CREATIVE ARTS CONTEST

DESSERT - POUND CAKE

Contest Rules

• Definition: A type of cake traditionally made with a pound of each of four ingredients: flour, butter, eggs, and sugar. Pound cake first came about during the early 1700s. At that time, the average person was unable to read or write so recipes that could easily be spread by word of mouth tended to be the most popular. Over time, the classic recipe has undergone various adaptations and modifications. Most recipes don’t actually call for a pound each of eggs, flour, sugar and butter. Pound cakes are known for their rich flavor and heavy consistency. Side note: Look for pound cake recipes for a loaf pan (instead of a bundt pan).

• Complete recipe (listing all ingredients, amounts of ingredients used in the entry, directions for mixing, and/or baking guidelines) must be submitted with entry registration.

• Entry must be baked in and entered in a nondecorative disposable 2-pound loaf pan no larger than 8.5” x 4.5” x 2.5” with a plastic or paper foil lid.

• Pound cake may be entered either plain (without glaze), dusted with powdered sugar, or drizzled with a powdered sugar glaze.

• Variations of a pound cake may contain and not be limited to 7-Up, coconut, cream cheese, sour cream, fruit, fruit juices, chocolate, or seeded cake, such as poppy seeds. All cream types must be cooked into the product.

Glazes

• Glazes may be used for the top of the pound cake.

• Definition: A mixture of sugar and liquid thin enough to be poured on to the cake. Consistency of the glaze should be thin like corn syrup and will dry on the cake.

• Liquids such as milk or cream, may be used in glazes because the ratio of liquid to powdered sugar helps glaze to have a longer shelf life with no refrigeration.

Prohibited Entries

• Cake mixes or store-bought pound cakes.

• Alcohol. This includes rum, brandy, wines, liqueurs, and extracts by those names. Any violation of this rule, the entry will be disqualified.

• Frosting on pound cake.

• Decorative pans.

• Refrigerated items.

Judging Criteria

Entries are judged on the E.A.T method: execution, appearance, and taste:

Execution (35 points) - Considerations include, but are not limited to, the intention of the cook, proper representation of category, proper cooking methods, proper balance of ingredients, ease in eating the dessert, and cook’s grade division.

Appearance (15 points) - This will be the first thing the judges see. The appearance will be judged on the pound cake inside the loaf pan. Does this dessert look like the description in the recipe? Does it look appetizing?

Taste (50 points) - Taste is weighted the most heavily in the score for obvious reasons. A dessert can be too sweet, too salty, have an odd texture, or just not be balanced. Do you want to take another bite? Sometimes, what looks good does not taste good. Does the dessert taste appropriate for the recipe? Do the flavors work well together? Can you taste the primary element?

Creative Ability (50 points) - In judging the creativity of a project, a judge tries to determine whether the idea for the project is original or clever considering the age division of the participant. What is original or clever for a first grader is obviously not very original or clever for a high school student. The actual work done on the project should be completed by the student alone.

Scientific Thought (25 points) - Judges look to see if there has been an identification of a problem. The judge then looks for a hypothesis (an educated guess to the problem). Then the experimentation is evaluated along with the analysis of the data collected. Lastly, the judge considers the appropriateness of the conclusion reached from the data collected.

BESEDA DANCE EXHIBITION

Beseda Dance Groups

Czechs in Texas have preserved many aspects of their cultural heritage. One of these cultural activities practiced by SPJST youth is the Beseda dance, which is a composite of the many dance steps that were popular in the various provinces and regions of what is now Czechia.

When the people came together for a Beseda, which means visiting or social gathering, they would each perform the dance representing their province. There are actually seven distinctive Beseda dances, one for each of the provinces or regions. The combination of all these folk dances became known as the Beseda dance.

The Česká Beseda is the official form danced in the SPJST Youth Program. The Česká Beseda features the “Heel and Toe Polka,” or “Double Polka.”

The polka and waltz steps are the most frequently used steps in the Beseda, and they are usually alternated in the dance.

The Beseda is danced by four couples forming a circle. SPJST Youth Groups are invited to exhibit the Beseda dance at SPJST Youth Showcase and other events.

ROYALTY CONTEST

General Rules - Royalty

» Compelling, confident public speaking is a crucial skill that is often not developed in a young person’s formative years; however, it can strongly impact how youth view themselves and how they develop and succeed. The poise and increased command of public speaking that are gained from competing in the Royalty Contest will not only help youth in school, but also empower them in any situation they encounter in life.

» Mr. SPJST and Miss SPJST are considered to be the youth ambassadors for the Society. As such, they represent SPJST at several public events during their reign. More than anything, perhaps, the Mr. SPJST and Miss SPJST Scholarship Program is about presentation and poise and the ability to communicate effectively.

» The Little Mr./Miss is a mentoring program designed for boys and girls who will be in kindergarten through fifth grades during the 2024-2025 school year. The Junior Mr./Miss is a mentoring program designed for boys and girls who will be in 6th to 8th grades during the 2024-2025 school year. This program was developed to allow our young members the opportunity to experience the world of SPJST before they are old enough to compete in the Mr./Miss categories.
