A Fishermen`s Tale Jasmine Aboud 32W Photo Journalism / Speos 23-24

This project is an exploration into the lives of Icelandic trawler fishermen over the course of a week aboard their ship in Hafnarfjorour.

I wanted to immerse myself into their unique and challenging lifestyle to understand and gain some perspective and insight into what lead them into this life.

These fishermen work 8 hours at a time with only one break, then alternate with the second crew like this for a month, sometimes two months, at a time. Through gigantic Atlantic swells, snow, rain, wind and sometimes brief sunshine these men persevere through both these physical elements and mental challenges everyday to earn a living.

At the end of my time with them so far I have grown to understand their unique life of choice and will always look back on this journey with gratitude with the openness that they welcomed me into their world with.
