02. Who will you contact?
Students
fellow students who i have given feedback to my self
What will you ask? What do you need to find out? In what area of design practice do you think Delroy should be represented through?
When will you approach them?
Where wil you approach them?
through out the project
university and outside of university
They can give me some interesting feedback in a design area that they know about or have further idea
Consider what they have said and try to incorporate it into my work in as many ways as possible
In your profession, how do you go about creating narrative within a documentary?
In the early stages of the project
via email
Obviously they work in this design area and may have a lot of knowledge to share
Figure out how their advice can be used in your project
Mobile phone and facebook
Have you met Delroy? What do you think of him?
through out the project
my house and thier house
Friends are able to be truthful and give you realistic feedback on what they think you should do
Consider what they have said and try to incorporate it into my work in as many ways as possible
Going to university to meet up with tutors
What skills do I need in order to make a documentary? How would you go about starting the documentary?
In the early stages of the project
university
Tutors are very good at pushing a design area that you may not of though of in context to your chosen idea.
Consider what they have said and try to incorporate it into my work in as many ways as possible

I will contact them via email. As is it is the quickest way to contact professionals

Delroy.
Above is a photo of Delroy. He is a character that I came across in my local area of Tufnell park. Over the years I have always seen him singing along with his guitar, whatever the weather. He loves singing pretty much the same song every time, which is no woman no cry by Bob Marley. But he gets people singing along and I found this very interesting as a character. I decided to make this project about him. I will choose an area of design practice to go into using feedback from other people. But first I need to show Delroy as a character and find out what media to experiment with, using the technique of community of practice.

My decision for the next stage. The text below will help to explain my decision to the next stage I will now experiment in three chosen areas of design practice. The three I have chosen are being selected because of the percentage indicated on the info graphics. Image making, photography and video are the three I will work in for the next stage.

On the right Is an infographic diagram on the feedback I got. It shows the different outcomes that people suggested for me to do with the character Delroy. I contacted a number of people to see what they thought would be the most interesting outcome from their perspective. As you can see, film and documentary was the most popular. The reason for this, is because it is an outcome that would be the most informative. I was very interested to see what other people would suggest. Symbols and type was another area of design practice that I was very interested in and started to carry out. But does this element help to explain Delroy’s persona and character? Photography was another interesting area of design practice that can help to explain the profile of Delroy.
Commnication within Community of practice
PROJECT 3 PROTOTYPE
Community of Practice involves me communicating in different ways inorder to get feedback
“Delroy seems like a very interesting character. I see you have already filmed him getting up to stuff. it would be amazing to see a short film documentary of him doing what he does best! singin and playing guitar!”
“I think in terms of what area of practice to represent delroy best, reaistically film. becuase you can hear what he plays, says and does all in one media”
“You should think about the people he meets, and the relationship between him the who ever he comes across. that is the magic of a character like him”

“Have you thought about the objects that he posseses? his guitar, his hat and cassette player? It seems to me like a lot of the object he has represent him as a person. maybe a series of symbols that you have designed?”

On the right are a series of images showing the different types of areas of practice. Through out this year we have been researching and carrying out these areas of practice to help us understand the ways in which to use graphic design. Project 3 involves us identifiying an area to go into and finding a community of practice with in it. This involves a lot of feedback from students, staff and who ever else you can contact within that industry. Film is an area that I feel I have not submersed my self into. I feel that as an area of practice film could be the most beneficial as I would learn new skills.
In order from left to right the circles represent the different areas of design practice; Film making, Communication environments, image making, Type design and interactive media. I am in favor of filmmaking as it is will enable me to learn more skills in editing, shooting and so on.
Working in film involves a lot of planning and coordination. I have to figure out when to film, what to film, how to film and where to film. A lot of this information can be answered through a community of practice. Which involves other people communicating with me and allowing me to identify the four key elements of filming.

DELROY
-Flexibility to deal with production delays, unexpected problems and varied personality types -Willingness to work long hours on rush assignments -A commitment to highquality work and to continuing to improve your own skills and knowledge -A personal code of ethics and commitment to following the director’s vision rather than altering material to make a personal artistic statement - Communication skills
I will need to enhance all the skills listed in the text on the left in order for me to produce film that is successfully edited and finished. If I do not gain most of these skills I will fail my aim in this project. “To produce a body of work which places emphasis on craft, skills development and production aligned to this chosen area”.
-Knowledge of editing equipment and a willingness to keep up with changes in that technology -A good photographic eye for camera angles and special effects, as well as knowledge of audio effects -Ability to work alone on detailed and sometimes tedious work -Problem-solving skills to make film sequences work well or to work with the available footage -Strong interpersonal skills to work well with directors, cinematographers, sound editors, special effects editors and music producers Spike Taylor-Manson LCC UAL

PROJECT 3 2013 DELROY

Channel 4 is a British public-service television broadcaster which began transmission on 2 November 1982. Although largely commercially self-funded, it is ultimately publicly owned; originally a subsidiary of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA), the station is now owned and operated by Channel Four Television Corporation. Channel four documentaries are watched nationally on a regular bases. They have managed to get the public extremely interested in some of the most amazing and abstract stories the UK has ever seen. There are a number of other corporations and companies on the left, such as the BFI, Fim four, BBC and HBO. They all play very important roles in nationally and internationally showing documentary film and media. But despite this I feel that Channel 4 and Vice are the two I can relate to and can find most influence, due to the fact that I find their documentaries a lot more interesting.
Spike Taylor-Manson LCC UAL
On the left are a series existing companies that specialize in international documentary film. “Vice’s content has shifted from dealing mostly with independent arts and pop cultural matters to covering more serious news topics. Vice has championed the “Immersionist” school of journalism, which it regards as something of a DIY antithesis to the big-office methods practiced by traditional news outlets, and has published an entire issue composed of articles written in this manner. There have also been issues of the magazine wholly dedicated to concerns facing Iraqi people, Native Americans, Russian people, people with mental disorders, and people with mental disabilities. Vice also publishes an annual guide for students in the UK.” Vice has been exceptionally popular with people my age and culture. They manage to combine cool hip young people alongside the hugely important issues raised globally. A lot of their documentaries will be good to view and take notes from.

PROJECT 3 PROTOTYPE
DELROY
Above is the finished documentary. I feel the outcome has some of best elements combined to show the persona and character of Delroy. I feel like the other areas of design practice would not be able to explain Delroy in the best way possible. Further more, This project gave me time to learn a new set of skills such as; editing on final cut pro, filming in the public, using lighting to film, communicating and building a relationship with someone. I feel a lot more confident about making another documentary.
