Getting the most from Spice - top tips ● Check the web site regularly, we update on a daily basis, make sure you don’t miss that “must do event” ● Booking early means you won’t be disappointed by an event selling out (most do come around again). ● Use any credit vouchers you received when you first joined, as these will expire after 3 months. ● Try something different, you never know you may surprise yourself and love it! ● Use the transport share list if you find it difficult to get to an event, most Spice members are more than happy for a bit of company on a long trip. ● Go on the wait list, we do get members cancelling bookings and we can often arrange for extra slots.

Our regular Club/Preview nights are a great way for members to catch up with each other and socialise over a drink in relaxed surroundings, if you have never been why not drop by. They are also a way for prospective members to come along, meet a few existing members and find out more about Spice & maybe join on the night. A Spice coordinator will be there to welcome you & make some introductions and also give a short talk about how Spice works, it’s all very relaxed and friendly. These nights are always popular and its well worth dropping in. There is no need to book and there is no charge, you only pay for your own drinks on the night, bring a friend if you like.

and make the most of your Spice membership!

Diannne’s wee bit Hello everyone! Welcome to the spring edition of the Bristol & Cardiff newsletter and an especially big welcome to Spice if you have recently joined. January & February are always a very busy time in the Spice office with new members joining, it’s great to have you with us, take a look at our fabulous events in our newsletter and just dive-in! We have had an excellent response from Spice members to our survey, so a big thanks to everyone who took part, Dave Smith at Spice UK is right now writing out the cheque to Comic Relief. Now that we are getting some spring sunshine hopefully we can tempt you out for some brilliant outdoor events. Coming up we have a number of beautiful spring walks planned in the cotswolds, Chepstow, Dinas Powys (near Cardiff), Tortworth, Tintern Abbey & Portsbury. We are also off to Cosmerston lakes country park which includes a visit to the nearby medieval village. In May our fun in a Tutu’ charity walk will help raise money for Macmillan cancer care. For our Spice adrenalin junkies we have a rib ride in Cardiff bay, Hovercraft racing, white water kayaks at Symonds Yat and a number of aeronautical adventures (paragliding, a tandem skydive, and a helicopter lesson to name a few) . Our fire eating & breathing is a Spice classic guaranteed to give you a massive buzz! Spice weekends are always a brilliant way to get to know other Spice members and make new friends. Our Pembrokeshire (Bluestone) weekend is back due to huge demand and this will be our 5 visit. At the end of May I am hosting our Norfolk, Burnham Deepdale bank holiday weekend, if you have never visited this picturesque part of the country it is well worth the journey. As usual Walkwise have a huge programme of walking weekends all over the UK including North Devon, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Kent, Sussex, the Pembroke coast, The lake district and lot of others. Usually there is a choice of easy and more demanding walks to suit you.

If you enjoy the water why not try one of our sailing on the solent weekends or a one day taster and get to know the ropes! For those prepared to travel further how about weekend sailing in sunny Malta! In June we are heading up to Nottingham for our annual Center Parcs weekend, for those who have never been, these events are legendary, 2 big parties, masses of things to do and the chance to make new friends with members from other Spice groups. This years theme is School sports day, sounds like a lot of fun, with no doubt a bit of friendly rivalry between the Spice groups. July will see our national dragon boat race, another Spice classic event and guaranteed lots of rivalry this time! We do of course have lots of local events in Bristol, Cardiff, Bath, Cheltenham & Gloucester, take a look at the newsletter back cover, but don’t forget to check out the web site as we update this on a daily basis. You can use the categories option in the event’s pages to search for events near to you. Have a great time on whatever events you choose to book and remember to send feedback via the web site. If you have any great photo’s of Spice members send these in as well, you never know you may be on the next front cover!

Dianne. P.S. Here at Spice we are always looking at ways of helping the environment. If you would rather not receive our newsletter please email us, you will of course still be able to view our web site and view an on-line version of the newsletter at Issuu.

After our walk we’ll meet back at The Green House to see how everyone’s done and give a prize to the winning team..

This beautiful house had a remarkable transformation late last year in the landmark BBC TV series “The Manor Reborn”. The series followed a lively team of historians, designers and volunteers as they refurbished the 500 year old Manor which had previously been in a state of neglect and disrepair. The finished rooms evoke the personalities of the families that lived there and the atmosphere of the eras in which they lived. You simply must see the hand-painted Chinese wallpaper. Furniture and objects have been recreated or restored by modern craftsmen – with the added challenge of having to be able to withstand the rigours of life as a National Trust house open to the public. Along with the house, a redundant kitchen garden has been transformed into a working Victorian kitchen garden. We’ll begin with a delicious Sunday roast at the famous thatched Red Lion pub in Avebury village centre before making our way to the Manor for our group visit.

Saturday 20th April 11 May & 3 Aug 2013 A344 Road, Amesbury, Wiltshire (SP4 7DE) Stonehenge Car Park - Spice Sign 6pm to 7:30pm £32 Member, £35 Gues Includes: Spice exclusive tour to the Inner Circle at Stonehenge. This is a very special event and the slots are limited, we have had to book many months in advance to secure this date so book early!

The great and ancient stone circle of Stonehenge is one of the wonders of the world. The last in a sequence of such monuments erected between circa 3000BC and 1600BC, each monument was a circular structure, aligned with the rising of the sun at the midsummer solstice. The true meaning of this ancient, awe-inspiring creation has been lost in the mists of time. Was Stonehenge a temple for sun worship, a healing centre, a burial site or perhaps a huge calendar? How did our ancestors manage to carry the mighty stones from so far away and then, using only the most primitive of tools, build this amazing structure? Surrounded by mystery, Stonehenge never fails to impress. This evening we have a Spice exclusive visit where we enjoy special access to Stonehenge, after the site has closed, with the opportunity to enter the inner circle (usually not accessible during public visiting hours) and see the stones up close. Our guide, Dr Terence Meaden, is a retired professor with graduate and postgraduate degrees in physics and in archaeology from Oxford University. Terence’s discoveries have been published in a number of books and were the subject of a major hour-long documentary made for Channel 4 and Discovery Channel in 1998. With his specialist knowledge we can be sure of a memorable evening. Weather permitting we should also be able to witness a spectacular sunset from inside the stone circle. Please note: Access to the inner circle is subject to certain conditions and English Heritage reserves the right to cancel this event at very short notice. If the event is cancelled we would offer you an alternative date.

En route you also get to sail close to the majestic St Alban’s Head and see Portland Bill. Weymouth is a traditional harbour and is a favourite amongst sailors for its ready access to many pubs and restaurants. Lunchtime meals are taken underway and are normally of the type that can be eaten al fresco. Throughout the sailing day snacks and biscuits are made available. Hot and cold drinks are provided as suits the conditions. We are able to cater for special diets. On Sunday we return to Poole. If time and conditions suit, we may anchor for lunch in Studland Bay, a beautiful anchorage a few miles south of Poole Harbour. We arrive back at Poole town quay at approximately 4.30pm.

Take a look down at the dockside where the cargo, cases and crates are waiting to be loaded. The SS Great Britain, the world’s first great ocean liner is about to depart. And you are aboard! Below decks you can peep inside the luxury cabins of First Class passengers. Eavesdrop on a conversation, dodge the harassed cook in his cramped galley, and marvel at the massive turning engine. You will discover the story of her rescue from the bottom of the South Atlantic and her final triumphant return to Bristol. Fire Eating + Breathing Workshop Date: Saturday 18th May 2013 Place: 138 Chertsey Rd, Twickenham (TW1 1EW) All Hallows Parish Church Hall at 11am to 4pm Cost: £49 Member, £55 Guest Fire Eating & Breathing: This has got to be one of the Spice Classic Events. Go on, It Must Be On Your List of "Got to do's". If you are not sure about doing it then ask around and find out what a great day it is! Over 2000 Spice members have faced the challenge and swallowed fire - and the feedback forms tell us it's crazy - thrilling - adrenaline pumping and more - fire eating is one of our Classic Events that sets Spice and its members far above the mundane and gives you the chance to leave mediocrity behind and become extra-ordinary. Bob the Fire Eater pioneered this classic event for Spice and taught a whole generation the joys of eating and breathing fire over a period spanning around 25 years of Spice history. Sadly Bob died in 2012 but his legacy remains in the happy faces of those members who have conquered this unique and dramatic skill. In memory of Bob we have created a new Fire Eating workshop with Blair, a performer who we believe to be the only remaining person teaching the same techniques as Bob. The morning session comprises a thorough programme of games and exercises done as a group, designed to boost confidence and team spirit, and to prepare members for the challenge of safely learning this dangerous and esoteric skill. Its lots of fun but never the less taken seriously as danger is ever present, so no messing about on this one. The day culminates in the incredible sight of all the team swallowing firebrands and for the grand finale - a team photo of everyone flame throwing! Are we mad - not when you know how!

Some of you may have met him at our Polo days, and may also know that he is an up coming actor with numerous TV, Film and Theatre appearances. For obvious safety reasons, we will not be allowed to actually hit each other with our jousts as death often results from that – and such bravery is not deemed culturally appropriate to the modern age! However, they use a quitaine (or dummy) to take the impact. On arrival you will be given a safety briefing and then your riding will be assessed. You will learn basic jousting skills such as hitting the quintaine and learn basic sword and staff fighting. Being a knight also involves being dressed in medieval costume. Traditionally jousting was only permitted for men to partake in, but fear not we take lady knights too!! So come and throw down the gauntlet and challenge the men!

Fri 24th May 2013 - Mon 27th May 2013 Haslar Marina, Gosport (PO12 1NU) Arrive for 8.00p.m. on Friday £318 Member Cabin Share, £338 Guest Cabin Share (Deposit £65) Includes cabin share on board accommodation, diesel, wet weather gear, life harnesses, breakfasts, lunches, snacks and teas/coffees. Extras: share of mooring fees and evening meals taken ashore. This is a good time of year to cross the Channel because the weather is often good and we have the advantage of long hours of daylight. Sailing across the Channel and making a ‘foreign’ landfall is a special and memorable experience. Starting early in the morning enables us to maximise our time the ‘other’ side and gives you the opportunity to experience lighthouses falling away astern, identify ships by their lights, watch the dawn sky gradually approaching from the east and that first magical glimpse of the sun rising over the horizon. The crossing normally takes between 12 and 15 hours. Once safely in harbour, you enjoy your first evening meal ashore with a real sense of achievement. Weather permitting we normally visit two harbours and enjoy an afternoon’s walk on one of the islands before returning to the Solent with a couple of hundred sea miles under the keel .

Or we could head to Savernake Forest near Marlborough for a different walk which would give a different perspective from the previous days walk. We stay at a prestigious spa hotel with great Leisure Facilities, plenty of free parking and have a great package – Dinner, Bed & Breakfast both nights with a packed lunch on the Saturday. The social après walking: Friday night - the plan is to have the pub games set up - not particularly structured as people will arrive at different times. This will get us all socialising as we meet our fellow Spicers. Dinner is included with the package. Saturday night - we will have a three course meal at the hotel followed by a Quiz. Sunday – After the walking we will have the option of a Sunday Lunch or a Cream Tea before heading home.

Overnight Forest Experience Date: Sat 6th Jul 2013 - Sun 7th Jul 2013 Place: Symonds Yat, Forest of Dean (GL16 7NN) at 8.00pm Cost: £49 Member, £52 Guest Anyone with a sense of adventure will love this brilliant multi activity hike after dark. Let’s hope it’s one of those eerie moonlit nights when the deer are out in force and stars that you can reach out and touch - but whatever happens you can be sure it’ll be one of those Spice experiences which you’ll remember for a long time. After meeting Den from outdoor specialists Forest Adventure, we start with a bracing hike, which includes some navigation tuition. Paths may be discarded as we bash through bush intent on a compass bearing despite any obstacles - so we can play at being Special Forces on manoeuvres in the jungle with a little imagination! If our compass work serves us, we should find a cave system at around 1.00am. Life inside is a little more 'normal' as darkness is permanent in these fascinating places, and we will light a fire inside to lift the spirits. Bear in mind that the temperature is constant underground all year round, and this works to your advantage at this time of year. As we'll be a little tired by now, we'll sleep till dawn in the peace of the cave system. Refreshed and invigorated, we'll plan our final route back. A café breakfast (not included) will be a priority stop for 'refuelling' on our journey home. We need to be prepared for all weathers, so good waterproofs and walking boots are essential. A good sleeping bag and mat in your rucksack are also essential for your subterranean snooze. This is wonderful Spice adventure with a maximum 10 to 1 instructor ratio, to ensure your safety on an amazing night out!

You may even be a Day Skipper already and want to refresh your skills before chartering a boat as skipper. In each case, we want you to have fun. Achieving the practical Day Skipper qualification involves learning to skipper a short passage, with the instructor on hand to give advice and encouragement and ensure your safety. This includes knowing how to manage the yacht, the engine, the victualling, planning the routes and navigating, anchoring, coming alongside; indeed everything that you will need to do when in charge of a yacht in the day time. You will also get experience of night sailing. You will need to have had some prior experience before doing the Day Skipper practical and complete the separate shore-based theory in order to get full certification. Achieving the RYA Competent Crew certification means that you will be able to helm, tie those important knots, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day-to-day duties on board. “No Spicer should miss a Dragon Boat Day. It really sums up what Spice is all about – fun, friendship, excitement & the chance to try an activity that anyone can enjoy!” MEMBER QUOTE These are great days out - Enter the Dragon! Up to twenty people sitting side by side in a forty foot long boat, with a carved dragon's head and tail attached. A drummer in the prow beating time, a steerer in the stern keeping the boat on course with a giant paddle, the crew, ten each side speeding the boat down the river to the finish line! The atmosphere is brilliant, which is why this is one of the essential events in the Spice calendar! This is The Big One! A huge national Spice event organised for Spice by a great group of specialists. As it’s the Official Spice UK National Finals, all groups will be sending a team to compete. We have our own trophies and medals to go for, and the races will be run on a timed basis over the day. Don't worry if you've never been in a Dragon Boat before, we'll have plenty of time to practice before the racing begins in earnest (and as this is Spice, it’s all just for fun anyway!). For colour, spectacle and excitement Dragon Boat Racing has it all and is also rapidly becoming the mass participation sport on water. If you want to know what a great day out this is ask any of the members who've attended previous events. Dragon Boat Racing caters for all ages, male and female, in one crew and requires no experience. It's great fun and totally unlike any other kind of canoeing with team work being the key, not strength. Get the start right and you can feel the boat lift out of the water and start to plane to give you a fast racing start, it's amazing how fast a 22 person canoe can travel! Each boat is provided with an expert helmsman to keep you on the right track, and with the help of your drummer beating out the time of the strokes you are sure to get the rhythm right...well that's the theory anyway! The venue for this year’s events is the river Avon at Pershore, on the northern edge of the Cotswolds. This is a beautiful setting in one of Englands' most picturesque areas so you may want to make a weekend of it. Changing facilities are available and there will also be food for sale during the day. Parking is available on site and a transport list with directions will be sent out to all those who book. No experience is necessary to participate but you must be able to swim at least 50 metres in light clothing.
