Lodge 17, New Tabor takes top honors in State straight domino tournament March 2, 2002 was a very cold, windy and icy Saturday, but it did not stop the domino players. When we arrived, Lodge 66, Waco welcomed all with a nice warm building, a pot of coffee, doughnuts and their warm hospitality.

I knew we would have a good group when Martha Janca of Lodge 92, Fort Worth and Pam Franks of Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga came in.

Right behind them came Chris Krengel and Ed Scaff from Lodge 92, Fort Worth. They came in cold and ice to play to dominoes. When Donnie Suehs, Kenneth Paul, Donnie Paul, Gary Zwerneman and Clarence Set.cik from Lodge 17, New Tabor arrived, they could not believe that it was 30 degrees colder in Waco than New Tabor.

Approximately 450 country music fans converged on SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor on Saturday evening, March 9 for a tribute to Western swing band lead er Jimmy Heap. Heap's Melody Masters recorded scores of tunes f-o-r , tie late 40s through the mid-70s, including "Release Me," a top five hit in 1954.

"What happens if the tea reaches the rim of the cup? Their feelings begin to change and they get anxious. If we continue pouring, the tea spills over the rim into the saucer, then onto their hands, clothes, shoes and the floor.

How do they feel about us now?

"It is exactly the same when we talk too much. A little is wonderful. A lot is dreadful. Remember: To Lead Is To Serve. We want to give information that will serve the volunteers. We do not want to overwhelm them with it.

Do not use meetings to: • Bore people • Blame or discourage Before you begin: • Set a goal • Plan the agenda • Respect time "Almost every person I interviewed for this book commented on the importance of respecting people's time," says Ms. McBee. "The person in charge has to structure the meeting so that no one else has to waste time . . . People aren't looking for ways to give up their time, but they are looking for ways to enrich their lives.

"Question yourself: What drew you to the project in the beginning? What is great about the mission? What is fun about it? Keep your warmest memories in mind when asking someone to help you. Offer an opportunity to do something great. Make it sound delicious."

Ms. McBee goes on to tell the story of a committee she once served on where the chairwoman opened every meeting with, "Okay, what do we have to do this week?" She never took time to prepare an agenda.

"It is amazing how many people expect us to spend more of our time listening to them than they have spent to prepare their comments!"

I'll second that! If you are the presiding officer, reporting officer or committee chair, everything is so much better when you come to the meeting prepared. Personally speaking, I feel like I've shortchanged the members if I haven't prepared properly. You can get away with that sometimes; however, it's bad for the organization and it will catch up to you in the end.

Recently, I had the chance to visit by telephone with Ms. McBee, who is now living in New York. She was very cordial and seemed genuinely flattered that I wanted to share an outline of her "Five Keys to Running a Successful Meeting" from her book with SPJST members.

When I got off the phone with Shar, I really felt good —like I had done something right just by calling her.

That's a good feeling. It feels even better when you know you've made someone else feel that way!

Congratulations to all the SPJST deer hunters. You were serious hunters and the entries show there were some big deer out there.

There were seven entries. The deer went from eight points to eleven points and a spread of 14 5/16 inches to 20 inches.

The winner with the widest spread of 20 inches is Blake Kuban, Lodge 81, Needville/District Five.

The deer also had 10 points.

The winner with the most points of 11 is Leroy Levien of Carmine, Lodge 179, Warrenton in District One. The deer had a 19 7/8-inch spread.

District Three posts minutes of Fall Meeting The District Three Fall meeting was called to order at 11:15 a.m. by Sister Mary Steinman, District President. The Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag was led by Makayla Yates, Lodge 66, Waco. The Youth Pledge was led by Brooke Craig, Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

Sister Linda Trojacek, President of Lodge 25, Ennis, introduced Jake Holland, District III King from Lodge 25, Ennis, to deliver the Welcome. Jake is the son of Rita and Scooter Holland and a life-long member of Lodge 25, Ennis. He is a junior at Ennis High School where he serves on the Student Council and is on the State Champion Football Team. He currently serves as president of the youth club and enjoys going to Camp Val Verde with the Youth Club each Summer. Brother Holland extended a warm welcome to those attending the meeting.

President Steinman introduced Brother Jerry Mikulas, Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary. Brother Mikulas spoke highly of the great town of Ennis and congratulated them on a town of which they can be proud.

He went on to say that although the events of September 11 directly and indirectly affected many of our brothers and sisters, it is important to keep in mind that the SPJST remains a strong organization. As an example, SPJST continues to offer 6 1/2 percent on its annuities. In addition, our Mission 2100 is still going strong.

Universal Life interest continues at 7.25 percent. Mortgage loan rates are at a 40-year low. The Board set these premiums in October and our financial statements are in good shape.

Our LAM, which has formed a separate corporation, will be moving into a new building. Although the building will need some renovation, it will be something that we will all be very proud of.

Brother Mikulas stated that the reports and statements prepared by his finance office are audited by our independent auditors as well as the Texas Department of Insurance. These reports and statements have been found to be in good order. Brother Mikulas went on to say that, as long as he is responsible for the finance records, he will ensure that all information is accurate.

Brother Emil Petr asked Brother Mikulas about the term of the lease on the LAM. Brother Mikulas said that the term could be for as long as two years. It is an old building that will look very nice once renovations take place. The building was purchased and generously donated by Louis Hanus. The local lodges will be asked for donations to be used for renovations to the LAM building.

Sister Kay Lynn Kovar of Lodge 25, Ennis, asked the meeting attendees to stand in silent respect for our departed members as well as the victims of the September 11 terrorist attack.

President Steinman read a very touching letter from Jamie Lyn Novak, from Lodge 84, Dallas. Sister Novak, who was not able to attend

the meeting due to cheerleading competition in San Antonio, thanked the SPJST membership for its continuing support in her efforts to become the 2001-02 SPJST State Queen. She stressed the importance of fraternalism in our world today and how our youth will be looked upon to carry the fraternalism on for years to come.

President Steinman accepted Sister Novak's apology and thanks. She presented a $75 check for Sister Novak from District Three that will be sent via Sister Bessie Petr, who is Sister Novak's grandmother.

Youth members were dismissed from the general session to hold their meeting.

President Steinman asked for the approval of the minutes of our Spring meeting. Sister Kay Lynn Kovar made a motion, which was seconded, to accept the minutes with the noted corrections.

Sister Martha Durham presented the treasurer's report, which was also distributed to the attendees. The balance of the General Fund is $7,714.15; the balance in the Youth Club Account is $8,081.47. The reversal of the bank service charges were a result of Sister Durham asking the bank to waive these charges due to the significant balances kept in these accounts. A motion was made

by Brother Al Kercho and seconded

by Brother George Pauling to accept the treasurer's report.

Sister Kay Lynn Kovar made a motion to accept the various Committee reports as submitted. The motion was seconded by Sister Rose Steinman.

President Steinman then turned the microphone over to Brother Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director.

Brother Krizan thanked the membership of Lodge 25, Ennis for hosting this Fall Funfest.

He thanked and congratulated Sister Jamie Lyn Novak and Brother Jake Holland for their wonderful representation of District III at the State YAD in August. He also thanked and congratulated the youth of District III for their great representation of District Three at the State YAD. He also mentioned the participation of our SPJST Youth in the Texas Fraternal Congress last weekend. Sister Jamie Lyn Novak gave a speech and acted as Master of Ceremonies. In addition, SPJST came in first, second and third places in the scrapbook contest.

We came in first and second in the poster contest. He reminded everyone to remember and thank the parents, grandparents and youth leaders for their help and support in keeping our youth active in the various fraternal activities.

Brother Krizan reminded everyone that the Home Office will close the year-end books at noon on December 31, 2001. Please mark your calendars so no one will miss the deadline, particularly as it pertain to lodge incentives.

For those lodges who are still selling SPJST Anniversary Cookbooks, Brother Krizan wanted to let you know that the Home Office will turn in one more order (if feasible). The last order date will be November 15, 2001.

Brother Krizan highly recommended that individual lodges submit the

dates for important lodge events to Brian Vanicek in ample time to be included in the Vestnik. Typically, the fourth Sunday in April is the Spring district meeting; the fourth Sunday in October is the Fall District Meeting; the fourth Sunday in June is District YAD. The Incentive Awards Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, February 23, 2002 at Lodge 80 in Holland.

Brother Krizan stated that he had received word from Lodge 130, Dallas, that they are interested in hosting the Fall Funfest Day in October 2002.

They would plan to host this event at Camp Parker State Park, which is between Mexia and Groesbeck.

Making reference to the September 11 terrorist attack, Brother Krizan urged everyone to keep faith in America and continue living our lives. We are maintaining our rates on investments and have lowered our mortgage rates.

Brother Krizan confirmed that licensed agents must have 30 hours of continuing education every two years in order to maintain their license.

This is the responsibility of each individual agent.

Brother Krizan spoke at length about the movement related to Article 451. This Article, which came into effect in the early 1960s, states that the Supreme Lodge contributes to the District Youth Fund 60 cents per year for each insured member reaching the age of 16, not less than $500 annually. This money must be used for the benefit of the youth. In District Three, we have approximately 1,100 insured youth members ages 5-16 of which 70-90 are active youth members. The proposed change is that the contribution specified in Article 451 be based on active youth. No action has yet been taken and may be further discussed at the next By-Law Committee meeting or possibly the next convention.

Brother Krizan then discussed Mission 2100. He mentioned that, initially, many people thought that 2100 applications would not be attainable.

It is attainable, but it will take everyone's effort. In August and September, we have seen that it is possible. A lot of this has to do with the fact that this is the first year that the Supreme Lodge has issued quotas to Supreme Lodge members, lodge members, sales agents, etc. He suggested that most people want to be challenged.

As of October 26, there were 1,718 applications. This leaves 382 applications written (not issued) for the next two months. He recommended that we consider adding our own insurance as there are lots of incentives to lodges and agents. If agents and lodges meet their quotas and the state makes its 2100, then there are 1 1/2 times the local lodge incentives.

Brother Jerry Milan gave the Library Archives Museum (LAM) report and stated that they are on a fast track. They have set annual goals as well as five-year goals. The building next to the Home Office was purchased and donated by Louis Hanus. They are working to convert it to the Museum. They are being trained in grant writing and are beginning the process of seeking grants.

He asked all to reach into their own pockets. In addition, he requested the lodges to consider their charitable

contributions to this 501 (C) (3).

Brother John Engelke gave the Nature and Education report. He stated that they had received the Certificate of Incorporation, as well as the letter from the Department of Treasury of the Internal Revenue Service confirming that they had been issued an Employer ID Number. They are filing for the 501 (C) (3). If anyone has a small donation, they are taking contributions and are moving forward.

After the prayer was led by Dustin Harrison, the meeting dismissed for lunch.

The meeting reconvened at 1:30 and door prizes were drawn and given out.

President Steinman announced that the District III YAD will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2002 at Lodge 154, Fort Worth. In addition, the District III Fall Meeting will be hosted by Lodge 130 at Fort Parker on Sunday, October 27.

The winners of the Adult Needlework Contest were Pat Fowler, first place; Sandra Slovak, second place; and Sheila Motley, third place.

In the Adult Costume Contest, 1st place went to Linda Trojacek, 2nd place went to Mary Steinman; and 3rd place went to Kay Weeks.

Sister Kay Lynn Kovar announced the various booths that would be available for everyone's enjoyment after the meeting until 4 o'clock: nickel bingo, cakewalk for 25 cents, haunted house, country store for 25 cents, bean bag toss for five cents, white elephant products are priced.

Sister Trojacek announced that the canned goods would be going to the Meals on Wheels program.

Sister Bessie Petr presented the winners of the Children,s Costume Contest. First place went to Lakin Dietrich Lodge 6, second place went to Bracy Craig, Lodge 6 and third place went to Cassandra Perez, Lodge 92.

Sister Petr then announced the winners of the Christmas Ornament Contest. In the 6-8 age group, first place went to Bracy Craig, Lodge 6, second place to Tommy Weeks, Lodge 66 and third place to Makayla Yates, Lodge 66. In the 9-11 age group, first place went to Tanner Guidroz, Lodge 66, second place to Kim Culliton, Lodge 66 and third place to Dakota Yates, Lodge 66. In the 12-14 age group, first place went to Whitney Dobecka, Lodge 6, second place to Traci Dobecka, Lodge 6, and third place to Nick Culliton, Lodge 66. The 15-senior age group had one winner, Celia Dobecka, Lodge 6.

Sister Durham presented Sister Trojacek with a check for the hosting lodge.

Sister Bessie Petr asked the membership to accept Sister Diana Engelke as her new Assistant District Youth Counselor (DYC), along with Lynda Novak and Gladys Yates, who are her existing Assistant DYC,s.

District Seven reports on spring meeting The District Seven Spring Meeting was hosted by Lodge 79, Corpus Christi March 24, 2002 with 77 present. President Larry Wagner presided.

District Seven Youth Club members posted the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Lodge 79 President Jerry Sijansky welcomed everyone. District Seven Second Vice President Jerry Sijansky read the names of the deceased members for 2001. Appointed to the Auditing Committee were Belenda Barta, Diane Korus and Frances McDonald. Members of the Nominating Committee were Jerry Elzner, Thomas Novak and Ernest Spacek. All district officers were present. Lodges represented were 79, Corpus Christi; 93, Hobson; 107, Floresville; 117, Robstown; 164, Rio Hondo; 185, New Braunfels; 202, Jourdanton; and 217, Alice (not charted).

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes and correspondence.

First Vice President Glen Pruski recognized the 50-year members and age 96 honorees.

Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir brought greetings from the Home Office and presented checks to the district.

District Youth Counselor Liz Bielefeld presented the youth activities report and announced the winners in the SPJST Christmas Card Design Contest.

Supreme Lodge Chairman and District Seven Director Bob Bayer congratulated the winning lodges in 2001: Platinum—Lodge 202, Jourdanton; Gold—Lodges 79, Corpus Christi and 107, Floresville; Bronze—Lodge 133, San Antonio; First Step Lodges 117, Robstown; 185, New Braunfels; 217, Alice (not chartered); and 220, McAllen (not chartered). Million dollar producer was Bernado Garcia of Lodge 220. District Top Producers were Larry Wagner, Jr., Lodge 202 (applications); Bernado Garcia, Lodge 220 (insurance written); Melvin Strey, Lodge 107 (earned premium).

Treasurer Melba Novosad presented the financial report.

District Seven State Field Representative Hector Garcia outlined the incentives for sales representatives, members and lodge officers. Insurance data was compared between the first three months of 2002 to the same months in 2001.

Director Bayer presented plaques to youth members Travis Barta, Lodge 202, for recruiting six members and Lian Pruski, Lodge 107, for second place (tie) in state for recruiting 11 members.

Rest Home Director Jerry Sijansky reported the S.P.J.S.T. Taylor Rest Home is considering adding assisted living quarters. A collage of photos of rest home activities was on display.

Betty Jurica gave the Publication Committee report. Insurance Committee report was given by Polly Bayer.

By-law Committee had no activity to report.

SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) Director Roxanne Bertrand encouraged the youth to participate in the scavenger hunt at the museum.

District Seven received a plaque for its contribution in 2001 to the LAM. Education and Nature Center (ENC) Director Jerry Elzner will keep lodges informed of activities. Elzner introduced Pavel Ordos, a Czech exchange student from Cheb, Czech Republic.

Lodge 79 donated proceeds from its "No Bake" Bake Sale to the LAM and the ENC directors. Other organizations benefiting were Czech Heritage Society of South Texas and Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. Lodge 79 also donated "split the pot" proceeds to the LAM and the ENC. District Seven donated silent auction proceeds to the LAM and the ENC. Glen Pruski presented gifts from the district to fraternalist nominees for 2001. They were Jerry Sijansky, Lodge 79; Viola Kurtz, Lodge 133; and Jeff Barta, Lodge 202. Barta was also one of the state honorable mentions.

Belenda Barta reported the Auditing Committee found the financial records in order.

Lifetime Achiever and past officer awards were presented to several members. Jerry Elzner presented the Kentucky Colonel award to Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir.

District Seven Director Bob Bayer noted events 50 years ago in the country and in the Supreme Lodge, Ernest Spacek gave the Nominating Committee report.

Officers re-elected were President Larry Wagner Jr.; First Vice President Glen Pruski; Second Vice President Jerry Sijansky; Secretary Bettie House; Treasurer Melba Novosad; District Youth Counselor Liz Bielefeld; and LAM Director Roxanne Bertrand. Director Bayer, assisted by Legal Advisor Kacir, installed the officers.

The next lodge meeting will be on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. At our last meeting, we failed to see who was doing a meal for this meeting As far as I know at this time, there will be no meal. I spoke to some about it and they were not going to be able to attend this meeting, so I assume there will be no meal. Well, unless our president is going to order in for everyone. Dream on!

Anyone attending who wishes to participate in the exchange of door prizes are welcomed to do so. Please, please make your gift suitable for either a man or woman. They need to be generic gifts since we do not determine who gets what.

15, Buckholts reports on March meeting Lodge

The March meeting was well attended with two guests, Debbie Todd and Janet Roneh present. However, we missed our Vice President Mary Frances Chudej, who was absent.

Our Sales Representative Alana Gruenke announced that she had written an application for her two year old son, Orion Gruenke. She asks that you give her leads as she needs all the help we can give her.

We were delighted to hear that Raymond Posival exceeded all expectations and has now recovered to the point that he has for some time already, been able to return to his home in Austin. The other news was that sometime in February, our Secretary Charisie Svetlik, simply sailed through heart surgery.

That was the good news so now for the bad news that John Sefcik is gravely ill and so is Sidonia Svoboda. John, after being in the intensive care unit at Scott and Whit for three weeks is now in a private room on his way to recovery. Sidonia was hospitalized at Scott and White last week for several days, but is now convalescing in her home.

Of course, our wishes and prayers are for their eventual recoveries.

Members Attend Spring Meeting Once again, we are indebted to Lodge 80, Holland for hosting the District Two Spring Meeting where five of our members were presented the special achievement award. Those present were Joe Zajicek, Charlsie Svetlik, Kathleen Jurca, Louise Sakewitz with Sidonia Svoboda being unable to attend for health reasons.

Others attending were Douglas and Virginia Williams and yours truly.

Not only did Lodge 80 share its spacious facility in conclusion, they served us a bountiful meal—for free.

Now, that's real fraternalism!

Back to Our March Meeting ...

It was noted that, as yet, we have received no response to our respectful request of the Supreme Lodge to explain to us in the Vestnik why it was necessary to give their employees a $1,000 Christmas bonus. Now, when

we made that request, we weren't just "whistlin' Dixie." We were, and still are, in dead earnest. Until we receive a satisfactory answer, we will keep this as a live issue. Who knows? It may lead into the next convention.

Past Conventions Speaking of conventions and issues, I am reminded of the convention in Taylor when the 50-year jubilee of the SPJST was still being observed. There were lots of issues and those were hotly debated in the Vestnik, both before and after. It's to be remembered that the Vestnik was then still published in Czech only and in those times, it was full of contentious rhetoric about just everything. I neither attended the convention as a visitor or delegate, but a dear friend of my parents, Frank Machart of Culliham, did. He was not lodged in Taylor. He stayed with my parents and commuted to Taylor daily. According to him, the proceedings were anything but harmonious—they were just about everything, even the food, prices, etc.

Afterwards, it took one disgruntled delegate to make his observation in the Vestnik,"Ze tam bylo vsecko podesati lete, aj ti voli co tam byli peceni."— translation—" . ..that everything there was 50 years old including the steers that were barbecued."

What the convention failed to do or not to do, the great equalizer—timehas taken care of everything with most of the then-participants resting under the sod and finding peace at last!

By the time our next meeting on Tuesday, April 8 rolls around, the "42" Tournament — even Easter — will be history. I am just in time to wish everyone a very happy Easter.

Remember, if it rains on Easter Sunday, it will rain for the next six weeks.

Considering how mush we need rain now, that's a welcome prospect.

25, Ennis reports on March meeting Lodge

Lodge 25, Ennis met for its monthly meeting on March 14, 2002 with President Eugene Dolezal presiding.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Johnnie Krajca. A moment of silence was held for departed member Edwin Haskovec. Recording Secretary Patricia Fowler read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Financial Secretary Kay Kovar and Treasurer Cathy Krajca gave their reports. All reports were approved.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Mar-

garet Krajca gave her reports on various tournaments and other activities.

Youth Club Report The report on the youth club was also given by Margaret. At the March meeting, they worked on Easter crafts for the nursing home. An Easter party was held on March 10 at 2 p.m. They all had to color eggs and speaker Betty Macalik read them the Czech customs of the colors they were using.

Dillon Baker was introduced as a new member. The sales rep was Johnnie Krajca.

Known on the sick list is Charles Ellevan.

Correspondence was read from Sokol Ziska by Secretary Patricia Fowler. The Officer Workshop will be at Lodge 84, Dallas on April 2.

The Lifetime Achiever Awards went to Joe Ben Macalik, Victor Trojacek, Ernest Haskovec, Milton Martinek and Van Fowler. A happy birthday for March was wished to Joe Ben Macalik.

Lodge 15, Buckholts Member Celebrates 100th Birthday Pairlee Cockran, member of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts reached her 100th birthday March 1 and on March 2 celebrated with friends and family at the Battetown Baptist Church, Cameron from 1 to 3 p.m.

On behalf of the members of Lodge 15, President Douglas Williams and Reporter Hilda Burtis presented her a bouquet of flowers as a token of esteem and affection.

Mrs. Cochran was born Pairlee Barnes March 1, 1902 in Quinn, Alabama as one of five children: two brothers and two sisters. Upon the death of their father, their widowed mother, in 1916, moved the family to Milam County to be near an uncle, Vince Lucas, in the Rice community.

Pairlee married Fred Cockran on August 4, 1928 settling in and around the South Elm community, north of Buckholts where Mr. Cockran engaged in farming and she worked as a seamstress out of her home.

The couple had one daughter, Margaret. They were a very closeknit and loving family best illustrat-

ed by the fact that when Margaret left home to attend school in Austin, the parents were left suffering the empty nest syndrome. So much so that while they were attending church services that first Sunday, the men mentioned much needed church building repairs to which Mr. Cockran responded, "The church house can fall down, I'm going to see that young 'un."

Upon retirement, the couple moved to Cameron where Mr. Cockran died on July 28, 1984. Mrs. Cockran has lived in Cameron for 36 years. She resides in Cameron at the present time.

Mrs. Cockran is to be congratulated, not only on her advanced age, but that she is still in possession of all her faculties, thus being able to live alone in her apartment. No recluse is she, for she attends church faithfully and enjoys the company her friends and family.

May her life be an inspiration to all of us!

26, Skidmore reports on March meeting Lodge

Dear Members The quarterly meeting of SPJST Lodge 26, Skidmore was held Sunday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Community Center in Beeville.

President Linda Henkhaus called the meeting to order. Everyone in attendance recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Annie Cox. They were approved as read.

A moment of silent prayer was held at this time for our departed lodge sister, Lillie Mae Naylor, who passed away on December 11, 2001.

Linda sorted and explained all correspondence she had received since our previous meeting.

The financial report was given by President Linda as Sister Ruby Jancka, our treasurer, was not present at this meeting because Ruby's husband, Frank, had recent surgery and is healing at their residence.

District Seven State Field Representative Hector Garcia of Alice was our guest speaker at this meeting. He projected ideas on lodges quotas for year 2002 and told us about incentives for sales representatives and lodges that are given for increasing the lodge's membership. Brother Garcia brought various gifts and these were won by drawing members.

Our next meeting is planned in the month of June. An exact date of the meeting will be decided in the latter part of May. There were six members and two guests present at this meeting.

Refreshments were enjoyed after the meeting by everyone in attendance.

Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard to meet April 14 Lodge

Dear Members, The monthly meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas will be held on the scheduled second Sunday, the 14th of April at 2 p.m. (14:00 hours) in the conference room of the East Bernard Branch Library at 746 Clubside Drive.

On the agenda, there will be several important items in new business that needs immediate attention. Also, Fraternal Activities Coordinator Everett Kaminsky has arranged to have a speaker to speak on the Czech Cultural Center in Houston.

A very short meeting on the 10th of March before the District Six Spring

Meeting passed a motion to purchase a small portable building to be placed in front of the daycare playground on our lot on Leveridge Street. It is to be used to store lodge property now stored at the 106 Leveridge location.

The May meeting on the 5th will be held at the Los Amigos Restaurant located on Highway 90-A (Main Street) and Old Wharton Road in East Bernard. The gravel will come down at 12:30 p.m. (12:30 hours) so those planning to attend should be present a little earlier. There will be someone from the Supreme Lodge in Temple in attendance to present the 50-year pins to those members who have reached this plateau in their membership.

30, Taiton reports on March meeting Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers: Taiton, Lodge 30 held its monthly meeting on Sunday, March 3 at the Taiton Community Center at 1:30 p.m. The meeting was presided over

by President Karen Kaspar. The Pledge was recited by all followed by a moment of silent prayer. The roll call and minutes were given by Secretary, Wanda Dorotik. Treasurer Lisa Bubela then gave her report.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Wanda Dorotik gave her report including numerous notes of correspondence from the home office.

Also welcomed to Taiton Lodge was new member Gary Johnson.

Business discussed included the State Incentive Banquet held Saturday, February 23 in Holland, Texas.

Taiton Lodge 30 earned the Gold

Award. Karen Kaspar, insurance sales agent, was also recognized for being a $2 million producer.

President Kaspar expressed appreciation to the Taiton officers, all lodge members, the youth club, and to the sales representatives and sales agents of the lodge for a job well done over the past 2001 year. The sales representatives and agents of Taiton, Lodge 30 recognized were Tommy Drapela, FIC, Lenice Kaspar, Leroy Kaspar, FIC, Anton Peter, Susan Hoelscher, and Karen Kaspar, FIC. Also welcomed as new sales representative for Lodge 30 was Margaret Kulcak. Attending the State Banquet from Taiton was Kirby Bubela, Greg Bubela, Lisa Bubela, Marcy Dorotik, Kyle Kaspar, Leroy Kaspar, and Karen Kaspar.

The Velehrad cemetery workday for Saturday, March 2, was postponed due to weather and will be rescheduled. The lodge is selling SPJST cookbooks for anyone interested.

The District Six SPJST Spring Meeting will be held Sunday, March 10 at Hungerford KJT Hall with Wharton, Lodge 151 hosting. It begins with a noon meal and SPJST members of District 6 are invited.

New business included an update on the "Vision 2002" incentive program for our lodge. We achieved the "Lodge Roll of Honor" for January and February for consistent monthly sales. Members are encouraged to give referrals toward these monthly accomplishments for the lodge and through this members also can achieve individual rewards.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela gave her report. Youth members Kirby Bubela, Kenna Bubela, and Kyle Kaspar attended the Victoria County Fair Parade Saturday, March 2, and rode on the SPJST District Six float. Also Kirby Bubela and Kyle Kaspar attended the SPJST State Incentive Banquet on February 23 and were honored as "Gold Star Recruiters" for 2001. Kyle Kaspar was the overall state winner for a Walt Disney World trip and would be congratulated and honored at the youth club meeting

Katie Ann Holley and Frank Edwin Klinkovsky, III Announce Engagement Katie Ann Holley of Van Alstyne and Frank Edwin Klinkovsky, III of Austin are planning their wedding for June 29 at Greywood Heights Church of God in Van Alstyne. A reception/dance to follow at Seaton Star Hall.

Holley is the daughter of Vicki and Jerry Moody of Van Alstyne and Jim and Diane Holley of Lake Whitney. She graduated from Van Alstyne High School in 1998 and the University of Texas at Austin in 2001. She will be coaching and teaching in the Austin area in the fall of 2002.

Klinkovsky is the son of Frank and Debbie Klinkovsky of Temple.

Grandparents are Frank and Irma Klinkovsky of Temple and Juanita Bales and the late Darnell Bales of Holland. He graduated from Cleburne High School and is a 2000 graduate of the University of Texas

35, Elk reports on March meeting Lodge

Our monthly meeting was called to order by President Randy Pavelka on March 10, 2002 at 3 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led

Secretary Carla Pavelka read the minutes of the February meeting.

They were approved as read. The treasurer's report was given by Barbara Pavelka.

The Hubbard FFA had a benefit on March 3 and SPJST Lodge 35 donated the use of the hall.

The lodge has a carpenter finishing the outside of the hall building.

Lodge 51, Ellinger reports on March meeting The Ellinger SPJST Lodge 51 met for its quarterly meeting March 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ellinger Fire Station.

We were happy to have District

One Director Donnie Victorick of Snook and Districts One and Five State Field Representative Lynn Johnsen of College Station with us.

President Calvin Hlinsky had charge of the meeting. JoAnn Divin gave her reports which were accepted as given. The dinner to be held July 14 was discussed. Members decided to charge $1 at the door for members and $3.50 for non-members. Jerry Lee Halusek will be the 50-year pin honoree.

Beginning a youth club was discussed. ' The fund raiser of selling cookbooks was reported upon.

Lifetime Achiever Awards will also be presented at a later time. Also, the members decided to give the fire department a donation.

Mr. Victorick spoke briefly and thanked the president for the work he has done.

Lynn Johnsen presented the 2002 incentive program which is called Vision 2002.

Door prizes were then presented. A delicious luncheon was served along with drinks.

Next Meeting June 20 The next meeting will be held June 20 at the fire station.

Lodge 66, Waco Arbor Day clean up scheduled April 6 Lodge 66 will have an Arbor Day clean up at the Lodge on Saturday, April 6, 2002 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

We will be cleaning the grounds and we need you to bring your yard tools and mowers. We plan to plant a tree or some flowers, if you have some favoritq and would like to donate, please do so.

For those who cannot work outside, you may clean and work on the inside.

The lodge will provide a hamburger lunch for all workers. Please come out and help with this project and enjoy the fellowship of the members.

Lodge 81, Needville reports on March meeting On March 17, 2002, the SPJST Lodge 81 of Needville herd its monthly meeting. After a prayer of thanks, we had hamburgers and desserts. A big thanks goes to Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for making all the meat patties and cutting up the fixings. They were absolutely delicious. I would also like to extend my thanks to everyone else who made the desserts.

man opened the meeting. Melissa Kuban led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call. Added to our sick list were Bernie Tielke and Ben Tydlacka. We like to send them a gets well wish.

Under old business, President Vincent Newman, mentioned the 50-year members. We decided that the lodge would hold a special presentation of 50-year pins for these members and their families at the April meeting.

Since there wasn't any more old business, we moved on to new business.

New Business We had a lot of new business to discuss. First, District Five Director, Larry Pflughaupt presented lodge President Vincent Newman and lodge Secretary Benita Walzel with a check for the lodge receiving the incentive Gold Award. Next, Brother Pflughaupt presented Blake Kuban with a $50 check, lodge cap, and hunting knife for being the winner of the deer antler contest. Congratulations, Blake! Then, President Vincent Newman asked about our lodge scholarships for graduating high school seniors. Jeanette Newman said she would put the scholarship application article in the local papers and the Vestnik. The cut-off date for the applications will be April 21.

Under other business, Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel asked the members if we would like to donate to the Little League baseball team. It was decided that we would. Then, last year's scholarship recipients, Blake Kuban and Matthew Todd, treated us. They came forward and told the members what they were studying and how they were doing academically.

Next Meeting April 21 Our next meeting will be held on April 21, 2002. Benita Walzel so graciously said she would bake a roast, since we will be entertaining the 50year members and their families.

Darlene Blinka, Kitchen Committee Chairperson, said that she would make sure we also have sausage to go along with the roast. Thank you, Darlene. Members are asked to bring a side dish and dessert.

Money prizes were won by Ida Sliva, Jeanette Newman, Eddie Kuban, and Rose Stavinoha. Other prizes brought by Larry and Dorothy Phlughaupt was won by Dorothy Kuban, Emma Kujawa, Charlie Sliva, Mary Werner, and Edward Kuban.

Lodge 88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities SPJST Lodge 88, Houston lost an active member, Willie F. Wehring. He served on committees for several years and also on the board always doing his best for the lodge. He was happy working for the lodge and never said "no" to any work for the lodge!

The members appreciated his willing help! He will be missed, and we won't forget all you did to help us through the years, Willie! Our heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones.

Nat Gonzales and Sydney Jurchak were in the hospital, and we are happy to hear that they are better and at home with their loved ones.

The Lodge Party, which was planned by Jeanette Bender and her committee, was quite a success judging from all the nice remarks I've heard: such good food and everyone is having so much fun! Our thanks to all those who made it possible.

Natalie Zalesky, daughter of Myrlan and Garry Zalesky, and granddaughter of Elsie and the late A.J. Zalesky, and Colette and Vaughn Matthews, participated in a Foley's (Willowbrook) Fashion Show on March 16. She says she will continue doing so. We hope so, and wish you lots of luck!

She reported that Lodge 88 didn't meet its quota to receive the award in 2001 but it will this year in 2002.

There will be a meeting on March 26 regarding the ad valorem tax. Also Naomi Spencer received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Vice President Marian Kadlecek welcomed Tillie Helmcamp back to the meeting. It was noted that there would be a SPJST State "42" tournament to be held at Lodge 15 in Buckholts, Texas on March 23. She also noted that the other four considerations for the Lifetime Achiever Award were Edward Miculka, John Kosut, Marciel Malik and Leander Pflughaupt. She read a saying entitled "You Are." Tillie Helmcamp thanked everyone for cards and phone calls while she was ill. She missed being here and missed everyone.

Secretary/Treasurer Roberta Johnson read the Profit and Loss Statement for February, 2002.

Sergeant-at-Arms Johnny Broz said the kitchen is pretty quiet. He read us a joke.

Report of Committees Entertainment Chairman Betty Theiss thanked all who helped in the dances for February. She reviewed the dances for March. Chairman of the Board Cleburn Lincke said the ice machine was checked and repaired.

The repair bill was $90. The Board gave the Youth Club $350 for the youth Easter egg hunt.

The bingo committee gave the Lodge 88 Scholarship Fund $1,000; the Supreme Lodge Scholarship Fund $500; the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum $1,000 and the Czech Culture Center $750 for a total of $3,250. A motion was made and seconded that we accept these donations to various funds. Motion carried.

Worker's Party — Jeanette Bender was not present. Our president reminded us that the party is on March 17.

Birthday Club Flo Orsag no report but President Hegwood reminded everyone we will be having lunch on the second Wednesday.

Men's Club A.J. Stayton said that quite a few of the membership present tonight belong to the Men's Club. He would like to have all the men join.

Sydney Jurchak is in the hospital with the shingles. Nate Gonzales is in the hospital also. The Men's Club will be having a Fiesta Dinner sometime in September.

The Choral Club elected officers and they will be singing on April 2, 2002 at 7:30 p.m.at the lodge.

Report on Benevolence Margaret Roeder. Please get your reports to her so the lodge will be given credit for this volunteering.

District Officers Report District Director Larry Pflughaupt reported that it seems that all lodges will qualify for the ad valorem tax exemptions. He stated that on March 26, we will have an officers workshop here at Lodge 88 at 6 p.m. Lodge 142

will have a cook-off this weekend.

The Czech Cultural Center has its annual social this Friday night at the Junior League. There will be a FAC Workshop on March 26 also. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

District State Field Rep Lynn Johnsen reported on the awards received by Lodge 88.

The Lodge Incentive Program for this year is called Vision 2002.

There was no old business.

Josephine Pflughaupt read names of the birthday and anniversary celebrants. "Happy Birthday" was sung to all who were celebrating their birthday. Door prizes of $5 each were won

Edna Wehring's husband passed away Thursday, March 14 at Memorial Herman Northwest. Funeral services were March 18 at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home. Our sympathy goes to the family. My brother, Benjamin Ondrasek, passed away March 13, 2002. He was buried in Dime Box, Texas on Saturday, March 16.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Czech dinner, dance coming April 21 Meeting Highlights Welcome to new members Ernest, Julia, and Raymond Dueser and Floyd and Mary Hard.

A plaque to recognize the top sales representatives was accepted from the Joe Hubenak family. The first name to go on the plaque for being the top salesperson in 2001 will be Martha Durham. Martha also received an award for being the top sales person in District Three.

Czech Dinner and Dance The sales representatives were named as a committee to recognize the new members and those who provided sales referrals. The new members and those who provided sales leads will be honored at our Czech dinner and dance to be held on Sunday, April 21, 2002.

Sunshine Chairperson Mary Ann Kozel noted those celebrating special birthdays in March. They are Inez Krivanek, Jesse Cate, Steve Matusevich, Mary Myers, Rachel Pena, Justine Chaloupka, Richard Andreas, and Vivian Read.

Sympathy cards went to Albert Kubala, Louise Oujesky, and Evelyn Scaff on the loss of their sister in Pilot Point. Also sympathy card went to Kitty Rippin on the loss of her brother.

On the sick list were Barbara O'Donelly and Walter Matousek who is recuperating from surgery.

Ray Swartz passed away in mid February. Ray and his band played for

Saturday night ballroom dances at Lodge 92 for many years in the 1950s and 1960s.

Ray was 91 and was active in his community until recently. He was choir director at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Hurst and sang and played in retirement and nursing homes on a regular basis. At the behest of Martha Durham, Ray and his accompanist came by after a lodge meeting a couple of years ago and sang a lot of songs for our entertainment. He will be missed. Our sympathy is extended to his children, Raymond, Jaynie and Lois, his 10 grandchildren, and his five great-grandchildren.

Don Peachey Dance Justine Chaloupka celebrated her 93rd birthday at this dance. Justine regularly attends our lodge meetings, polka dances and other activities on a regular basis. Also many thanks goes to Bill and Norma McClendon who always accompany Justine to our lodge. Justine, we wish you have many more birthdays in good health.

Norbert Blazek, Adolph Provasek, Joe Kozel and Walter Greener provided accordion accompaniment for a large sing along led by Mary Ann and Mary C. Krivanek.

As is usual when Peachey plays for us, the dance was well attended. Joyce and Ike Eikanas of the Oklahoma Polka Club, Ed Kopecky and Lillian Kaderka of Granger and the Harold Strand's of Waco were among the many in attendance.

On Sunday, March 10, President Keith Kieschnick called our monthly meeting to order. We had 25 members and two visitors present. All stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed member Manuel Schimcek. May his soul rest in peace.

Secretary Alice Jochen called roll of officers and board of trustees. All were present except Fraternal Activities Coordinator Marilyn Spivey. The minutes were read and accepted with correction.

All correspondence was read. All officers' reports were given.

Sick Committee reports that Lawrence Schilhab and Patricia Schilhab were out-patients. Here's hoping all are on the road to complete recovery at this time.

Robert Kieschnick spoke in regards to the Incentive Awards Banquet at Holland on February 23, 2002.

Robert and Mary Ann Kieschnick and Nelson and Alice Jochen were in attendance. It was a good day with lots of awards. Our Lodge 142 received a Gold Award.

Visitors Larry and Dorothy Pflughaupt were recognized. District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt spoke in regards to ad valorem taxes and the Lifetime. Achiever Awards that he presented at this time.

Under new business, the annual barbecue cookoff was discussed.

Birthdays for March were Chuck Whitechurch, Nelson Jochen, Rosie Tumis, and Sidon Tumis. There were no anniversaries in March.

The capsule prize for $60 was unclaimed. Douglas Lueckemeyer, Arlene Dillon and Pamela A. McDonald were absent. The next meeting's prize jumps to $70. Come out. You may win! Five cash prizes went to Barbara Boyd, Alice Jochen, Bernice Walther, Elmo Walther and Keith Kieschnick. Four refreshment prizes went to Emil Kutra, H.R. Lodge 179, Warrenton reports on March meeting The March meeting was called to order on March 14 at 7 p.m. with all officers present. Secretary Kunkel gave his report and Treasurer Vasek gave the treasurer's report. Financial Secretary Baack brought in more local dues.

Lloyd and Joan Goehring reported on a workshop they attended in La Grange. President Goehring encouraged us to approach a friend or relative who might like to join SPJST. Door prizes went to Ora Lee Levien,

A hot dog meal and games were enjoyed after the meeting.

200, Bruceville-Eddy reports on March meeting Lodge

Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy met on March 6. The meeting was called to order by President Bob Miracle. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and usual routine business and reports were acted upon.

Correspondence was read and acted upon. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Dan Ferguson reported on upcoming Society activities.

Youth Leader Monica Ferguson reported on organization of the new Lodge 200 Youth Club and the first activity of the youth club.

An Easter egg hunt was scheduled for the youth club inviting community children from ages 2 to 8. The activity was planned for 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the field in front of the BrucevilleEddy United Methodist Church Family Life Building at 406 West Third Street in Bruceville-Eddy.

The lodge also decided to donate $100 to be a sponsor of the SPJST Temple Community Easter Egg Hunt to be held at Lions Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 30. In other business, the lodge approved $500 to sponsor the Bruceville-Eddy Mayfest.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 3.

The members of Lodge 204 met at the Koffee Kup Restaurant at 3p.m. for their regular monthly meeting.

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, April 3,2002 Present for this meeting was the State Training Coordinator Jim Wiest.

He gave the members some important information on annuities which the members needed to know and was appreciated. Thank you, Jim, for coming and for all the help.

The meeting was well attended and members discussed future plans and how we could get involved in the community. Billy the Kid Day in Hico was mentioned, but thought that we would not have enough time to plan for that day as it was on April 6. and some of the members had other plans for that day. The Fourth of July in Stephenville, Old Settlers Reunion in Hico and the Dr. Pepper Day in Dublin were kicked around. We need to get more information and plan just how the lodge can get involved in these events.

Jim Wiest told us that the Home Office could supply advertisement if we got a booth in any of these events.

It looks like spring is getting here as the trees are putting out new leaves, and we are having a spring rain that was needed very badly in this neck of the woods. Grass is beginning to green up. Spring is always a good season as it tells us that there is a new beginning and things will be better in the future.

Here is just a little something to think about that I read in a book the other day: The human body has enough salt to season 25 chickens, enough chlorine to sanitize five swimming pools, enough lime to whitewash one fence, enough glycerine to make a jar of nitro, enough magnesium for 10 flashlight bulbs, enough fat to make ten bars of soap, enough iron for one small nail and enough sulfur to conquer the fleas on one Yorkshire terrier.

Dallas Circle of Czech Women report on March meeting Our meeting was called to order by our President Bertha Podhrasky.- The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Faye Wright, and we remained standing for a moment of silence for Ottle Roznovsky, mother in-law of Mary Ann Roznovsky.

The minutes were read by our secretary Faye Wright and approved as read.

Treasury Secretary Vicki Kohn read the financial report and that was also approved as read.

Correspondence Secretary Evelyn Trojacek was absent due to the loss of her husband and son. The correspondence was read by Faye Wright as follows: a letter from Ryan's House with a tiny red sock asking for donations; a thank you note from Evelyn Trojacek for our calls and cards; a letter from Lydia Alholm with her dues. She said she was very busy taking care of Roy. She said that he still enjoys sawing wood with his bow saw, and she misses coming to the meetings. There was also a magazine from Julie

The meeting will be April 27, 2002 at Lodge 84 at 7:30 p.m. Twenty-one people met and elected the following officers for the Culture Society: President—Bertha Podhrasky; Vice President—Larry Laznovsky; Second Vice President— Bob Podhrasky; Treasurer—Melanie Podhrasky; Secretary—Ida Schultz.

March Meeting There was no meeting of the Dallas -Brno Sister City. The Fraternal Council will meet March 11, 2002 at the Sokol in Ennis, Texas. Hosts will be WFLA, SPJST, Lodge 135, and the KJT. The Nominating Committee nominated Bertha Podhrasky, and Eileen Jakbowski was nominated from the floor. There was a vote and Bertha was elected. The Nominating Committee chose Esther Cunningham, vice president; Faye Wright, secretary/correspondence; and Carlyn Ondrusek, as membership chairman. Georgia Brozek was named to the Sunshine Committee. Vicki Kohn is resigning as treasurer after 21 years, and Rosie Julius Stegall has been elected as treasurer.

We introduced our new members Lillie Jones and Mary Kubik. Bertha Malik had a car wreck, totaled her car and hurt her leg. Helen Oates is having a lungectomy. Evelyn Trojacek is too sad due to the loss of her husband and her son to come to the meetings.

Ann Zvlonek is doing okay and will have to have hearing aids. Mary Sebestic is in the nursing home, and Alice Roberts said that she mostly sleeps. Alice would love to be able to find someone to take care of her in her home. Evelyn Cechan is going for kidney tests and nothing has been found so far. Helen Parma is in rehab and working very hard to recover.

Vlasta Jurik announced that she would be available to fill in for any hostess who could not be at the meeting.

Our hostesses for March were Carlyn Ondrusek, Lillian Hamusek, Lillie Jones, and Martha Franka. We then distributed our gifts, and Esther Cunningham read an Easter poem and gave the invocation. We then adjourned and had a lovely lunch for 22 sisters and five men guests.

Cemetery Association workday April 27 Seaton

There will be a workday at Seaton Cemetery on Saturday, April 27, 2002.

Dirt is available for anyone to use to fill in on any grave at the cemetery.

Wharton County CHS reports on current and coming events The Wharton County Czech Heritage Society (WCCHS) met Tuesday evening, March 5 at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the First Christian Church. Fifty-five members, guests, and several new members attended the meeting.

President John Drozd opened the meeting and Monsignor Benton Thurmond gave the prayer. The members said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the Czech national anthem, "Kde Domov Muj" accompanied on the piano by Ethel Meek.

The secretary's report was read by Geraldine Socha. Rita Vanek, treasurer, gave the treasurer's report. Hattie Drozd, Chairperson of the Mailing Committee, reported that 14 members came to help with the mailing of the state newsletter, Cesky Hlas. Each month there are over 1,265 newsletters mailed out and also to several foreign countries. Mrs. Drozd has been chairperson of this committee four years.

Dan Marek, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee stated that applications forms for scholarships will be sent to all schools in Wharton County.

SPJST offering "85 percent loan" to qualified residence buyers Home loans and loans to purchase land are two of the popular member benefits offered by the SPJST to its members. As a result of recent Supreme Lodge actions, that program could become even more popular.

The SPJST can now lend up to 85 percent of the purchase price the purchase of a primary residence or homestead.

"By reducing the down payment on new mortgage loans to 15 percent, the board felt this would be a very atiractive program for our younger members and for the first time home buyer," says Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin. The maximum amount of any mortgage loan with SPJST is $250,000.

To ensure the stability and the credit quality of the SPJST mortgage loan portfolio, some limitations will be imposed. To receive an 85 percent loan, the loan has to be on a house, which will be the borrower's primary residence or homestead.

The interest rate charged for 85 per-

cent loans will also be slightly higher than our 75 percent loans. There can only be three 85 percent mortgage loans made within each district on a quarterly basis.

As with any mortgage loan the borrower must first be an SPJST member, which means the borrower or if married, one spouse must have a life insurance certificate with SPJST. While the actual amount of the life insurance certificate is not a determining factor, it is suggested that the borrower(s) have a certificate for at least the same amount of the mortgage loan being requested.

Wednesday, April 3, 2002--VESTNIK/13 March 29. The scholarships will be given in the amount of $100 each. To be eligible for the scholarship either the parents, grandparents or the student has to be a member of the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society.

President Drozd announced that there is a State Czech Heritage Essay Contest is open to high school students.

They do not have to be a member of the Czech Heritage Society (CHS) to qualify for the essay contest. The title is "Who Are The Texas Czechs?" The student is to research a history on a famous Czech person in Texas history.

The essay has to be typewritten in 500 to 750 words and can be dated from the 1800s to the present time. One essay will be selected from each county chapter and then one final essay will be judged by the state Czech Heritage Society 'as the winner over all. Dan Marek stated that the first phase of the amphitheater at the Czech Cultural Center in La Grange will be finished soon. The Wharton County Chapter will hold its second annual Fund Raiser for the Cultural Center on June 30 at the KC Hall. Several Czech-related organizations in Wharton County are contributing to this project. The whole day is filled with activities. A meal of barbecue chicken will be served from 11 a.m. to ?.

Entertainment during the meal will feature the Wharton County Czech Singers. Dine in or drive through plates are $6. Food is available all afternoon. A dance to the music of Bobby Jones Czech Band will be from 2 to 6 p.m. There will be craft booths, a live auction from 12 to 1:30 p.m., a silent auction, a raffle, pastries and kolaches. The proceeds of the annual fund raiser will be used for the building of the Texas Heritage Cultural Center. Mr. Marek stated, "You don't have to be Czech. Everyone is welcome."

President Drozd announced that the Texas Czech Heritage state meeting will be in Fayetteville Saturday, March 9. The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the business meeting will begin after lunch at 1 p.m. Several members were planning to go to the meeting.

CHS Celebrates 20 Years Rita Vanek announced that the State Texas Czech Heritage Society (TCHS) will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in October. The Wharton County Chapter was organized on May 24, 1986. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary in October, the CHS will publish the life stories of its members.

Robert Janak, Historian for the CHS, is encouraging members to write their life histories. Some of the topics which can be addressed are growing up in a Texas Czech community, Czech heritage at home, participating in Czech festivals, taking part in Czech singing groups, hosting visitors from the Czech lands, traveling in the Czech Republic, etc. The copies should be postmarked not later than July 1, 2002 and sent to Robert Janak, CHS Historian, 545 Threadneedle, Beaumont, Texas 77705. Reunions Kalich Family The 36th Kalich family reunion will be held Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the Fayette County Fairgrounds (Home Economics Building) on Highway 77N at LaGrange, Texas. The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center where the old Josef and Magdalena Kalich farmhouse has been renovated for use as a visitors center is located here. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Guests are asked to bring a meat dish, vegetable or dessert and beverages of choice. Coffee, bread, plates and silverware will be provided. The reunion meeting follows the meal.

Dick Chomout, program chairman, presented a very interesting video that he made when he was traveling in the Czech Republic. It was a historical video of a 14th century procession in the town of Tabor. The parade was honoring Jan Hus who was a professor at St. Charles University in Prague in 1349. He was the predecessor of the Protestant movement and was burned at the stake for his beliefs. The Hussite Wars lasted 29 years in the early 1400s. All of the participants in the parade were dressed in period costumes of the time 600 years ago.

The meeting concluded with a prayer by Monsignor Benton Thurmond. An assortment of refreshments were enjoyed by the members.

Memory of Manuel Schimcek In

Manuel August Schimcek, age 54, passed away on February 22, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 30 year, Joylene; daughter, Jennifer and son, Craig; sister, Jeanette Vaculik and husband, Adolph; brothers, Leonard Schimcek and wife, Jean, Wallace Schimcek and wife, Winnie, all of Schulenburg; twin brother, Daniel Schimcek and wife, Elva and Thomas Schimcek and wife, Carolyn, all of Weimar; mother in-law, Albina Tarnowski; sister in-law, Barbara Koteras and husband, Victor of Houston; numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by son, Jeffrey; parents, Alfred and Pauline Schimcek; and father in-law, Alex Tarnowksi.

Manuel was born on March 3, 1947 in Schulenburg, Texas. He moved to Houston in 1966 and began working for Walgreens Distribution Center where he worked for over 35 years. He was a member of Lodge 142, Houston.

The family held visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. with a rosary following on Monday, February 23 at Pat H. Foley Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Tuesday, February 26 at 10 a.m. with Reverend Monsignor James B. Anderson officiating. Manuel was laid to rest at Forest Park Westheimer.

of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of La Grange Lodge 106, wish to express the deepest sympathy to the family of our departed member HERBERT F. LANGE, 90 who passed away March 13 in La Grange.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 15 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church with burial in the Rutersville Cemetery. The Reverend Dennis Bragdon officiated.

Born January 5, 1912 in Oldenburg, he was the son of Otto and Katie (Onken) Lange. He married Eleanora Annie Hilscher on February 24, 1936 in Warrenton. He was a bookkeeper for Brasher Motor Company for 46 years. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Sons of Hermann, La Grange Fire Department, Roary Club, SPJST Lodge 106, La Grange, AARP and La Grange Senior Citizens. He was a city councilman for 11 years.

Survivors include daughters and sons in-law, JoAnn and David Milton of Houston and Helen and Robert Frey of La Grange; grandchildren, Dean McCrory, Julie McCrory,

Steven Frey and wife, Marieanna, Amy Lynne and Allison Frey, all of Houston; sisters and brothers in-law, Nora Subert of Angleton, Louis and C.B. Hudspeth and Norma and.

of Sympathy We, the officers and members of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family and friends of our departed lodge member, JOE "DOC" TROJACEK, JR. Funeral services for Joe J. Trojacek, Jr., age 73 of Fort Worth were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 15, 2002 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. Burial was in Laurel Land Memorial Park.

A vigil service was held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 14 at the Laurel Land Merwrial Funeral Chapel.

"Doc", as he was known by all, died on Monday, February 11 in Fort Worth. He was born and raised in Bremond, but moved to Fort Worth after he married. He was a retired assembler for General Motors.

Youth Letters Section Dear Members and Friends, February 23 and 24 was a big weekend for SPJST Youth Leaders.

Youth leaders were recognized at the Ninth Annual Lodge Awards Banquet held on Saturday, February 23 at Lodge 80, Holland for their years of service to the SPJST Youth Program.

Bessie Petr of Lodge 84, Dallas was recognized for 50 years of service to the Youth Program. Bessie is currently the Lodge 84 Teen Youth Leader and District Three Youth Counselor.

She was presented a plaque, an engraved watch and a scrapbook of memories.

Mission 2100 awards were then presented to youth leaders and youth clubs for their outstanding accomplishments in 2001. The top "Gold Star" youth club members were also recognized for recruiting new members in 2001. Kyle Skrabanek of Lodge 17, New Tabor was presented a six-foot trophy for being selected the Mission 2100 "Superstar" Top Recruiter.

The winner of the trip to Disney World grand prize youth incentive was Kyle Kaspar of Lodge 30, Taiton.

Congratulations to all youth and youth leaders for a job well done in 2001!

Youth Leaders Workshop Report

Youth leaders representing 31 lodges across Texas participated in the 2002 SPJST Youth Leaders Workshop held Sunday, February 24 at the Inn at Scott & White in Temple.

The workshop began with all youth leaders introducing themselves. Experienced leaders shared successful ideas with new youth leaders.

Following introductions, 20022003 Youth Program changes and updates were explained. The leaders were then presented notebooks containing all of the Youth Program materials. New merit point sheets and new quarterly reports were also discussed.

The youth leaders then participated in a "Youth Program Quiz" on various aspects of the Youth Program.

After lunch, Motivational Speaker Paula Brown entertained the group.

The leaders then worked in teams on a YAD project. Several crafts were presented and the leaders determined craft eligibility and the correct categories for the crafts.

The leaders also shared craft, scrapbook and poster ideas during the day.

I really enjoyed the workshop. I was so pleased to have so many youth leaders and assistants attending. Our total attendance was 91 people. Wow! I think this is the largest youth leaders' workshop ever. Youth Leaders and Assistants, thank you for sharing your weekend with SPJST. I really appreciate you and all that you do for our SPJST. I was also very honored to have these Supreme Lodge Members attending: President Howard Leshikar, Vice President Gene McBride and wife Frances, Supreme Lodge Chairman and District Seven Director Bob Bayer, District One Director Donnie Victorick, and District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt and wife, Dorothy. State Fraternal Activities. Coordinator Gladys Yates also attended. Thanks very much to you all for your participation.

I also want to thank my husband, David Nauert, for his never-ending support. David, thanks so much for all of the late nights and days off helping me get everything together. I appreciate you.

Mrs. Patsy brought two videos of camp to share with us, and some SPJST door prizes.

Our youth club talked about designing tee-shirts to raise money for our club.

Dear Vestnik Readers, We held our last meeting on March 3. The theme for the meeting was

Easter. We had a turn-out for the meeting. We had many guests and a new member at the meeting, Dillon Baker.

30, Taiton Youth Club reports on February meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, The SPJST Taiton Lodge 30 Youth Club met for its monthly meeting on February 3, 2002 at the Taiton Community Center at 2:30 p.m. Vice President Megan Marcaurele presided over the meeting. Reports were given by Secretary Kirby Bubela and Treasurer Kyle Kaspar. Chet Dluhos gave the dues report.

Youth Leader Mrs. Bubela reminded everyone about the State SPJST Camp and also about donating to the annual 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

Mrs. Bubela shared with us about the District Six Cemetery Association which has just been formed to help take care of the SPJST cemeteries in our district. Our youth club will join in to help in cleaning these areas.

March 2 is scheduled to be the first work day and will be at the Velehrad Cemetery.

Youth members made cards and Valentine items to give to Hospice in El Campo.

Door prizes were drawn and everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to Travis Krpec. Everyone also participated and enjoyed hitting the pinata Mrs. Debbie Krpec, Travis' mom, brought for games after the meeting. Kyle Kaspar, refreshment committee chairman for February's meeting, served refreshments after the meeting.

The club visited the nursing home the day before Valentine's Day, February 13, and shared the teddies with residents. Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club Welcomes Newest Member

Dear Readers: The Taiton SPJST Lodge 30 Youth Club met on March 3, 2002 at the Taiton Community Center at 2:30 for its monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Megan Marcaurele. Kirby Bubela gave the secretary's report and Kyle Kaspar gave the treasurer's report.

Guests welcomed were Paul Schoelman and Toby Riha. Also recognized and welcomed were Mike Ahlstrom, District Six Director and his wife Kathy and also Marcy Dorotik, District Six Youth Counselor.

Dillon Baker Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club welcomes new member Dillon Joe Baker, age 11. He is the son of Corey and Suzann Baker.

Dillon attends Ennis Intermediate School and is in the fifth grade.

He is involved in Ennis Little League and D.A.R.E. Program.

Dillon enjoys trains, planes, golf, hunting, fishing and football.

Johnnie I. Krajca was the sales representative.

Kyle, Kirby, and Kenna had participated in the District Six float in Victoria's parade on March 2. Youth members are asked to donate cakes and work at the cake walk fund raiser booth at the annual Taiton St. John's Altar Society Chicken dinner on March 10th. Youth members were reminded of the District Six Spring meeting also on Sunday, March 10.

Taiton youth club will have a raffle booth and participate in the youth entertainment later in the afternoon.

Lisa Bubela, Youth Leader, shared with us about entering the 2002 Christmas card contest to be held at this Spring district meeting.

The Taiton Community Center's annual Easter egg hunt will be Sunday, March 24. Youth members are asked to help with group games prior to the egg hunt and also donate desserts for the evening.

Kirby Bubela and Kyle Kaspar were recognized as "Gold Star Recruiters" in the "Mission 2100" membership campaign at the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet attended on February 23. Mrs. Bubela then also congratulated Kyle for being the overall winner of the Youth Department Walt Disney World Trip that was given away at the banquet and Mrs. Bubela shared with us that every active youth club member that recruited members in 2001 qualified for a chance at the trip.

Our guest speaker for the afternoon was our District Six Youth Counselor Marcy Dorotik. She spoke on all the upcoming summer youth activities for SPJST. Members read poems and door prizes were drawn. After the meeting, we had a birthday social for our youth leader, Mrs. Bubela wishing her a very "Happy Birthday."

Refreshments were enjoyed by all.

Czechoslovak Foreign Institute readying for 2002 Prague Summer Study Program The Czechoslovak Foreign Institute announces the summer study program for 2002. Date of departure form the U.S. is June 28 and return date is July 24. Group participants will be housed in the dorms of the Agricultural School at Suchdol with double occupancy rooms sharing a bath. Single rooms are available at an extra charge.

The dorm is situated in the northwestern part of Praha, linked to downtown by bus and subway. Three meals a day will be served featuring authentic Czech cuisine. Professors will be from the Filozficka Fakulta of the Charles University and a linguistic institute in Praha.

LODGE 202, JOURDANTON Lodge meetings are the first Sunday of each month at 3 p.m. at the Jourdanton State Bank in the Community Room unless otherwise noted.

LODGE 204, STEPHENVILLE Lodge meetings are the third Sunday of the month at 3 p.m. at the Koffee Kup Restaurant in Hico, Texas. Members are urged to attend and anyone belonging to other lodges in driving distance are welcome. Bring a guest and maybe we can make a member out of them.

LODGE 206, TRI-COUNTIES Lodge meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Lions Club in Mexia, 201 North Paris Street, Mexia, Texas.

LODGE 215, SOUTH PLAINS Meetings are held every third Saturday of January, March, May, July and September at the Senior Citizens Building in Tahoka at 6 p.m. The youth club meets at the same time.

Roll of Honor Every month your lodge meets its monthly sales quota, the name of your lodge and lodge officers will be printed in the Lodge Roll of Honor in the Vestnik to recognize you for your efforts.

it's all part of the SPJST Monthly Lodge Incentive Contest being conducted in conjunction with the SPJST's Vision 2002 Membership Drive.

Win Trips!

Lodges that meet their monthly quotas for 10 months in the year 2002 will be eligible for a drawing for three trips for lodge officers (three couples-three trips total) to either Branson, Missouri or Las Vega, Nevada for two days and two nights, travel and meals paid by SPJST.

Roll of Honor Picture All lodges that meet their monthly quotas for 10 months in the year 2002 will have a picture of their lodge and lodge officers displayed in the SPJST Home Office lobby.
