Social Security Administration breaks ground for new building on SPJST Home Office property
Building for the Future Last week's SPJST Supreme Lodge meeting coincided with preliminary work on the new Social Security Building to be constructed on SPJST property across the street from the Home Office. Viewing the site, from left, are District Sl y, Director Mike Ahlstrorn, Leal Alvisor Sidney Kacir, President Howzfd Leshike7, Secretary-n .easure7 anita Anglin, Vice President Gene McBride, District Five Director Larry Pfiughaupt, Chairman and District Seven Director Bob Bayer, District One Director Donnie Victorick, Vice Chairman and District Four Director Stanley Broz, District Three Director Johnnie Krizan and District Two Director Frank Kiinkovsky.
After several years of work and coordination, the Federal government, City of Temple and SPJST have worked out a deal to sign leases and award a contract for the construction of a new Social Security Administration building across from the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street. According to a report which originally appeared in the Temple Daily Telegram, the project is structured so that the city will build and maintain the building for 15 years, during which time the rent paid on the facility will cover the debts associated with its construction. The loan on the project will be for $1.5 million. The site for the new building is owned by the SPJST with the city leasing the land for $1 a year. At the end of the 15-year lease, possession and clear ownership of the building will go to the SPJST.
Future plans for the building are undetermined. Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir, who was instrumental in structuring the agreement, said the building will be an asset to downtown as well as to the Society. "The architecture of the new 11,622-square-foot state-of-the-art building will complement that of the SPJST Home Office. Likewise, access to the parking lot will be off second street, rather than Main Street, likewise existing pecan trees will be an integral part of what will be an attractive site," says Brother Kacir. Vanguard Contractors were busy at work on the site last week, doing preliminary dirt work for the foundation. Official groundbreaking ceremonies for the new building will be on August 15 at 3 p.m. and the public is invited. —SPJST-
SPJST Delivers on Commitment SPJST Home Office personnel and area SPJST lodges joined forces with Temple firefighters in hosting the Texas Barbecue Lunch at the
SPJST Home Office on June 20. Their efforts culminated with the presentation of a check for $10,075 towards the purchase of the
Temple Fire and Rescue Fire Safety House. Making the presenta-
tion, at center, is Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. Fire Chief Lonzo Wallace, Jr., who is left of Mr. Leshikar, accepts the check on behalf of the firefighters.
