vega Sicilia. A terrific wine from vines that were sown in 1864 and up until just a few years ago, the wine had no competition as the country’s best wine. Although its status is huge, there has emerged a raft of bodegas where wine makers have been courted by financiers in order to start new projects. A local wine which is on all wine lovers lips is Pingus and the entire project has been a success story. It was Peter Sisseck, from Denmark, who was in charge at Hacienda Monasterio in 1995 who got the chance to buy in tempranillo grapes from extremely old vines. The wine was fermented and then put in 12 barrels that gave 3,600 bottles. Due to the amazing concentration Peter chose to replace the barrels after 6 months putting the
wine in new oak. When the world’s no.1 wine guru, Mr. Robert Parker from California, tested the wine, he gave it 99 out of 100 points. There was complete hysteria around the world and the price tag swelled to 95 euros a bottle. 2,000 of the bottles were loaded and sent across the Atlantic to the United States.
Unfortunately the ship crashed half way on its voyage and the boxes of Pingus wine disappeared in to the sea. With only 1,200 bottles left of the first vintage the price rose to an almost 850 euros a bottle, and since then, this price level has continued, making Pingus the most expensive wine in Spain. If your budget is a little lower then look out for the second wine, Flor de Pingus, which commands just a tenth of the price. One notable partnership was started in 1999 between, winemaker Mariano Garcia of Vega Sicilia and Javier Zaccagnini, where the flagship Aalto
PS has become one of the wine world’s most cult wines. Mariano ran out of this wine since he made an equally impressive wine at home on the Mauro estate. Spaniards have earlier spoilt wine lovers around the world by delivering old and mature wines to great prices. Today it would be impossible for a newly established winery to wait five years before getting their first euros. One has instead focused on the more concentrated wines with a fruit-driven style and noticeable tannic acid, which means that the consumer must nurture the wines in their own cellars and wait for the right time. This new international style has made many collectors aware of the quality of Spanish wines and they are still reasonable in price. On stage this autumn Acclaimed book takes to the stage Book series Min Kamp (My battle) became the decade’s major literary sensation on its release. Karl Ove Knausgård’s books are about his life, the world he grew up in, his family and friends, and of all the choices that made him who he was and what he is today. With his relentless desire to understand and to live a decent and true life, he wrote in an open and outspoken way in which we all could recognize ourselves. The captivating story is brought to the stage by Norwegian director Ole Anders Tandberg. The six novels and 3,622 pages have been squeezed in to two and a half hours of theatre. Min Kamp premièred at the Stockholm City Theatre last year and was critically acclaimed, later also appearing on Swedish television. Premiere at Oslo Nye Teater on 11 October.
N M U S AUT Magnus Uggla laid bare
Magnus Uggla monologue Hey! PopMusik, kickar å kläder, has been hailed by the critics. The autobiographical show written by Martin Luuk, mainly revolves around how his career started up with his album Om Bobo Viking but also delves in to other parts of his career and life until today. It tells of stories from his childhood, of how pop music invaded him, his dreams and the breakthrough years in the 70s interspersed with songs from the same period. “I wanted to see a more intimate Magnus, under the spotlight without the masks, without sunglasses. I wanted to hear him sing the old songs, scaled down. Magnus has given me all this”, says Luuk. The show is directed by Sunil Munshi and plays at Vasateatern in Stockholm from 1-17 December and Cirkus from 26 January to 27 February. 22 BEST WAY 03.16

When Christer Lindarw and Lasse Flinckman launched After Dark they changed the entertainment scene in Sweden with the ground-breaking scenes they contained in their shows. It is with excitement and great anticipation that the group are now ending their successful year with the show This is it. Playing 16 September to 17 December.
Legendary hippie musical playing the Gothenburg Opera Hair, the wild and headstrong rock musical, is back with its timeless message of love, despite the spectre of war and environmental disaster is both a rock concert and theatre. In Rikard Bergqvist’s Swedish version, we see young talent and street performers along with a rock band on stage. With Hair, he creates a strong live concert for the young at heart with the entire ensemble singing and dancing their way through more than fifty numbers with rap dialogue and exciting visual effects. The story follows the musical from 1967, but this is no nostalgia trip. Instead, we meet Claude, Berger, Sheila and the others in a shopping mall where they convey their dream of love with singing, music and dance. The message is as topical and relevant today as it was in the 60s. Plays until 28 March 2017 at the Gothenburg Opera.

Classic TV series on the stage
Macken - Roy’s and Roger’s Bilservice was shown on TV for the first time in autumn 1986. The series made the performers beloved and paved the way for a series of acclaimed films and performances. The last episode of the series was watched by 3.6 million viewers. The series has been re-run several times by SVT and has had over a million viewers each time. Gothenburg’s Lorensbergsteatern are celebrating 100 years by having Macken perform 100 performances. It also becomes a double celebration as Macken itself turns 30. This year's major Danish musical adventure A star cast, amazing dance numbers, a large orchestra and an abundance of costumes and decorations make for a fast and breathtaking show when Cole Porter’s classic musical comedy Anything Goes plays at Det Ny Teater in Copenhagen. Set in 1930 onboard an ocean liner, there are choir girls, sailors, a gangster disguised as a priest and many other eccentric passengers. But all is not what it seems to be. Etiquette is soon thrown overboard and suddenly anything goes in the cabins and on deck. New releases this autumn Shannara Chronicles - Season 1 Adventure/Action – DVD Thousands of years after the destruction of our civilization, the earth has been divided into what is called ‘The Four lands’, whose residents are a mix of races such as elves, dwarves, trolls and humans. In the centre stands the Shannara family, whose descendants are established from ancient sorcery. Terry Brook’s classic book series has become a technical and visually lavish dramatisation. The series is similar to the Tolkien films recorded on scenic New Zealand. Unfortunately, the actors’ performances and the dialogue are occasionally weak. No new ‘Game of Thrones’ but nonetheless good Sunday entertainment.
The fundamentals of caring Drama comedy – Netflix exclusive release Ben is a retired writer, who after a personal tragedy, starts a new job as a carer. After six weeks of training, he meets his first customer, Trevor, a foul-mouthed 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy. One is paralyzed emotionally, whilst the other physically and together they make a trip to all the places Trevor has become obsessed with whilst watching the local news. This is a little gem of a movie and much of the secret lies in the shimmering interplay between the protagonists Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts. In 2016 Viola Beach were on the way to something really big. Music critics had their eyes on the guys and their debut album was on the way. But the story took a tragic turn when their car crashed outside Södertälje, Sweden in February and the entire band perished. Now their debut album is finally released posthumously, and the loss of life feels even more tragic. This is in fact nothing less than a showcase of British pop art. Driven melodies with catchy guitar riffs at a fast pace. An album full of hope and youthful innocence. A pity that it is all we will ever hear. R.I.P.
Swedish Håkan Hellström releases his eighth studio album and this time he is more daring, trying new expressions. The sound is maximized with strings, guitars, synths and even a bagpipe. It sounds elaborate and pompous, but without, being too polished. Occasionally a bit tough, it is actually the quieter songs that are the weakest. This a stable and surprisingly experimental album from Sweden’s king of pop. One is impressed that he has again found a way to move forward musically, without sacrificing the things that makes him so unique.
Believe it or not, but Britney Spears is 35 years old, and it is now that colleagues like Madonna did their ‘mature and difficult’ album. But instead, Britney does the opposite, picking out some of the hottest songwriters and producers to deliver 12 feel good tracks full of catchy hooks and bubblegum pop. The last ten years have found her disoriented moving between genres, but this feels like Britney has finally found home. She seems at her best when on the verge of being frivolous and vulgar, but always with a smattering of irony behind. A strong comeback!

Amanda Palmer is known as a musician and performance artist, but clearly has the gift of writing. A well written and entertaining book, which sometimes borders on being a bit egocentric and narcissistic. Since its inception in January 2015 there are some 30 hotels around the world in the BW Premier Collection, and a surprisingly high number of them can be found in Scandinavia. The architecture, partly from the 1600s and partly, from mid-1800 onwards, offers many exciting opportunities for unique accommodation where all the rooms are individually decorated. Karin and Kjell wanted a homely atmosphere so they completely renovated the hotel using inspiration from their many travels. In addition, they wanted the public areas to be a lively meeting place for those who appreciate interior design, architecture and good food and drink in a relaxed and intimate environment. Quite simply, a hotel they themselves would like to stay in. During the two years since they took over, they have also worked hard to change the hotel’s image, lifting it to the position they consider it should have. Cultural increase in London Autumn sees many new options for London visitors to coincide with some of the largest expansions of major cultural venues in the city in decades. Amongst other things, the Tate Modern has grown in size, including a roof terrace with views over London. The Design Museum also re-opens on 24 November in new premises in Kensington with three times as much space. Among new exhibits are Picasso’s Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery, Rotjko, Pollock and De Kooning at the Royal Academy, Carvagio at the National Gallery, as well as new dance and theatre shows such as School of Rock, Dreamgirls, The Emperor, Ragtime and Pride and Prejudice. Most popular is Spain, with destinations such as Mallorca and Malaga which have increased in popularity, along with eternal favourite the Canary Islands which is partly due to that Turkey is in less demand. Among city breaks it is London which increased the most, in the wake of Brexit and fall in the value of the pound. Other popular destinations are Crete, Rhodes and Cyprus, along with cities such as Miami, Bangkok, Barcelona, Lisbon and Alicante.

The airports in the three capitals, Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen, are expanding in both surface area and number of passengers. At Arlanda there will be an extra 100,000m2 of hangars for the largest aircraft and a rebuilt transfer and security gate at Terminal 5. The projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2017. In Oslo, Gardermoen, has a new domestic hall which opened on 1 September as part of a revamp to the airport, which includes a new duty free shop. And Kastrup in Copenhagen looks like recording another record year, which can partly be attributed to the extra 40 international routes which were launched last year.
World’s largest indoor theme park and new opera open in Dubai On 31 August the world’s largest indoor theme park, IMG Worlds of Adventure, opened it’s doors in Dubai. The area is the first global theme park that unites Marvel and Cartoon Network, the Lost Valley Dinosaur Adventure park and IMG Boulevard. Experience roller coasters and other cool attractions, 28 restaurants and 25 shops. For a completely different experience, you can visit the newly built opera which opens in September, with its 60,000m2 accommodating 1,900 guests.
