Mind Matters; Through a family lens

Dana NammariIt’s a peculiar thing when marrying into a family, once an outsider but now with a seat at the table - albeit a more observatory one; witnessing the most intimate moments but somewhat removed from the scene. It is through this lens that this series is taken, aiming to uncover some of the complexities of a family- my in-laws- whose youngest member, Karam, was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder at the age of 17. It takes place predominantly within the confines of our Parisian apartment, where Karam and his mother are staying for the duration of their visit.
Schizoaffective disorder is a combination of bipolar and schizophrenia; characterised by the mood disorder symptoms exhibited in the former, typically mania and depression; and psychosis traits of the latter, such as paranoia and unusual behaviour.
The nature of this mental condition is taxing, on Karam and the family members involved. This photographic series, aims to shed light on his condition through the portrayal of his interactions with other family members and the constant push and pull in cohabiting with mental illness. Ultimately it is also cyclical in nature, issues temporarily addressed, resurface shortly with no real resolve.
