Steady As She Goes .. .

Are you a stock market watcher? If so, then you know what its been like lately. The headlines are top-heavy with tales of corporate profiteering and creative accounting practices. In short, these questionable activities combined with lagging performance in some business sectors have had a chilling effect on the stock market, with the prices on many widely held stocks dipping 50 percent and more over the last year.

What is surprising, perhaps, is that the stock market's deterioration has not severely diminished the strength of SPJST's investment portfolio.

Generally stated, the SPJST maintains a very conservative investment strategy, heavily centered on top-grade government bonds, investor-grade corporate bonds and mortgage loans to its members.

"We aren't heavily invested in common stocks," says Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin.

"When the market is flying high, we sometimes get a little heat from stock market enthusiasts for not taking more investment risks. However, in a volatile financial market like we are now experiencing, our conservative investment strategy shines, enabling us to continue to offer a highly competitive rate of return on our annuities and Universal Life product.

Interesting to note: The rate of return which SPJST offers on its annuities has not varied by more than one percent above or below our current rate for the past ten years.

That's not to say that SPJST has been immune to what's been going on in the stock market. The Society has in its possession corporate bonds with three companies which are in default, meaning that interest is not being paid by the corporation in whose name they were issued. The bonds in question were issued by Enron, Armstrong World and Polaroid.

"We- have already determined that the write-offs will not have any material effect on our total bond portfolio of approximately $95 million," says Sister Anglin.

One of Our Best Investments "One of the SPJST's best investments is our real estate portfolio," explains Sister Anglin. "Our mortgage lending portfolio is approximately $47 million strong and is truly an unsung hero when it comes, to listing SPJST member benefits."

When the SPJST puts a loan on the books, that does three very important things. First, it provides a creditworthy member with the opportunity to buy land, a home or build a business. Second, it gives that member the peace of mind knowing who he or she will be dealing with during the life of that loan.

To date, SPJST has never sold any of its mortgage loans as so many companies do. Third, the mortgage loan program represents an extraordinarily sound investment for the SPJST. By requiring a 25 percent down payment, our loans are extremely secure. In the rare event that a loan does go into default, very seldom does it ever result in a material loss to the Society. At the present time, there are no loans in foreclosure in the SPJST's loan portfolio.

Owning your own home, farm or business has its rewards. Unlike some investments, owning real estate provides the owner with valuable control and management of its value. Benefits range from the tax breaks one can enjoy by writing off interest to the possible appreciation in the equity of the property over time. Too, having your own place provides a deep sense of security, control and connection to the community.

In order to be considered for a mortgage loan with the SPJST, you or your spouse must be a member of the society. Likewise, each immediate family is subject to a maximum financing limitation of $250,000.

SPJST records 1153 applications written through June in Vision 2002 program Through the end of June, the SPJST had received 1153 applications for insurance and annuity certificates.

The goal of the Vision 2002 membership drive is to write at least 2,100 applications in 2002.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Vision 2002 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota.

The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count" reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through June 30, 2002.

Here's How It Works Lodges that achieve a combination of membership and fraternal objectives qualify for cash incentives in 2002. Under guidelines of the Vision 2002 program, these incentives will increase significantly if the lodge achieves its quota and the SPJST achieves its objective of writing 2,100 certificate applications this year. Current Activity of Receipts and Disbursements for the Month of June, 2002

SPJST Travel Group headed tor Bossier City August 25 - 26 It's Bossier City time. We're going to Bossier to get the money we left on our last trip. The trip will be on Saturday and Sunday, August 25 and 26, 2002. The bus will leave the Home Office parking lot at 7 a.m., Saturday morning and lave for return home at 4 p.m., Sunday afternoon.

The trip is $39.95 per person, double occupancy at the Isle of Capri Inn. This is where we have stayed on our trips. When you make your reservations, please specify room type — smoking or handicapped. Make all checks payable to "Texas Stagecoach." The deadline date is August 5, 2002. We will have to book the bus at 50 people before we can go.

SPJST members and non-SPJST members are welcome. Bring friends and relatives and let them know how much fun we have and we will make them SPJST members.

I have had requests that we include the horse races on this trip, but not knowing how many would be interested in going, I could not get the tickets. We will go to the horse races on Saturday with gate time at 1:45 p.m. Children may attend if accompanied by an adult.

When you make your reservations, let me know if you want the horse races and I will get the tickets ahead of time or at the gate as we arrive.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville invites members to attend August 11 Family Day event Dear Members, SPJST Lodge 4 will be holding its Annual Family Day Celebration on Sunday, August 11, 2002 at the American Legion Hall beginning at 11 a.m.

We will be having a social hour and cake walk prior to a catered meal which will be served at 12 noon. Barbecue pork and sausage with all the trimmings is on the menu. Ladies, if you wish, please bring a dessert.

We will have speakers from the Supreme Lodge and from District Six who will update us on all the great happenings of the SPJST. New members and 50-year members will be honored. Door prizes, prize drawings, bingo and entertainment by our youth will provide us with a very pleasant afternoon.

6, Cottonwood 105th summer picnic scheduled for July 21 Lodge

Hi! I am trying to get this in so it will appear in the July 17 Vestnik, so this may be a bit short. Brother Johnnie Krizan, President, brought the meeting to order on July 7, 2002 at 2 p.m. Courtney Halbert, along with Brittany and Dakota Hykel, led all in Pledge of Allegiance. Brittany Hykel gave our motto, along with Dakota Hykel at her side.

Flagbearer Sister Georgia Soukup gave her report of 30 members present at our meeting. All officers were present with exception of Sister Peggy Dobecka.

Call (800) 727-7578 President Krizan called upon Secretary, Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting. The minutes were approved as read. She also read correspondence from State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Gladys Yates, regarding a golf tournament coming up. I am sorry, but I missed the dates, so watch your Vestnik for details. This golf tournament is a benefit held by the Home Office for some proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House.

They also welcome any donations towards this benefit.

Sister Barbara also read some correspondence from Melanie Zavodny, State Youth Director, regarding all youth and their accomplishments. She also read a thank you note given to her

by Sister Stella Perez from Sister Peggy Dobecka. It was from the Willie Mae Schuetz Family.

Youth Report Due to the absence Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer and Youth Leader, Sister Stella Perez gave her reports. The treasurer's report was approved as given. In giving the Youth Club report, it was reported that the youth took cakes to the rest home on June 5 and again on July 3. On June 23, Youth Achievement Day (YAD) was held at Lodge 154, Fort Worth. There were lots of winners which I previously mentioned in my YAD report earlier. Congratulations to all our kids!

They an did a super job with their talents.

On Friday, June 28, the youth had a swim party and pizza, along with a short meeting. They discussed the upcoming picnic and camp. The youth will set up the bingo and prize drawing on Thursday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m. Sister Peggy sent word that she will be at our picnic on July 21 to help work the bingo since Sister Lydia Dobecka, Assistant Youth Leader, is still very ill. All of us at Lodge 6, Cottonwood, miss Lydia very much and we all send get well wishes to her.

We all look forward to when we get to see her again. She is at a hospital in Fort Worth for much recuperation.

Oops! I almost forgot. The youth club needs everyone to please bring bingo prizes and also prize drawing items for their bingo and fund raisers at our picnic on July 21. Also, anyone wishing to help out with the bingo and prize drawing, please come on out on Sunday and enjoy a meal and then help where needed.

Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary, gave his report of six juveniles and four adults for May and June as new members. Welcome to all the new members, along with two trans-

fers from Lodge 66—Jimmy and Evelyn Stuckly. Thanks to our Sales Representatives, Brothers Robert Dobecka and Jerry Kucera. We all look forward to seeing you all of you folks at our meetings and other activities.

Brother George reported hall bookings for July and August. There will be socials on July 19 and August 2 and 16. An Insurance Sales Meeting will be held at our lodge on July 29 at 6:30 p.m. Brother George also reported that our next trustees' meeting will be held on August 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, gave her report of sending ten new member invitations. She also reported again on tournaments, but I failed to get the information again, so watch your Vestnik. Sister Barbara also mentioned that the Home Office in Temple, Texas was promoting another bus trip. It will be to the casino and horse races.

It's Picnic Time It is that time! Our 105th annual picnic will be held on July 21. Barbara said she needs lots of helpers in the kitchen. The picnic workday will start at 9 a.m., Saturday, July 20 with peeling and cutting up of potatoes, dressing the chicken, and other activities. Kitchen helpers are needed at 5 a.m. on Sunday morning, July 21, or soon thereafter. I also understand that the West Boys Scouts are going to help us out again this year with our picnic. We look forward to your helping us, so come on out.

Brother Johnnie called upon the Sunshine Committee, Sister Hattie Kaska, for her report. She reported sending a get well card to Sister Lydia Dobecka. We all hope she continues to improve each day. Sympathy cards were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hykel and Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Sadler, upon the death of their mother.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz. Our condolences to all of her-family.

Brother Jerry Kucera, District Three Sales Representative, reported to us that Lodge 6, Cottonwood, has 32 applications in for the year. We are past our goal, but still have a long way to go, so turn in some names to any of the sales representatives of the lodge.

Sales Representatives are Sister Ruth Krizan, and Brothers Johnnie Krizan, Robert Dobecka, Jerry Kucera, and Royce Zatopek.

Christmas Ornaments Our Christmas ornaments through the West Chamber of Commerce that have been mentioned in the past are here. If any members wishes one or more of these ornaments at $7.50 each, you may contact Raymond and Mary Marek at 826-3622. Also there are some nice stands to hold these ornaments that you may obtain for $2.50 from Irene Schiemenz, TexCzech Crafts and Quilting, Main Street, West, Texas. Her phone at her shop is 826-0100.

Other business that was mentioned was WestFest will be coming up Labor Day Weekend, August 31, September 1, and will need lots of workers in advance as well as on that weekend and beyond. It was also mentioned that about 10 youth will be going to camp and will not be able to be at our picnic again this year to help out.

Building Centennial It was also mentioned that our 100th building anniversary will be coming up for September 8. We are planning a booklet similar to the one we did for our 100th Lodge 6 anniversary. Ad selections are: full page $75 black-and-white and $150 color; 1/2 page $50 and $90 color; 1/3 page $40 & $75 color; 1/4 page $40 and $75 color; 1/8 page $25 and $40 color; and $2 per line.

Anyone with old pictures of our lodge in some manner are welcome to contact Johnnie Krizan and let us make a copy for our brochure. Ads with more than one picture will require an additional $10 processing fee for each picture added. That is, it has been mentioned to sponsor them if they want to participate again.

Lodge members extended "Happy Birthday" wishes to Evelyn Bezdek, as she was the only one present with a July birthday. But I know of another July birthday and we missed him at our meeting. Happy birthday to Robert Dobecka on July 19. Door prizes were drawn with the $5 door prize being won by Brother Milton Peterson. The progressive door prize winner was Delton Eugene Stuckly (not present). Various other door prizes were exchanged.

Spray them with hairspray and they will take a quick dive. * Sealed envelope - Put in the freezer for a few hours, then slide a knife under the flap. The envelope can then be resealed.

(Hmmm?) * Use empty toilet paper roll to store appliance cords. It keeps them neat and you can write on the roll what appliance it belongs to.

* Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least three hours prior to burning. * To clean artificial flowers, pour some salt into a paper bag and add the flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt and leave your artificial flowers looking like new! Works like a charm! * To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to a boil on stovetop. * Spray your Tupperware with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato based sauces and there won't be any stains.

* For icy doorsteps in freezing temperatures: get warm water and put Dawn dish washing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps. They won't refreeze.

* When a cake recipe calls for flouting the baking pan, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead and there won't be any white mess on the outside of the cake.

* Crayon marks on walls? This worked wonderfully! A damp rag dipped in baking soda. Comes off with little effort — elbow grease that is!

* Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks.

* Permanent marker on appliances/ counter tops — like store receipt blue! Rubbing alcohol on paper towel. * Whenever you purchase a box of SOS Pads, immediately take a pair of scissors and cut each pad into halves. A box of SOS pads lasts indefinitely! It also sharpens your scissors! * Blood stains on clothes? Not to worry! Just pour a little peroxide on a cloth and proceed to wipe off every drop of blood. Works every time! * Use vertical strokes when washing windows outside and horizontal for inside windows. This way you can tell which side has the streaks.

Straight vinegar will get outside windows really clean. Don't wash windows on a sunny day. They will dry too quickly and will probably streak. * Spray a bit of perfume on the light bulb in any room to create a lovely light scent in each room when the light is turned on. Place fabric softener sheets in dresser drawers and your clothes will smell freshlywashed for weeks to come. You can also do this with towels and linen.

* When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to help bring out the corn's natural sweetness. * Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away. * Don't throw out all that leftover wine: Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces. * To get rid of itch from mosquito bites, try applying soap on the area and you will experience instant relief. * Ants, ants, ants everywhere .. .

Well, they are said too never cross a chalk line. So get your chalk out and draw a line on the floor or wherever ants tend to march. See for yourself ! * Use air-freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and better still, leaves a lovely smell to the shine. * When you get a splinter, reach for the scotch tape before resorting to tweezers or a needle. Simply put the scotch tape over the splinter, and then pull it off. Scotch tape removes most splinters painlessly and easily.

Lodge 30, Taiton met on Sunday, June 2, 2002 at the Taiton Community Center for their monthly meeting at 12:30 p.m. President Karen Kaspar presided. Special guests welcomed to the meeting were District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and Dan Marek, who was the guest speaker for the afternoon. Secretary Wanda Dorotik read the minutes and Treasurer Lisa Bubela gave her report.

Various business items were discussed. On May 13, 2002 — on behalf of the SPJST Supreme Lodge — Karen Kaspar presented Taiton Youth Club member and graduating senior T.J. Drapela with two scholarships totally $1,750. The presentation was made at the El Campo High School Scholarship Banquet.

Let's Get Cookin' Members agreed to purchase another box of SPJST cookbooks and continue re-selling them. Everyone was reminded about the District Six barbecue cookoff fund raiser to be held September 14, 2002 at the Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje hall. Contact Debbie Sczech and Tria Svatek for registration and entry fees for cookoff teams and Karen Kaspar for booth rentals and prize drawing tickets.

President Kaspar noted Lodge 30, Taiton's applications and insurance written for the year thus far. Referrals for membership can be directed to the local sales agents of the lodge. On July 23, a workshop will be held for District Six lodge officers and Fraternal Activity Coordinators (FACs) at the Taiton Community Center. Communication was read regarding the number of delegates to the next convention. The letter referenced our organizational By-Laws for determining the number of delegates assigned to each lodge.

Lending a Helping Hand Members voted to donate to the 2002 SPJST Texas Barbecue Lunch to be held on June 20 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple as its "Join Hands Day" project. District Six members were invited to enjoy a family outing on Saturday, June 22 at the Astros ball game, starting at 7 p.m.

Members were advised to contact Director Ahlstrom for tickets.

Dan Marek from El Campo was the guest speaker for the afternoon. He talked about the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange and updated everyone about the construction that was in progress. A "Czech Heritage Day Benefit" for the Center will be held on Sunday, June 30, 2002 at the K.C. Hall in El Campo.

On behalf of the Taiton lodge, youth club member Dylan Treumer presented Mr. Marek with a gift and all thanked him for his work in preserving our Czech heritage.

Members and guests enjoyed refreshments of kolaches, coffee, and lemonade.

47, Seaton reports on July meeting Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The regular lodge meeting of Lodge 47 was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 7 with President Edwin Pechal opening the meeting. Neil Rabroker and Josef Morris brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for the departed members Brother Lonnie Schroeder and Sister Willie Dean Ezell.

Brother Schroeder was a regular at the meetings along with the son, Freddie.

Deepest sympathy to the families of these departed. May we honor their memories forever.

Secretary Sister Adeline Kohutek read the roll call of officers, trustees, and sales representatives. She also read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved as read.

Welcome Aboard!

Wednesday, July 17, 2002--VESTNIK/9 gave their respective reports. President Pechal announced a work day to dispose of limbs on Saturday, July 12 at 7 a.m.; the District Two Youth Achievement Day will be held on Sunday, July 28; the barbecue cookoff is set for July 19 and 20; "karaoke under the stars" will be on Friday, July 19 and hamburgers and french fries will be available also; and the ice machine is getting worn out so we approved to purchase a new one to replace it.

Vice President Edwin Vasicek is still needing judges for the cookoff.

So if you wish to taste chicken, pork, beef or beans on July 20, please let Edwin know so he can put your name down.

Coming Events Second Vice President Beth Rabroker gave her report. She stated that Rickie Crow and Michael Morris were third place winners in the SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament. Rickie was present. The SPJST State Golf Tournament is set for October 12 and 13 in Temple and the tarok tournament is at New Tabor. Check the Vestnik for more particulars on the golf tournament. We voted to sponsor a hole at this tournament for $100. Everyone was reminded to fill in the activity report for June.

Our 100th anniversary of Lodge 47 will be next year, 2003, so we'll be making plans for the celebration during this year to get ready for it.

Treasurer Gladys Marek gave the monthly report and also the picnic report for this year. She gave the ticket report for the month of June. The other chairpersons all gave their reports.

District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky gave the update on the Vision 2002. The sales thus far are more than half way there already.

Everyone is very confident that the goal will be reached again.

We vote to have a membership drive in the coming months.

The youth club members plus the Youth Leader Heidi Bartek came to the main hall. They were awarded some awards plus they gave certificates to the sales representatives because they are gaining more new members. Also, the members who had served in the armed service were presented flags made by youth club members. That was very generous of the youth club!

The item was brought up that we had not honored the graduates this year so the next meeting on Sunday, August 4 at 2 p.m. will honor them.

Those who are celebrating birthdays in July were Jerome Orsag and Willie E. Kohutek and Della Mares, who was not at the meeting. Those who are celebrating wedding anniversaries are Ruth and Leroy Hanusch and Jerome and Molly Orsag. Hope you all celebrated the special day.

Door prize winners were Monroe Lucko, Ruth Janacek, and Edwin Marek.

87, Temple reports on July meeting Lodge

The July 9, 2002 meeting was called to order by President Dan Kacir. The Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence was held for departed members.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Bertha Capps and approved. Correspondence was read—a thank you note from the Temple Fire and Rescue Fire Safety House project thanking us for our donation.

The treasurer's report was given by Daryl En trop.

New Business Our past president and Sales Rep Ladis Navratil was left out of our awards ceremony at our last meeting—cops. We certainly didn't mean to leave him out. He is a big part of our lodge.

Youth Leader Pam Capps reported on youth activities and the upcoming District Two Youth Achievement Day. There were 19 members present.

Our next meeting will be August 13, 2002 at 7 p.m. at the lodge.

The lodge meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. then we enjoyed a feast of cold watermelon.

Memorial Honors World War II Heroes and Heroines

Colleyville Courier Reprinted with permission When the three war monuments were unveiled at The Village at Colleyville on Saturday, June 8, Lydia Tirk Alholm — a member of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth — led the Pledge of Allegiance. Her own family name was at the top of the tablet that listed all of the Colleyville residents at that time, who served their country during World War II. But the stone marker she uncovered herself had the smallest list of names engraved on it. It had the names of the boys who never came home. Her brother's name is there, Lt. Col. Anthony Tirk Jr. He had been squadron leader of his group of P47 Thunderbolts when he was shot down on March 11, 1944, over Italy.

"When he was stationed here in the states," Alholm recalled, "he would fly over the farm and sort' of tip his wings. We all knew it was him, and we would go out and wave at him. As time went on, he went overseas.

"When he was attacked, the boys who were in his squadron were behind him. Later on, we were told that his parachute was on fire, and that he did fall into water. His body was never found. His death was on March 11, 1944.

"My mother always though that he would return."

The daughter of a Czechoslovakian father and a Russian mother, Alholm was five years old when she moved to Smithfield, which eventually became Colleyville. Her parents bought 165 acres and set up a farm.

All four children and their mother worked the dairy and picked produce while her father kept his day job as a county commissioner in Fort Worth.

Alholm graduated from Grapevine High School in 1938 and North Texas State University in 1942.

Armed with a degree in Physical Education, she became a school teacher. But after teaching for a year, she was ready for a different challenge, so she enlisted in the Navy.

Her big brother, the fighter pilot, never saw her in uniform.

"I guess I was the type who wanted to go out and travel and do things," she said. "I was sent to Hunter College in New York. I stayed there for boot camp and then they sent me to Washington, D.C., where I was the personnel supervisor of 112 girls. " The girls worked in communications which was all secret," Alholm pointed out. "They worked code machines and there was no way that I would even ask questions about what they did, or what codes they were receiving. And they didn't dare tell anybody what they were doing. I was there three years."

She had been promoted to Chief Petty Officer and consequently had the "perks" of the rank. "I had day duty, weekends off, private room and maid service," Alholm said. "I could travel anywhere I wanted on weekends. We would go to the Washington, D.C. airport and go to Bermuda or up into Canada. I did a lot of traveling. And of course, I went to New York quite a bit."

Alholm met her husband, Roy, in Washington. He had already served in the military and was working for the War Department. Roy's family was Finnish, but he went to the polka dances held once a month at the Czech Embassy. He had his eye on the girl in uniform who was attracting so much attention. He waited a month before asking to take her home.

"So we dated six days a week (Monday was an 'off' day because I did my hair) for three years," Alholm said. "We'll be married 56 years on the 31st of August. So I tease him, and I say 'What was a Finlander doing at a Czech embassy anyway?' He just laughs and says he was 'looking."'

Alholm resigned from the Navy and married Roy at the Navy Chapel on August 31, 1946. They had two sons and she taught school for 30 years in Chicago, St. Louis, Ogden, Utah; and Fort Worth, before retiring in 1980.

Roy retired from LTV in Grand Prairie that same year. They traveled extensively for the next 14 years. They both speak Czech and have been to Czechoslovakia several times.

Her parents were interested in gymnastics. "They were in a gymnastic group called the Sokol in Fort Worth," Alholm said. "That means 'falcon' in Czech. Roy and I went to Prague — to the big stadium there — to take part in a gymnastics exhibition. There were thousands of us doing the same routine at the same time. We used to be really active in the senior group."

Alholm described their lives as having been centered around the SOKOL and polka dancing. Now life is a little more staid. Roy plays bridge in Southlake every Tuesday. They go to bingo at the Colleyville Community Center and watch Lawrence Welk on Channel 2 every Saturday night. "We used to think that if we didn't go out on Saturday night, we weren't living," she said.

Pamela J. Sturrock married Wally Wood of Houston, Texas on April 6, 2002 at Helping Hands Church in Houston.

Pamela is the daughter of Doris and Clarence Boriski of Dripping Springs. Wally is the son of Wallace R. Wood and Melba Wood of Houston. The couple will reside in Houston. Pamela is a dental assistant and Wally is a writer of many books.

180, Burleson rentals doing well; assistance needed Lodge

Whew! What a weekend. Our rental Saturday night, July 6, was a doozy. It was a 12-hour rental — a wedding ceremony, reception, dinner and dance. Over 700 people attended with 100 or more waiting outside for a chance to come in to join the celebration. Many were turned away because we were filled to capacity.

We want to thank Nanette and her daughters, Amber and Amanda from Lodge 54 in West for coming down to help in the snack and soda bar. They did a great job. We appreciate their much-needed help. Also a thank you goes to Carol and Bill Slavik for coming later in the evening to help. Wish we could have that kind of help at every rental.

District Three Director Johnnie Krizan is working on our dilemma here at Lodge 180. He enlisted the help of Nanette and her daughters to come and assist us at the big rental Saturday night. Hopefully, they will be able to help us on a regular basis.

Our rentals are a huge success—a goal our members have worked hard to achieve, but we lack the necessary manpower to continue to run and maintain the lodge and its property. We are booked up for most of the year so that tells you what we are facing.

Maybe there will be solutions. The Supreme Lodge has heard our concerns.

Lodge 196, Houston-West reports on June meeting Lodge 196, Houston-West (Cypress) met on June 23, 2002 at 2 p.m. President Marvin Schulz opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the roll call of officers. Not present were First Vice President Evelyn Mikeska and Second Vice President Carl Pflughaupt.

The minutes and treasurer's report were read and approved. There were no departed members.

A discussion was held concerning Mr. Hanus and the donations and contributions he had made in the beginning days of the new lodge building.

Cliff Netterville asked Mr. Hanus if he would accept a letter from the SPJST noting his donations for income tax deductions. Mr. Hanus said he would talk to his CPA, and he thought it "would be great."

Mr. Hanus spoke about life insurance and promoting the SPJST in the area. Lynn Johnsen talked about advertising and how important that is.

Discussion was held on the many ways to advertise that the lodge could afford. An investigative committee was formed to look into ways of advertising in the community, both insurance and the hall rental.

Lynn Johnsen gave an insurance report of how the lodge is doing. Districtwide, she noted we were behind.

A motion was passed to allow Ms. Pat Hunter to become a sales representative for Lodge 196.

Ms. Marie Stayton invited all members to the Lodge 88 for Districtt Five Youth Achievement Day. Ms. Stayton noted that there is room for one more boy to go to camp. If there is a boy who has not made seven meetings, but would like to go to camp, he may go for an $85 fee.

Cliff Netterville was voted in to be a parliamentarian to assist the President and Alma Schulz was voted in as Treasurer when Catherine Manchack resigned.

In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy We, the officers and membership of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of MARGARET LUCILLE STEFFEK, 82, of El Campo who died Tuesday, June 25, 2002.

She was born July 13, 1919 in Louise to the late Joseph and Anna Marie Veselka Chovanec. She was a homemaker and member of St. Philip's Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje.

Survivors are daughter, Judi Gann of Houston and Peggy Fox of El Campo; brother, Joe Chovanec of Point Comfort; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by husband, Victor A. Steffek; sister, Judith Chovanec; brother, Ray Chovanec; and parents.

Visitation was on Wednesday, June 26 at 10 a.m. at Triska Funeral Home chapel. A wake service was at 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 26. Services were on Thursday, June 27 at 10 a.m. at St. Philip's Catholic Church with the Reverend Thu Nguyen officiating.

Burial was at Holy Cross Memorial Park. Triska Funeral Home, El Campo, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Hospice Support, Inc., or St. Philip's Church Building Fund.

Expression of Sympathy The members of Lodge 156, Baytown, Texas extend their deepest sympathy to the family of CLEM J. KOVAR who passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at the age of 84 years.

Clem was born July 16, 1917 in Beasley, Texas to Will and Lydia Kovar. The Kovars moved two years later to Snook. Clem graduated from Caldwell High School in 1936 and attended Sam Houston State University at Huntsville until he joined the Navy during World War II. He was stationed in Atlanta, Georgia where he married his first wife, Mary McLendon. The couple moved to Baytown and had two children, Mary and Jerry.

Clem soon opened Kovars TV and A/C in 1948. During his retirement years, he met and married Odelle, his second wife of 27 years. The Kovars resided in the Newport area of Crosby since 1982. They were active members of First Christian Church and SPJST Lodge 156, Baytown.

He is survived by daughter, Mary E. Kovar of Rocklin, California; son, Dr. Jerry Kovar and wife, Linda of Palos Verdes, California; brothers, Bill

Kovar and wife, Billie, Leonard Kovar, and wife, Sue, and Harry Kovar; sisters, Doris Sadler and husband, Bobby, Lydia Castorena and husband, Ray, Rosalie Holland and husband, Harold; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Troy Maxey, Jeff Kovar, Matt Kovar, Jack Kovar, Dub Kovar, Danny Kovar, Ricky Sadler, and Mike Lawhon.

Visitation was on Thursday, June 6.

The funeral service was Friday, June 7 at 10 a.m. at Navarre Funeral Home in Baytown. Graveside services followed at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Baytown.

Services were held at Heights Baptist Church in Temple with Dr. Tom Henderson officiating.

Mr. Zvolanek was born in Temple.

He worked at Odell Geer Construction as a superintendent for 30 years. He was a member of Heights Baptist Church and SPJST Lodge 87 of Temple.

Survivors are his wife, Patricia Ann Zvolanek of Temple; six sons, Michael Zvolanek of Dallas; James Riley and Kenneth Forsythe, both of Temple, Terry Forsythe of Antioch, Illinois, Galen Forsythe of Los Angeles, and Patrick Forsythe of St. Charles, Illinois; three daughters, Cathy Whitis of Temple, Edna Wright of Garland, and Faye Wilson of Terrell; brother, Joe Zvolanek of Temple; and 23 grandchildren.

Burial was held at Seaton Cemetery.

Expression of Sympathy The officers and members of Lodge 25, Ennis, wish to express their sympathy to the family of WESLEY W. PATAK. Mr. Wesley "Basco" W. Patak, 71, died Saturday, June 29, 2002 at his home in Ennis.

He was born February 7, 1931, the son of Joe A. and Mary C. Nekuza Patak. He was reared in Ennis where he attended St. John High School. In 1947, he was employed by Leggett and Platt On July 27, 1955, he was married to Josephine Macalik. After their marriage, they lived in Ennis. In 1993,

he retired as supervisor of the Ennis plant of Leggett and Platt. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church, the KJT, SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis, and a 50-year member of the KJZT. He is survived by his wife, Josephine of Ennis; three sons and their wives, Danny and Eva Patak of Ennis, Johnnie and Suzi Patak of Amarillo, David and Gayle Patak of Ennis; daughter and husband, Margie and Rick Hrncir of Palmer; two brothers, Joe S. Patak and Edwin G. Patak, both of Ennis; sister, Evelyn Patak of Ennis; and six grandchildren, Tine, Katie, Ashley, Hailey, Hillary, and Wesley.

He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Ann Machelle Trojacek on August 10, 1979.

A Celebration of Life was held at 7:30 p.m., Monday, July 1 in the Keever Chapel. Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated, at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 2 in St. John Catholic Church with Father Ernie Villaroya as celebrant.

Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary.

Survivors include a daughter, Lorine , Stary of El Campo; sons, George Lehnert, Jr. of Louise and Eugene Lehnert of Houston; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Lehnert, Sr.; sisters, Mary Pesek and Agnes Pesek; brothers, Henry Studeny and Louis Studeny; and her parents.

A parish rosary was recited on July 9 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Hillje. Services were on July 9 at the church with the Reverend Clement Quainoo officiating.

Entombment was at Holy Cross Memorial Park under the direction of Triska Funeral Home.

District Three Campers heading to camp on Friday Dear District Three Campers, I am dreaming of Camp 2002 at Val Verde! This will be a "Dream Worth Keeping!"

Now that everyone has signed the SPJST Rules of Conduct form, you are aware of the "dos" as well as the "don'ts." Now, let's each do our part and abide by them. If you have any questions regarding the SPJST Rules of Conduct, please contact me, Bessie Petr, your District Three Youth Counselor or our State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny.

Camp Val Verde 2002 will be a memory worth keeping! I can see it now: The points your team earns when you hit the bull's eye in archery.

And I can see you in the craft but working on your projects — and when it's time to change activities, I see you pretending to be a part of the next group just so you can stay a, little longer. And, I can see you in "Dave's World" trying to earn extra points for your team.

And, of course I can see you swimming and playing Marco Polo and winning first place in the team water relays. I start to laugh when I think about the canoe races and how everyone wants to be first to ride the horses.

Then I see you on horseback — passing in front of the cabin and waving to me, calling, "Hey, Bessie! Look at me! I'm having fun at Camp Val Verde! I'm riding a horse — a sweet dream come true!"

It's exciting to picture you out on the challenge course, knowing that you may be a little scared but also knowing that you will achieve the goal of completing the course. One of my favorite things that I am anticipating is when each cabin comes up with a skit after dinner on Saturday night. That's when my talented District Three kids really shine! That'll definitely be one of my dreams worth keeping!

So many dreams can come true for you at Camp Val Verde. So start packing your bags and don't forget to bring these supplies: • Sheets/pillow/light blanket or sleeping bag.

• Clothes for four days (shorts, tee-shirts and jeans). Little ones, it's best to make sure your that names are on all of your personal items.

• Tennis shoes or other shoes without an "open-toe."

• Jeans or long pants or horseback riding.

• Two sets of swim suits — one for the swimming pool and another one for canoeing.

• Beach towel for pool and canoeing and showering.

• Sunscreen.

• Aloe vera lotion.

• Cap or hat.

• Flashlight.

• Personal items, including toothbrush, paste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc.

Towels and wash cloths.

• Skit ideas (Dream Worth Keeping).

• Lots of fun.

Sandals.

Food, including drinks or candy.

These items attract ants and rodents to your cabin. The District provides plenty of food, sodas, candies, chips and snacks.

The best way to get to Camp Val Verde is IH 35 South to Highway 84 in Waco headed towards McGregor.

Go approximately five miles to Val Verde Road, where there will be a green sign. Follow the paved road and the signs leading to the camp.

I look forward to greeting you at registration at Camp Val Verde on Friday July 19, 2002 from 10 a.m until 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., followed by your first scheduled activity at 1:30 pm.

We will have many late night activities planned to make you want your parents to come pick you up on Monday July 22, 2002. Departure will be after you have cleaned your cabin and had lunch. Parents don't be late! I'm sure the kids will talk to you all the way home about this being the best camp ever.

District Four Camp July 29-31 at the Wagon Wheel Dude Ranch Dear District Four Campers, Camp will be a return trip to the Wagon Wheel Dude Ranch on July 29-31. We had such a great time there last summer and are looking forward to an even better camping experience.

We will pay tribute to the great country that we live in at camp. We will honor America with a patriotic theme, which will be carried out with many activities. Be sure to bring your red/white/blue outfit for the big Patriotic Party that will be held.

Once again, we will divide into groups and try to earn "Patriotism Points." Teamwork will be stressed with various activities. In addition to the group challenges, we will enjoy horseback riding, paddleboats, horseshoes, washer pitching, crafts, volleyball, basketball, an old-fashioned wagon ride and cookout and plenty of swimming in the pool to cool us off.

Get lots of rest before you come to camp because we will be very busy while we are there.

All of you should have received a letter from me giving you more details about camp. If you did not receive one, please let me know. The main item to pack is enthusiasm! We are going to have another great time at the Wagon Wheel! I look forward to seeing all of you on July 29.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club member reports on first YAD This was my first year at Youth Achievement Day (YAD). I had fun and got a lot of money. I did a talent called "Five Little Monkeys" and I wasn't even scared. The judges laughed at me, but Mommy said that means I was cute. Later, I did another talent with our youth club and I was the devil playing the fiddle.

Lodge 40, El Camp-Hillje Youth Club reports on June meeting El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Youth Club held its regular monthly meeting on June 9, 2002 at the hall. The meeting began at 1:15 p.m.

President Cory Cerny called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance and the youth club motto were said by all of the youth attending.

Everyone stayed standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The month of June was sales representative appreciation month. The youth club presented a check for $25 to the SPJST scholarship fund to recognize all of the sales reps in our lodge who worked so hard to help the SPJST youth program.

The youth also made thank you cards to give to the sales reps in our lodge at our meeting. Mrs. Bacak, our youth leader, gave everyone packets that had been sent to her by District Six Youth Counselor Marcy Dorotik.

There was some very important information in those packets. Mrs. Bacak had gone over the information with the youth and their parents. Mrs. Bacak also handed out Youth Achievement Day (YAD) cards for those who are going to have something to enter in YAD. Those cards needed to be returned to Mrs. Bacak by the 20th of June.

The children worked on the poster that will be entered at YAD in Hallettsville, Texas on July 14, 2002.

Some even cut out pictures for the scrapbook. We also introduced Nicole Laitkep, age 6, a new member joining our club. We all want to welcome you into our youth club.

Upcoming events are camp at Camp Val Verde on July 12 through 15 and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on Sunday, July 28 at Seaton.

We Need Your Help On Saturday, July 27, we need members and parents to help set up for YAD. You will be notified later of the time for that Saturday. Also, the

youth will be making breakfast burritos for the barbecue cookoff on July 20. We will need help from the parents for this event also.

Old business included members going to Summer Fun on July 7 for the District Two pre-camp meeting.

Everyone had a fun time and kept cool that afternoon.

Lodge 47, Seaton member takes third in Elks sweetheart competition Dear Youth Club Members, I am proud to report that I received third place in the Elks state sweetheart competition with District Sweetheart.

To you who have no idea what Sweetheart is, it is where the Elks lodge picks a designated person to raise money for the Children Prosthesis Grant Program. As District Sweetheart, I raised more than $16,000 with the help of the Temple Elks lodge members.

Lodge 84, Deas Youth Club member does good at YA 0 Dear Vestnik Readers, Whew! We finally made it through District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD).

Even though we were disappointed that our scrapbook did not place, we were especially excited that our group talent won first place again this year, so we'll be performing at State YAD on August 10.

Along with the group talent, I also submitted several crafts. Here are my winnings: two Honorable Mentions -- one in photography and one in Hobby Kits; one third place award in Science and Education for "A Scav enger's" Collection;" and two second place awards -- one in Constructed Items of my "Cool Truck" and one in Pictorial Arts for my drawing titled "Ocean on the Hawaiian."

I hope everyone who participated in District Three YAD had a good time and that everyone enjoyed the various talents performed.

Mrs. Linney reported on ice cream making. Brett Adamcik reported on how much fun he had while serving the homemade ice cream at Homecoming Day which was held at Lodge 88. Brian Graska reported on the fun that was had by the LITs at LIT camp/workshop.

LODGE 186, CALDWELL Lodge meetings are the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Youth club meetings are the third Sunday of each month at 2:30 p.m. at the lodge hall unless otherwise announced.
