General Bikram Singh was commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment in 1972. He is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, the Higher Command Course at Mhow and the US Army War College, Pennsylvania. During his 38 years of eventful military career and active service, he has held a number of important command and staff appointments. He has commanded an Infantry Battalion in the Northeast and on the line of control in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), a Rashtriya Rifles Sector in South Kashmir, and an Infantry Division again on the line of control in J&K. He was the Corps Commander of prestigious Srinagar Corps. He

Admiral Rabinder Kumar Dhowan took over as the 22nd Chief of the Naval Staff on April 17, 2014. He is the 20th Indian to take command of the Indian Navy. Admiral R.K. Dhowan is a navigation and direction specialist. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. In his long and distinguished service spanning over 39 years, he has served in a variety of Command, Staff and Instructional appointments. His Sea Commands include guided missile corvette INS Khukri, Kashin class guided missile destroyer INS Ranjit and indigenous guided missile destroyer INS Delhi. He is a graduate of Naval War College, Rhode Island, USA. He was the Naval Adviser
at the High Commission of India, London. His important staff appointments at Naval Headquarters include, Deputy Director, Naval Operations, Joint Director, Naval Plans and Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans). He has commanded the Eastern Fleet, one of the operational fleets of the Indian Navy. He has also served as the Senior Instructor at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. His other important appointments include, Chief Staff Officer (Operations), Headquarters Western Naval Command, Chief of Staff at Headquarters Eastern Naval Command the Commandant National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and the Vice Chief of Naval Staff. He is recipient of PVSM, AVSM, YSM and ADC.
Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha Chief of the Air Staff
Air Marshal Arup Raha graduated in 1973 from the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, with the President’s Gold Medal. He was commissioned in the Flying Branch in December 1974 and has to his credit nearly 3,400 hours of flying experience mainly on fighter aircraft. The Air Marshal is an experienced qualified flying instructor holding ‘A2’ instructional category. He is also an alumnus of Defence Services Staff College and the National Defence College. He has served as a Directing Staff at Flying Instructors School, Tambaram, as well as at the Tactics and Combat Development Establishment of the IAF. He

was deputed as the Military and Air Attaché in the Indian Embassy in Kiev, Ukraine, from 1999 to 2001. He has held several operational assignments including Command of a MiG-29 squadron and two important airbases in the Western Sector. He has also served as the Deputy Commandant of Air Force Academy, Senior Air Staff Officer at Western Air Command, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Air Command and Vice Chief of Air Staff before taking over as the Chief of the Air Staff on January 1, 2014. He is recipient of PVSM, AVSM and VM.

overview of the economy Kazakhstan, geographically the largest of the former Soviet republics, excluding Russia, possesses enormous fossil fuel reserves and plentiful supplies of other minerals and metals, such as uranium, copper and zinc. It also has a large agricultural sector featuring livestock and grain. In 2002 Kazakhstan became the first country in the former Soviet Union to receive an investment-grade credit

rating. Extractive industries have been and will continue to be the engine of Kazakhstan’s growth, although the country is aggressively pursuing diversification strategies. Landlocked, with restricted access to the high seas, Kazakhstan relies on its neighbours to export its products, especially oil and grain. Although its Caspian Sea ports, pipelines, and rail lines carrying oil have been upgraded, civil aviation and roadways continue to need attention. Telecoms are improving, but require considerable investment, as does the information technology base. Supply and distribution of electricity can be erratic because of regional dependencies, but the country is moving forward with plans to improve reliability of electricity and gas supply to its population. At the end of 2007, global financial markets froze up and the loss of capital inflows to Kazakhstani banks caused a credit crunch. The subsequent and sharp fall of oil and commodity prices in 2008 aggravated the economic situation, and Kazakhstan plunged into recession. While the global financial crisis took a significant toll on Kazakhstan’s economy, it has rebounded well, helped by prudent government measures. Rising commodity prices have helped the recovery. Despite solid macroeconomic indicators, the government realises that its economy suffers from an overreliance on oil and extractive industries, the so-called “Dutch disease.” In response, Kazakhstan has embarked on an ambitious diversification programme, aimed at developing targeted sectors like transport, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, petrochemicals and food processing. In 2010 Kazakhstan joined the Belarus-Kazakhstan-Russia Customs Union in an effort to boost foreign investment and improve trade relationships.

Kazakhstan faces no significant external threats. Unique in the post-Soviet Central Asian region for its significant and sustained economic growth which has translated into consistent standard of living increases for the population, Kazakhstan has also had a measured foreign policy since independence. Although Russia and China, its two economically and militarily sizeable neighbours, are perceived as threatening by some Kazakhs, it is not in a military sense. Rather, Kazakhs worry about Russian and Chinese investors exerting influence as a result of economic power, and they express concern about political bullying. They have managed these problems predominantly by maintaining good relations with these countries, as well as building ties with the United States. Kazakhstan has sought not so much to balance any one partner against others as it has to ensure that a network of good relationships prevents conflict. In its own region, Kazakhstan has aspired to Central Asian leadership with variable success. Kazakhstan is a strategic fulcrum in the vast Central AsianCaspian Basin zone, a region rich in energy resources and a potential gateway for commerce and communications between Europe and Asia. It is also an area that faces a vast number of security challenges. Ensuring a stable and secure Central Asia is important for the world and for Kazakhstan which has a vital stake in the security of this region.

Impact Feature Very early in the 1990s, SP’s Military Yearbook introduced the exciting concept of editorial support to its valued advertisers. This concept was quickly picked up by many global leaders in publishing in the subsequent years.
