Thanks Home Office Staff Special thanks to our Home Office staff. In 2001, the staff was utilized to assist with Mission 2100 in a big way.

The staff had a monthly referral contest. They solicited sales leads from both members and non-members when talking on the telephone about insurance coverage. They discussed fraternal benefits also with prospective new members. A recruiter of the month was selected each month based on the number of referrals generated.

The Home Office staff generated 1,023 leads that resulted in 524 applications written in 2001. We also processed almost twice the number of applications wri ten in 2001 compared to 2000 utilizing the same number of employees. I am proud of our staff. We have a very dedicated staff with many combined years of service to the SPJST. My comp liments to our Home Office staff.

Lodges to Receive Awards At the banquet in February, lodges will be recognized for achieving objectives as outlined in the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

In addition, lodges that achieved their Mission 2100 goals will receive special recognition. A total of $142,642.50 will be awarded to winning lodges. Some of these lodges not only met their Mission 2100 goals but also surpassed their goals by an addi-

Lodge Officer Incentives Drawings for trips will be held at the banquet for lodge officers in winning lodges that met the Mission 2100 sales quotas.

The value of the trips vary, depending on the category that the winning lodge is in within the lodge incentive program. Because of the combined SPJST Mortgage Interest Rates

effort of these lodge officers and sales representatives, they will receive a chance to win trips.

Sales Representatives' Incentive My hat is off to all of our sales representatives who worked so diligently in procuring and writing insurance applications for their lodges. Sales representatives wrote more than 1,800 applications - 600 more in 2001 compared to those written in 2000.

Right Around the Corner • • News You Can Use This Saturday is Groundhog Day. Supposedly, if the little fellow doesn't see his shadow, it means we can look forward to an early spring . . . At any rate, it won't be long. The same can be said for our district spring meetings. They're right around the corner.

Within the SPJST, spring district meetings were originally conceived as a way to provide the membership with an overview of the Society's performance during the previous year and to define the SPJST's course of direction for the coming year.

The same holds true today. An effective spring meeting provides members with news they can use. News about insurance.

News about fraternal programming.

Further, spring meetings can help build, relationships and rekindle a sense of vitality among the participants, providing them with ideas and

contacts they can put to use in their respective lodges.

In addition to conducting the regular and essential business of the district, whoever coordinates the meeting may want to consider allotting some time for members to participate in group discussion. So many good discussion questions can be overlooked simply because we assume that everyone knows the answers or agrees on them.

Let's make the most of our district spring meetings this year.

Wednesday, January 30, 2002—VESTNIK/3 cent increase in premiums collected from 2000 to 2001. As a result of our guaranteed issue program that offered SPJST members with $5,000 or less of insurance in force additional insurance up to $5,000 of coverage, this generated an additional $138,000 of annual premium. The average issue age for the guaranteed issue program was 53 which is good news for the SPJST.

The year 2001 was a whirlwind year for the SPJST and a banner year for sales. Not only did we achieve our sales goal of 2,100 insurance applications, we exceeded it by 279 applications giving us a year-end total of 2,379 applications written as of December 31, 2001.

First Net Gain of Members Since 1987 For the first time in 14 years, the SPJST reported a net gain of more than 600 members from 2000 to 2001.

This will be a great move toward getting our A.M. Best rating back up.

88 Percent Increase in Certificates Issued In 2001, 2,379 certificates were issued compared to 1,263 in 2000.

This represents an 88.36 percent increase in certificates issued from 2000 to 2001.

Substantial Gain in Operations According to Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, we expect to show a substantial gain from operations for the year 2001. Even though expenses increased in 2001 from 2000, income from operations has increased to compensate for the increase in expenses.

$64 Million In Insurance Written In 2001, the amount of insurance sold or written was $64,061,277.00 compared to $46,929,880.00 in 2000.

This represents an increase of 36.50 percent in insurance written from 2000 to 2001.

Vision 2002 Good things really are happening in the SPJST. We must continue to work together to keep the SPJST growing with new members. We have wonderful incentives in place for Vision 2002 to reward lodges members, officers, sales representatives, youth leaders, youth members, and Home Office staff, but we must meet the 2,100 goal again. Representatives from the Home Office will be visiting your

Youth Department Makes Donation The SPJST Youth Department recently donated $1,514 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. The money was raised though auctions at Youth Achivement Days (YAD). Cakes, which were YAD entries, were auction with all proceeds going to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. Youth contribute bake sale proceeds to SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund The SPJST Youth Department donated $1,514 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in 2001. Lodge Letters Section Lodge 15, Buckholts reports on January meeting In the first meeting of this year, the installation of officers was held with Brother Frank Klinkovsky doing the honors. With 21 members and several guests were present, the following were installed: President Douglas Williams Vice President Mary Frances Chudej Secretary Charlsie Svetlik Treasurer Virginia Williams Reporter Hilda Burtis Twenty-one members were present.

We also welcomed Dorothy Tomascik as a new member whom we already knew as a good friend and neighbor so now that she is one of us, is icing on the cake.

It was with great regret that we learned that during the holidays, our esteemed member, Raymond Posival of Austin, suffered a severe heart attack being first hospitalized at Seton and is presently in rehab where his condition will be re-evaluated after a prescribed period of time. We all wish him a satisfactory recovery and be, once again, our frequent guest.

Through the efforts of our Sales Representative Alan Gruenke in selling insurance and annuities, our lodge has been catapulted into the silver category. That also means a sizeable monetary sum will be awarded us next month.

After suffering through a bleak period after a looted treasury and member apathy, now under the able direction of President Douglas Williams, Lodge 15 is on a roll.

To sustain that momentum, he welcomes the support and input of all the members. As we say in Czech "Musime doufat, ne zoufat." Translation: "We must hope, not despair."

29, Taylor hosting tribute to Jimmy Heap and the Melody Masters Lodge

The March monthly meeting originally scheduled on the 10th will be held sometime before, during or after the District Six Spring Meeting in Hungerford. We will not have the usual gathering of the clan at the Branch Library in March. So, those planning to attend will have to come to the district meeting in Hungerford.

January Meeting Report

The meeting convened around 2 p.m. with a fair quorum present. The minutes and treasurer's reports from two previous meetings were read along with other reports given. Some motions were made and passed to further lodge business. It was decided to have the March meeting in conjunction with the District Six Spring Meeting since it is scheduled on the same date as our meeting would be held.

The fraternal hour buffet luncheon went off well with its standard fare.

29, Taylor county-wide sale, arts and crafts show February 2 Lodge

Dear Readers, Mark your calendars for February 2 and make plans to be at Lodge 29, Taylor for our Countywide Sale and Arts and Crafts Show. We're anticipating a wide range of vendors selling everything from antiques and collectibles, arts and crafts, food items and garage sale type merchandise.

Doors will open at 8 a.m. for the sale which is anticipated to close at around 5 p.m. Breakfast tacos will be for sale. If you or your group would like to reserve a spot, please give us a call. Booths are $20 and include a six-foot table and a four-foot table.

Food booths are $10 each. Booth space will also be available outside the hall for larger items. The hall will be open on Friday evening for vendors to set up shop.

Lodge 29, Taylor hosts a tribute to Western swing band leader Jimmy Heap at the lodge hall on Saturday evening, March 9. Music will be by the Texas Pioneers. Mrs. Jimmy Heap along with former band members will be in attendance.

One of Taylor's Own

Born on March 3, 1922, in Taylor, Texas, Heap organized the Melody Masters just after his service in World War II. Band members included Arlie Carter, Louis Renson, Bill Glendining and Horace Barnett.

A continuing spot on local radio show helped to establish the Melody Masters in Central Texas, leading to a recording contract with Imperial Records in 1949. Heap's tune "The Wild Side of Life" provided Jimmy and the band with one of their biggest breaks when Hank Thompson and the Brazos Valley Boys took the song to number one on the country charts in March 1952 — a position it held for 15 weeks. In short order, Heap's popularity led to a five year recording contract with Capitol Records during which time the Melody Makers recorded 32 tunes, including their big hit "Release Me," which was a top five hit in January 1954. Heap left the Capitol label in the mid-'50s to form Fame Records.

The Melody Masters recorded for Fame throughout the 1950s and '60s.

Heap disbanded the group in July 1977, but drowned in a boating accident before the year was over.

Lodge 32, Victoria invites members, friends to polka dance February 24 SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria will have a polka dance at the Inez Community Center at Inez, Texas on February 24, 2002. Doors will open at 11 a.m. The dance will be from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Admission is $7 per person. Music will be by Vrazel Polka Band and Bobby Jones Czech Band. Snack bar will be open to serve hamburgers and a stew meal will be available and also kolaches.

Hope to see all of you good dancers there!

32, Victoria elects officers at Decemer meeting Lodge

Our monthly meeting was held January 9, 2002 at Victoria Electric Coop starting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members. All officers were present. The secretary and treasurer gave their reports and were approved.

We had our Christmas party at Kettle Inn Las Cazuelas on December 12, 2001 with 51 members and guests present. A delicious buffet meal was served which everyone enjoyed. After the meal, door prizes were given and the rest of the evening was enjoyed by socializing with each other.

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje reports on January meeting El Campo-Hillje SPJST Lodge 40 held the monthly meeting January 13, 2002 at the lodge hall in Hillje. President Debbie Sczech called the meeting to order at 2:05 p.m. She welcomed 38 members and one guest.

Vice President Sheldon Holub led the

meink_as and guest in the Pledge of Allq,iance. A moment of silence was observed for departed members. Roll call cited all officers and Trustees present.

The minutes stand approved as read. Secretary Tria Svatek read correspondence. Lorraine Kana made a motion to donate $100 for lodge member Kim Kacal in the Avon's Breast Cancer Walk from Fort Worth to Dallas the weekend of April 26 28. Seconded by Ben Svoboda.

Motion carried. President Sczech

announced that the schedules of lodge meetings for 2002 were printed and are available for everyone. President Sczech read a letter from the organizers of the Blessing Cook-Off. Information was shared from the Home Office regarding the Lodge Incentive Awards Banquet scheduled for February 23, 2002. All officers, sales representatives and members who plan to attend are requested to submit their names which will be forwarded to the state office.

The Vice President had no report.

Lorraine Kana gave the treasurer's report. At this time member Leona Macha questioned the pay for mileage for our lodge. President Sczech stated she would check into this. Sheldon Holub made a motion to accept the following individuals requesting membership—Robyn Jeffrey, Erin Jeffrey, Kirk Socha, Eric Lipinski, James Kocurek, Bryan Garza, Michael Garza, Ardis Bacak, Thomas Salazar, Jr., Betty Salazar, Mary Eide and James Bacak. Seconded by Ardis Bacak. Motion carried.

There was no old business.

New Business Sheldon Holub made a motion to give Louise, El Campo and Danvange Fire Departments each $150. Seconded by Lorraine Kana. Motion carried.

President Sczech announced committees for 2002 year:

Lodge officers; Kitchen Committee— Dorothy Mader; Bar Committee— Allen and Josephine Bacak; Resolution—Janet Marek and Sheldon Holub.

Josephine Bacak gave the Bar Report. Sheldon Holub gave the Bingo Report. Insurance Sales Reports stated Sheldon Holub sold four policies.

Birthday honorees for January are Ben Svoboda, Ted Dressler, Tria Svatek, Charlene Smith and Angelina Bilek. Charlene Smith won the birthday cake.

Leona Macha won the attendance prize. Mrs. Macha told the membership the Disabled Veterans will be presenting Lodge 40 with a flag for the new flag pole once it is in place.

Karen Kaspar, District Six State Field Sales Representative, gave a brief recap of Lodge 40's sales for the year 2001 and announced that Lodge 40 reached the Platinum Award once again. The president adjourned the meeting at 2:47 p.m.

Gladys Yates spoke to the members about the new Vision 2002 Program.

The Youth Club performed for the members and guest. Refreshments were served.

Lodge 88, Houston Lodge 79, Corpus Christi reports on "no bake" sale to January meeting benefit LAM and President Hegwood opened the other worthy groups meeting at 7:35 p.m. We recited the At our January meeting, we had two guests, Karen Kaspar our old District Seven State Field Representative and Hector Garcia, our new District Seven State Field Representative. We want to say thanks to Sister Karen for all her work with our sales reps and work she did in District Seven. We also welcome Brother Hector and we pledge to give him our full support.

Karen swore in all the officers before the meeting.

We voted to have our third "No Bake/Bake Sale" with all proceeds going to the following worthy organizations: SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM), Education and Nature Center (ENC), Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) La Grange and Czech Heritage Society (CHS) of South Texas.

We voted to pay for the dinners of 12 polish dancers and four members of CHS of Harris County. These four members will be helping with research at the Czech Festival coming in February 9, 2002. Put this date on your calendar and come out and have a good, enjoyable day.

Trace Your Roots We ask anyone who wants to trace his Czech roots to come to this fest as there will be many research books and personnel available to help you in your search. Bring any info you may already have. We want to say thanks to Harris County CHS for coming here to help south Texans in their searches.

Two of our members, Frank and Susan Sacky, joined with Lodge 79 in buying a heavy duty mixer and donating it to Sokol Corpus Christi. Now, we'll be getting plenty of our beloved kolaches.

A big thanks to Lodge 79 sales reps for exceeding our membership quota for 2001. We're looking forward to going to the awards dinner next month.

Attention all Lodge 79 members— your fraternal activities reports must be turned in before March 1. If you need the form, call me and I'll get one to you. I know we all do fraternal acts each day, so please write them down and get them to me before March 1.

I was surprised with receiving a nice plaque from SPJST for 32 years as a sales rep. I resigned at the end of 2001—old age is catching up! I will continue to promote SPJST in the area. Also, thanks to Lodge 79 for the nice cake and Brother Jerry and Jill for their gift.

Something to Consider There are many elections coming up across the state for various offices.

You will be hearing all kinds of talk.

President Hegwood announced that the large American flag hanging on the wall was donated by Adella Hughes in memory of her late husband, Bill Hughes.

Roll call of officers was read and Tillie Helmcamp was not present due to illness. There was one transfer out of Lodge 88, Daniel Malina, to Lodge 63.

Recording Secretary Ho Orsag read the minutes of the December meeting which were approved as read. She also read a thank you note from the family of John Vasula thanking the lodge for flowers sent to his funeral; a thank you note from Naomi Spencer thanking the lodge for the poinsettia sent to her at Christmas; and a thank you note from Randy and Camila Hassebrock thanking the lodge for the flood relief check. She read a note from the Home Office telling us about the 2001 Lodge Incentive Awards Banquet to be held at Lodge 80 in Holland, Texas on February 23, 2002 She then read the list of those deceased in 2001. A moment of silence was held in their honor.

Officers' Reports First Vice President Marian Kadlecek asked that all names of committees be turned in to her by January 29 so they can go into the book. Gladys Yates will be hosting a workshop on January 22, 2002 at Lodge 88 at 7 p.m. Bring all your paper work and she will help you fill it out and take it to the Home Office so our lodge can receive the incentive award and premium refund. There will be a statewide tarok tournament on February 9, 2002 hosted by Lodge 29 in Taylor, Texas.

Roberta Johnson read the Profit and Loss Statement for December, 2001.

She also read the statement from January through December, 2001.

Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales reported that the youth had a very good year. She thanked King Hegwood for bringing cakes and pies to the lodge on Thursday nights and A.J. Stayton for his help in picking up the bread on Thursday nights.

Committees' Reports Entertainment Chairman Betty Theiss thanked her committee for its help at the dances and went over the January and February dances.

Marceil Malak reported the books for November and December were audited.

Bar Chairman E.J. Bender asked that if you are interested in working in the bar, please let him know.

Blue Room Party Chairman Pat Bruce thanked all who helped at the parties. Workers' Party Chairman Jeanette Bender reminded us that the workers' party is on March 17, 2002.

Florian Demny thanked his committee for its help and President of the Birthday Club Flo Orsag read her Annual Report for 2001.

Social Night Chairman Willie Wehring reported that he would get in the groove soon—it all seems new to him—again.

Men's Club President A.J. Stayton reported that the Men's Club is still collecting newspapers and saving Fiesta tickets. He announced his new officers for 2002. Ernest Anders is still on the sick list.

Scholarship Committee Chairman Linda Wehring thanked all her committee members for their help. Helen Hegwood reported that the choral group went to Needville to sing at the Needville Rest Home and that they would sing with the orchestra at the February 10 anniversary.

Dorothy Pflughaupt reported on benevolence asking that we all fill out our reports.

Districts One and Five State Field Representative Lynn Johnsen reported that Helen Hegwood received a bonus of $50 for highest volume of insurance written and Edna Wehring a bonus of $50 for highest number of applications. Last year's marketing campaign was called Mission 2100 Shooting for the Stars. This year it will be Vision 2002 Searching for New Members.

The big day coming up in our lodge is Sunday, February 10—our 37th Anniversary! It will be a great day starting with a dinner at 11 a.m. There will be plenty of entertainment starting at noon with the Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra and Choral Club. Then follows a great battle dance with two fine orchestras from 3 p.m. till 8 p.m.: Texas Sound Czech and Tom Janak.

Carrie Lynn Kadlecek and Tony Botello to Exchange Vows Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kadlecek of Lodge 88, Houston, are proud to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Carrie Lynn Kadlecek to Tony Botello, son of Letecia Botello of Houston.

Carrie is the granddaughter of the late Della and Frank Kadlecek and Lillie and Raymond Kahanek.

The bride-to-be is a graduate of Sam Houston State University in 1999 with a Bachelor's Degree in interdisciplinary studies. She is employed with Houston Independent School District in her third year of teaching at Burbank Elementary School.

A late January wedding is planned at St. Ambrose Catholic Church with the reception taking place at Lodge 88. After a honeymoon in Hawaii, made ice cream for which they are quite famous!

For some great dancing, there will be big band music with "Knights of Dixie" on Saturday, February 2 and Jack Melick on Saturday, February 9.

Then on Sunday, February 10, that wonderful battle dance on our anniversary about which you just read! Then on February 16, the famous Bobby Layne big band music!

In Memoriam Mary Cihacek passed away Thursday, January 3, 2002. The funeral was held on January 7, 2002 from St. George's Catholic Church. Mary was retired after over 30 years of service with the Federal Government. Mary's father, J.W. Cihacek was a charter member and he served as president as well as holding other offices in Lodge 92. Mary and her sisters, Phyllis and Hermina, attended and participated in many of our lodge activities over the years.

Annie Maly Belota passed away on January 1, 2002 with burial from St. George's Church on January 4, 2002.

Although Annie was not a member of Lodge 92, she and her family were ardent supporters of our activities over many years. Annie was a native of Shiner, Texas.

Our sympathy goes to the above families and may your loved ones rest in peace; Both of these pioneers will be missed in the Fort Worth Czech Community.

Roll call of officers was held and the minutes were read and approved as read.

Correspondence was read regarding SPJST cemetery markers via a letter from President Leshikar.

We read an acknowledgement of sympathy letter from the James Cerny family.

The Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards Banquet is to be held on February 23, 2002 in Holland.

All officers' reports were read. We were happy to have our visitor Lynn Johnsen from our Home Office. She spoke to us in regards to the Mission 2100 and the 2002 incentives.

Our meeting dates for 2002 were set: February 3, March 10, April 14, May 19, June 9, July 14, August 11, September 8, October 13, November 10, December 8 and December 12, Christmas party.

Birthdays for January are Lawrence Schilhab and Latisha Cross. There were no anniversaries.

Five cash prizes went to Alice Jochen, Frank Tumis, Rosie Schilhab, Amy Kieschnick and Latisha Cross.

Four refreshment prizes were awarded to Dorothy Tumis, Lawrence Schilhab, Rosie Tumis and Robert Kieschnick.

The capsule prize of $40 went unclaimed due to the absence of Larry Zajicek, Patrick Lehoski and Brian James Jasek. Next month's prize goes to $50. Please come to our meetings.

Friendship Club member recalls trip highlights This is a reminder that the members of the Fort Worth Friendship Club will

meet on Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Parish Hall. We didn't meet in January so it will be nice to see all of you again.

February is a designated month in which we bring "little gifts" to exchange, and also, don't forget your covered dish for the luncheon. Our hostesses will be Camille Bolcer, Sharron Connelly, Rose Romeo and Lillian Smith.

A Delightful Trip

I have just returned from spending two weeks in the Czech Republic. My sister, Lillie Kosarek, and I participated in the Dallas-Brno Sister Club Tour and had a delightful time. The first part of the trip was spent in the Brno area where we attended and participated in the Travel Trade Show at the World Trade Center. There, we got to experience and see every region of the Czech Republic. We were also invited to the Town Hall where we met with Mayor Duchon of Brno. After the official introductions and meeting, he gave us a tour of the building and later we enjoyed a beautiful dinner with him and the other official dignitaries of Brno.

We had planned activities each day and just too many to write about. But we did tour the Bohemian Crystal factory in Jiblava, Christmas Ornament factory at Trhova Kamenice, Mendl's Museum, Spilberk Castle, Valtice Castle, walking tour of Brno, saw the exterior of castle, gardens and lake (frozen over) at Ledice, enjoyed lunch at the Pavlov Winery, attended Sunday Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Church up on the hill, visited the site of the battlefield where Napoleon defeated the combined armies of the Russian and Austrian Empires at Slavkov-Austerlitz, toured the Cairn of Peace, toured the Tvorba Doll factory at Lidova Tvorba, toured the Archbishop's Palace and had lunch with the Jesuits at Olomouc. While in the Brno area, along with the Ebrenbergers, we traveled to Luzkovitze to see the house where Grandfather Vrla was born, visited the next village of Zadverice where Joe's mother is from, and another village nearby Hrobice to see a Kosarek family.

While in Prague, we did all the sites of Prague including the Castle, Golden Lane, Astronomical Clock, Old Town Square, St. Charles' Bridge, Wenceslas Square, St. Vitus Church, St. Nicholas Church, attended mass at the Infant Jesus of Prague Church, and attended the opera performance of "The Bartered Bride" at the Stavovske Theater. While in the Prague area, Stanislav and Jana Zika, cousins of Sylvia Laznovsky of Ennis, took us to the Tabor District to visit Grandmother (Jelinek) Vrla's family, the Frantisek Filip family at Sudomerice u Bechyne, mother's relatives, the Joseph Patril family at Nuzice, and the castle where Grandmother (Hejny) Patril worked at Kestrany. We also visited and enjoyed a delightful dinner before the opera with the Brazdil family, friends to Joe arid Joyce Ehrenberger. In Prague one evening, we enjoyed dinner and dancing to the music provided by the Melodian Band where we were joined by several of our professors from the Cultural Lan guage Courses which several of us attended in the past.

Conference to explore religous perspectives on Czech culture "Of the values the Czechs brought with them to Texas, perhaps three more than any others dictated the structure and growth of their communities: religion, education and fraternalism . . . These were people who placed great value in hard work and manual labor and had little regard for class hierarchy. Community members often worked together for common goals: the construction of churches and schools and the creation of mutual aid societies were of top priority."

Sean Gallup Journeys Into Czech-Moravian Texas

The University of St. Thomas' Center for Faith and Culture in Houston will present a conference February 8-10 that explores the faith, values and heritage of Czech culture and how Czechs and those of Czech origin carry this heritage forward in the Czech Republic, in Texas and in the rest of the world.

"Czech Culture: A Way of Life in the Light of Faith" is dedicated to the memory of Bishop John L. Morkovsky and will echo through the halls of the new Nold Education Building at St. Mary's Seminary February 8-10, 2002.

The conference will involve several presentations from an ecumenical point of view. Speakers, drawing upon their Catholic, Jewish or Protestant faith traditions, will discuss the historical development of faith in relation to Czech culture.

They will be discussing how Czechs sustained their faith and culture through periods of oppression and times when there was no Czech homeland. Likewise, they will address the current state of religious affairs in the Czech Republic and the United States.

Bishop Patrick J. Zurek of San We had an absolutely delightful time, mastered the Metro and trams in Prague real well and even enjoyed all the snow. When we arrived, everything was covered in snow and ice on all the trees was just beautiful. All the roads were cleared so we didn't have any problems in getting around.

While there, we experienced only a few snow flurries and by the time we left Prague, almost all the snow had melted. We just couldn't get enough photos taken in the snow. Everyone was dressed properly and we really never got cold, except for a couple of times while touring the Castles as they are not heated. Of course, some slivovice on the bus then warmed us up real fast. Our bus driver was always prepared with his homemade brew.

Antonio will facilitate a program that includes Bishop Dominik Duka, OP, of Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic; Auxiliary Bishop Peter Esterka, S.T.D., of Brno, bishop of Czech Catholics in Diaspora; Milan Opocensky, Ph.D., a member of the Czech Brethren Church and professor emeritus of social ethics at Charles University, Prague; and Tomas Kraus, JD, executive director of Federation of Jewish Communities in Prague.

The conference will begin on Friday evening and will close at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Immediately following the closing, there will be a Celebration of the Eucharist, presided by Bishop Joseph A. Fiorenza, D.D., Bishop of Galveston-Houston. The conference is designed to provide the opportunity for ecumenical understanding and reconciliation.

A reception on Friday evening will include light refreshments and music.

Reverend J. Michael Miller, C.S.B., president of the University of St. Thomas, will welcome the participants, and opening remarks will be made by Reverend Donald S. Nesti, CSSP., director of the Center. On Saturday, the Hradec Kralove Male Chorus, an international award-winning choir, will perform an after-dinner concert at St. Cecilia's Catholic Cathedral from 7:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

In Memoriam In Memory of George Freitag George Freitag, age 73, of Thrall, died Friday, January 11, 2002 at a hospital in Temple.

Graveside services were held Monday, January 14 at 11 a.m. at Taylor City Cemetery with Pastor Walter Miller officiating.

George Adolph Freitag was born September 11, 1928 to Herman and Annie (Friske) Freitag in Coupland, Texas.

George was a veteran, serving in the Air Force. He was employed at Kerr-Ban as a machinist and with Johnson Farm Implement.

George married Verna Mae Henninghaus in Taylor January 16, 1970.

A marriage that would have celebrated 32 years.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church and the VFW of Thorndale.

Survivors include his wife, Verna Mae Freitag of Taylor; one son; four daughters; and 15 grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Providence Funeral Home of Taylor.

Memory of Pearline Glaeser In

Pearline Glaeser, age 72, of Thrall, died Tuesday, January 8, 2002 at her residence.

Services were held Friday, January 11, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Providence Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jeff Ripple officiating. Burial followed at Taylor City Cemetery.

Pearline Christine Glaeser was born August 8, 1929 to Otto and Vlasta (Polasek) Meyer in Coupland, Texas.

Pearline grew up in the Beyersville area and graduated from Thrall High School.

She married Eldie Glaeser on August 10, 1946 in Thrall, Texas at St. John Lutheran Church.

Pearline was an excellent cook and baker. She decorated many cakes for the community. Pearline was also seen driving the tractor, helping Eldie with farming activities. She also was an avid gardener and was a wonderful interior decorator around her home.

Pearline was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Thrall Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Christ Fellowship Church of Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two infant brothers.

Survivors include her husband, Eldie Glaeser of Thrall; daughters, Judith Ann Fritcher and husband, Gene of Canon City, Colorado, Darline Strickland and husband, Glen of Dew, Texas and Sherry Marx and husband, Troy of Thrall; sisters, Janet Herzer and husband, Willie of Thrall and Gail Sladek and husband, Ken of Austin; granddaughter, Whitnee Taylor Marx of Thrall; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, MARY RUTH BABCOCK, of Temple who passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2002 in a Temple hospital at the age of 71.

Services for Sister Babcock were on Saturday, January 19 at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple with the Reverend Mike Harkrider officiating.

Burial was in Val Verde Cemetery.

Sister Babcock was born in Bell County to Joe Belicek and Marie Zajicek Belicek. She worked for the district clerk's office and then in the Bell County tax office, mainly in vehicle registration. She was a member of the Degree of Honor Lodge 37 in Temple and the SPJST lodge in Holland. She attended Immanuel Baptist Church. She lived in Bell and Mil counties.

Survivors are one brother, Joe Belicek of Rogers; and one sister, Helen Newman of Temple.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace and her memory remain with us forever.

Memory of Jerry E. Roznovak In

Jerry E. Roznovak, 88, of Hutto was called to his heavenly home on Saturday, January 5, 2002.

Jerry was born June 12, 1913 and raised in Taylor, the son of Joe H. and Mary (Mikus) Roznovak. He was married to Hilda (Krueger) on December 19, 1935 in Immanuel Lutheran Church, West Taylor.

In 1943, Jerry moved from a farm in the Taylor area to a farm in Hutto where he continued farming until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of Taylor Brethren Church. He was a charter member of the Hutto Grain CoOperative, a member of the Hutto Lions Club and life member of SPJST Lodge 29 in Taylor.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Hilda Roznovak, now residing at

Trinity Lutheran Home in Round Rock; daughter, Nadine Johnson and husband, Dennis of Hutto; son, Jerry W. Roznovak and wife,- Linda of Hutto; grandchildren, Rebecca Dedear and husband, Douglas of Lexington, Carole Johnson of Austin, Jeff Roznovak of Roger, and Brandon Roznovak of Hutto; greatgrandchildren, Jordan, Reid and Echan Dedear; brother, Eugene Roznovak and wife, Dorothy of Taylor, sister in-law, Hattie Schoener of Taylor.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; son, Nathan Roznovak; sister, Olga Krueger; and brother, Fred Roznovak.

Memory of Benjamin H. Malina, Sr. In

Benjamin H. "Ben" Malina, Sr., 87 of Victoria died Thursday, January 10, 2002.

He was born December 30, 1914 in Hochheim, to the late Frank J. and Frances Laza Malina.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and the Army Air Corps for four years and also served in the U.S. Army for three years. He was a life member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was commander of Post 4146, former scout master of Troop 241, and held offices at district, state and national levels. He was a deacon, board member and Sunday school superintendent at First Presbyterian Church and was currently board member and superintendent at Christ the Victor Lutheran Church. He was also a member of SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria.

Survivors include his wife, Jarmilka "Geraldine" Mikes Malina; son, Benjamin H. Malina, Jr. of Singapore; sisters, Lillie Georgia Zander of Shiner and Ruth Vivian Dusek of San Angelo; brother, Jerome Arnold "Jerry" Malina of Shiner and Ruben Bivian Malina of Houston; and two grandchildren.

Jurecek, 91 of East Bernard was celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, January 14, 2002 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. Interment followed at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in East Bernard. The Reverend Joe Verna officiated the services.

A wake was held at 7 p.m., Sunday, January 13 in the Davis Chapel in East Bernard.

Anton was born May 30, 1910 in Frydek to Steve Jurecek and Mary Tesar Jurecek. He passed away January 10, 2002 in Wharton. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church of East Bernard.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Jurecek; sisters, Annie Kopecky and Louise Womack; and an infant brother.

He is survived by daughters, Josephine Mikeska and husband, Joe James of Orchard and Patricia Ann Horak and husband, Rodney of Needville; sons, Adolph Jurecek and wife, Abi of East Bernard and Wilford "Sonny" Jurecek and wife, Pam of Wallis; 11 grandchildren; 14 greatgreat grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Youth Letters Section State Youth Director presents fall 2001 quarterly report Dear Members, SPJST youth club members were giving and participating this fall (September, October, and November) quarter. Youth clubs honored their grandparents for Grandparent's Day, enjoyed Halloween activities, and participated in parades. Other youth club activities around the state this quarter included: • Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club entered an educational exhibit in the Burleson County Fair. They received the first place, most educational award.

• Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club honored their grandparents with a special banquet. More than 100 people attended.

• Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club assisted at its lodge barbecue cookoff. The Youth Club served breakfast tacos and hamburgers.

This successful fund raiser earned $429 for the youth club.

• Lodge 66, Waco Youth Club members participated in the Moody Cotton Festival Parade. Their float received the second place award.

• Lodge 97, Placedo Youth Club enjoyed a visit to the Texas Zoo. It had a 30-minute interaction program with a live lion cub.

• Lodge 160, San Angelo Youth Club members enjoyed a pizza party which was hosted by their adult lodge in honor of the youth members' hard work and preparation for Youth Achievement Day. Lodge 196, Houston-West Youth • Club held its October meeting at AstroWorld.

• Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club donated a tree to the Longhorn

Museum in honor of the September 11 victims.

• Lodge 215, South Plains Youth Club worked on pinecone and glove turkeys for a Thanksgiving craft.

Youth clubs around the state continued with the Mission 2100 membership campaign. Congratulations to the following youth clubs who added new members to their youth clubs: Lodge 9, Snook - five new youth club members Lodge 17, New Tabor - two new youth club members Lodge 24, Cyclone - thre new youth club members Lodge 25, Ennis - one new youth club member Lodge 47, Seaton - two new youth club members Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje - two new youth club members Lodge 160, San Angelo - one new youth club member Thirty-one youth clubs submitted their second quarter reports covering September, October, and November.

Based on these 31 clubs, an average of 359 young people attended their SPJST youth club meeting during these three months. This is the highest total in several years. Thirty-one checks were issued to the youth clubs for a total of $2,140.

Young people are encouraged to attend their youth club meetings each month. For each member who attends a monthly meeting, the youth club receives $2 from the SPJST Home Office. Members are also reminded that they must attend a majority of youth club meetings during the youth club year (June 1, 2001 to May 31, 2002) to be eligible for Youth Achievement Day and summer camp in 2002.

Youth leaders, please note that the winter quarterly report for December, January, and February is due March 15, 2002.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club collects coats for needy; supports Afghan Children's Fund Dear Vestnik Readers: Our January meeting was held on January 2, 2002. We had 37 youth club members present with one guest, Kasey Sebesta.

This month, our club supported the Afghan Children's Fund and we collected coats and jackets for the needy.

Our club plans to go bowling/skating on January 20. This will be a lot of fun.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club enjoys bowling party Dear Vestnik Readers: Our January meeting was well attended. It was great to see all my friends after the Christmas break.

At the meeting, each of us got to tell everyone what we received for Christmas. We all had a great Christmas.

At our meeting, we made a cool American flag craft provided by Jordan, Sarah, Dustin and Dacey. They also provided the door prizes.

On Sunday, January 20, we went bowling. It was lots of fun. I bowled with Cullen, Josef, Cody, Ian and Shelby. We all had great scores.

Under old business, the members reviewed and updated their point sheets. We briefly discussed the used greeting card collection. I encourage all members to keep the used greeting cards coming in! We also discussed the collection of the used eye glasses.

The glasses that were previously turned in have been misplaced. If anyone knows their whereabouts, please let us know.

Thank you! The members agreed to change the meeting date to the first Sunday of each month at 2 p.m. Each member was given the opportunity to add a line to our winter poem. The topic was "skiing." The poem was then to be recited at the adult lodge meeting later that same evening.

With no further business to be discussed, the meeting was adjourned at 7:35 p.m. with four guests present.

Then youth then joined the adult lodge meeting and fellowship.

185, New Braunfels Youth Club treats seniors at center Lodge

Dear Readers, Our December service project was carried out on Saturday, December 14, 2002. Youth members stuffed Christmas stockings with candies at our November meeting. We then delivered them to the elderly living at the Eden Heights Assisted Living Center in New Braunfels.

We went door to door and gave each resident a stocking. Some of them invited us in to see their decorated apartment and some even gave us a treat. We enjoyed visiting with them and spreading Christmas cheer.

Burleson County Brazos Valley CHS sponsoring 15-week Czech Heritage Museum Czech course welcomes you The Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society (BVCHS) together with The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CENT) are pleased to sponsor a 15-week Czech Language Course which will begin Tuesday evening, January 29, 2002. This Course will concentrate on conversational Czech for both beginners and more advanced Czech speakers, and is open to anyone who is interested.

Its's Time to Register This 15-week Course will consist of one and one-half hour sessions meeting every Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., with a one-half hour personalized help session from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. These weekly classes will start on Tuesday evening, January 29, 2002 and will end on Tuesday evening, May 7, 2002. Late registrations will be accepted through Tuesday evening, February 12.

Classes will be held in Room 103 of the College Station Conference Center located at 1300 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas.

Tuition is $35 per person for the entire 15-week Course. Instructional materials will be provided, no textbook is required. There is no charge for parking at the College Station Conference Center.

Native Czech Instructor The instructor will be Mr. Martin Svoboda, who is from the Czech Republic and is the current holder of the CEFT William J. Hlavinka Czech Fellowship at Texas A&M. Mr. Svoboda holds both Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Czech/English & English/Czech Translation from Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic. He is working on his PhD in English and American Studies at Palacky University and is presently attending Texas A&M where he is studying English as a Graduate Fellow sponsored by the CEFT (Czech Educational Foundation of Texas).

The memorial to honor Thomas G. Masaryk is scheduled to be completed in April, 2002.

President Masaryk, an acquaintance and admirer of our own President Woodrow Wilson, was deeply influenced by American democracy, especially the ideas of Jefferson and Lincoln. He personally labored to found a new nation based on democratic principles. Throughout his life, he strove to strengthen the bonds of friendship between U.S. and Czechoslovakia. Now, he will be honored with this monument and recognize the civil and democratic society in central Europe that Masaryk helped to create.

Today, the Czech and Slovaks are strong supporters of the United States in the coalition against international terrorism. President Havel was one of the first world leaders to give his unqualified support to assist the U.S., in routing out the terrorists who destroyed the World Trade Center Towers and damaged the Pentagon.

BCCHM has also received support and approval from our own ambassadors, from Prague, Pavel and Martin Vanek, that they are with the U.S. and their friends at Caldwell. What great connections!

BCCHM and all of its members are proud to be American and proud to be a part of the mutual respect and support between America and the Czechs and Slovaks. The Museum serves as your direct connection. To non-members—the SPJST is a concept that is sometimes easily misunderstood.

To some, it's merely an insurance company; to others, it's a social club; and, finally, to others, it's a historical and heritage society. So who's right? At its best, the SPJST embodies the characteristics of all these definitions, demonstrating that the strength lies in diversity. The SPJST is a society that members can join for any number of reasons. It's a "package deal" built upon the idea of addressing human needs — financial, social and cultural. The ability to meet those needs and uphold strong human values is the mortar that holds the Society together.

What's most important to the member depends on his or her station in life.

What a seven-year-old wants from his membership is a lot different than what an 80-year-old would like to see. The sale and purchase of insurance is necessarily a cornerstone of membership in the

SPJST. The Society offers a wide range of insurance programs, annuity plans and mortgage options designed to meet the varying needs of its members.

The fraternal component of the SPJST further enhances membership by emphasizing the social and civic responsibilities that members share with each other and the communities in which they live. There are few limiting factors placed on local lodges and how they choose to meet their fraternal obligations.

Really, what it comes down to is initiative and imagination.

The guidelines which describe how the business of the SPJST is to be conducted is found in the SPJST By-laws.

Reform and innovation are healthy processes and they are what keep the SPJST growing.

Simply stated, the SPJST is an idea that is still in the making. With a renewed commitment to its members and the communities that the SPJST serves, the best is yet to come!
