Girl Scout Promise

On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be: honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to: respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Benefits of Girl Scouts

What You’ll Do in Girl Scouts

Try new things. Make new friends. Learn a new skill. Go on more adventures than you can count. There’s a whole world of opportunities waiting for you when you become a Girl Scout! In Girl Scouting, girls enjoy the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. Through enriching experiences and activities, girls discover their values, connect with those who share their vision, and take action to make the world a better place.

The Girl Scout Difference

We all know the Girl Scout mission: building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. But how exactly does that happen? Our success comes from focusing on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE). The GSLE is designed to help girls everywhere develop as leaders and build confidence by learning new skills. It also ensures that Girl Scouts at every level are sharing a powerful, national experience—girls together changing the world!

Four Pillars of the GSLE

Everything in Girl Scouts centers around our four pillars, designed to meet her where she is now and to grow along with her. Whether she’s building a robotic arm, coding her first app, packing for her first hike, or advocating for change in her community, a Girl Scout has an exciting array of choices to suit her interests at every age:

Five Outcomes of the GSLE

When girls participate in Girl Scouts, they thrive in five key ways:

1. Strong Sense of Self

2. Positive Values

3. Challenge Seeking

4. Healthy Relationships

5. Community Problem Solving

While each of our programs incorporate the GSLE and help girls achieve these outcomes, we’ve marked a few programs as examples throughout this publication beginning on page 14.

Program Supervision

Some of the programs listed in this guide are open to girls only, with Council staff or volunteers providing the necessary supervision. Other programs require adults to register and attend with girls (marked with the Supervision Required symbol and noted in the program description). For those programs, adults must be a current member, register for the program, and attend with girls using the below ratios:

MEETINGS

EVENTS, TRAVEL, CAMP

VOLUNTEER-TO-GIRL RATIOS

Two unrelated volunteers (at least one of whom is female) for this number of girls:

Plus one additional volunteer for each additional number of this many girls:

Two unrelated volunteers (at least one of whom is female) for this number of girls: 6

Plus one additional volunteer for each additional number of this many girls:

Volunteer-to-Girl Ratios show the minimum number of volunteers needed to supervise a specific number of girls to ensure their health and safety. Your group must have at least two unrelated, approved volunteers present at all times, plus additional volunteers as necessary for the group’s size. Any adult who supervises girls must be at least 18 years old, a registered Girl Scout member, and successfully complete a background screen before volunteering. One troop co-leader in every group must be female.

For safety guidelines for specific Girl Scout activities, visit bit.ly/GSSNsafe or search “Safety Activity Checkpoints” on our website.

Around the globe, organizations and individuals will join forces for World Cleanup Day (and National Cleanup Day) on or around Saturday, September 20*, to beautify our parks, trails, beaches, mountains, and open spaces. Now, imagine if EVERY Girl Scout across Nebraska and the nation participated in World Cleanup Day. What an incredible impact we would make!

Beginning August 1, take the pledge to gather family, friends, and fellow Girl Scouts, and visit a park, lake, or any public area in your community to clean up litter and make the world a better place. Then after you’re done, submit an Impact Report to let us know what you accomplished. Pledge Forms and Impact Reports will be available on our website by August 1.

*Or choose another day in September, but no later than September 30.

Adult supervision is required.

Girls throughout the U.S. and around the world unite to observe the founding of Girl Scouts. The first Girl Scout meeting was held March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, when 18 girls became the very first members. Since then, Girl Scouts has grown to over four million members worldwide. Travel Progression Information

Through progression, Girl Scouts build skills to become lifelong travelers and global citizens. Girl Scouts take the lead in planning a new adventure at every level. Progression allows girls to learn the skills they need to become competent travelers, including how to plan and budget future trips.

Girls should have experience at every level of the progression before moving up. For regional trips, girls must be Juniors or older. For national or international trips, girls must be Cadettes or older (except for council-sponsored “supervision-required” trips).

When moving up to the next step, consider each Girl Scouts’ independence, ability to work well in groups, flexibility, and experience with cultures other than their own. For more progression information, visit bit.ly/GSSNtravel.
