Some of the programs listed in this guide are open to girls only, with council staff or volunteers providing the necessary supervision. Other programs require that adults register and attend with girls. For those programs, marked with the Supervision Required symbol ( ) and noted in the program description, adults must register for the program (and be a current Girl Scout member) and attend with girls using the recommended volunteer-to-girl ratios below.

EVENTS, TRAVEL, CAMP

GROUP MEETINGS

Volunteer-to-girl ratios show the minimum number of volunteers needed to supervise a specific number of girls and ensure their safety and health. Your group must have at least two unrelated, approved volunteers present at all times, plus additional volunteers as necessary for the group’s size. Any adult who supervises girls must be at least 18 years old, a registered Girl Scout member, and background screened before volunteering. One troop co-leader in every group must be female. The Girl Scout Difference We all know the Girl Scout mission: building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. But how exactly does that happen? Our success comes from focusing on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Every Girl Scout activity, program, and award teaches girls to thrive in five key areas, providing the skills needed to succeed in school and in life! Girl Scouts are more likely than non-Girl Scouts to*: • Work collaboratively with others on group projects (86% vs. 61%) • Engage in hands-on activities and reflect on what worked/didn’t work (81% vs. 59%) • Take an active role in decision-making (80% vs. 51%)

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) Five Outcomes SENSE OF SELF Girls have confidence in themselves and their abilities, and form positive identities.

POSITIVE VALUES Girls act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show concern for others.

CHALLENGE SEEKING Girls learn to take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from mistakes.

COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVING Girls desire to contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the community, and create “action plans” to solve them.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by resolving conflicts constructively and communicating their feelings directly.

*Methodology: An online survey was conducted by the research firm Decision Analyst and consisted of 3014 girls (1507 Girl Scouts, 1507 non-Girl Scouts) aged 5-18. Quotas were set by age, race/ethnicity, region, and family income to achieve a nationally representative sample. For more information, contact gsresearch@girlscouts.org and look for more statistics from this survey throughout this book.

World Thinking Day Saturday, February 22, 2020

Did you know you have Girl Scout sisters in more than 140 countries around the world? Join us to celebrate each other, to learn about our world, and to explore and take action around a common theme. Participants are asked to choose and research a country, then prepare a colorful, interactive display to teach others about their chosen country.

Step 1 Choose a country you want to learn about. Reserve your chosen country and get further information by emailing MemberSupport@girlscoutsnebraska.org.

Step 2 Research the country. Find out what it would be like to be a girl growing up there.

Step 3 Create a colorful display and develop a fun, interactive activity to teach the other participants about your chosen country. Some suggestions are: • Teach how to count to 10 in the country’s language. • Perform a dance, play an instrument, teach a game, or make a craft unique to the country. • Prepare and offer small samples of a food the country is known for (no nuts, please). • Provide clothing samples, such as kimonos or sombreros to try on. New to World Thinking Day? Daisies and new troops are invited to attend without researching a country and presenting an activity. Once you experience World Thinking Day, we’re confident you’ll be inspired to return next year representing a country!

Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska has developed five programs that can be facilitated by adult volunteers at a time and place that is convenient for Girl Scouts and their friends! These inexpensive programs can be ordered in advance from the council and customized for your troop, group, or service unit.

NEW! OUR EARTH, OUR FUTURE Take a hike! Yes, really…take a hike to appreciate the world around you and discover ways to make the earth a better place for future generations. Make a bee hotel, leave a fun snack for birds, and make a poster to promote conservation and our Girl Scout ways.

NEW! TRASH TO TREASURE It’s time to see your trash in an entirely new way and use resources wisely. Start collecting items now to use with this program: a soup can, toilet paper roll, and a milk carton – to name a few! Give them upgrades as a bird feeder, a bracelet, and a pencil holder.

NEW! THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT Learn cool space facts, make your own glittery moon rocks, and learn to identify constellations in the night sky! Plus, out-of-this-world information about each planet will be at your fingertips after you create a solar system fact fan!

FRESH BAKED: IDEAS FOR COOKIE SUCCESS Get inspired for the best Girl Scout Cookie Program ever! Touch on the five cookie skills while exploring your creative side. Bling your booth, bling yourself, and get ready to shine! Make cool banners, SWAPS, and a cookie scarf to keep you warm.

UNICORN CRAFTS AND RAINBOW DREAMS Lose yourself in a world of unicorns, rainbows, and colorful fun! Unicorns will come to life in activities that test your senses and make you sparkle from within. Make a unicorn horn you can eat and a wish necklace that you can wear forever! Let the magic take you away.

EACH POD KIT INCLUDES:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Girl Scout Girl Awards Bronze. Silver. Gold. These represent the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn. All three awards give you the chance to do big things while working on an issue you care about. Whether you want to plant a community garden at your school and inspire others to eat healthily for your Bronze, advocate for animal rights for your Silver, or build a career network that encourages girls to become scientists and engineers for your Gold, you’ll inspire others (and yourself).

Girl Scout Bronze Award  Grades 4-5 (Juniors) The Bronze Award is a leadership adventure and the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. As you and your team plan and complete your project, you’ll develop more confidence, meet new people, and have the kind of fun that happens when you work together to make a difference.

Girl Scout Silver Award  Grades 6-8 (Cadettes) Have you ever looked around your neighborhood or school and wondered how you could make a change for the better? Earning the Silver Award – the highest honor for Cadettes – gives you the chance to show that you are a leader who is organized, determined, and dedicated.

Girl Scout Gold Award  Grades 9-12 (Seniors and Ambassadors) Using your passion and talents you can Go Gold and earn the highest honor in Girl Scouting. Open only to girls in high school, this prestigious award challenges you to address a community problem and create a sustainable solution! The Gold Award is viewed by admissions counselors with great regard; you will be eligible for additional college scholarships; and every young woman who earns Gold is eligible to move up one rank in the military.

Pat Meyer Nebraska Gold Award Girl Scout of Distinction Award We invite girls who earn their Gold Award to apply for the Pat Meyer Nebraska Gold Award Girl Scout of Distinction recognition. At least three applicants will be chosen, and each will receive a plaque, a college scholarship, and a lifetime Girl Scout membership, all provided by Pat Meyer’s family in her honor. The council then nominates those who receive this recognition for Girl Scouts of the USA’s National Gold Award Girl Scout of Distinction award. If selected, honorees receive a $5,000 academic scholarship sponsored by the Kappa Delta Foundation. For more information, contact MemberSupport@girlscoutsnebraska.org.

Girl Award Ceremonies Girl Award Ceremonies, recognizing recipients of the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award, are held each year in May and June. Ceremony details will be listed in the Girl’s Guide to Summer Fun and on our website.

Want to Earn a Girl Award? Thinking about earning Gold, Silver, or Bronze? Submit a Girl Award Intent Form, found on our website (under What Girl Scouts Do > Highest Awards), at the beginning of your process. This enables us to provide encouragement, support, and share important information regarding your Take Action project.

Go Gold with a Gold Award Workshop! Journeys complete? Are you ready to begin the Gold Award process? Attend a Gold Award Workshop on October 26 or 27 and get started! TAKE ACTION GIRL AWARD PROJECT IDEAS If you are looking for a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Award Take Action project idea, try Community Mapping. It highlights a community’s resources and needs. As you explore your community, you might discover something that you find concerning and that could be the inspiration for a great Take Action project. Learn more about Community Mapping in the following Girl Scout Journey books: GIRLtopia: pages 90–93; BREATHE: pages 58–60; Agent of Change: pages 70–77. Another way to brainstorm project ideas is to start conversations! Maybe a friend or family member has a health concern? Maybe they have seen or experienced something that made an impact in their lives? Does hearing their story inspire you to take action? For more inspiration, visit GirlScouts.org/mapit. This map highlights projects completed by Girl Scouts from all around the world.

VOLUNTEERS Ready to change the world?

No matter how much time you have to give to Girl Scouts, you can make an impact. Whether you are interested in being a co-leader, adult support, cookie mom (or dad), trainer, mentor or friend, we will find a role that suits your skills and interests.

Are you interested in volunteering, but not in a troop role? Volunteering with your local Service Unit may be for you! Our Service Units have positions that impact our girls, but you do not work directly with them. We always need new ideas to help grow Girl Scouting across the state! Work with other adults to provide a better experience for the girls - help plan an event in your area, recruit girls at your local schools, or keep track of finances. To volunteer in Girl Scouts you do not have to make a long-term commitment. It could be for one event, one meeting or it can be for a year in one of the Service Unit positions. Help us grow Girl Scouts in your area by volunteering.

Girl Scout Organization and Our Volunteers To help us manage over 21,000 members each year, our council is split into 84 Service Units. Service Units and the volunteers who make up the Service Unit Team play an important role in delivering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) throughout our state. Troops and members are organized into their Service Unit by their county and ZIP code.

Service Unit Structure NATIONAL ORGANIZATION Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) is national organization supporting local councils. LOCAL COUNCILS Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska (GSSN) is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit that fundraises to manage the operations of programs, camps, and other council-led activities in a 92-county region of Nebraska and Carter Lake, Iowa. Volunteer Training and Resources Volunteer Toolkit (VTK) Try the Volunteer Toolkit! It’s a digital planning tool that helps you make the most of every troop meeting, saving you time and helping you plan. For all Girl Scout grade levels, the VTK includes meeting plans that are created with step-by-step instructions for each meeting activity. This means you get a full year of Girl Scouts right on your device! Want to do your own thing? You can! Each meeting plan is fully customizable.

VTK Tips 1. Use the VTK to Best Fit Your Needs: There are plenty of resources and functions in the VTK, but not every troop will use every resource or function available. And that’s ok! Use it for what you need. 2. Register for Council Activities: Register girls for council activities by clicking “Add Activity” in the Year plan tab! You’ll be sent to our program registration site to finish your registration. 3. Exclusive Content: The newest Journeys (Think Like an Engineer, Think Like a Citizen Scientist, Think Like a Programmer, and Outdoor) are found exclusively on the VTK. 4. Organize Your Troop Roster: You can find troop rosters and parent/guardian contact info for each girl in the My Troop Tab. Here you can also renew girl and troop volunteer memberships. 5. Get Parents Involved: Encourage parents to stay engaged with their girls’ Girl Scout experience by getting on the VTK to view the year plan and meeting agendas. Also, send customizable, pre-populated emails to parents to share the year plan, remind them of upcoming meetings and other important information. 6. Get Girls Outside: Tree icons next to agenda items in the Meeting Plan tab turn that activity into an outdoor experience.

Every day, Girl Scout volunteers help girls blossom into their true potential by providing experiences that allow them to pursue their interests, passions, causes and the leadership roles into which they can grow. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, girls are standing up, standing out and standing tall! Thank your awesome volunteer! Here are some ways to show your gratitude: • Explore the meaning of appreciation and giving back by completing the Attitude of Gratitude Patch Program and earn a free patch (while supplies last). • Let your voice be heard and vote during the month of August for the Best of Girl Scouting Awards. There are eleven categories for you to vote for that special co-leader, troop, cookie person, etc. • What better way to say thank you than to nominate a troop volunteer for one of our council Volunteer Awards (see list of awards on our website). Nominations are accepted through December 15th.

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteer Appreciation

• Celebrate your favorite Girl Scout Volunteer by sending a straight-from the heart, personalized eCard. • A hug, high five or a fist bump with a thank you goes a long way telling how you appreciate them. • Plant a tree in their honor for a lasting sign of appreciation. • Treat that special volunteer to lunch and tell her how much she means to you. All the above plus more ways to thank your volunteer can be found at GirlScoutsNebraska.org under Volunteer Resources > Volunteer Appreciation.

Volunteer Awards The formal way to visibly recognize volunteers and community partners for outstanding contributions that have made a significant impact on girls and our council. Awards include Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska specific awards and Girl Scouts of the USA national awards. Nominations are open through December 15 of each membership year.

Visit our website at GirlScoutsNebraska.org to view a list of community outreach sites, including:

• Columbus • Kearney • North Platte • Schuyler • Fremont • Lexington • Omaha • Scottsbluff • Grand Island • Lincoln • Ogallala For more information about the community outreach program, volunteering, or offering monetary support, please contact MemberSupport@girlscoutsnebraska.org.
