La Luz de mi Vida
My uncle Arturo met his wife, Josefina, in 1984 at a bar in Madrid called “El Grillo Loco”. Initially, he was attracted to Josefina’s friend, who wasn’t interested in him. They started hanging out as friends, and he ended up falling devoutly for Josefina’s charismatic personality. They dated for almost a decade until they decided to secretly marry in Las Vegas.
Both of them worked in Arturo’s furniture store and workshop until the business went under due to the economic crisis of 2008. They never had kids, and instead, they decided to pursue their dream of traveling the world.
After nearly 40 years of marriage, Josefina suddenly passed away. A couple of months after her death, Arturo was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He is currently receiving treatment and grieving the loss of “the light of his life”.
With this project, I want to pay homage to their life together in how her memory lives on through him. I want to commemorate her by showing the objects that help her presence remain in their house and how he’s living now that she’s gon e. I want to tell a story about love and loss.
Carlota Sánchez Mc Sweeney is a Guatemalan photographer based in Paris. She moved to Spain in 2021 to study Literature, then later moved to Paris to follow her passion for photography. Throughout 2022 to 2024
Carlota studied photojournalism at the Spéos Photography school where she specialized in Documentary and Photo reportage.
Due to her sensitivity to human emotions, her curiosity for the world, as well as her love for nature and everything colorful, her work focuses in creative documentaries, landscape photography and street photography.
