Welcome to Your 24-25 Annual Program Book!

Dear Girl Scout Family,

As Girl Scouts, we get to try new things in a safe and supportive environment. Whether it is overcoming fears on a challenge course, learning CPR, or traveling to another country, Girl Scouts provides amazing opportunities to learn new skills and have incredible experiences. I love to hear Girl Scouts share their stories about fun times at camp, the skills they learned selling cookies, and the activities that sparked their interest in a career or new hobby.

Participating in a variety of activities is not only fun, but it also has an important impact on your well-being. Inside this program book is a little bit of everything and I encourage you to try something new. It is an investment in yourself that leads to unlimited possibilities.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Girl Scouts...It’s a Little Bit of Everything!

Girl Scout Mission

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Girl Scout Promise

On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be: honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to:

respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Benefits of Girl Scouts

What You'll Do in Girl Scouts

Try new things. Make new friends. Learn a new skill. Go on more adventures than you can count. There’s a whole world of opportunities waiting for you when you become a Girl Scout!

In Girl Scouting, girls enjoy the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. Through enriching experiences and activities, girls discover their values, connect with those who share their vision, and take action to make the world a better place.

The Girl Scout Difference

We all know the Girl Scout mission—building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. But how exactly does that happen? Our success comes from focusing on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE).

The GSLE is designed to help girls develop as leaders and build confidence by learning new skills. It also ensures that Girl Scouts at every level are sharing a powerful, national experience—girls together changing the world!

Four Pillars of the GSLE

Everything in Girl Scouts centers around our four pillars , designed to meet her where she is now and to grow along with her. Whether she’s building a robotic arm, coding her first app, packing for her first hike, or advocating for change in her community, a Girl Scout has an exciting array of choices to suit her interests at every age:

Life Skills Entrepreneurship

Five Outcomes of the GSLE

When girls participate in Girl Scouts, they thrive in five key ways:

1. Strong Sense of Self

2. Positive Values

3. Challenge Seeking

4. Healthy Relationships

5. Community Problem Solving

While each of our programs incorporate the GSLE and help girls achieve these outcomes, we’ve marked a few programs as examples throughout this publication. Learn more on page 7.

Five Ways Girl Scouts Builds Girl Leaders

Since 1912, girls have explored new fields of knowledge, learned valuable skills, and developed strong core values through Girl Scouts. Today Girl Scouts is, as it always has been, the organization best positioned to help girls develop important leadership skills they need to become successful adults.

At Girl Scouts, guided by supportive adults and peers, girls develop their leadership potential through ageappropriate activities that enable them to discover their values, skills, and the world around them; connect with others in a multicultural environment; and take action to make a difference in their world. These activities are designed to be girl-led, cooperative, and hands-on—processes that create high-quality experiences conducive to learning.

When girls participate in Girl Scouts, they benefit in five important ways...

1. STRONG SENSE OF SELF: Girls have confidence in themselves and their abilities, and form positive identities.

2. POSITIVE VALUES: Girls act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show concern for others.

3. CHALLENGE SEEKING: Girls take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from mistakes.

4. HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS: Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by communicating their feelings directly and resolving conflicts constructively.

5. COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVING: Girls desire to contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the community, and create “action plans” to solve them.

Why Do These Outcomes Matter?

When girls exhibit these attitudes and skills, they become responsible, productive, caring, and engaged citizens. But don’t take our word for it! Studies show that the development of attitudes, behaviors, and skills like confidence, conflict resolution, and problem solving are critical to well-being and rival academic and technical skills in their capacity to predict long-term positive life outcomes. Youth who develop these five outcomes…

• Are happier, healthier, and less likely to engage in problem behaviors or be victimized.

• Achieve more academically and feel more engaged in school.

• Become strong job applicants.

• Become successful, well-adjusted adults.

Troop or Individual?

Girl Scouting is for every girl! Whether you belong to a troop or venture solo as an individual member, there is a place for you in Girl Scouts. Either way, you can do all of the activities in this program book! Read on to see which is best for you!

There are two great ways to be a Girl Scout! How will you participate?

As a Troop Member...

y You will be part of a group that meets regularly and plans activities together.

y You will work together as a team to set goals, brainstorm ideas, complete service projects, earn Girl Scout awards, participate in programs (including the Girl Scout Cookie Program), and more!

y You will be guided by two or more Girl Scout-qualified volunteers, your activities will be girl-led, and you will develop leadership skills and friendships that will last a lifetime.

As an Individual Girl Member (IGM)...

y You will customize your Girl Scout experience with the support of the adult mentor of your choosing.

y You can mix and match your interests and participate in EVERY aspect of Girl Scouting, including special events, programs, service projects, travel opportunities, camp, and product programs like selling Girl Scout Cookies!

y With no troop meetings, you can arrange your Girl Scout activities around your busy schedule.

y You can earn recognitions and awards, including the Gold Award when you are a Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador!

GIRL SCORES CAREGIVER SCORES

26-35 POINTS

You're ready for new travel experiences! Prepare for your future Girl Scout travel experiences and improve your independence and confidence by attending one of our travel workshop (see page 47). Sign up for a council-sponsored trip with your troop/group or start making plans for a future Girl Scout independent-level travel opportunity.

15-25 POINTS

Try going on a short trip to a nearby city or state with your troop/group to help build your confidence and gain important travel skills for future travel experiences. Or try a council-sponsored trip as a parent/daughter pair (especially one that is not too far and not too many days away from home). You’ll be ready for bigger travel adventures soon!

36-45 POINTS

You're ready to be out and about, Girl Scout! Choose an independent-level council-sponsored trip (solo or with a buddy) or apply for a Girl Scout Destinations trip to travel with your Girl Scout sisters from all over the U.S.! You’re just steps away from skills that will lead you to future travel adventures like studying abroad during college!

15-25 POINTS

Encourage your girl to go on a troop/group trip or accompany her on a short council-sponsored trip. Be a role model and demonstrate flexibility when things don’t go as planned. Help her build important independent skills (like grooming, dressing appropriately, and keeping track of her own things, etc.) so that she will be ready for new travel adventures soon.

26-35 POINTS

Suggest she try a longer council-sponsored trip with her troop/group or with a friend. She may even be ready for an independent-level trip. Ask her what types of experiences she feels prepared for and let her know you believe she is ready. Have her participate in planning for her travel experience—and with your guidance—she’ll soon be ready.

36-45 POINTS

Look at the independent-level and the Girl Scout Destinations trips with your girl to help her choose one that fits her best. Let her lead the registration and application process with your guidance and support. She’ll know that you think she is capable and ready for new adventures around Nebraska, the United States, or internationally!

Girl Scout Girl Awards

Bronze. Silver. Gold. These represent the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn. All three awards give you the chance to do big things while working on an issue you care about. Whether you want to plant a community garden at your school and inspire others to eat healthy for your Bronze, advocate for animal rights for your Silver, or build a career network that encourages girls to become scientists and engineers for your Gold, you’ll inspire others (and yourself).

Girl Scout Bronze Award

GIRL SCOUT JUNIORS (GRADES 4-5)

The Bronze Award is a leadership adventure and the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. As you and your team plan and complete your project, you’ll develop more confidence, meet new people, and have the kind of fun that happens when working together makes a difference.

4. Create a plan

5. Present your plan and get feedback

Parents/Caregivers

“Many hands make light work” is as true in Girl Scouts as it is in life. It may be difficult for some to ask for help, and troop co-leaders are no exception, with many unsure how to make the ask.

Running a quality Girl Scout troop requires the involvement of ALL parents/caregivers. We encourage all parents/caregivers to connect with your girl's troop leadership for ways you and other adults in your family can offer support. Each of us has unique talents and we’re counting on YOU to share them with her troop!

These opportunities are ideal for older Girl Scouts to build leadership or presentation skills with adult guidance (Girl Scout Cadettes/Seniors may need to be accompanied by an adult). If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, please visit our blog at bit.ly/EpicVol (case sensitive) or reach out to Member Support at 402.558.8189 or MemberSupport@girlscoutsnebraska.org.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL HOST

REQUIREMENTS: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Back-to-School nights (open houses) are generally in August, one day per year. The majority of schools hold them indoors for one to two hours. You would attend, host a table, and may be asked general Girl Scout questions. The Council will provide Girl Scout give-away items and interest forms for prospective families to complete.

“YOU’RE INVITED” PARTY HOST

REQUIREMENTS: 3 | 4 | 6

You’re Invited parties are recruitment events for prospective girls and families to try Girl Scouts, often with a fun theme. These events are best conducted by a minimum of two volunteers: one leading girl activities and another answering Girl Scout questions for parents/caregivers. All girl activities, supplies, and talking points will be provided by the Council (we’re happy to talk you through an adult conversation for a practice run). The Council will also provide fliers if you are able to assist with submitting fliers into a school (we may only deliver to schools with staff/volunteers living in that area). These parties may be a one-time or ongoing opportunity tailored to your availability; scheduled for one hour and typically held evenings or weekends.

TRIP ADVISOR

REQUIREMENTS 5 | 6

Trip Advisors provide supervision and guidance for some of our older girl council-sponsored trips, encouraging each girl to develop independence and leadership skills.

OPPORTUNITY REQUIREMENTS KEY

1 = GS Cadette

2 = GS Senior

3 = GS Ambassador

TRANSPORTATION CHAPERONE

REQUIREMENTS: 5 | 6

4 = College Age and Up

5 = Adults 25–60

6 = Background Screen Required

Transportation is a participation barrier for some of our members. We are seeking volunteer chaperones in urban and rural communities for a seasonal commitment. We will match you with girls whose ages you are comfortable interacting with and transporting in your vehicle to and from Girl Scout programs. Chaperones must have a personal vehicle with current safety features, insurance, and driver's license.

SCHOOL TROOP SITE LEADER

REQUIREMENTS: 4 | 6

Girl Scouts is for every girl, however, some girls are only able to participate when it’s delivered after school. We are looking for caring adults who want to make this possible for girls in urban and rural communities. We will provide training, materials, lesson plans, and support for all things needed in this role. This is generally a once-per-week commitment for one school semester with the option for multiple semesters!

EVENT ASSISTANT

REQUIREMENTS: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Have fun sharing Girl Scouts with prospective girls and families as an Event Assistant. This is a fun and lowcommitment way to help spread the word about Girl Scouting on YOUR schedule. Our Recruitment team hosts a variety of events—some are one-time instances while others are bi-weekly for five weeks (such as startup troops). We would love for you to be a part of our Mission without requiring any prep work on your part!

GSAG CO-LEADERS

REQUIREMENTS 4 | 6

Help lead an area Girl Scout Advisory Group (GSAG) of older Girl Scouts who brainstorm program ideas, provide valuable feedback to our council, and keep us focused on what is relevant to girls today.

DEMO MEETING LEADER

REQUIREMENTS 2 | 3 | 4

Help troops that are just getting started by leading one meeting for Daisy or Brownie level troops. Training to be provided as well as all materials, scripts, and step-by-step instructions for the specific meeting.
