2023 Annual Report

The Lasting Impact of Girl Scouts

The Girl Scouts mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts have been making the world a better place for 112 years. Whether it is planting a community garden, donating supplies to a local animal shelter, thanking first responders, or completing a Bronze, Silver, or Gold Award project, we honor the incredible community spirit and impact of Girl Scouts. This past year, our membership grew to 16,604, marking the second year of growth and a return to our pre-pandemic membership level. We provided high quality programs and camps to more than 20,000 participants and extended access to Girl Scouts to 3,740 members through school and community-based partnerships. There is a growing body of research showing that today’s girls are struggling. Social isolation, bullying, physical violence, and negative impacts of social media are taking a toll on mental health. According to the CDC, 57% of teen girls feel sad or hopeless and nearly 1 in 3 have seriously considered attempting suicide. In addition to more access to mental health resources, girls need safe spaces and positive relationships to explore who they are and who they want to be.

Spirit of Nebraska Girl Scouts tell us that they feel safe, they can be themselves, and because of Girl Scouts they know they can make a difference in the world. Girl Scouts provides a lasting impact and recent alum research indicates the longer a Girl Scout participates, the greater the benefit to their education, career, community involvement and civic action in adulthood.

Thank you to all our volunteers, donors, and supporters. Together, we are taking significant steps toward our vision of being the preeminent leadership development organization for girls that provides an inclusive and nurturing environment to empower all girls to achieve their dreams.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Girl Scouts and the Tradition of Giving Back

Embracing the rich tradition of giving, Girl Scouts have a legacy of lending a hand to communities, countries, and the world for over 112 years. In 2023, Spirit of Nebraska amplified our commitment to this tradition, empowering girls to discover new avenues for making a meaningful impact through giving back.

World Cleanup Day

For one day, more than 4,000 Girl Scouts, family members, and community members took the pledge to beautify the outdoors in their communities by picking up litter and raising awareness of the global waste crisis. From parks and schools to roads and lakes, it seemed no area was left unturned. Together, we collected 853 bags of trash!

Cupid Crew

Did you know over 15 million seniors in the U.S. live in isolation? Valentine’s Day can be especially challenging for those who are alone. On February 14, Nebraska Girl Scouts joined the #CupidCrew movement by creating cards, delivering roses, or engaging in conversation with the elderly in their community. Girl Scouts united to make aging purposeful for all, ensuring older Americans feel connected and loved.

Gold Award Girl Scouts

In 2023, we recognized 24 Girl Scouts who completed the pinnacle of Girl Scouting, The Gold Award. Exclusively for high school girls, the Gold Award challenges Girl Scouts to identify a community need and implement measurable, sustainable actions.

Sabrina Heckens and Ria Vootla took a stance to end hygiene poverty. Emily Borges, Aida Burks, Amelia Larson focused their efforts on the mental health of young people. Harleigh Claussen and Anne Cook implemented change for the elderly, just to name a few.

“Going Gold” fosters civic engagement, setting the foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship, and career direction. Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska acknowledges the commendable efforts of these young women, continuing a century-long tradition of leadership.

Girl Scouts is Possible for Every Girl

Girl Scouting embraces inclusivity, providing every girl the opportunity to experience lifelong, leadership building benefits, regardless of their financial situation. We invest significant resources to ensure all girls can become Girl Scout members. Our financial aid funds extend the hand of sisterhood to girls unable to afford the basic costs of membership fees, uniforms or books, and programs that ignite their confidence to change the world.

Our Community Outreach Program guarantees access for all girls to become Girl Scouts. Last year, 3,740 Girl Scout members benefited, earning an impressive 10,146 badges or patches statewide. Excitingly, more Outreach Girl Scouts registered for summer camps, with 356 attending camps in Omaha and Lincoln!

Camp Renaming

In a bid for a more inclusive camp experience, we initiated the Campsite Renaming Project. After inviting submissions from Girl Scouts across the state, Bumblebee Bunkhouses, Turkey Trot Trail, and Cedar Grove emerged as the winning names.

The Renaming Ceremony in October celebrated diversity, featuring indigenous food, camp explorations, and a commemorative patch. Cheers to a Girl Scout tradition evolving with inclusivity at its core.

Donor Impact

The DreamLab

In 2023, Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska embarked on opening a Girl Scout DreamLab in Omaha. A groundbreaking center, the DreamLab is designed to enhance the Girl Scout presence in communities and host one-of-a-kind programming for children, families, and Girl Scouts. Our $1 million Capital Campaign, supported by Board Members, donors, and the community, has seen remarkable progress.

artVenture

On April 22, 2023, Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska hosted its 19th Annual artVenture Art Show and Auction. artVenture plays a vital role providing opportunities for girls across Nebraska to have an outlet for creative expression and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Eight hundred and ninety Girl Scouts participated in this fun and unique program raising $212,000 with support from 76 sponsors!

[glamp!]

[glamp!] returned for its second year at Camp Catron, drawing 39 participants and raising $40,000 with support from 24 sponsors. Attendees indulged in poolside cocktails, exhilarating ziplining, and archery, followed by a glamorous dinner and fireside s’mores—an extraordinary fusion of luxury, adventure, and community.
