WELCOME TO INNOVATION & TECH All you need to know about technology trends across platforms
Publisher’s Note Dear Readers, With this edition of Innovation & Tech, we are pleased to highlight a trend in its early stages of adoption in the MENA region. Mobility used to mean having a phone and access to email, contacts and web browsing, and little else. But in advanced markets, things are changing with almost a third of the workforce now “anytime, anywhere information workers” who use three or more devices. In the MENA market, we are seeing accelerating interest in the development and use of custom enterprise mobile apps, transforming the way in which organizations work. Mobility allows for the transformation of business processes that long needed revamping. It also enhances employee engagement in the company and leads to a more tightly connected work community. When employees can work from anywhere, they can do more. It cuts time spent on commutes to the office and gives employees full schedule flexibility. It increases employee happiness, productivity and efficiency while they’re on the clock. Mobile devices and platforms like the cloud permit heightened mobility and encourage creative innovation without being strapped to a desk. This freedom results in a more efficient worker, a competent workplace, and a better bottom line. We have also featured a review of the flagship phones of Apple and Samsung - information that most mobile users are keen to know about - as well as a feature on connected cars and the forces that are making them a reality. And lastly, I feel proud to announce the third edition of our industry-leading Global Innovation Summit 2016. With over 2,000+ high profile delegates including entrepreneurs, C-level executives, government dignitaries and influencers, the event offers a perfect platform to showcase Innovation, a key differentiator of market leaders. This summit is an ultimate thought leadership platform for fostering innovation in the region and the biggest congregation of thinkers and futurists. It provides solutions to emerging challenges , forecasts trends, simplifies the impact of disruptive technologies and unveils opportunities. The summit boasts of a powerful agenda and attractions such as an amazing expo, disruptive innovator awards, workshops, keynotes etc. Hope to see you there. Best Regards, Shantanu Phansalkar CEO, SPI Group.

amsung has announced the launch of the Galaxy Entertainer App in conjunction with the launch of its flagship Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphones. The application that is preloaded on to new smartphones includes over 1,000 buy 1 get 1 free offers that provides unparalleled access to global hotspots including restaurants, luxury hotels, cafés, premium spas, leisure attractions, golf clubs and much more. The combined value of the savings (inclusive of international locations) is estimated to be over AED 390,000.

Local establishments that are part of the experience including Bab Al Shams, Park Hyatt, Emirates Towers, JW Marriot Marquis, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray and renowned golf courses including The Address Montgomerie Dubai, Arabian Ranches Golf Club and the Els Club, to name a few in the UAE
Speaking of the launch of the dedicated application, Tarek Sabbagh, Head of IT and Mobile Division, Samsung Gulf Electronics said, “In addition to maximizing the user experience, the latest Galaxy S7 has been developed to redefine what a phone can do. Adding all these sensory experiences to the smartphones is an extension of our belief that our devices are the ultimate digital companions; probably the only
pieces of technology one would need even in the ultimate realms of tranquility and luxury.” In addition to UAE outlets, the offers are redeemable in several global locations in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Cape Town.

DESIGN
CAMERA
The Galaxy S7 Edge is easily one of the best looking and best-made phones available and the iPhone 6s Plus is starting to show its age. Apple's design was big when it first launched 18 months ago with the iPhone 6 Plus, and it’s even more noticeable now that Android phones are getting smaller and slimmer, despite featuring big screens.
Both phones have really fast shutter times, and can take burst-mode shots at very fast speeds. Both have 12MP sensors, both have optical image stabilization and phase-detection autofocus. But, the one specification that makes all the difference with the S7 Edge is its aperture. At f/1.7, Samsung’s phone is better at grabbing light in lowlight conditions, and has fantastic depth of field. This allows you to take shots with some awesome background blur.
Being much narrower and shorter than the 6s Plus means that the Galaxy S7 Edge is easier to use one-handed. A great design feature is that the Galaxy S7 Edge is water and dust resistant, thanks to built in seals and membranes over the ports and grilles.
DISPLAY With the 6s Plus and S7 Edge, it’s a battle of the best AMOLED panel versus the best LCD. The difference in sharpness between the 1080p resolution iPhone screen and Quad HD display isn’t noticeable at all. As a kicker, Samsung’s screen is curved at the edges. This enables a handful of interesting features and adds that little something extra to the display’s overall appeal. Content curls around the edges, and almost makes the phone look edgeto-edge.
PERFORMANCE & BATTERY When it comes to overall performance, reliability and battery life, there’s very little to separate the S7 Edge from the 6s Plus. Both are equally capable of loading intense graphics, so whether you love watching movies or gaming on your device, you’ll have a great time with either.
SOFTWARE + FEATURES Samsung and Apple, as usual, took slightly different approaches when adding unique features to their lineleading smartphones. Apple’s pressure sensitive touchscreen is genuinely useful and uncovers an extra user interface layer of options. It combines with Live Photos (a feature which
captures video right up until the photo is taken) to add animations to your photos. While it doesn’t have the pressure sensitive screen, the Samsung camera is capable of taking motion photos. Samsung has its own unique tricks too; like the Always-On display which shows the clock, calendar or image and notification icons without draining much battery on the lock screen at all times. It also has a split-screen multitasking view for using two apps side-by-side, and swapping information between them. There’s also the model-specific Edge panel for quick access to favorite contacts, apps and functions on the side of the display.
WRAP-UP As an overall package, at least when considering the hardware, it seems to me that the S7 Edge is quite possibly the best phone on the market right now. It’s elegantly designed, fast, has a great camera and great battery life. There’s very little to dislike about it. Likewise, despite its size, the 6s Plus is still a very, very good smartphone. Apart from the camera and (perhaps) design, it matches the Galaxy S7 Edge in every department.

SAMSUNG UPGRADES GEAR S2 cycle through. Keep going with the bezel and it simply takes you to the next screen of apps.
Notifications are there, messages are there, call logs, third party apps… You can't get lost. One niggle is that images, say from WhatsApp, don't display on the watch. Tizen supports Bluetooth – the S2 works with most Android phones. It has Wi-Fi on board – pull down to see if it's in 'standalone' mode or paired to a phone – as well as NFC for Samsung Pay.

And it can go very bright – probably DESIGN The stainless steel and plastic editions look like watches and feel well made. The Classic model's ridged bezel, leather strap and smaller body combine for a premium feel, and it can be easily fitted with third party straps.
THAT ROTATING BEZEL The Gear S2's rotating bezel has transformed it into a satisfying, addictive and intuitive way of interacting with the smartwatch. When you move your hand to hover over the watch on your wrist it's the exact place your fingers land, even when you aren't looking down yet, and thanks to some clever UI design in its Tizen OS, you can switch between apps, cycle back to notifications, change volume and

TIZEN OS Tizen has always been a gamble for Samsung but this time it has paid off. Unlike the Android Wear watches, the Gear S2 is easy to use. The home screen is the watch face screen and you simply rotate left one click for recent notifications. Rotate right to get to a screen with an apps icon, settings, buddies (for quick messages) and S Voice. Keep rotating right and you can get easily glanceable information – weather, S Health progress, heart rate and information from third party apps. Choose the apps menu instead and Tizen makes the most of the circular screen and bezel with round app icons around the edge of the display to

BATTERY LIFE AND CHARGING The battery life on the Gear S2 is better than most smartwatches. Of course it depends how you use it – whether you go for the always on screen, how much you use apps like S Voice and Maps, etc. The 300mAh battery inside is officially good for three days.

BUSINESS MOBILITY
MOBILITY: AT THE CENTRE OF BUSINESS
oing mobile used to mean having a phone and access to email, contacts and web browsing, but little else. For laptop users, mobility has often required a virtual private network connection just to get at email or data held back at the office.
G
But things are changing now. According to Forrester Research, 29 percent of the global workforce are now “anytime, anywhere information workers” who use three or more devices, while Gartner predicts that mobile app projects will outnumber PC-focused app projects by a ratio of 4:1 by 2015. We are seeing a rapid acceleration in the development and use of custom enterprise mobile apps, transforming the way in which organizations work.
THE BENEFITS OF MOBILITY Mobility allows for the transformation of business processes that long needed revamping. It also enhances employee engagement in the company and leads to a more tightly connected work community. When employees can work from anywhere, they can do more. It cuts time spent on commutes to the office and gives employees full schedule flexibility.
16
Mobility increases employee happiness— and we all know that happier employees get more done. Empowered employees display more productivity and efficiency while they’re on the clock. Mobile devices and platforms like the cloud permit heightened mobility and encourage creative innovation without being strapped to a desk. This freedom results in a more efficient worker, a competent workplace, and a better bottom line.
GLOBAL STATE OF ENTERPRISE MOBILITY 2016 Over 300 senior mobility practitioners were polled worldwide by Enterprise Mobility Exchange.

BUSINESS MOBILITY The report found that 60.8 percent of respondents had invested in mobile applications development in the last 12 to 18 months. 44.6 percent had invested in mobile & enterprise security and the same number in mobile connectivity. Meanwhile, 43.8 percent had invested in mobile device management and 36.2 percent in solutions for BYOD. The key reason for the investments was increasing productivity, which 74.6 percent of respondents cited. 63.8 percent and 60.8 percent cited improving customer service and improving operational efficiency respectively. Looking at the challenges they had faced in implementing the solutions, 47.7 percent cited integrating with legacy systems. The main thing that respondents said they had learned from their implementations was to "Thing big, but start smaller." Meanwhile, areas earmarked for investment in the next 12 to 18 months included mobile application development by
50.4 percent, mobile and enterprise security by 38.8 percent and cloud computing by 33.9 percent.
OFF-THE-SHELF AND CUSTOM APPS ARE BECOMING COMMONPLACE CRM and ERP vendors already offer offthe-shelf mobile apps as standard – soon, sales force automation apps will be as common as e-mail on mobile devices. This signals the maturity of packaged mobile apps, and increasingly they are gaining acceptance and credibility by delivering real improvements in business efficiency. More companies are developing custom mobile apps that are tailored to the specific needs of the organization, and can integrate with many types of back-end systems. This is possible because software companies are delivering powerful mobile infrastructure platforms with integrated security capabilities, such as remote wiping of data from lost devices and the ability to keep sensitive data on back-end servers.
PERSONAL INFRASTRUCTURE WILL
DRIVE CORPORATE SUCCESS
With the availability and rapid adoption of smartphones and tablets, especially by knowledge workers, businesses are increasingly putting BYOD policy at the heart of their mobile strategy. Ultimately, the benefits of being able to work with your employees in such a deep and intimate manner – with a device that they keep by their side at nearly all times – far outweighs the costs involved.
MOBILITY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER The SMB Group found that 59 percent of companies view mobile solutions and services as “critical” to their business, McCabe says. But mobility can backfire if it’s poorly managed. Businesses need a a wellplanned strategy for getting the most out of their mobile investments or integrating them with the rest of their IT infrastructures. To avoid problems, experts advise IT managers to implement enterprise mobility management

BUSINESS MOBILITY (EMM) Nsolutions that provide a holistic view of company-provisioned assets, as well as tools employed in a bring-your-own-device program. EMM solutions also can centrally administer internal rules for network and information access. New opportunitiesare emerging for re-engineering business processes, especially when companies combine mobility with other developments such as the Internetof Things (IoT). Businesses can review existing processes with an eye toward mobility solutions that simplify and automate less productive areas while revealing new business opportunities. In addition, highmobility endpoints can help customerfacing personnel, such as wait staff or retail sales associates, enter orders or access product information as they’re talking with clients.
STRATEGIES TO ENCOURAGE MOBILE ADOPTION Whether you’re blessed with gung-ho thought leaders or faced with grumbling resistance, you can inject mobility into your
company with a few of these suggestions: t 1SPNPUF BQQT XJUIJO ZPVS DPNQBOZ instead of leaving app discovery to chance. When your employees encounter a workplace problem of any sort, let them know there’s an app for that. t %P BXBZ XJUI FNQMPZFF TFDVSJUZ concerns (67% of employees cited this as the reason for resisting mobility) by investing in a mobility program that directly deals with the security challenges specific to your industry. t "TTVSF FNQMPZFFT UIBU UIF 30* JT well worth the effort it might take for them to get comfortable with this new mobile-focused world. This ensures there will be no technical issues for people with smartphones versus people with tablets, for example. t *OWFTU JO BQQT UIBU BJE JO DPSF businesses processes at your company, making it easier for employees who have adopted mobility to succeed.
As mentioned above, research shows that firms pushing greater numbers of enterprise apps are getting an edge over the competition by giving their employees technologically-advanced tools of the trade. Studies show that the move toward custom apps is growing, especially when it comes to productivity apps—with 56% of those polled saying they have the most positive business impact, ahead of field service (50%) and sales (44%) applications. Investing in apps is the best way to ensure your company stays ahead of the learning curve and ultimately provides job security.
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR BUSINESSES? Never before have businesses had the opportunity to interact so closely with their employees. Organizations can no longer procrastinate about mobilizing the enterprise. Taking charge of their mobile initiatives can significantly enhance productivity and positively impact the bottom-line.

MOBILE SECURITY
CYBERSECURITY IN A MOBILITY AGE Jenny Tsuboyama ShiftIN partners
THE CONDITIONAL FREEDOM OF THE TELEWORK The future of work is already here among us. Work is no longer a place. It is something that we do, whenever and wherever a challenge arises and even with whatever device that is most suitable for our individual performance. I am sure many of us use our own personal devices, from desktops, laptops, tablets to latest smartphones. Telework is a reality and in the coming years, more companies and organizations will increase its adoption due to the global trend of empowering employees to transform businesses and the concept of smart cities. This phenomenon will allow growth with agility through cost reduction while enabling employee’s mobility and freedom to drive strategic value, build relationships and networks, to manage risks and finances.
HOW ARE CYBER THREATS IMPACTING CRITICAL ENTITY DATA AND INFRASTRUCTURE? A promising digital future is already here for virtualized business, e-banking, global supply chain and collaborative networks; however without a proper protection in terms of availability and confidentiality, some security liabilities like IP theft, disruption of service, cybercrime, manipulate supply chain, may throw away the advantages of mobility and adoption of digital technologies and innovations
in the new workplace of this digital era. Therefore IT must be able to secure and control business information to maintain protection, privacy and compliance.
THE UAE CYBERSECURITY LANDSCAPE AND THE ROLE OF THE NATIONAL ELECTRONIC SECURITY AGENCY –NESA According to a report, Middle East organizations are unprepared, showing that “68% of organizations in the Middle East lack the internal capabilities to protect themselves against sophisticated cyberattacks” “Cybersecurity is one of the biggest economic and national security challenges countries face in the 21st century," said His Excellency Jassem Bu Ataba Al Zaabi, director general of NESA."The National Electronic Security Authority was established… to defend and protect the nation's ICT infrastructure... NESA is committed to ensuring that all UAE government bodies are made fully aware of the responsibility they now have to meet the requirements of these polices and, in turn, what this means in practice going forward." In its mission, NESA has published the The National Cyber Security Strategy (NCSS), Critical Information Infrastructure Policy (CIIP) and The UAE Information Assurance (IA) Standards.

MOBILE SECURITY TO DRIVE WORKPLACE EFFICIENCY AND SATISFACTION, WHAT IS THE ROLE OF MOBILITY? According to Harvard Business Review, workplace choice is just one part of a broader culture of autonomy. With the support of organizational policy, and the right alignment of tools and technology to optimize productivity, it allows workers to optimize their own job performance, allowing more creativity, satisfaction and motivation, which in turn creates higher performance
HOW TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN MOBILITY AND CYBERSECURITY AND ACHIEVE A SUCCESSFUL DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION? There is an increasing need to have the business and ICT integrated. The overall business strategy should include the digital part as well as any risk (financial, operational, reputational, strategic, legal or environmental). Executives and managers should be equipped not only with business or IT concepts, but with the accurate and sufficient skills, frameworks, process and tools that allow them to understand both sides of the coin and to communicate with them. In a way, we need to build awareness of the business/digital consequences to decision making process and ensure at least one individual in each organization can explain digital scenarios in layman terminology. Many people and organizations wonder how they can be prepared to adjust their strategies and operations to the digitalization, having in consideration the mobility and cybersecurity aspects. Such demanding situation have made ShiftIN Partners to partner with

Solucom to blend the best of each other’s expertise. ShiftIN Partners helps private and public organizations across ten core areas as follows: strategy development, strategy translation, risk management, initiative management, cascading and alignment, human capital alignment, strategy communication, operational & digital, reporting and decision making, innovate & learn. Solucom is keenly focusing on Risk Management & Information security, Digital Innovation and IT Systems Architecture, especially on the following sectors: banking & insurance, energy, transports and telcos.
ShiftIN Partners and Solucom can help to understand NESA’s policies and support your organization to align to them. Therefore, to bridge the gap between cybersecurity and mobility, cybersecurity professionals should be able to communicate with business stakeholders and be able to show how security affects the business bottom line and be aware of international standards like ISO 27001 and the NESA’s policies. Are you align with The National Cyber Security Strategy (NCSS), Critical Information Infrastructure Policy (CIIP) and The UAE Information Assurance (IA) Standard from NESA?

It's pretty cheap and its small size will appeal to people who stopped upgrading their iPhones when they started getting too big. And most important, it's powerful. If you're looking for a first-rate smartphone that won't break the bank -- or your hand -- the iPhone SE deserves a spot on your short list.
A
DISPLAY AND SOUND The screen's a tad less bright than that of either the 6s or 6s Plus, and the color temperature is a little warmer, too. Meanwhile, the single speaker tucked into the SE's bottom edge is punchy, especially with highs and mids.
SOFTWARE The iPhone SE ships with iOS 9.3, which doesn't add much in the way of
26
whizbang features. If anything, the most notable addition is Night Shift, a feature that can automatically warm up the screen's color temperature to ease eyestrain at night. You can now also lock specific entries in the Notes app; opening them requires either a password or putting your finger on the Touch ID sensor. The Health app now highlights software that pipes in movement and nutrition data, which is especially nice on the SE; its smaller size makes it a more pleasant workout buddy.
CAMERA The iPhone SE supports shooting Live Photos, moving images that add a little flair and context to your shots. Since
there's no 3D Touch here, a long press on a Live Photo will make it spring into action. The other thing is that your selfies just don't turn out as nice as they do with the 6s but the SE has its Retina Flash, which lights up the screen to add some extra brightness.
PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY LIFE The combination of Apple's currentgen A9 chipset with 2GB of RAM is enough to keep things running smoothly, from swiping through home screens to switching between apps to firing up graphically intensive games. The iPhone SE still has the best battery life of any iPhone in the past two years.

THE PRACTICAL RAMIFICATION OF RAPID URBANIZATION IN WATER SCARCE REGIONS IS THAT INNOVATION TO ACHIEVE WATER SECURITY IS URGENT. WATER SECTOR INNOVATION STRATEGIES MUST BE PURSUED ON MULTIPLE FRONTS, INCLUDING DESALINATION, WATER RECYCLE AND REUSE AND WATER USE EFFICIENCY. ccording to the World Bank, approximately 54 percent of the world’s population lives in urban areas today and by the middle of the
A
century this proportion will grow to as much as 70 percent. Coupled with this growth in urbanization is the increasing challenge of water scarcity in many of the most rapidly developing parts of the world, such as the Middle East. The practical ramification of rapid urbanization in water scarce regions is that innovation to achieve water security is urgent. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other water scarce nations, water sector innovation strategies must be pursued on multiple fronts, including desalination, water recycle and reuse and water use efficiency. Collectively, the UAE and other countries located along Arabian Gulf have populations that are more than 70 percent located in urban areas and, on a per capita basis, consume much more water than the world average despite having extremely limited rainfall and groundwater supplies. In response, these countries have constructed the most extensive network of desalination plants in the world to produce fresh water. These plants produce millions
of cubic meters of fresh water from seawater each day, meeting immediate water supply needs but at a heavy environmental and economic cost. The predominantly thermal desalination plants constructed in the past have contributed to the region’s status as one of the highest carbon dioxide emitting regions in the world and have required the use of natural gas and oil that otherwise could be put to more productive economic purposes, such as international export or use in petrochemical production. In order to move away from reliance on thermal desalination to meet water supply needs, innovation is required. One area of required innovation is high efficiency and low cost desalination systems. Desalination, however, is just one solution. In the context of urbanization and “smart city” design, "smart water" becomes a very relevant concept as it relates to water and wastewater infrastructure for effective and efficient water management. A smart water system must be designed to collect meaningful and actionable data about water flow, pressure, distribution and consumption. Likewise wastewater treatment and utilization are key to generating water for residential, agricultural and industrial uses as well as energy production. On the latter point, there are several examples of wastewater treatment facilities that produce more energy than required for their operations and provide the excess energy back to the electrical grid. In fact, at Masdar Institute we are exploring
energy neutral and energy positive wastewater treatment with partner organizations such as General Electric. Necessary innovations in the water sector encompass a wide variety of solutions and are central to the overall clean tech innovation landscape. As an illustration of this point, the 2015 Global Cleantech 100 ranking released by the Cleantech Group in early 2016 contains several geographically dispersed, early stage water and wastewater companies. Included in the list are Fathom (United States), providing cloud based softwareas-a-service (SaaS) solutions for municipalities to manage water systems, Orbital Systems (Sweden), developing of an efficient closed loop, water recycling shower unit that uses an offthe-shelf microfilter and nanofilter membranes, Organica Water

(Hungary), providing Fixed-Bed Biofilm Activated Sludge (FBAS) wastewater treatment plants in urban and residential population centers, OxyMem (Ireland), developing efficient aeration systems for wastewater treatment that reportedly can reduce energy consumption by 60% to 80% and achieve similar reductions for plant footprint and sludge production as compared to coarse bubble aeration systems, Saltworks Technologies (Canada), providing advanced systems for desalination, brine management and chemical recovery applications and TaKaDu (Israel), providing a webbased platform that monitors water distribution networks and gives real-time alerts on inefficiencies, water loss, faults and other network problems. Perhaps surprisingly, not one of these companies is located in the Arab world where the need for water innovation is significant. At the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, the need for locally tailored solutions to address regional water challenges is at the top of our agenda.
32
Our water and environment research strategy reflects the convergence of innovations in materials science, information science and applied technologies that is demonstrated by the 2015 Cleantech 100 list of companies. Specifically, we have developed a strategy that includes at its core enhanced material systems, including computational materials design, smart sensors and artificial intelligence. These platform capabilities feed into the development of new technologies for clean water production, water recycle and reuse and water efficiency. This approach allows us to partner with leading water technology companies, such as Trevi Systems, Suez Environnement, Abengoa and Veolia in water technology demonstrations, while at the same time advancing our platform capabilities in the materials and information sciences. This strategy of use-inspired fundamental research allows us to move toward the forefront of water sector innovation for an
urbanized, water scarce region and, in time, produce new companies that can compete on the global scale.

TRANSPORT INNOVATION
MOBILE CAR APPS CAN DRIVE MIDDLE EAST’S AUTO SAFETY, ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS AND INNOVATION-LED ECONOMY, SAYS PRAKASH DARJI OF SAP eing stuck in a morning rush hour commute is one of the most common and frustrating aspects of living in the Middle East.
B
But the rapid rise of connected cars in the Internet of Things era could pave the way for transforming driving in cities. Already digital tolls, driverless metros, personal pod trains, and spaceports demonstrate the Middle East’s capability for driving transportation innovation. While technology may not hold all of the answers to make our daily commutes easier – physical infrastructure still plays a major role in traffic -- auto manufacturers and technologists are busy developing the next generation of connected cars that can enhance commuting, driver safety, and environmental standards, and boost the region’s innovation-led economy. By 2030, IT experts predict at least 50 billion devices will be connected to networks – including car engines and
tires, parking spaces, and streets and highways. Being prototyped in technology labs are real-time analytics for navigation systems for fuel-efficient routes, performance systems that alert insurance companies to accidents and auto dealers to car performance, and safety systems that identify drivers and avoid collisions. As a result, global connected product sales are set to grow almost four-fold by 2020, from 31 billion Euros in 2015 to 113 billion Euros by 2020, according to a recent industry report.
GETTING BEHIND THE WHEEL OF CONNECTED CAR APPS Middle East cities can look to Barcelona, which recently hosted mobile parking innovations as part of the recent Mobile World Congress, where Volkswagen Group’s SEAT, Samsung
Electronics, and SAP announced a gamechanging mobile parking partnership. At the exhibition center, attendees could use a mobile app to search for a parking space near their destination, reserve the parking space with fingerprint recognition, and when exiting make a digital payment. Applied city-wide, from the boulevards of Beirut to the roads of Doha, this app could reduce the amount of time spent for parking, as studies show that cruising for downtown parking takes up 30 percent of driving. People driving less could drastically reduce emissions and greenhouse gases, providing a healthier population and enhancing the environment. On the road, Middle East drivers can find enhanced safety features such as reduced speeding and tailgating, potentially a game-changer in reducing human error and accidents. Insurance companies and the police could even boost “gamification” of driving, by rewarding safe drivers with discounts or

special offers from local partners. Another innovation, the Digital Key allows the user to securely share a car key via a mobile app. Users can also set time limits on the digital key so that when the time expires, the key can no longer be shared digitally. No more locking yourself out or having a second setoff keys printed, and potentially protecting against unlicensed drivers or even burglars. With the Digital Key, users can remotely lock and unlock doors, turn on air conditioning, close the windows, and in the near future, the mobile app could also set maximum speed limits or specify the driving mode such as on highways, sand, or rain to enhance efficiency and safety. Meanwhile, the new MY SEAT app launched by SEAT and Accenture advances pop-up displays to the mobile device, with dashboard warnings and alerts, offering driving tips based on the driver’s behavior to reduce fuel consumption and auto maintenance.
MIDDLE EAST IN FAST LANE FOR CONNECTED CARS In the Middle East, connected cars and smart traffic are key elements of
36
Smart Cities such as Dubai, Lusail City in Qatar, and the four Economic Cities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. With the region posting the world’s strongest auto demand – 75 percent of consumers plan to buy a new car by 2017, according to one dealer – and hosting hyper-connected IT infrastructure, connected cars are set to kick into high gear this decade. On the front end, organizations could use geo-location based marketing to make offers via mobile apps when a driver passes by a restaurant or shop. Supply chains are poised to benefit as well, with large auto fleets being automated to enhance efficiency of global supply chains and to reduce the wear-and-tear on long-haul drivers. Public-private partnerships between auto manufacturers, technology innovators, service providers, utilities, and government regulators will be essential for driving connected cars in the Middle East. These organizations can work together to provide the city-wide broadband and in-road sensors to encourage innovative driving applications, developing safety regulations and technology policies, and overall growing the global Smart Car economy.
Still, connected cars cannot become reality in the Middle East overnight. Auto manufacturers, dealers, and service centers will need to upskill local talent who can not only service the connected car IT infrastructure, but also connect with and monetize customer relations. With driverless cars already hitting the road in the United States, 2017 is the last chance for the Middle East’s auto industry to adopt the latest mobile technology, or they will find themselves running on empty when driverless cars become a reality here by 2020.

GOOGLE CARDBOARD Google Cardboard ($10-$25) and its many siblings from various manufacturers all do the same thing: They turn any iPhone (or Android) handset into a virtual reality viewer. Targeted to VR novices who want to see what the buzz is all about, Cardboard is essentially a proof of concept in an easily assembled cardboard package. Use the accompanying Cardboard app as an entrée or choose from a huge number of compatible apps and games available for the platform. Cardboard delivers a basic and minimalist VR experience and most headsets come without head straps. The viewer is as good as your smartphone, so the higher your screen resolution, the better the picture. If you like what you see, the Cardboard experience can help you choose a more substantial and comfortable headset for the future
ZEISS VR ONE Famous for its high-end camera lenses, Zeiss has now entered the VR arena with the VR One headset ($129 with tray). Customized slide-out trays hold various iPhone and Android models while its plastic construction makes it a lightweight viewer for Cardboard apps. The design and lenses are high quality, aesthetically pleasing, and can be comfortably worn with eyeglasses. No lens adjustment is needed for interpupillary distance (the space between the center of each eye’s pupil). OCULUS RIFT Not Mac or iOS compatible. A brand new consumer version of the famed Oculus Rift virtual reality HMD is currently available for pre-order ($599). This non-developer Rift will feature a 2160 x 1200 resolution, 110-degree viewing angle, and built-in audio and mic wrapped in a black fabric frame. It will ship with a wireless Xbox One game controller and small sensor to track user head movements and create an immersive 3D environment while tethered to your PC. Oculus also plans a later release (around the second half of 2016) of the Oculus Touch dedicated hand controllers that will simulate more natural hand movements
SONY PLAYSTATION VR Not Mac or iOS compatible. Previously known as Project Morpheus, Sony's renamed PlayStation VR concentrates heavily on—surprise—games. Because of its longstanding expertise in console systems, Sony's prototype has a finished, refined look with a 5.7-inch, 1080p resolution OLED display, 100-degree field of vision, 360-degree head tracking, 120Hz refresh rate, and latency of less than 18 milliseconds. The headset will connect with Sony’s PlayStation 4, whose graphics processor is designed to handle stereoscopic 3D. Launch date is sometime in the first half of 2016
MICROSOFT HOLOLENS Not Mac or iOS compatible. HoloLens ($3,000 for the developer kit), Microsoft’s augmented reality headset, occupies a special place in the landscape, apart from typical VR headsets. Today, it is more of a professional tool than a consumer product: A developer kit will be available soon. Augmented reality supplements (augments) the real world rather than replaces it, as VR seeks to do, so that viewing an environment through a headset doesn’t impair your vision or make you sick. With HoloLens, you see integrated holograms—light structures—that people who are not wearing the headset don’t see, based on scripts downloaded to a Windows 10 computer built into the headset. Thus, HoloLens facilitates untethered viewing of high-resolution 3D objects that Microsoft is targeting for home, business, academic, scientific, medical, and yes, gaming applications
HTC VIVE Not Mac or iOS compatible. The HTC Vive ($799) headset was developed with gaming company Valve, and is powered by Valve’s SteamVR platform. The Vive HMD requires more free space to operate than most VR setups and works with two laser-tracking base stations (cameras), two controllers, and a headset wired to a PC. The cameras track your location and movements for extensive interactivity as you move around the room—hopefully steering clear of the Sébastien Pavie VR experience is a major lamp. MOBILITY nnual spending on mobility across the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa (META) is expected to reach $185 billion by 2019, according to IDC's new 'Mobility Spending Guide'. This represents a 10.2% share of worldwide enterprise and consumer spending on mobile devices, software, and services, which is forecast to total $1.8 trillion in 2019.
A
Mobility is one of the four pillars that make up IDC's 3rd Platform – a series of emerging technologies that have disrupted traditional business processes and continue to create transformative opportunities for vendors eager to engage a wider set of customers. This IDC semi-annual spending guide outlines spending in both the enterprise and consumer segments in great detail across technology categories (mobile devices, software, and services), and across industries, geographies, and
industry sizes. META's most active countries in this regard are Saudi Arabia, Turkey, South Africa, and the UAE.
the technology categories. Software spending will grow from $164.3 million in 2015 to $330 million in 2019. Although companies in META lag behind Western Europe in the adoption of mobility, approximately 64% of companies in the region have plans to make modestto-major investments in business applications for mobile devices ('IDC Enterprise Communications Survey'). Large companies are more active in this respect. In 2015, 49% of mobility software spending in META was attributed to enterprises with over 500 employees, but small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are expected to grow strongly. t .BOVGBDUVSJOH SFUBJM BOE CBOLJOH BOE financial services are among the early adopters of mobility. While the low penetration rates across Africa naturally present considerable growth potential for mobility, the ongoing economic diversification measures underway in the GCC will also drive the growth of mobility across the META region. However, the prevailing slump in global crude oil prices might impact the investment propensity of enterprises in the short-to-medium term."

Mobility spending (including hardware, software, and services) by META manufacturing organizations will grow from $5.8 billion in 2015 to $6.5 billion in 2019. Meanwhile, both the retail and banking & financial services verticals will see increases from approximately $3 billion to $3.8 billion in 2019 over the same period.

PERHAPS NO SECTOR EMBODIES ISLAMIC FINANCE’S PASSION FOR COMMUNITY BETTER THAN P2P, WHICH IS BUILT UPON THE PRINCIPLE OF RISK SHARING BY CONNECTING INVESTORS AND BUSINESSES TO CREATE MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL PARTNERSHIPS FOR GROWTH. n a decade or so Islamic finance has become a global, multi-billion dollar industry, growing an average of 20% annually between 2009 and 2013, to reach nearly 1% of global financial assets. The growth of the industry has outpaced conventional banking in recent years, and by the end of last year, the global market for Islamic finance was estimated to be worth around US$1.3 trillion.
I
The rapid growth of the global Islamic finance is highlighted by the remarkable demand for ethical financial products. This was made especially clear through the issuances of essentially Shariah-compliant bonds, or sukuks, in major financial markets such as London and Hong Kong in recent years. Both Muslim and non-Muslim investors can look to gain from these lower-risk Islamic financial instruments as a clear alternative to traditional financial products and services. The Islamic finance industry faces new challenges to its growth. The sector’s return on assets has fallen in recent years amid tougher competition from conventional peers, as well as to a contraction in net interest margins. Traditional lenders have benefited from their ability to leverage technology to gain access to critical infrastructure, keeping their cost-to-income ratios low. As a far more specialized sector, the Islamic finance industry must invest more into innovation to customize a wide range of financial products to make them Sharia-compliant. The continued success and growth of the Islamic finance industry will ultimately depend on the ability of financial institutions to adapt new financial products and concepts in line with Sharia law. Continued innovation will be driven by an increased global
demand for a more ethical, lower-risk financial model, from an industry estimated to range from $1.66 trillion to $2.1 trillion, with expectations of market size to grow to $3.4 trillion by the end of 2018. By applying the innovative technology of crowdfunding, Beehive became the first peer-to-peer (P2P) finance platform in the UAE, introducing a process that eliminates the cost and complexity of conventional finance. It also extended this innovation to develop a shariacompliant P2P finance platform that allows Islamic investors to take full advantage of the opportunities P2P finance has to offer, while providing complete confidence that their ethical values are adhered to and respected. Sharia-compliant finance requests on Beehive are processed under a ‘Commodity Murabaha’ structure, using the ‘DMCC Tradeflow’ platform operated by the UAE-based Dubai Multi Commodities Centre. In September 2015, Beehive pioneered a world first. The platform was certificated as Sharia-compliant by the Shariya Review Bureau (SRB), making it the first P2P platform in the world to independently confirm its processes are compliant with Sharia principles. Perhaps no sector understands the Islamic finance industry’s passion for community better than P2P, which is built upon the principle of risk sharing by connecting investors and businesses to create mutually beneficial partnerships for growth. Innovative products like this support Dubai’s vision of becoming a major global Islamic Economy. Dubai also has an opportunity to become the global fintech
hub for Islamic finance. The main pillar of the strategy is focused on developing the Emirates’ Islamic banking and finance sector by expanding its customer base and by introducing new innovative financial instruments that comply with contemporary needs and do not conflict with the principles of Islamic sharia law. Beehive introduced an entirely new product to the Islamic finance industry, giving Islamic investors the opportunity to benefit from the growth of some of the UAE’s fastest-growing SMEs, while at the same time contributing to the growth of the wider economy. This was in many ways a demonstration of how companies need to innovate based on specific market needs. The crowdfunding industry in the Middle East has now passed its experimental stage and is set to find to new ways to connect and improve the way businesses grow. 2015 was the year that the world’s first independently certified Sharia product came to market from a local UAE company, now let’s see what 2016 has to offer.

SME TECH
t will come as little surprise to most that small businesses are playing an increasingly important role in the global economy. Figures from 2010, cited by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, notes that in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, SMEs account for an average of nearly 64% of GDP and 62% of employment. More recently, in 2014, AT Kearney found that 95% to 99% of enterprises worldwide belonged in the SME category and that these modest-scale firms created 60% to 70% of new jobs in OECD nations.
I
In the GCC the story is, by now, familiar. The UAE government tells us that current non-oil GDP contribution by the small-business segment is more than 60% and that is expected to grow to 70% by 2021. Indeed, AT Kearney’s research concludes that GCC SMEs in particular are “poised to be globally competitive” and take on larger-scale adversaries.
TECHNOLOGY, THE GREAT ENABLER The reason for this emerging SME competitiveness is, put simply, technology. According to a 2014 Microsoft survey of global SMEs, 62% of companies said employees use phones or tablets to check and send email, up from 39% in 2010. Almost half of the companies polled (47%) considered cloud and mobile vital to their future. Some 45% believed use of these technologies led to a more productive workforce and 44% reported more satisfied customers as a direct result of their adoption. Most significantly, as a means to explain AT Kearney’s predicted SME competitiveness, the survey found that 85% of companies employed staff in different cities, up from 63% in 2010. How times have changed from the days of peer-to-peer networking. Cloud; mobile; unified-communications platforms; cost efficient, high-bandwidth Internet connections; and a millennial workforce that wears these new technologies close to the skin, have all conspired to make businesses of all scales more agile. Millennials want to work from home
and small businesses need millennials. A technology-savvy team reduces the time-to-market for new concepts and also makes cross-skilling collaboration – vital to SMEs – easier to accomplish. A mere 15 years ago, a meeting to discuss the progress of a proposal, for example, required the physical presence of all stakeholders. Today, with the arrival of tools like Windows 10 and Office 365, attendees can be anywhere. Collaboration tools in Office allow the real-time editing of the same document by anyone, wherever they are, and session edits are saved seamlessly across all devices.
HITTING THE GROUND RUNNING Windows 10 was built for SMEs, to alleviate the admin burden carried by the IT function and allow technical staff to spend more time innovating. The OS was designed to be self-teaching and improvements in artificial intelligence have been harnessed to provide users with assistance from Office 365 features such as “Tell Me” and integrated Web search “Smart Lookup”. All are designed to help the user hit the ground running and preclude the need for costly training sessions. Also gone are the days when big data was too big for small business. Traditionally SMEs have baulked at the perceived costs of maintaining servers, hiring data scientists and committing to complex analytics suites. With Microsoft’s cloud-based Power BI, smaller-scale enterprises can visualise and analyse information from sources as diverse as Dynamics CRM, Excel, and a host of third-party accounting and analytics tools. For example, an SME e-retailer becomes considerably more competitive if its management team can launch flash sales based on a cross-examination of customer demographics, online traffic trends and past campaign performance, all in a single dashboard view.
storage. The platform is also constructed to scale with a business, through ondemand resourcing. By now arguments for cloud migration are common: the switch from a large upfront payment to a subscriptionbased model for the entire IT business function; ease of scaling; agility, flexible payment model, and many others. These form an especially compelling proposal for smaller firms that need to manage cash flow more predictably. There is also some evidence that the arguments are taking hold. A 2015 BetterCloud report, covering 1,500 IT professional from 53 countries, suggests that by 2022, 62% of companies will host all of their IT operations in the cloud. The study also claims this migration is happening faster among SMEs. As technology companies recognise the increasing global dominance of the SME category, software tools will inevitably be tailored more and more towards these types of enterprise. And as SMEs embrace smarter application suites that cater to their scale and agility needs, those smaller businesses will pose a greater challenge to their larger competitors. Microsoft shall continue to be at the forefront of this shift, offering companies of all sizes the capability to enhance productivity through simpler and more cost-effective tools.
CLOUD COVER All of this is tied together by Microsoft’s cloud application platform Azure, which, for SMEs, takes the sting out of a host of services, from virtualisation and website hosting, to software development projects and data

DIGITIZATION
ver the past 50 years, Internet technology has rapidly and profoundly changed the way people work, live, play and learn. Today’s pace of technology change is akin to a vortex, relentlessly and chaotically sweeping everything into its spiral path, demanding digitization. As with a real vortex, the force of this change is too strong to ignore, and anything that fails to adapt, such as outdated business models, will break apart and fall away.
O
According to Gartner, by 2020, 75% of businesses globally will be a digital business or will be preparing to become one. While many organizations have digital business transformation initiatives planned or underway, Gartner predicts that only 30% of these efforts will be successful due to lack of talent and technical expertise. Digital disruption in the Middle East has the potential to reshape markets faster than perhaps any force in history. Countries and organizations that do not drive their own digital business transformation will be left behind. Those that do will be pulled toward a ‘digital center’ in which business models, offerings, and value chains are digitized, driving new revenue streams and substantive business outcomes. As digitization accelerates in the Middle East, cutting edge infrastructure will increase a country’s GDP, reduce spending and create jobs. It will allow governments to extend the reach and impact of public services by converting insights into action. It will enable new and diverse groups of entrepreneurs to build businesses that will shape the world, whilst providing more accessibility and opportunities for education and technology-based careers. As a result, it will ensure that countries become more competitive on the global stage. Having the right digital ecosystem in place will be a necessity to achieve any of these things. As we move into an era of complete digitization, where technology begins to connect everything from people, processes and data to things an era which we call the Internet of Things (IoT) or Internet of Everything (IoE) – Middle East Countries and organizations will
need to rethink how they approach their infrastructure on a grand scale. At its core, Country Digitization is the process of planning, and ultimately building, a sophisticated and forward-thinking IT network ecosystem that will allow for greater connectivity, productivity and security to drive this positive impact. The benefits of digitization and connectivity are enormous – greater efficiency and economy, better end-user experiences, greater usage of assets and clearer views of the business. In the Middle East for example: t )FBMUIDBSF XJMM CF JNQSPWFE CZ connecting rural patients with chronic diseases to doctors, utilising collaborative technology without ever having to leave their homes. t &EVDBUJPO DBO CF EFMJWFSFE UP TPNF of the most rural and underserved communities using collaborative technology solutions that will connect pupils and academicians in different cities around the globe. t $JUZ 8J 'J XJMM FOBCMF USBGGJD DPOHFTUJPO management and automated water metering resulting in greener and more efficient city infrastructure management. Likewise Smart parking will help citizens find open parking spaces via smartphone app. t 4NBSU XBTUF TFOTPST JOTUBMMFE JO waste containers will signal when they become full or are emitting odours above a set threshold for optimized pickup routes. t 1VCMJD TBGFUZ BOE TFDVSJUZ XJMM CF improved as City Wi-Fi solution improves

We believe that digitalization in the IoT/ IoE era will have a much greater impact on the world than the Internet did in its first 20 years. We think the possibilities of the IoE are limited only by imagination, and it will prove to be the most significant technological revolution in history.

MOBILITY TREND
y 2019, the combined Middle East, Africa and Turkey are expected to reach the USD 180 billion mark for spending on mobile devices, software, and related services. This accelerated growth originates from an increased industry demand for entreprise mobility services and the changing trends in the region’s consumer technology services. In many emerging markets, mobile was the first screen for consumer internet access. Industry analysis has shown that in the Middle East and Africa (MENA), more than nine out of 10 web users go online via their mobile phones. This year, over 94% of MENA internet users will go online via mobile phones at least once per month - a figure which is up slightly from an earlier penetration rate of 92.7%, and already by far the highest
B
in the world. The current worldwide average for mobile internet users is 79.1%, and it will not be until 2017 when worldwide penetration rates reach 90% and above. The above figures for the region’s mobile penetration show few distinct trends. With over two thirds of young MENA adults now owning smartphones, it has become a distracted society. Smartphones have become embedded in our lives - over half of owners regularly access their devices in work, while shopping or while travelling. The younger a consumer and the faster their network, the more likely they are to consult their phone during their day. It’s believed that, as a whole, global smartphone users check their screens over a billion times per day. We are in the midst of a global transformation, with more and more people moving from the offline, disconnected world to being constantly connected. The ways in which we interact, entertain, educate and shop have changed - worldwide consumer adoption of smartphone technology is happening at an astounding pace, opening up further opportunities to engage in new ways. That pace is expected to continue, with an estimated 50 billion connected devices by 2020. As pioneers in the telecoms industry, it is up to us to explore new opportunities and challenges for the mobile sector, whether that is through retail, government services, e-commerce, or beyond. As we consider the potential of this fast-moving new age, our focus is on creating richer experiences for consumers, supporting the ever-growing demand for mobile services and feasibility. If you think about a world where everything and everyone is connected, from mobile phone to a smart-home where even your washing machine is connected, it is critical for brands to deliver a consistent omni-channel experience, in-store, inapp, and online. We believe in better, richer experiences for each consumer, built around security, personalization, rewards and exclusive access. Sky Digital Platform, our ground-breaking cloud platform, is a first in the region. It offers consumers an effortless and flexible solution for interacting with a vast range of services, retail and travel, for example.
Our initiatives will positively impact the way that users manage their lives whether it’s for work, admin or leisure. Using the analytics we gather for every user, our platform experience is tailored to each consumers’ exact needs. In this new digital age, we know that retailers need to go beyond traditional mobile engagement. They must expand their understanding of shoppers’ mobile usage preferences and their experiences through apps. Regionally, we are seeing an increasing number of retailers implementing mobile engagement solutions to provide richer, more holistic experiences for shoppers. Some forward-thinking retailers have gone far beyond the traditional uses for location-based mobile apps and pushing location-based coupons to customers, by integrating location based services with other existing systems, such as pricing data, inventory management, labour management and improved customer loyalty programs. These mobility services open up a great potential for innovating the business model clubbed with richer experience, analytics, engagements, and value added service under one platform causing a disruption to the current model of customer acquisition and engagements.

WRISTBANDS ARE GOING BEYOND FITNESS. THEY WILL NOT ONLY COMPETE WITH SMART WATCHES BUT ALSO ALLOW MOBILE PAYMENTS, ACCESS, SAFETY, WELLNESS AND HEALTH. artner, Inc. forecasts that 274.6 million wearable electronic devices will be sold worldwide in 2016, an increase of 18.4 percent from 232.0 million units in 2015 (see Table 1). Sales of wearable electronic devices will generate revenue of $28.7 billion in 2016. Of that, $11.5 billion will be from smartwatches. "From 2015 through 2017, smartwatch adoption will have 48 percent growth largely due to Apple popularizing wearables as a lifestyle trend. Smartwatches have the greatest revenue potential among all wearables through 2019, reaching $17.5 billion," said Angela McIntyre, research director at Gartner. "Though the sales of smartwatches are the one of the strongest types of wearables, their adoption will remain much below sales
G
of smartphones. For example, in 2016 more than 374 million smartphones will sell in mature market countries and in large urban areas of emerging market countries, for example, in Hong Kong and Singapore." Fitness wearables — which include wristbands, smart garments, chest straps, sports watches and other fitness monitors — continue to increase in popularity, driven in some part by U.S. wellness programs. "Of all the fitness wearables, sports watches will be the one product category to maintain its average retail price over the next several years," said Ms. McIntyre. "Race runners, cyclists and divers will choose sports watches over smartwatches because the user interface, capabilities and durability are tailored to the needs of an athlete
in their sport. Continued advances in sensors and analytics for sports watches will bring new capabilities that bolster average retail prices." Although the size of the worldwide wristband market was on par with the unit sales of smartwatches in 2015, looking forward smartwatches will have stronger appeal with consumers as they typically have more multifunctional devices that can track exercise. Wristband providers are experimenting with how to compete with smartwatches and take market share from the market leader, Fitbit. Examples of emerging value propositions for wristbands beyond fitness include mobile payments, access, safety, wellness and health.
