Blurry Stories An insight into blindness
“Blurry Stories” focuses on giving a visual insight into the different realities of blindness, attempting to capture and represent how blind people, whether born blind or with sight loss, visually recreate their surroundings in their mind. This process portrays a deeper view into their world which is also my world since I was born with Stargardt disease, a degeneration in the retina that causes my sight to get blurred over time. Therefore this project has also been an intimate exploration of myself and my relationship to photography.
Salvatore. Became blind after 10 days of being born due to the hospital’s mistake.
Odile. Became blind when she was 23 due to a rare retina disease.
Vincenzo. Replacement of an absent natural eye due to a childhood physical trauma.
Paolo Colorismo. A boarding school for blind kids and teenagers in Naples, Italy.
How do you see?
Stella and Chiara. Both became blind as kids from retinitis pigmentaire.
Naziha. Became blind when she was 30 due to a rare retina genetic disorder.
I grew up between Brazil and Italy and had a great childhood that expanded my horizons and curiosity in cultures around the world. As a kid, I was diagnosed with Stargardt disease, a macular degeneration in the Retina that causes my sight to be blurred. As I took my first camera in hand there was a new way of sensing the world. Now I could see better. My goal today is to use photography as a channel for storytelling. I am currently enrolled in a 1 year creative documentary program in Paris with Magnum Agency and SpĂŠos Photographic Institute working on personal projects close to my heart.
