Our Retreats are set in some of Australia’s most picturesque locations. With five stunning destinations in south-east Queensland, three in the Hunter Valley, one in the Blue Mountains, and one in the Sydney CBD, each Spicers Retreat offers an exclusive, private and unique escape from the world.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

There is no ‘cookie-cutter’ style, no rigid rules that every Retreat looks the same. Instead, we embrace individuality so each Retreat is as unique as the brand itself.

The natural setting in which they are located is as important to our philosophy as the Retreat itself. The positive effect of being in these natural environments is elemental to Spicers. We are fortunate to call Australia home - a land of wild beauty and stunning flora and fauna - and sharing the experience of this land with our guests is both our privilege and our passion.

JUDE TURNER SPICERS FOUNDER

Growing up in Warwick, Jude Turner has deep roots in the bush. When the opportunity arose to purchase land for a weekend farmhouse, Jude and her husband ‘Skroo’ acquired the land now known as Spicers Peak Station.

With the busyness of life continuing unabated, an idea began to formulate - a collection of unique destinations showcasing amazing Australian locations without sacrificing good food and wine, and the relaxed luxury and service found in great hotels around the world.

Jude’s passion for sharing the natural environment remains as strong as ever, with a focus on preserving it for generations to come - particularly her two grown children and three grandchildren.

The Spicers Retreats collection grew out of the idea that small hotels should feel like a home, but guests should still enjoy a level of service they would expect from the finest establishments.

SUSTAINABILITY

The Spicers Sustainability Minimum Standards have been formed in alignment with the relevant UN Sustainable Development Goals, with measurable and achievable targets specific to each Retreat. Our commitment to the land means we invest heavily in responsible farming techniques, sourcing ethically and sustainably grown ingredients for our restaurants, and in products and processes that help us reduce, reuse and recycle.

We also partner with suppliers and organisations who share our commitment to sustainability, constantly working to minimise our impact on the environments we are so privileged to enjoy.

Each Retreat regularly reviews performance to track improvements and identify new opportunities to grow our impact year on year, working towards our goals of removing all single use plastics from our sites and sending zero waste to landfill by 2025 and producing zero net emissions from energy by 2030. We’re also working towards reducing our water use by 25% by 2025.

CONSERVATION

In addition to sustainability as a guiding operational philosophy, conservation plays a significant part in the management of the land and natural resources where our Retreats are located.

The Turners’ land holdings include two designated nature refuges - on Spicers Peak Station and Old Hidden Vale - where significant progress has been made in revegetating cleared land and clearing weed areas. Pest species management programs have been initiated to reduce introduced predator numbers and allow native species to repopulate.

The cornerstone of the Turners’ conservation efforts is the Hidden Vale Wildlife Centre - a long-term $18 million project in partnership with the University of Queensland. The Wildlife Centre’s focus is practical, with captive breeding and research programs providing students with hands-on experience in the management of Australian native species with a view to building self-sustaining populations of flora and fauna endemic to the region.

In 2018 Spicers introduced Glossy Black Coffee, a signature coffee blend named after the Glossy Black Cockatoo, an endangered native bird found in both of the designated nature refuges. Proceeds from the sale of beans go specifically towards the rehabilitation and conservation of the Glossy Black Cockatoo’s habitat.

At the heart of Spicers Retreats is a love for the environment and a deep desire to see people experience the wonder of nature in a sustainable way, without sacrificing luxury in the process.

Completely individual, each of the nine executive style hotel rooms and eight luxury suites set across two buildings are charming and inviting. And while it’s close to the Brisbane CBD and Fortitude Valley precincts, Spicers Balfour Hotel feels worlds away in the leafy surrounds of New Farm.

ACCOMMODATION

The nine Executive Rooms have a contemporary European feel matched with modern amenities. Ranging in size from 18sqm to 27sqm, they are spread over two floors within the main Balfour Hotel building. The rooms feature large windows to allow fresh, natural airflow.

The eight one bedroom Balfour Suites, located in the Simla building, are as spacious as they are luxurious. Reflecting the art deco style of the building, they are 43sqm in size with a spacious bedroom and bathroom, separate sitting area, luxury amenities, minibar, desk and all of the modern conveniences you would expect.

The Simla Room is open plan with floor to ceiling windows and partitioning walls creating a versatile event space in the heritage listed Simla building. With a fireplace, HD projector and one touch AV system, this space is perfect for small to medium sized events.

Our frangipani and fairy-light filled courtyard is the perfect year-round spot for a casual cocktail party or small dinner party.

Set on a gentle rise in the tranquil Sunshine Coast hinterland hills, Spicers Clovelly Estate has a reputation for exceptional dining and a wonderfully charming and relaxed atmosphere.

As you enter the property, passing between the grand figs, shaded jacarandas and groves of magnolias, the stunning frame of a French provincial style guest house greets on arrival. The estate unfolds in every direction around

the main guest house, surrounded by beautiful gardens, rolling grass hills and natural rainforest.

A short winding walk through the grounds leads to the west facing Lake View Deck overlooking Lake Baroon, while the garden terrace and pool take in sun-drenched views towards Montville.

ACCOMMODATION

Designed with luxurious comfort as the first priority, every one of the 10 suites in the main estate is an oasis of calm. From beautiful modern French furnishings, to the heated marbled bathrooms and luxurious linens, all rooms offer a subtle blend of the traditional and the modern.

The luxuriously appointed Montville House features six bedrooms, each with a private ensuite and its own distinctive character. The suites possess the elegant French provincial style that Spicers Clovelly Estate is known for plus unique design touches.

The estate also boasts a private French Cottage with three stylish bedrooms, two Carrara marble bathrooms, a private outdoor hot spa, private kitchen and open plan living area with modern European decor - perfect for small groups travelling together.

Located in Montville, a quaint hinterland town on the Sunshine Coast, the Retreat is just over one hour from Brisbane Airport, 35 minutes from Maroochydore Airport and 50 minutes from the beaches of Noosa and Coolum. The Tamarind Cooking School

Ideal for small groups, Montville House offers a private space for up to 25 people. Privately secluded from the rest of the property, the cottage has a communal guest lounge with an open fireplace and a private dining area where you can enjoy award winning cuisine from our onsite restaurant. Montville House is set up with AV equipment, video conferencing facilities and complimentary WiFi.

The Library accommodates up to 16 people with the added benefit of the adjoining covered deck, adorned with comfortable lounges for a ready-made breakout space.

The Library Deck is an inspiring space to meet in an informal setting on our outdoor deck overlooking the estate gardens.

The Conference Room is located near The Tamarind Restaurant and guest lounge, with easy access to the on-site accommodation via the tree lined pathways and timber boardwalks. This room is ideal for group meetings of all types with a fireplace at one end, and private deck access for fresh mountain air and natural light.

The Sala Room is a private and intimate space surrounded by lush vegetation overlooking the valley and forest. The indoor/ outdoor room is air conditioned with abundant natural light. All conference facilities include AV and complimentary WiFi.

Specialising in modern Asian cuisine, The Tamarind Restaurant’s menu effortlessly combines sweet, sour and spicy flavours and fresh local produce to create original interpretations of regional dishes. The restaurant is the hub of the property and is set in a tranquil outdoor pavilion designed to make the most of the peaceful location. With a long list of awards and accolades, The Tamarind focuses on the ingredient element, with the restaurant operating on a sustainable and locally sourced philosophy.

Set on 12,000 acres, Spicers Hidden Vale features an architecturally designed Homestead, Australian barn, beautifully restored colonial

cottages from a bygone era and a warm country welcome. The retreat offers space to relax, space to listen and space to embark on an adventure amidst abundant wildlife.

With a number of different indoor and outdoor spaces to explore, Spicers Hidden Vale is a unique luxury Australian experience.

ACCOMMODATION

Scattered amongst picturesque country gardens are elegant cottages dating back to the 1800s which have been beautifully restored into guest accommodation.

The 34 rooms and suites feature verandas with sweeping country views and open fireplaces, each with their own unique character. The four suites are stand-alone cottages with a separate lounge room and French doors opening out onto valley views.

LOCATION

Located in the Lockyer Valley region, Spicers Hidden Vale is only an hour’s drive from Brisbane, one hour from Toowoomba and Wellcamp Airport, and 90 minutes from the Gold Coast.

Private transfers can be arranged from Brisbane or the Gold Coast. For those with limited time, charter helicopter transfers can be booked to and from Brisbane, Toowoomba and Gold Coast Airports.

HIDDEN VALE ADVENTURE PARK

With over 110 kilometres of worldclass mountain bike trails, Hidden Vale Adventure Park (HVAP) offers a unique outdoor experience to guests. Trails cater for all levels of experience and a range of mountain bikes are available for hire from the trailhead. HVAP also offers Polaris ATV transfers from the trailhead to a number of the higher elevation points throughout the park.

Perfect for small to medium sized events, the Retreat offers a host of on-site meeting rooms with natural light and fresh country air.

The Laidley Room is situated at the top of the property and offers a deck area for enjoying meals and breaks. All popular set up styles are available and include AV equipment, video conferencing facilities and complimentary WiFi.

The Grandchester Room sits towards the property entrance with plenty of room to move, being the largest space to meet. It offers natural light, fresh air and a lounge area for an informal breakout. All conference facilities feature AV equipment, video conferencing facilities and complimentary WiFi.

The Barn, including a festoon lit courtyard, is the ideal spot for a private dinner or cocktail function for up to 80 delegates.

Completely rebuilt in 2020, the Boardroom in the Homestead provides a comfortable and private meeting space including integrated AV and closed loop hearing system.

Homage offers a menu that heroes produce grown in our garden or locally sourced. Homage is open for dinner 7 nights a week. A 2 or 3 course à la carte lunch menu is also available from Wednesday-Sunday, and a light lunch menu is available from Monday-Tuesday.

As the name suggests, Homage pays respect to the land, the local farmers and the produce itself. Created around the paddock to plate philosophy, the menu is inspired by the abundant local produce. From fresh seasonal vegetables picked from our market garden to local freshwater cray and beef from our neighbouring farmers, this is dining in its purest form.

Looking for something more low-key but just as flavourful? The Barn is casual dining at its finest. Embodying the Homage ethos of honouring the land, the people and the produce, The Barn serves simple and satisfying dishes with distinctive flavours in a relaxed setting. Open 11:30am-4:00pm Friday-Sunday.

Perched atop a mountain on 8,000 acres in Queensland’s High Country, enveloped by the World Heritage Listed Main Range National Park and the Great Dividing Range, Spicers Peak Lodge offers an exclusive, intimate Australian wilderness lodge experience.

The Lodge sits 1,100 metres above sea level with views across to the surrounding peaks. From untouched rainforest and rugged mountain escarpments to the pristine backdrop of a World

Heritage Listed National Park and ancient volcanic regions, there is no shortage of unspoiled wilderness to experience and admire.

The architecturally designed Lodge is an eclectic mix of contemporary and classic design and has been created with its stunning natural environment in mind.

CLIMATE

ACCOMMODATION

The Lodge’s suites provide an ideal escape with uninterrupted views of the world below. Centuryold Scottish bluestone and wide recycled timber floorboards add a touch of style and sophistication to the uniquely relaxing ambiance.

The Lodge Suites in the main building are spacious with open fireplaces, private verandas and some with large spa baths. Our Spa Suites enjoy the same outlook and amenities as the Lodge Suites, with the addition of large spa baths. The two Loft Suites boast elevated views with cosy reading nooks and direct access to the mezzanine library.

Perched on the edge of the escarpment are two luxurious,

private standalone lodges, featuring separate lounge rooms and outdoor spas, open fireplaces and private verandas with panoramic views of Spicers Gap. Children are catered for in the private lodges only.

An in-room mini bar is included as part of the stay, and is replenished daily with premium inclusions.
